Julie's Orchids
United States
Приєднався 11 кві 2021
Howdy All. I'm Julie, from Perth, Western Australia. I am American/Australian, having migrated from Illinois, in 2013.
I'm a new grower and absolute expert at nothing in the orchid hobby.
I currently grow all my plants indoors. I use inorganic pumice as a media and semi hydro set up
I have mostly intermediate plants with a few in my collection either being HOT or COOL. I am trying to obtain at least 1 species of the differing kinds of orchids I have. I have a fondness for phragmipediums.
I am want to share my experiences in growing orchids in my home in Western Australia. The struggles and joys. I may include the occasional trip "out bush" to show some native Western Australian Orchids in situ and given permission, show some of the local orchids from the local societies shows.

Bummer on the roots, but double the chance that one of them will grow super well. So there is that!
......Enc. Belizensis, is very beautiful...incredible detail in their flowers...and like most Encyclia they are vigorous quick growers, .... you've only had that plant for 5 weeks maybe......and was repotted a year ago...it must have had an issue before you got it, sorry to see its root condition......I hope it turns around quickly for you.
I’m glad I found your channel. I have just moved all of my stuff to inorganic I’ve grown Cats this way for years and like you said the bark that I get anymore is awful thank you for your videos. They have been gratefully helpful.
I’m glad you found my channel too and happy that you are finding it useful. Thank you 🙏 for your support
Wonderful repot and beautiful plant. Very nice roots that should take off… I love the Purpurata blooms! I think it will love its new setup ❤
Thank you EJ. Have a great day.
I don't know how this video until yesterday. That is a spectacular Phrag. Fabulous blooms. 😍 So my question is, will you allow it to continue blooming until it finally decides to quit? I ask with a chuckle because I have a wonderful Phrag. QF Maria, also a big plant and also a sequential bloomer. Last year, I let it go. The spike itself went to 5.5ft tall and went on to bloom 24 or 25 blooms. After 4ft became a little annoying because it kept twisting the spike to the dominant light source. This year, I'll let 5 or 6 blooms, but by 4ft I will cut the spike to save energy in the plant. Thanks so much for the tip on fertilizing the Phrags. I've still been overfeeding with the obvious browing tips. I did switch a few of my smaller Phrags back to bark mix because of my mismanagement. I rarily feed now, and only the obvious signs of needing some. I may try pumice again in a year after I see good strong growth again. My 3 very large Phrags are surviving me. 😉 Great video Julie, thanks for sharing your success. 🙏😘❤️
Yes Robi, it’s going to be left to bloom out and we’ll see how long the spike gets. How have you been? Thank you for watching
@JuliesOrchids Oh, awesome! I look forward to progress reports on the Phrag. I've been well, extra busy with my other plants, especially now in the heat of summer with temps pushing 40+C. One of the upsides to pumice/semi-hydro their is less concern of drying out during heat waves. Have a great day, Julie! 🙏😘🤗❤️
A mount? You? I guess you don't have an ironwood in the yard to mount it to.
No, I have a teeny tiny yard and only had room to plant 1 tree. I went with a native Western Australian banksia tree. I have orchids larger than that tree currently.
Nice tryout.
Thanks Mark. Hope you are having a good week.
Great repotting video, Julie! I've recently tried smaller pumice stones because of you, and now I think i'm gonna do a 40% Lava Rock 40% Pumice 20% charcoal now, rather than mostly all lava rocks! my recent tutorial (which is still in filipino language, i've yet to upload the english one soon) are in a mix of pumice and lava rocks! and I love it! 🤩💚 Have a wonderful week ahead, Julie! Take care! 💚
Thank you Jad. I look forward to your English video.
Woohoo🎉🎉🎉 awesome long active roots and new roots starting 🎉🎉🎉 this is great! My tags also are placed where the holes are... twinsies 🥰 happy growing my beautiful friend down under ❤
Thank you my friend. Hope you’re having a good week.
Nothing like watching a great repot if you don't have an orchid to repot yourself. I try to copy your method of potting. I bounce between you and Rick L. I pot up my orchids in pebbles, lava rock and charcoal. Good luck with your species Cattleya.
Aww, thank you So much Remae, I truly appreciate your kind words and support of my channel. I have not tried charcoal, I see lots of people like it....I am being selfish and worry of the aesthetic, plus I can't find any locally that is not for the bbq.
