I normally drive a Suzuki Celerio SZ4 auto. However I've just driven a base model VW Up! rental car for a month in South Africa. Here's what I thought of it... The 59HP engine in the Up! is pathetically weak. On long hills you're forced to drop down to 3rd to get too the top! Also it's not very spacious. Try putting a big bag of shopping behind the front seat! Then the shiny plastic radio surround reflects the sun into your eyes (v annoying!). You get way more road/tyre noise on the Up! The Up!'s transmission tunnel is huge! Finally, the pop-out rear windows, the mirror simply glued to the windscreen & bare metal in the cabin make the Up! feel very third world. Pound for pound, the Celerio is a far better car than the Up!
Peter Growcott and very cheap... The celerio second hand is ranged from R70000,00+ for the upper spec model .. While the i10 fluid ranges from well over R190000+ for models with the touchscreen and finally the up can range from R120000+ .. For me i take the celerio because it has the whole package "6-airbags, more space , 4-electric windows , Esp and Abs"
I like Matt. He's a fellow Yam Yam (Yow niver loos yower aksunt do yow Matt?). That said, I'd never buy a car that he recommends. Wifey & me have both owned our Celerios since 2016 & in that time they have proved themselves to be utterly reliable, practical & remarkably fuel efficient (a consistent 70 mpg come rain or shine). In that time I've also driven the Up! (what a pathetically weedy engine) & the I-20 (it drinks petrol like an alcoholic sinks booze). Matt's right...you don't get what you haven't paid for & we all know who paid for this glowing review of the Up!
While I agree that they look good, they could use a bit of originality. The new i30 is either a Focus or a Mazda 3, I can't decide which. Last generation was following those 2 cars' styling too.
First i wanted to thank the channel for helping me deciding which car to choose without having any regrets. Well after saying that , lets start. I am recent owner of a hyundai i10 1245cc I went for the active version including some extras i did buy mostly for the looks but some are for practical use aswell. The car insides are great, seats are nice and easy to clean. The driving is nice and steady/linear, the car wont easily lose track even on bad roads, that comes from a guy that lives around vilages in greece, and for those who have visited greece prolly know about our terrible roads. I am a new driver aswell, not long ago i got my license, did had the chance to drive a few cars but the i10 felt like it was easiest to drive for me. You sit quite high, got a nice field of view while the ceiling isn't even near my head, i am 1.86m tall. Usb for playing music from a usb stick, that doesn't sadly support USB 3 sticks and wont charge your phone. AUX so you can play music from your devices. Good sound system with decent bass from the speakers and quite loud if needed. Has no arm pillow for the front seats expect at the doors and in the middle of the back seats. Compared to a yaris it was smaller inside but you can stil fit easily 5 people in it but i recommend it to be for max 3 passengers for a comfy ride. Plenty of space for your keys/devices/cups/ heck it has more space for scrap than our opel vectra vauxhall which is one of the biggest cars. There is more road noise compared to other cars , overall noise is a bit more, mostly during speeding. I went max 80km per hour and the noise is more noticable at least compared to our opel. In term of looks, i would say white/polar and silver are your best choice, modern colors, more adult like and ofc they don't leave visible scratches compared to dark colors. I tint my back windows including my front/back lights and made it look even better, i own the polar version and because the active model didnt had the side door protection i went ahead and did buy them because it gives a even better look and ofc protects your doors from the sides like for example if someone else opens his doors on your car it will hit the plastic instead. Overall its a really nice looking small car, in term of looks i would say the i10 and kia picanto were a hard choice to choose between them, the i10 did win for me because the back was looking better. Easy controls/menu to navigate around. Responsive driving, should be expect from a new car at this age. Didn't had trouble passing other cars when i had to. If you would like a small economic car that has the entire package i would say this is one of the best choice to go, i compared it with the toyota yaris/kia picanto/opel corsa and the i10 felt like it was meant for me, had better materials inside compared to the kia, better looks than the yaris, more realiable engine than the opel. That's how i ended up buying it.
i drove the hyundai 3500km trough morokko for 3 weeks, it handled dirt, mountains and motorways with ease if you punch it, best car for low price imo. :)
It seems you already made up your mind before the test because you said that you were surprised by the performance of the Celerio, but you "still" think it is worth getting the Hyundai, and your preference was the Up. From this test I think the Celerio was the far better car, it had more space, it was more economical. Also I preferred the interior because it was more formal and did not appear over designed, which gives a tacky appearance.
