Howdy All. I'm Julie, from Perth, Western Australia. I am American/Australian, having migrated from Illinois, in 2013.
I'm a new grower and absolute expert at nothing in the orchid hobby.
I currently grow all my plants indoors. I use inorganic pumice as a media and semi hydro set up
I have mostly intermediate plants with a few in my collection either being HOT or COOL. I am trying to obtain at least 1 species of the differing kinds of orchids I have. I have a fondness for phragmipediums.
I am want to share my experiences in growing orchids in my home in Western Australia. The struggles and joys. I may include the occasional trip "out bush" to show some native Western Australian Orchids in situ and given permission, show some of the local orchids from the local societies shows.

ORCHID CARE TIPS & TRICKS: PH METER MAINTENANCE #growingorchids #orchidchat #orchid #orchidtips
How is this different from an oncidium?
It’s an intergeneric hybrid between a brassia and couple oncidiums. This one is a cross between Brassia arcuigera x Oncidium wenworthianum x Oncidium sotoanum
I've always liked the blooms on this one, but the size was a disappointment when I saw them in person. It isn't surprising that you would get a branching spike with sotoanum as a parent. I wouldn't expect much more than what you have, but you never know. More blooms can't hurt, right?
Maybe 2 spikes next time?? A girl can dream 😴.
Your Brassidium is a beauty! I wish I had the space for one. Don’t you wish the fragrance of many orchids in bloom could be bottled up and kept for the seasons when nothing is in bloom?
Nice blooms
Thank you
8:48 Really shiny leafs on the hieroglyphica. 😳 9:23 The first schilleriana that I got last year is already in full bloom with 7 flowers. The only pests that I've encountered so far are one mealy bug, a snail, and fungus gnats. Each orchid I have has its own sticky trap and I also have an electric bug catcher in all rooms. 11:27 It's really nice to see the Kandyan Dancer again. It will be really fun to see it when it's in full bloom! 12:40 My two psychopsis that I repotted together in November has a new leaf with two more on the way and some roots that already travelled to the bottom of the pot! I took a gamble by getting it but its doing well for me. 15:44 I wonder when my Yellow Bird will bloom. I just got it during the summer though! 😅 17:45 Eventually I'm going to have the Sharry Baby, but I'll need the space first! 😅
Hi Joe, thank you for your support and comments. I’m hoping that you can avoid thrips and mites…. So hard to get rid of.
So many infected plants I feel for you girl. At least some of the ones you got from me are still alive surprisingly.
That one Catt is chugging along. I’m anxious to see that thumia bloom.
I have several of the same orchids that you do and was especially interested in how they are doing for you. Your Prosthechea cochleata is so much taller than mine! I may have to move it to a different shelf eventually. It was a tiny 6“ tall rescue from a friend 1 1/2 years ago, but each new growth is double the size of the last and it blooms on each growth. Brassavola digbyana is such a struggle! I finally moved mine to a large basket with lava rock and medium bark. It hangs right under my spider farmer grow light and seems to like the intense light. The root growth is much, much better, but they all want to escape their home and go everywhere. I’m not sure if this is a good long-term solution or just a space hog. 😂
Hi Linda, Thank you for sharing your orchid experiences. Seems to me like you’re doing great…consistently bigger growths is great. 👍. Brassavola digbiana is a fickle one.
Looks great
Thanks 🙏
Excellent video!! So much so that YT would not let my previous comment stand! 😡a video that calls out misinformation in the orchid hobby, points out bad actors and backs it up with proof... isn't it astounding, that YT would not allow a comment which is expressing gratitude and appreciation for a video like this, to be made public? Amazing! I shall try again and express my appreciation for your informative / warning video, once again... gladly! 😘 thank you for this video and for making it clear that cigarettes, no matter in which way shape or form do not belong anywhere near our orchids 👍🏼 and thank you so much for the shout out! I appreciate everything about you 😘 hope you are having a wonderful week. 💐 are waiting for you in your office 🫶🏼❤
Nina, I never saw any comment from you before this one, on this video. I'd like to know what you talked about....I guess the content creator doesn't even get to see. Thank you for your kind words and your support of my channel and for being a friend. Hope you are having a good day. Your latest vid was great..really informative.
that's even crazier than the idiots that put ice cubes on their orchids!!!!!
Exactly 👍 thank you for watching
Could I have the address please?
nicotine is actually a very good pesticide, it was used pre-synthetic pesticides in the form of nicotine sulphate. The problem is that it was widely known as being extremely environmental toxic, especially to the person applying it. In modern times, it has been formulated into compounds called neonicotinoids which are systemic so less environmentally toxic but present in the pollen and so harmful to bees. Also so potent that predator insects that consume pests that have ingested neonics will also be killed. Now, you could use cigarettes to make a tea to use as a pesticide but you would have to deactivate the virus. The problem with TMV is that it has one of the highest known temperature-stable protein coats. In order to ensure the virus is destroyed, it has to be heated to 125 C (260 F) for ten minutes. To do that in a home, you would need a pressure cooker that can sustain 40 psi to cook the tea in. Simply not worth the risk.