Oh noo... scales are another bad one, glad you're taking her out of that situation. Just subscribed to your channel and your almost at 1,000... yay!, be blessed.
☺️ Thanks for the sub! Truly appreciated
Oh I have that one but I have not had it bloom yet. Something to look forward to
Yes, it’ll be a breathtaking experience. The buds are so beautiful when they are first opening and the flower is stunning. Happy to hear that you have this beautiful orchid too.
....I love big plants and big blooms are even better......what a beauty.....wonderful detail of how,... and what you do,... to care for that Phragmipedium......very nice.
Thank you 🙏 Rick. The flower spike is now up to my shoulders.
I think longifolium and its hybrids are the easiest of the Phrags to grow and they bloom for ages.
You sleep in your scrubs!? I used to do that. When I retired, I had to buy clothes because I actually worked all the time and 99% of my closet was scrubs. A beautiful orchid. Just stand her in a nice space on the floor. My oncidium is getting big. I had to move it, because she was touching the grow light.
I have an old old pair or two that are Pjs, they are the best.
Great plant and information
So nice of you
Hello Julie! That's a long LONG spike! And pretty big flower as well! Looks awesome! 😲💚
Thank you 🙏
Hello, Julie! I'm currently here because i'm looking for videos in regards with pumice and lava rocks for cymbidium. i have a cymbidium golden elf that I grew from a single rootless teeny tiny pseudo bulb given to me last 2020. But right now it suffered wit rot, root rot specifically and also affected one bulb. So I unpotted it and sadly there's only 1-3 roots and it divided into two plants now. Currently dunked into a diluted solution of water and Hydrogen peroxide 3% / 10 volumes. Gonna get it out later and dry it and seal the open cuts with super glue. I'll order small pumice later and hope for the best 😩.
Jad, I don’t have any cymbidiums. Maybe try The Orchid Saga. EJ has some in pumice and self watering.
@@JuliesOrchidsThank you so so much Julie! Will check it out! 🥺💚
Oh wow... so that's it's name! That is sooo soo pretty! I really like the golden color it has! 😫🤍 it's soo pretty Julie!
☺️

@@JuliesOrchids beautiful ❤️
interesting that you also have this plant and it is flowering for the first time now, mainly because I have it and it is also blooming for the first time and, one would think, they should be blooming on opposite ends of the calendar (given we grow in opposite hemispheres). The shape on yours is better than mine, your blooms are flatter, mine are more cupped from the aurantiaca parent, making it difficult to photograph. But, on the flip side, mine carries more of the orange than yours. Your blooms are also significantly larger, from the verrucosum parent.
The seasons here are off the norm. All the local growers are commenting about this or that blooming way off schedule. They grow in shade or glass houses. Climate change anyone?
Love iy, nicely growing. Remember it's a first time bloomer.
Thank you Marc, I sure hope it's next spike is normal as the flowers that were correct, were lovely. Thank you for watching.
That color though!! She is going to be a biggie with the wonderful care you are giving her🎉 hope you like what you see on her next bloominh. If not, she is going to be a desired orchid to swap for something you like. Pepper? Mmmmmhhh steak! 😂😂 hope your day os going beautifully for you, amiga ❤
Hola my Friend, the color is fantastic.... I am super hopeful that next go around... all the blooms are normal. Thank you for watching and I hope you are having a wonderful weekend.
I’ve bought Barrita orchids & like you, I don’t like styrofoam. They need watering every day which is difficult so I place little bits of bark around the styrofoam. This seems to slowly get the seedlings used to a different media until they’re big enough to repot.
Yeah it’s rough when the seedlings come in styrofoam. Sounds like adding the bark is working well for you. Keep up the good growing. Thank you 🙏 for watching
She is absolutely beautiful ❤️.
Thank you 🙏
Oh wow... the color is so beautiful! I love it!! 🥺💚 How unfortunate that we don't have these varieties here in our country. If there are some, they're expensive as heck! 🤧
Jad, if I could send you one I would. Thanks for watching
@@JuliesOrchids Aww thanks so much, Julie! Indeed if only the shipping rates are cheap/affordable and if only out countries where not so distant 🤗
Sensational 🙌🏼 congratulations!! 🥳 looking forward to that video!! Hope you are having a relaxing evening 😘
You Know I was just thinking about you..How are you my friend. I might shoot you an email...