Mat Watson is fantastic at his job! I love his way of reviewing cars! You get all the information that matters while also being very entertained! Would be a great additional to a certain motoring show!
The celerio has got a proper radio and CD player. That's what I want. As someone nearly 60 I think touch screens are dangerous and I can't use them. some of us don't want all this tech. We want simple
I have an VW UP! Move up with the 60hp engine. (Non turbo) I've also recently had an i10 as hire car. Although the hire car was higher spec than my UP!, I found road noise was awful, it wasn't a nice drive either. My UP! is more comfortable, just as nippy around the town, much less road noise and also much more involving and fun to drive. It always leaves me with a smile on my face. And to top it off it's very eco. I get 45mpg around the city. Yes, it isn't as quick acceleration on the motorway as the others or even this one tested here, but that's all. It doesn't struggle except by hill on the motorway but you get a run up and your ok. It is more than nippy enough around town. I simply love it!
I currently have the 75hp turbo as my first car. It's even better although u might lose a few mpg. My car can do 75mph on the motorway easily and can do 200 mile trips and u'll still feel comfy at the end. Cheap doesn't mean bad with vw
I don't understand why they think hyundai's engine is weak. The NA 1.25 engine has 87 hp with 120.6 nm torque; how much more you would want in an i10??
The Up looks like a dishwasher. I had an i10 as a courtesy car for a week and was actually pleasantly surprised, aside from the shit clutch and brake pedal situation(either all or nothing) everything else was surprisingly nice, actually had a great sound system
I went through Car Wow for my same specced i10 so got a tidy sum off the car. The clincher for me over the UP! is the sat nav, who can be faffed with a mobile phone in a cradle? The UP! has the badge but the smart buyer will look elsewhere.
Actually, I would prefer my mobile phone's navigation, screen quality and speed over almost any slow car infotainment system. I've experienced quite a few (included the i10's) and only expensive cars (above Golf VII/A3/Megane/308) get decent processor speeds. Even then you're better of firing up AndroidAuto/Carplay instead of proprietary nav. Moreover, you don't pay a million pounds for an already outdated map update without accurate traffic info like Waze or Google Maps. You can spent the money you saved on the sat nav on superior interior quality, engines and handling.
It's a faff if you have to press things on your mobile as well as putting it and taking it out of the cradle everytime you use the car. I think if this method was successful you'd see it in other cars but you don't
The VW gives you the smallest car at the highest price with an overengineered engine, which will cost you a fortune if the turbo breaks down. The Suzuki offers the most space at the lowest cost but it looks a little bit lame and the interior looks really cheap. The Hyundai offers a good design, good space and an engine without a turbocharger. So it is not the cheapest but it is cheap, has no expensive parts that tend to break and it has 5 years of warranty without any limitation. For me, that's the winner. What Mat Watson forgets is that these cars are not meant to be a sports car. Usually, they are just used in cities, not on motorways. I got an i10 last year for my way to work. It replaced my BMW 318i touring, which I still have but I didn't want it to go 200km every day. The only thing I missing is the space if I have to transport big stuff. But here I am talking about really big stuff. The Hyundai can also take 2m boards as long as the width is not too big or some Ikea stuff. I am getting close to 50000 km now and I'm still happy with my car.
I don't understand how he made the Volkswagen the winner because he said it was only doing 42 miles per gallon and the back windows don't open and it had the smallest boot and it was the most expensive .. and then at the end of the test he says the Volkswagen up was the winner ??? Sounds all a bit biased to me especially when Suzuki and Hyundai always finish much higher up car reliability tables than Volkswagen.