Thanks Michael, I did spend about 8 hours on research for this. I opted for a less technical approach. I threw up a few “less technical “ articles that I feel most people could understand- scientific jargon can be confusing 🫤 big words like neocicotinoids can be intimidating to a layperson. Plus, most viewers- I think- aren’t going to be able to whip out a pressure cooker- nor want to deal with all that hassle for a 10 mins cook. Easiest to just Not do it. It be nice if the original channel I am reacting to, at least mentioned that there is risk of infection with TMV and the other documented issues with using nicotine as a pesticide …damage to non target insects and pollinating insects, like you mentioned. I felt throwing all that into the video would make it too long, plus my aim was to point out the “clickbait” there is some logic to using nicotine as a pesticide, as you and they and I mentioned, but as you and I mentioned…the risk is to great. That’s the point…reputable growers and content creators are pointing out the risks -you and I are, Nina is ect-that channel is not. Not even mentioning that there is any risk.
Great video
Thanks 🙏
I hate seeing this click bait videos having millions of likes and shares millions and millions comments that saying thank you. I will try this 🙈 And this videos as yours telling the truth but getting few comments and few like even hundreds of likes not enough!!! Thank you so sooo soo much doing reality videos and trying to wake up this amateur growers 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Just trying to help people to NOT kill their orchids. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Snake oil sellers, that's what these channel are. They don't care if they spread wrong information, they don't care about orchids either. All they care about is views and earn money from them 😢
You are exactly right..snake oil. Thank you for watching and Fernanda, thank you for your real and informative UA-cam channel
Most of these channels you alluded to give out useless and sometimes deadly information for orchids. Every video is the next best thing from their pantry that will be the miraculous cureall for an orchid! This cigarette idea however is just a terrible way to kill probably all the orchids in a collection. All these channels want is the advertising revenue. What orchid growers should do is report the channels. If enough of us do this, hopefully UA-cam will take notice.
I have reported this channel on. multiple videos,and.......UA-cam - in their creator side- offers this exact channel to me for inspiration for videos to make for my channel. I have even reported this through the youtube partners program and CRICKETS...
@JuliesOrchids With the lack of support I can now see why some people are leaving for other platforms.
This crap is getting huge view numbers and all the comments (maybe AI?) say thank you so much...just how????
Your guess is as good as mine. Thank you for watching and commenting
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you 🙏
I always find it amazing that zygo pseudobulbs come with these bits of decay which may become an issue / pose a threat. I mean, why? Snails, possibly... but still... they are so susceptible to any little damage. I am certain that, with your care and what you have already achieved with the zygos you have, its going to grow well. What a cutie! 😍 yes, I mean you but that seedling is as well 🥰😘
🤣 thank you 🙏 you cutie 🥰 too.
5:44 looks like a Stapelia species or some sort of relative, like Huernia, what did the flowers look like?
Kalash, the flowers kind of looked like a strange fat ⭐️ starfish?? and they stink. My friend Helen let me take the cutting, she told me the name of it, I didn’t write it down and totally forgot it. Plus I keep forgetting to ask Helen what it is…we usually chat about orchids. Looking up Stapelia…. I believe you are right. Remembering the flowers, I’m pretty sure it’s Stapelia variegata. Great eyes on spotting that and Thank you 🙏.
Hello from Brisbane and you have an amazing set up to grow these high humidity requiring orchids in dry boned Perth. Have subscribed to your channel
Aww 😊 thank you so much ☺️. It has been a bit of trial and error but I think the ‘chids are happy 😃
I just can't with that spike! 😅 amazing! I am so sorry about the thrips... madness, when you think that everything coming from a grocery store should be 100% 'ready to eat' without a threat of pests. wow! So so sorry 😢 love all your blooms, though 🥳 so excited to see what you do with the orchids once they get to go outside. One day at a time, though, you have been super busy 🥰 hope your day was fabYOUlous, amiga mia ❤
Hola Nina, that spike has me worried...lack of space to move around...especially with all those other spikes going on. I sure hope I got the thrips under control as I have recent deflasked some species Catts. Thank you for watching and big hugs to Alex and ear scratches to King and Baloo
Those are some incredible spikes!!! Navigating through your grow room will be tricky but so worth the effort. Everything looks nice; it almost motivates me to organize my grow space. I’ll look forward to seeing your blooms!
Hi Linda, yes it’s getting a little cramped in the grow room. Thank you for watching.
Hey girl, they sure have been in the wars! I think you need some serious wind action in the room, just saying’. spacelatum, once they get goin’, no stopping ‘em. Hope you’re gonna be kicking yours heels up on New Year’s Eve. Have a good one, from wintery Thailand.
I had to take the second fan out to film. I’m staying in on NYE…that’s amateur night.
6:04 I got my first two Psychopsis in September and they were repotted together during the first week of November after new roots emerged on both. Both are doing well and have new leafs. One is already 5-6" long. I've been weighing it before and after watering and it has been gaining weight. I'm curious to see how it will continue to grow especially next year when it's warmer. It will be really fun to see both oncidiums in bloom especially the one with the 6ft spike! 😁
Congrats on the psychopsis x2.
Very beautiful plants dear new friend 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

