Religion is like a codified culture. Cultures are usually weakly defined and people can adapt to new cultures quite well but religions get very specific about rules to fit in and the punishment for adapting out of one. Religious books make clear who people should not marry, how people from other religions should be treated differently and even punishments like mentioned in the video of death for marrying outside her religion(4:40 to 4:45). Religion can be one of the most rigid walls between people. Islam is one of the bigger culprits.
In my opinion, culture and religious are intertwined together since the dawn of humanity. One can not exist without the other. What really matter is the way we are raised in treating other people and how open minded we can be in accepting them into our lives. For me, usually their behavior determine whether or not, I would allow them to be part of my life.