I have a hyundai i10 automatic and its a beast, its so comfy and it doesn't feel slow at all. Only issue is that i cant get over 29 mpg and i dont think i drive uneconomically
Futurebreeze I didn’t know it at the time but the sort of driving I do around London consists of constantly slowing down and accelerating which makes it really bad. On the motorway I get around 45 even when revving it a lot
Nandan Belagodu ohh....Please....1 dollar equals to 65 rupees.....You are saying that Renault kwid comes under 3400 dollars.....Means under 3 lakhs......Are you maid....Top end version cost a little less than 5lakhs....Means...8-9000 dollars...
The thing here is, I am looking for the most fuel economic car that I can find for city driving. It doesn't have to be fancy, it doesn't have to be fast, it doesn't have to have loads of space. All it has to do is get me to work and back as economically as possible. I have my eye right now on the Hyundai I10 unless somebody can suggest something else better??? I am open to suggestions.
Volkswagen Up parts/maintenance will be more expensive in the long run ( pop out rear window is a minus ), Celerio is so basic as your average appliance, so best for average buyer with average wage that won't bore you to bits as much is Hyundai i10.
I can't understand "power for overtaking on the motorway" ? the i10 for instance will cruise at 80 all day long at about 50mpg, you do not overtake on a motorway, but you can go faster than other cars if you wish. However the 1248 motor will overtake easily coming off islands on dual carriageways, often needing care because 90 is no problem either. Funny thing, very surprised by 1litre i10, 3 cylinder rental in Spain, went up the big hills at 60+ much better than the bigger engine. Still only 50mpg though.
I drive the Hyundai i10 automatic and the gearbox is a gem with a torque converter and smooth as silk. The UP has a jerky automated manual and that does it for me wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.
I think you are wrong about the steering feel of the celerio and i10. Hyundais usually have the lighest steering wheels which render no! feedback. Whereas the celerio is still weighted somewhat. The response of the celerio might not be good enough but it atleast has feedback
Had the i10 for a year - no problems - and can confirm it's a very nice solid quality feeling car. It also has the advantage of having a smooth quiet 4-cylinder 1.2L engine - vs the rough and rattle of the 1L 3-cylinder Up! engine.
You should do a video of the "best" first (used) cars for broke college students. Less than 1500€. By best I mean that will last more than a few months
I have the car for you. Toyota Yaris 2003 1.3. They go for 1k. This is my current car and I love it. It’s not slow and is very reliable. It’s also bigger inside than you think. Get a T3 spec. I average 42 mpg. 37 in London. If you drive at 50mph you’ll get high fifties. It will also do comfortable cruising at 70 80 mph. 0,60 mph is 11 secs which is decent. If you don’t care about that sort of thing then go for the 1.0 litre.
I'm a prospective small car buyer and this review was pretty useless. What does "it holds up on the motor-way" even mean and why do you compare a turbo-charged car with normal cars? If I wanted horsepower, I'd buy a bigger car. Also, storage space isn't as important in small cars. Again, if I needed storage space, I'd simply buy a bigger car.
If someone has to buy a small car, wouldn’t they want the best small car they could get? I think cargo space and keeping up with the pace of traffic are important in any car you buy… especially if you do more than just urban driving. And not everyone has the option to just buy a bigger car.
You actually talk quite opposite to what you claimed! Which is quite surprising bcuz a small car-buyer must definitely care about storage space! Cuz that's what's a hatchback is about in the first place! A tiny car to save fuel that can be converted into a huge cargo when needed!
@@kevinrtres Not for me, I have one and I don't transport anyone in the back very often but for a vw it could do with electric rear windows. Especially on my top of the range model!