I can’t wait to see the bloooms for real
Bulbos are one group of orchids I just can't get into. There are only three species I can think of that I would even consider, but the blooms are all so small, I'm not inclined to grow them. (pretty much any orchid with tiny blooms I'm not having because I won't be able to see them)
Hi Michael, thank you for your kind words. I like some of the flower shapes and the stinky ones will hopefully attract flies towards my carnivorous plants, at least that’s the plan.
Hey girl! That’s a grotty lookin’ specimen but you can work your magic on it. With those pieces of media, my routine is to cut with secatuers right through the middle of it avoiding any roots. Usually parts of it will break off leaving much smaller pieces. Works well for me, or let’s say it used to as I no longer use all that gear any more. It’s mounts and charcoal for me now. Good luck with it.
Ahhh, you know how some plants on the sales table can look. It’s actually doing quite good. It’s liking the new setup and grow room
Lucky girl! The other plant is a Spathoglottis. Hmmn, watched a bit more and saw a closer view of the top of the plant, if not Spathoglottis it’s the Chinese ground orchid, Bletilla Striata. The leaves of both these plants are quite similar. Spathoglottis tend to have a lot of blooms on the inflorescence and when finished there are lots of nubbins where they have fallen off.
Must be bletilla looks to have had just one flower.
That ansellia is huuuugge! 😅 wow! I hope your scale clean up was satisfying and easy to do. Love this idea of ‘help me repot divide and you get a piece!’ That’s a great deal and incentive 👍🏼 thank you for the shout out! Either way, I hope you like what you see when your ground orchid blooms 🤞🏼 also, I hope you are having a beautiful summer’s day. Flipping cold here but some orchids need watering, regardless. Much love to you and Hapi ❤❤
Yes it is huge, good thing the back garden is coming along. It’ll live out there soon.

5:28 Really nice pattern for this Zygo. I really like Zygo flowers and I haven't tried to grow one yet. Maybe next year if there's space. 😅

Lovely hall thx for sharing
Thank you for watching
Happy birthday Julie! Nice plants, not sure about the stinky one though😂😂😂
Thank you Justin, if the stinky one helps attract flies to my nepenthes and other carnivores plants, then it’ll be worth it….I think 🤔…I hope
@@JuliesOrchids Yeah just don't get too close😂. I've got a dendrochilum that just opened, it smells somethling like ham or bacon, so weird😂
Happy belated Birthday Julie! What a lovely haul 😁 That Galeopetalum is awesome 🔥 Have a great weekend
Thank you Troy, have a lovely weekend too.
Happy birthday

Old man's beard! I have not heard that term used for the spanish moss in a long time! I cannot even say where I heard it, that is how long ago it was. What fun to see how your mounts are doing. I am glad that the viewer asked for the video and hope that they see it. Wishing you a wonderful Thursday and know that 💐 are in your office for mañana ❤
Thank you my dear friend. I’ve only known it as old man’s beard. I think the name suits
I have a couple of indoor mounts and they are lucky if they get watered once a day and they are fine. The outdoor mounts are lucky if they get watered twice a week (in the dry season). So I wouldn't worry about them getting enough water when you are working.
That’s great. I’ve been worrying about the coming summer….it’s supposed to be hotter than normal and with a bigger bushfire risk.
So beautiful
Thank you for watching
