For all their back-and-forth, they clearly love and respect each other, and more power to them and their relationship that they can let the disagreement be heated at times but still move on and be constructive. I am sure of one thing - they'll keep making great videos and podcasts, and I'll be keeping my Bronco Everglades order and checking with the dealer... =-D

One of the better podcasts from TFL! Just a note on plug in hybrids. I am definitely interested, as you can use electric for 80% of the time commuting, short trips and to extend rage, but you don't have to have a second vehicle to give you unlimited range, particularly in rural areas or off road. If you look at the net emissions, the "bad" times for emissions are multiple short trips and cold start. It just doesn't fit neatly into the narrative of climate change and the end to fossil fuels (which car electrification is a small part of that complete transition).

Love the father son arguing....but Tommy was right on both his points! Hybrids are the best of both worlds since you can get great gas mileage and not have to charge or worry about range. Electrics are too expensive and have no range so they are interesting because they are new but not practical for anything other than tooling around town to show off.

A key issue with the fording depth is hydrostatic pressure on seals and gaskets on various components. It may not seem like much but those components are designed to hold oil IN components, not keep water out - sure they do that for rain and puddles - but submerging them in 30" of water is a whole other story.
Regarding gas prices and "rich folks" - I drive a vehicle that isn't the most fuel efficient (and diesel so... yay!) and usually I don't care about gas prices, but the current levels are painful - so much so that the budget I had set aside for things like upgraded steering gears, regearing and offroad trailer improvements are getting reallocated into fuel.
FYI Roman, we've had crabwalk in our H1's for... 30 years. It's not pushing new technology in any way.

You'll fry the alternator before you fry any PCM'S or other electronics when water fording. The alternator is generally the limiting factor when water fording. I wonder if the 2.3L has the alternator located up higher than on the 2.7L and that's why you can only get it in a 2.3L. I understand the 100LB weight difference but I bet it's either the alternator location or a profit margin thing.

Snorkels are originally desert air intakes designed for dusty Australian excursions. What they are intended to do is take in cleaner air up high and not from the inner front fender where tons of dust is thrown up in those conditions. They weren't originally intended for water.

I think Tommy might be spot on with the equation of perceived offroad capability vs. perceived range limitations. I also think that the hummer EV and the Rivian R1T are sold out is because their production capacity is nowhere near what a normal vehicle would have been at pre-covid at maybe 100k+ vehicles per year. For a manufacturer that's probably the sweet spot though to be able to stay sold out and sell every single one. Inventory costs money.

Telsa doesn't make money buy selling cars they make money from a lot of people don't know carbon credit. If you want to keep operating and avoiding government fines you need to accumulate a certain amount of carbon credit (aka being green). Companies that make extra carbon credits can sell theirs to other companies that have a hard time making it. Telsa has the most carbon credit and that is how they make money and it also explains why car companies and different companies are looking into alternative energy.

You really need to watch some AUS guys going off-road.
Over there it's practically standard to have a snorkel for water fording.
It's easier to extend breathing tubes (front, rear axle + trans case) then mounting a water tight snorkel.
But I agree, having a snorkel from factory without extended breathers is dumb.
No, electronics on modern 4x4s doesn't go boom when water fording.

I agree with Roman here on the gas comment. I ordered and accepted delivery of a TRX and although it’s expensive and I make good money, I absolutely care about the amount of money I spend on gas. I borrowed money to be able to afford this truck and although I can afford the gas to keep it going as my daily driver with a 50-mile round trip commute, it’s certainly not something I just bat off. I choose not to concentrate on the amount of gas I use and choose to concentrate on how happy I am with my new truck. I believe there is definitely an automotive cliche about if you can afford it, you don’t care about gas. We are not at that level of cost in most cases. At the end of the day you can get a TRX cheaper than a heavy duty nicely equipped diesel truck.

    • @billredding2000
      @billredding2000 2 роки тому +1

...you drive more than I do now (being retired) and, my truck (Jeep Gladiator Rubicon, V6 gas) gets better MPG than a TRX does (and slightly better MPG than the Chevy Colorado ZR2 I was GOING to get), but if I had to drive 50miles/day commuting like you I'd likely consider getting a different (and more gas-friendly) vehicle. For now though, I'm keeping it and I certainly DO expect gas prices to drop -- eventually. Have lived through at least one "gas crisis" before (1973/OPEC-induced) so I'm in NO hurry to get rid of the Jeep.

Really love your TFL channels and content but sadly this podcast fell short of the standard that attracts many fans and automotive enthusiasts like myself. It is not my intention to be disrespectful, but I think the time has come for Roman to reconsider his involvement and participation in much of the TFL programming- I am not convinced he adds value and more significantly realizes how his moods and posturing really creates a rather negative ,unproductive and sometimes antagonistic overbearing persona, which just throws off the programme. I really respect what he has done with TFL and the drive to grow the brand and concept to what it is today. But in life we all need to know when it’s time to graciously reset and or bow out . Food for thought. Continue the good work TFL team and I am locked on!

Now I know you guys have acknowledged this, as have the fans, but this episode had a very odd, unproductive, and ultimately unprofessional amount of arguing.