We have a “Grand i10” here in Sri Lanka and I’ve been in one. It’s pretty impressive for the money you pay for it. Hyundai has certainly come a long way. Certainly better than Toyota and other Japanese small cars like the Yaris.
replying after 3 years🙂 this i10 better than yaris seriously bro grand i10 is just a entry level hatchback(here in india) Yaris has sedan and hatch and both are better than this
problems is pricing, the Up is by FAR the most expensive one, both used and new. I think the I10 has the advantage when it comes to pricing esp if its 2-3 years old and below 50k kilometers driven. Its just not posible to get an up with the same type of extras for as little as the I10. At least not in this country. The suzuki, is horrible i am tall and the only one i couldnt fith into was the Suzuki Celerio.
The Hyundai i10 should have won this comparison by far. It has more features than the other two, it looks better than the other two, and it's the most usable of the three.
The UP! is one of the few cars VW makes that I actually respect with it's non-corporate styling and good packaging and interesting interior which is contrary to all other vw products besides the Arteon. However I'd still get the Twingo.
If you want an automatic try comparing the smooth conventional auto box on the i10 to the jerky automated manual on the UP. You will definitely want the Hyundai then.
I expected the Celerio to get trounced by the others but its not bad at all.... and at 4k less than the others, a serious consideration

The celerio was rated the most reliable small car by the 2019 What Car Reliability Survey.
The celerio is very light on fuel for the street bashes
The Hyundai i10 is more practical than the others
Lol cuz u own one
Most of the nitpicking was unfair considering the cars are completely different specs
Owning a grand i10...a great budget car packing useful features. Enjoyed your review thoroughly. tnx
The Volkswagen reminds me of Jeremy driving it in Chernobyl
This is brilliant but I like this
Small Golf as Polo
Hyundai makes great cars and they starting to look good too
While I agree that they look good, they could use a bit of originality. The new i30 is either a Focus or a Mazda 3, I can't decide which.
Last generation was following those 2 cars' styling too.
First i wanted to thank the channel for helping me deciding which car to choose without having any regrets.
Well after saying that , lets start.
I am recent owner of a hyundai i10 1245cc
I went for the active version including some extras i did buy mostly for the looks but some are for practical use aswell.
Great review. Thanks for your input!
Why couldnt they fit the up with proper windows at the back ?
I think Id go for the i10..
i10 all the way. They are great cars. We have one and love it. It’s built like a tank, cheap to run and looks good.
i drove the hyundai 3500km trough morokko for 3 weeks, it handled dirt, mountains and motorways with ease if you punch it, best car for low price imo. :)
SUZUKI design is simple, but they have always safety, strong , smart spec and good cost perforemance.
Every word is true!!!
Mat Watson is fantastic at his job! I love his way of reviewing cars! You get all the information that matters while also being very entertained! Would be a great additional to a certain motoring show!
I think VW's idea with the maps + more app is really great, saves money and works just fine
VWs never save you money.
There is no cheap and cheerful, there is expensive and cheerful or cheap and dreary.
Jeremy Clarkson
That's not true. The Suzuki Swift proves that cheap & hysterically amusing does exist.
@@iatsd especially in 1.6 form.
Didn't mentioned the celerios legendary k series engine which will return you mileage that no other can
Why didn't they include the 2018 Kia Picanto GT Line?
The celerio has got a proper radio and CD player. That's what I want. As someone nearly 60 I think touch screens are dangerous and I can't use them. some of us don't want all this tech. We want simple
Had a 2013 up! And the rattling transmission coupled with tiny fuel tank really annoyed after awhile, was overly cost cut really.
matt, u got stop kissing the european car's a*s all the time in every video. hyundai wins the test easily,
Good review! I think that you showcased all 3 cars extremely well and gave any buyer a good idea what they will be up against! No pun intended.
The NA 1.25 engine has 87 hp with 120.6 nm torque; how much more you would want in an i10??
really like the stylish, premium, and feature packed i10 but I think the Picanto has even better styling.
The Up looks like a dishwasher. I had an i10 as a courtesy car for a week and was actually pleasantly surprised, aside from the shit clutch and brake pedal situation(either all or nothing) everything else was surprisingly nice, actually had a great sound system
Beeing 100% practical and 0 emotion... the Celerio is quite incredible, huge space, big boot, and is by far the cheapest
What about build quality??????
