Looks like you had a good day. Good to see lots of people watching the trains. And interesting that they took the passengers into that siding. Well done Alan.
What a day! I did toy with driving down to Appleby for the day but settled instead on Carlisle where the Freighter was once again pulling off some very unusual passenger moves. Looking at the crowds at Appleby, I think I made the correct choice - I filmed in several different locations - and had each one to myself. Cheers Alan.
Wait so... why did the train go into the side, come immediately out and onto the station's other platform, go straight back into the side, sat there for a while, and then came back into the station, and then back out but moving back onto the side of the tracks that it was originally on? Seems like so much wasted time and effort?
It would be a good idea to watch the video. Then you can see it went in with passengers (that's what t hey were there for) and out so they could get off and take photos. Then you could have seen local trains needing access to the platforms, so it had to return to the siding. Simple.
10:00 66068 has a familiar rattle to it. Quite possibly down here parked ticking over for a few hours some nights while loading goods wagons on the main rails.
@@CrossfellRailwayVideos Do you know what that 'siding' was built for ? Did it used to be a proper branch line to somewhere ? I looked at Google maps expecting to find a trace of where it used to go but found nothing. It ought to have been a link to mines or significant industry but there's nothing obvious on Google maps.
Proper maps have it marked - the OS 1" series. It's the spur joining the Settle and Carlisle line to the Eden Valley Line which ran very close just there. The EVR stayed open as far as Warcop for the Army Camp for years and now most of that is being used by the Eden Valley Railway - a private volunteer-run outfit.
Control haven't a clue, they say can you do this... the actual logistics are down to the poor bugger in the box, in this case me. There's more to do than watching too.
Because the passengers had hired the train to traverse as many sidings and loops as possible. Just for fun. The second time was to get out of the way of the numerous trains running through the station - rather necessary, you'll agree?
Why didn't the passengers get off the train before it went into the siding? Then it could have gone into the siding and waited there till it was clear to leave rather than go back in. Seems like an unnecessary manoeuvre to come back out, unload and go back in
But I was there and shot the videos and have no idea of type and build! Why should I? It's not my interest, all the background knowledge - I'm there to see them DO things.
No, the Settle and Carlisle line is part of the national network. It was proposed for closure some years ago but a 5-year campaign brought a reprieve. Now it's promoted as the S&C to generate more passengers, as it is the most scenic line in England.
I now realise that there are too many comments to read all through the replies - so, the special was full of spotters who came to ride all the sidings and loops and goods line that they could. So, into the old Eden Valley spur, used nowadays as a siding, Then out so they can get off and take photos of their train. Then back in, empty, to get out of the way of ordinary traffic. All this I worked out from seeing it, incidentally, as you have. No one explained it to me, either!
its amazing iff this was pulling the drax wagons no one would look twice, put some tatty coaches on and charge a bloody fortune can you beleive peoples mentality
It amazes me how stupid people are when it comes to locomotives, I operate one of these things and they do not stop on a dime unless they are already going slow
Great filming. Enjoyed the shunts into the sidings. Glad the footbridge held up. Thanks for posting.
Glad you enjoyed it - I did, too. Fascinating!
Looks like you had a good day. Good to see lots of people watching the trains. And interesting that they took the passengers into that siding. Well done Alan.
Yes it was a good day! Well, three hours, anyway!
There would not have been any passengers on board when it recessed, the people seen in the last coach would be staff.
Excellent video Alan. Superb day filming capturing all the coverage at Appleby . What a fantastic day. Very busy on the station. Kind regards C&A
Many thanks! It was not boring :)
Lots of interest in the mix , thanks enjoyed 👍 especially the 66s winding up at the end.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent 👌
Thank you! Cheers!
Great filming. Enjoyed the shunts into the sidings
Many thanks! I did, too - that was the main reason for going there!
Wouldn’t mind working that box. Good variety!
You're in! Report next Monday at 02.00 hrs!!!
Good video. Couldn't believe how busy those tracks are
They are! Many thanks!

Thanks Tim. Despite the crowds I was well satisfied - it's good to see the place busy!
Great and high quality video, thanks for the upload
Glad you enjoyed it!
Well done there Alan for getting all that, plenty people there. Cheers
It was certainly not lonesome!
Fantastic, very nice catches!!!👍👌👏
Thank you very much!
love how there was like no one there for the 66s on railtour till the hst showed up XD, great filming
Thank you very much! But what's XD mean?
@@CrossfellRailwayVideos XD, is just another way to do a face in text, so more or less its kinda like a laughing one
Right, thanks!
Great stuff Alan! Plenty trains, but plenty people too!
Yes indeed! A 13-coach trainload. No social distancing there. All on the platform was quite an awesome sight!
My goodness, back about 30 years ago there was like four trains a day along the S & C
We do a little better these days - a passenger about every 2 hours and about 3 definite freight movements most days.
Very cool video and excellent camera work 😀👍👍
Thank you very much Martin!
Great video! And very interesting!
Thank you very much!
Spectacular and infinitely interesting.
Many thanks! That was the idea.
I can’t help but think of the slippery verbal knot twisting character Sir Humphrey Appleby from Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister.
:)
Like 9 Greeting to England my friend, AWESOME, have a nice day
Thank you! You too!
So that HST 125 was a non-standard-timetable service?
Don't know. It was running for nearly 6 moths on a regular itinerary.
A great days filming on the S&C at Appleby Alan, nice one .
Many thanks Stephen. I thought that Appleby might be a good place to be around . . .

You got that right!
Fantastic ,and the people that turned up was amazing
Yes, amazing turn out!
Great video.
Thanks Stewart!
why'd it go into the siding twice? and not just stay there????
Read description and answers to same question asked before.
It would also help if you watched the film. It clearly shows the train entering the siding with passengers, and then returning for them to get off.
Is this part of the Flying Scotsman route? I remember darkly to have driven by Appleby in Microsoft Train Simulator back in the 2000's.
No, the Flying Scotsman train never came this way. The Flying Scotsman locomotive has been this way several times . . .
Can you explain why the Freighter went into the old spur?
I have - in the description AND in answer to a previous request.
@@CrossfellRailwayVideos What are sorties
Where did the railtour go when it turned off the main line.?
Read description?
That must have been an unusual move into the sidings with passengers on board.
Yes, probably the first for a great many years - when the Eden Valley Line was running trains!
I'm jealous!
Never mind!

There's something about a green 47 that looks so right but so wrong at the same time.
I know what you mean . . .
Railtour galore lol 😆
Definitely!
That line speed should be halved on that junction it looks like the the freight bogies are going to jump off!
Maybe . . . .
Nice to see a lot of messing about with trains and semaphore signalling. Kept the Bobby busy for once.
Yes, he probably put in for extra money!
Extra money! I wish. Just extra hassle, planning out the moves to leave lines free for the passing stock had me scratching my head.
Anyway you did a great job and it all went like clockwork
Does control know what they are doing ?
Control is in charge! AND a signalman watching.

Ask Rail Services. Their idea!