I got my first two last year in November and they were in bloom for about two months. Paphiopedilum Delightfully Fred (Delightfully Wood 'Tall Elegance' x Grand Fred 'Dorsal Red') Paph. callosum 39.55% Paph. sukhakulii 23.85% Paphiopedilum Hawaiian Star (Memoria Barbara Duncan 'Predominantly Red' x Hawaiian Treasure 'Incredible') They are both currently regenerating with new leafs. I repotted both while in bloom and then again after the pot got infested by mites during winter. I have mine in a small bark mix with some coconut husk/chips and on hot days they can dry out in about two days. I prefer paphs with mottled leafs since they still look nice even when not in bloom. 14:15 I've heard that paphs don't mind repotting and I find the thicker roots easier to deal with than an oncidium type orchid with very thin roots. I found some information online while I was researching care that I'd like to share here. Limestone cliff growers: • Delenatii • Hirsutissimum • Philippinense • Spicerianum Cool Growing: • Insigne • Fairrieanum Moderately cool: • Hirsutissimum • Villosum • Spicerianum • Venustum Moderately warm: • Multiflowered kinds such as phiiippinensis, parishii, haynaldianum Warm: Stonei High Elevation Paphs: Delenatii and Wardii 7:47 To prevent fungus gnats with all of my orchids that do not produce "aerial roots," I place a thin layer of lava rock at the top and add one sticky trap.
Thank you. My Paph spicerianum won State Champion Paph, and State Champion Species, Western Australia 2023. It does just fine in home conditions...or intermediate temps. As does philippeniss, charlesworthii, venustum and delenatii. I avoid Paph insigne and fairrieanum because of where I live. For the most part, in my experience, most Paphs....if you are comfortable with the temperature....so are they. Yes, the slippers- paphs and phrags- don't mind a repotting. I think they actually like it..🙃 Switching over to pumice...my whole collection with the exception of the Native Australian or Native Western Australian terrestrials I have...has been a life changer in regards to fungus gnats. Especially here in the summer. I never had really any fungus gnat issues back in Illinois...only if a banana went off. Here in WA...different kettle of fish totally. I kept drosera Sundew carnivorous plants around my orchids for that. Now, in pumice....I don't have any fungus gnats and my drosera have died...
5:26 One sign that a Coconut Orchid isn't getting enough light is that the leaves will stretch out like a Snake Plant. I regret not buying more than one to get a more bushy look. I've only had mine for three months so far...😁
Don’t let it get scale. It’s a nightmare for them.
J&L Orchids in Connecticut had a bunch of them yesterday, but only one was in bloom which was the sample. I forgot that they can rebloom on the same spike for years. I was told that they need to dry out in order to bloom and that they come from the canopy layer of the Amazon jungles.
Mine seems to enjoy the semi hydro setup. Since this video I grew my flower spike- the plants second. I think it just needs to mature a pseudobulb to spike. I got this ones as a bare rooted division. So, it was set back. I grew 3 progressively bigger pseudobulbs. The third and largest pseudobulb spiked and bloomed. I broke it transporting it home from an orchid show 😞
I’d have picked the Brassivola too! Congratulations 🙌🏼
😁
Nice plants
Thank you 🙏
That little den is very adorable. I love it and would snap it up if i ever came across one. Congratulations on getting that one and the cucullata as well! Great haul! Looking forward to your mounting videos 😊 hope you had a great day ❤
Hi Nina, thank you. That lil dend is sure a cutie 🥰. I recorded the mount video and it’s scheduled for release coming soon ish.
Nice haul! Good thing you have a nice orchid society in your neighborhood. Here there are none left, except one that's only for "the rich" and most common people aren't welcome anymore.
Thank you Marc. Your local societies are missing out on a very good grower. Their loss and UA-cam our gain.
@@JuliesOrchids 👍❤🩹
Hey, Julie! Cool haul! and I am jealous that y'all have orchid societies in your local area. Here in our town and both the province and city, we don't have shows anymore. The last one I remembered was 10 years ago I think, back then I was in 5th grade 😔. I was a happy kid when I saw the notification that there's a new upload from you! In my case, I took a rest from uploading for a day or two since most of them are unboxing! Hahaha and maybe later i'll edit an unbagging video if I won't be attacked by laziness 😂
And congrats on the raffle win! 🥳 The zygonis pretty pretty as well!