I went through Car Wow for my same specced i10 so got a tidy sum off the car. The clincher for me over the UP! is the sat nav, who can be faffed with a mobile phone in a cradle? The UP! has the badge but the smart buyer will look elsewhere.
+penguinred651 how did you hear about carwow?
Through Matts UA-cam Videos, I bought the i10 from seeing his review in 2014, so many thanks.
Not experienced any issue with i10s sat nav or speeds, perfectly acceptable.
I personally like the Hyundai 😊
I don't understand how he made the Volkswagen the winner because he said it was only doing 42 miles per gallon and the back windows don't open and it had the smallest boot and it was the most expensive .. and then at the end of the test he says the Volkswagen up was the winner ???
Sounds all a bit biased to me especially when Suzuki and Hyundai always finish much higher up car reliability tables than Volkswagen.
I think you got the 1,2,3 right. The VW up looks the best too👍
Thanks for this video🙂
This was a very good video, though I would have liked the Vauxhall VIVA (Opel Karl) to have been included as well.
I live in India and I have a renault kwid that starts with 3000 dollars and has an information system and has 70 bhp the top end model is 3400 dollars
How much did it cost you to watch this video
The thing here is, I am looking for the most fuel economic car that I can find for city driving. It doesn't have to be fancy, it doesn't have to be fast, it doesn't have to have loads of space. All it has to do is get me to work and back as economically as possible. I have my eye right now on the Hyundai I10 unless somebody can suggest something else better??? I am open to suggestions.
Renault twizy would be great but it doesn't have any doors so maybe the celerio or dacia sandero would be good.
Volkswagen Up parts/maintenance will be more expensive in the long run ( pop out rear window is a minus ), Celerio is so basic as your average appliance, so best for average buyer with average wage that won't bore you to bits as much is Hyundai i10.
What if you could not get the 1.0 litre turbo VW up. Budget for example. Would the i10 have won in this case?
I've got an non turbo UP. It's perfectly fine. I love it
I go with Hyundai
I can't understand "power for overtaking on the motorway" ? the i10 for instance will cruise at 80 all day long at about 50mpg, you do not overtake on a motorway, but you can go faster than other cars if you wish.
However the 1248 motor will overtake easily coming off islands on dual carriageways, often needing care because 90 is no problem either.
Funny thing, very surprised by 1litre i10, 3 cylinder rental in Spain, went up the big hills at 60+ much better than the bigger engine. Still only 50mpg though.
wheres the picanto??
I drive the Hyundai i10 automatic and the gearbox is a gem with a torque converter and smooth as silk. The UP has a jerky automated manual and that does it for me wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.
I also have an auto i10! It's brilliant, the transmission is really smooth for a small auto :)
I bought a 4yr old top range VW up 13k on clock for £4500 for my wife - best car I’ve ever owned. By far.
By far, so far. Report back at 60 k after your engine repair.
up! is a fantastic car. I own one!
Me too. I agree!
Had mine 8 months. Love it!
9:52 is an accurate representation of me everytime I'm overtaking! However I've got the 1L only. I love my little i10 🥰 (first car)
@Aryan Ghouri
Because this is not sponsored by suzuki like most press reviews in india
I10!
No Mat, don't agree at all!! Why do you have a turbo charged Vw Up there!!! Compare the non-turbo Up against the other 2
I'd probably go for the Suzuki. Less melty styling and more boot space. Hope there's a 3 door option.
Please next compare FIAT Tipo vs it's rivals
I would go for the Volkswagen Up! for its charming looks and customizability.
Ford mondeo vs Toyota Yaris hybrid vs Merc B class
Please?
Ideal cars for a family
It's amazing that it all came down to the driving dynamics, sort of an interesting twist.
