      I was just thinking the same thing! Of the few Schrades I still have from 5-10 years ago this is one of them, witt the old style sheath mentioned. It's inspired me to dig them out and touch up the edges for old time's sake.

  • @michaelhernandez410
    @michaelhernandez410 Рік тому +3

    Looks like I'll keep my SCHF9. I agree that the old sheath is better. If someone isn't old enough to have had the chance to buy a 9 when they first came out, I believe aftermarket sheaths are available. The new knife itself looks good, and I think 1/4" of AUS8 should be more than stout enough. BTW, if you have the patience, it can be made shaving sharp. Except for the sheath, it looks like an excellent upgrade. Kudos to Schrade.

    I bought an SCHF 9 in 1095 back in the day and it's a good 1 tool option, since it is very versatile, plus it's Gorilla tough.
    I am glad they brought it back with the saber grind like the original.

    Another great budget option from Schrade! I definitely have a new found respect for this company. Give it a decent leather sheath, and I would do it all day!

    AUS-8 is actually pretty tough stuff. I'm sure everybody has seen Joe-X test out Survival Lilly's knives made out of the same steel. Not endorsing her knives because I think they're a bit overpriced for what they are. But with a good heat treat AUS-8 will get the job done. Just doesn't hold an edge very long. Makes it easy to sharpen though.

    I have the old 9, plus the 42, 42d, and the 55, all 1095 and Taiwan-made. I like the Brian Griffin designs and decked mine out with Joe Snarski micarta scales. Only blades I own where the scales cost more than the knives! That’s kinda like when the rims cost more than the car, I guess… LOL

      I've got 2 first production runs of the 9. one still in the box. I also have the 42d. I bough two of the 56m at$8 a piece and two of the 56lm at $15 a piece when they went on sale along with a second 42d for $15 as well. all from SMKW when schrade was selling out its inventory. I should have bought a Jess X two back then but they were already the hollow grind version that was on sale.

    I loved these as budget knives when they came out. I liked a lot of the Brian Griffin designs he did with Schrade; he had a very cool little companion blade too. I have both the SCHF9 (carbon steel) and the SCHF9N (stainless). Kind of a pain to resharpen, but absolute beasts. This would always be on my short list for people looking for a big camp/outdoors knife. Great to see them back and performing well. Thanks for giving these a look Chris,

    LOL, very nice review of it Chris. It's not all bad then I guess. After reading they're made in China now I am glad I asked them to remove my name and logo from them when we parted ways. I suspected from conversations with my brand manager they would move production of it to China I don't want my Dad's name on anything made in China, that's what caused us to part ways to begin with. I see they made new molds for the handle scales, I hope the new scales are better than the old ones were. At least they had enough since to not do the same silly hollowgrind they did on the SCHF9N in the sillier 8CR13MoV steel, certainly not a steel I'd choose for an "extreme survival knife" personally. If I ever run into Morgan again I may have to apologize for my comment on the old sheath system.

    I looked at the 9 when it came out but didn't like the thought of sharpening the recurve on it. Otherwise that whole line seemed pretty good, especially the ones with G10 scales.
    Aren't these coated? I thought, but also haven't tried, using it with a ferro rod wouldn't work. I thought you need bare steel for them to strike sparks. I guess I need to try it with my ESEE before I grind off the coating in a section of the spine.

    I've got two schf9's. one modified. one just the edge angle changed. after 10 years of just using the modified one and keeping the other packed away as backup, I decided to get the Rekon. I live in S. Fl. and thought the AUS 8 to be a good option for our rainy season. It is and your right. I wear it in the cordova sheath meant for the schf9, and use the rekon sheath to store the schf9 in. The Rekon deserves the Griffin stamp on it. Too bad it doesn't have it. I've enjoyed it the two times I've taken it out for a weekend so far.

      I could.... If they listened to me like they did back in the day. I discovered the flaw in the Scaxe2 and 4 and they fixed it. I helped them a LOT and they got popular enough for the current owners to buy it. Something happened at that first turnover that usually happens when companies get sold where they look for ways to make more money.
      I blame the previous boss because he straight lied to my face when Jess-X got hollow ground suddenly and the heat treat was rushed. I worked in a machine shop fabricating metal parts. I know how step by step QC works. You don't "accidentally" make 2,000 knives with a completely different grind. He flat out said "hollow grinds are cheaper because it's one step on one machine."
      Sometimes a hollow grind works. But not usually with big choppers and especially not splitters. That "Bolo" seems to be an exception.
      Different steels can be good if you got the individual heat treat down.
      Schrade needs to fix these plastic sheaths. The belt clips are too tight. A passable nylon sheath would be better on this knife. But I'm happy to see this knife retained it's hard use toughness even though it's not 1095.