Aww 🥰. Thank you. I’m surprised there aren’t any shows near you anymore.
@@JuliesOrchids Yes, sadly. But maybe soon, I might be one of the people who are gonna revive orchid and plant expos here and establish out very own local orchid society 🤣💚

I love orchid,
Me too. Thank you for watching.
Beautiful Yaya! Means alot to me because it’s what I call my mom. I gifted it to her last year for her bday and it is such a reliable bloomer.
Love it!!😊
Great that they are better now 😊
😀
Exactly! The very reason I switched to mainly Lava Rock, Pumice and Charcoal! They're great for my environment since the rainy season here is quite long and very wet, thus inorganic and fast draining media are really my best friend in this situation! Just ordered a few more bags of small sized red and black lava rocks and a bag of pumice.
Not to mention, they're cheap as heck! ot thing that's making it a bit pricier than it actually is, is the shipping fee😭 the way the shipping cost is way more expensive than the rocks themselves. But oh well, it is inevitable since Philippines has three main land masses or group of islands, and i'm located in the middle of the 1st and 3rd, and yeah it has to be shipped frok far away so 😂 but it's all worth it so i'm okay~ hehe
I can understand shipping. I’m in Perth … the not Sydney side of Oz. Almost thing is shipped or trucked in. But, now you don’t have to purchase it again. Unless you just are out and actually need more 😂.
Awww, happy to see that the other is bouncing back! 🎉 Great signs of awesome care provided by the grower (it means your awesome, Julie) 🤗
🥰awww thank you 🙏☺️
I definitely agree that the first one is toast. The second looks like a possible kingianum hybrid? Those things are tough as nails if it is. Meanwhile, over here, the Dendrobium bensoniae that I received on August 17, 2022 from Thailand that immediately went dormant just started swelling an eye. Yes, 21 months after I received it, finally doing something.
Better late than never?? I have a celogoney Unchained Melody that has done the same to me,,then when I finally put out x 2 new growths.....the spidermites .......attacked it.
The fact that your second one is bouncing back so well, is fantastic news! Really happy to see that you have success with one of them 🎉🎉
One freebie is better than no freebies 😉. Thank you for watching my friend. Hope you’re having a good day. Give all yours hugs from us.
CURBSIDE SHOPPING IS THE BEST! It’s technically illegal now here in Victoria but people still do it. I got some awesome IKEA shelves from the curbside a few months ago. Where there is green, there is hope! I wouldn’t be tossing out number 1 yet. Of course it’s up to you, and it’ll be pushing uphill - but I’ve seen worse recover, fwiw. But it’s really about whether or not you can be bothered.
Verge shopping is illegal in VIC.....?????......that SUCKS. I relied on it when I first moved here. Still have the best wicker laundry basket ever, I found one day walking home. Also found an awesome old map of WA. From the 20s on the verge that I took home. Thank you for watching my friend.
@@JuliesOrchids once upon a time, it was organised to be on a specific date, once every few months. So everyone put out their hard rubbish on the same evening and you’d see all your neighbours as you looked through each other’s stuff and collected what you wanted. Then councils changed it because “it created traffic management issues”. Now, you can book a hard rubbish collection with your council. But once it goes out front, it’s considered council property so if you are caught taking it for yourself, it’s theft. Bonkers really….
Question can I repot an orchid in a clay pot ?
Yes 👍.
Mine are 10 or more years old flower 2 tines every year. Actually do not do that much to them. They live in a bathroom.
They must be happy
Just subscribed- love the set up!!! Would love to try it. Will catch up on previous videos and look forward to new ones!!!
Thank you 🙏 Linda
I just can’t get mine to bloom!!!
Give them a night time drop in temperature for a few weeks. 10 degrees should do it.
Beautiful Dendrobium! I have a NOID den. It was a freebie along with an orchid in '22. I potted it up in pebbles. So far it's doing great. I'm waiting for the first bloom.
Hi Julie. Question ❓. Do you use spagnum moss to help your orchids grow new roots? I'm experimenting.
No, not my potted orchids. Only my mounts get anything organic. The pumice holds humidity well enough in my environment.