U should compare the closely priced variants of the cars... To get the better result
It also has the advantage of having a smooth quiet 4-cylinder 1.2L engine - vs the rough and rattle of the 1L 3-cylinder Up! engine.
Since when is it always hot and sunny in the UK during December? o.O
thernztrom or any time of the year
You should do a video of the "best" first (used) cars for broke college students. Less than 1500€.
By best I mean that will last more than a few months
That is nowhere in the same 'class' as these cars....
The UK works in £. When I convert € to £, €1500 equals £1318.93
Wizzlo Yeah, my comment is a bit unrelated to the video
Cars in UK are cheaper than where I live, so let's say less than 1200£, or the minimum wage a young guy gets by working all summer. 2-3 months
The 2021 next gen Celerio offered in India is amazing, it has power windows, auto mirrors, best fuel economy, and a larger boot than before.
Opel Karl, Fiat Panda, Ford ka+ now. Merci for this review 😊
Um where are the up’s centre air conditioning vents?
Behind the smartphone holder, which isn't very good imo.
8:25 Who will go to play golf in a celerio !!!!
Yeah I had a good chuckle at that part of the video.
i really like these head2head test!!
A tiny car to save fuel that can be converted into a huge cargo when needed!
give it a rest
I always look forward to watching the car wow videos.
i10 every time

*Human Body Is Made Up Of 70% Water.*
😂
_Np, Everyone Make Mistakes!_
Epiclifery Active no, the earth is for aprox. 70% made up of water. An average male adult body 60%, female only 55%. Know your facts.
Nice to see you again...
Don't hate me for it, but I like the up! 's interior the most.
It looks very modern.
But I still don't get who thought of that windows.
Yes, that's a dealbreaker for most people.
@@kevinrtres Not for me, I have one and I don't transport anyone in the back very often but for a vw it could do with electric rear windows. Especially on my top of the range model!
I own a Grand i10 and its absolutely amazing. It perfect from all ways.
Apart from being a perfect car, what are your problems or rather minor issues to consider valuable for someone who wants to buy one. I would appreciate your honest review
He said it won the test, because it holds his own on the motorway.. but it's a city car? :D
@Futurebreeze Well someone had a bad day today, didn't you.
So which one should you buy, a second hand V70r and 3 years worth of petrol and maintence costs sell it in 5 years when's it''s officially a classic and double your money comfortably
Everyone reviwing expensive cars I can't ever afford. I welcome some reviews of cars in my income range :)))))
Also.. why would the VW win it with that disastruous fuel consumption? Which may be fake anyway.
Gadjo X Can you please fucking respect his opinion?
But this is the most affordable cars.
We have a “Grand i10” here in Sri Lanka and I’ve been in one. It’s pretty impressive for the money you pay for it. Hyundai has certainly come a long way. Certainly better than Toyota and other Japanese small cars like the Yaris.
replying after 3 years🙂
this i10 better than yaris
seriously
bro grand i10 is just a entry level hatchback(here in india)
Yaris has sedan and hatch
and both are better than this
problems is pricing, the Up is by FAR the most expensive one, both used and new.
Y did u have to get the beats addition, the base model is what most first time buyers will buy
Kia rio vs hyundai i20 vs vw polo please
The Hyundai i10 should have won this comparison by far. It has more features than the other two, it looks better than the other two, and it's the most usable of the three.
The UP! is one of the few cars VW makes that I actually respect with it's non-corporate styling and good packaging and interesting interior which is contrary to all other vw products besides the Arteon. However I'd still get the Twingo.
Twingo? Really? A rear engined, rear wheeled drive, 3 cylinder, with 900ccs? How many more disadvantages do you need?
If you want an automatic try comparing the smooth conventional auto box on the i10 to the jerky automated manual on the UP. You will definitely want the Hyundai then.
This world would be a better place if everyone had a small car
The Suzuki Celery, the Hyundai i-ioh and the Volkswagen Up exclamation mark. - Jeremy Clarkson
The Celerio looks a bit weak but I got into an accident in it and it performs med really well. I was impressed.
