Hi Julie, thank you so much for sharing your story. I'm also an American and first discovered WA's native orchids when I visited the Stirling Ranges in Spring. A man named Bully introduced me to many wild and wonderful species on a wildflower tour. I look forward to seeing you repot your native orchid. Take courage!

@thewealthofnations4827. I've taken that same tour with Bully and his lovely partner. She was wonderful and very knowledgeable. Not that Bully wasn't, but she pulled me aside a few times to show me special carnivorous plant species. She was Noongar and really had great pride in showing and telling me about the plants. She even shared some of the First Nations peoples names for the plants. Absolutely fabulous time.
Are you still in the Perth area? Not many Americans over West.

@@JuliesOrchids i'm here still. I love it here. I actually make the native orchids as an art form. I use various materials to bring them to life. I'm having an exhibition in Mundaring soon.

Most of the component of hard water is calcium carbonate, which is not bioavailable. In an acid environment (below pH 6.5), some of that calcium will become calcium chloride, which is bioavailable but it is a finite reaction and no matter how acidic you make the water you cannot convert more than 5% to CaCl2. So acidified hard water will provide your plants some calcium.
And in much the same way as CaCO3 leaves residue on your shower, it will also accumulate in your media and on the roots when it dries. And it is that accumulation on the roots that causes them to die, not because it is toxic but because it makes the velamen impermeable to water and they desiccate because they cannot take up water.
