I think all he means with that is that computers tend to make things more complicated. Back when, if a car wouldn't start, you'd check for air, fuel or spark. Simple. These days it could be literally dozens of reasons.
What's wrong with that? Today's cars are in no way better than they were in 1930s. And the features which are really useful, like AC, have nothing to do with computers.
When i was young. Like the 1960's and 1970's and maybe the early 80's we would put lighter weight oil in the winter time and heavier weight oil in for the summer time. Now use the weight oil the vehicle calls for. You are correct, Scotty. Awesome Video!!

Ive had my 2002 Chevrolet Suburban 5.3 since 2010. Engine has 190k on it, still runs like new and starts first try. Love that absolute UNIT of a vehicle
Scotty, as a do it yourself car buff I really appreciate all the valuable information that you provide to your readers. I have learned many things for your advice and information that you provide. Keep up the good work. From Toronto Canada
Many cars have a main battery fuse and secondary fuses....In case you do jump it backwards the fuse will pop . Preventing you from shorting anything out.
If you are using a portable jump pack chances are it wont let you even use it if the cables are reversed.due to the built in safety features With jump cables common sense applies when you are using...just pay attention. Unless you are extra SPECHUAL.
So a fuse works via current and time... At the point you are flowing enough current to blow the fuse bad things are already happening. It would take a reverse polarity diode diode circuit to prevent damage.. Not real sure why this is not there but typically it is not... So don't reverse polarity.
then give it a try and see what happens. the fuse only blows out after it got to hot and allowed power to go the wrong direction into places it never should have with to much voltage.
yeah and most battery fuse is 60 amps. while things like computer fuse is 7.5 amps, so all the little fuse might blow, and the circuits in the computer.
Everyone commenting to not start the car because of the thumbnail should know this one extra thing! Never keep your car key with your other keys. The weight of the keys will put stress on the ignition and cause it to wear out prematurely. Instead keep it separate and have a door only key on your key chain (in case you lock your keys in your car). That's the only thing I can think that's practical good advice. The other item dealing with the thumbnail would be to not start it too long or twice.
Or you can just get in the car and drive it like it was designed to be driven to where you need to go, and appreciate that it brought you there reliably? :/
I started watching Scotty years ago when I had a Honda Accord and needed a lot of things fixed, nowadays that I have my Toyota Tundra I just watch him to give my man some views! Always Good info Scotty, keep it up!

Right you are scotty! No nitro in the tires... I just check my tire pressure every week.. And I have a portable 12v air compressor in my vehicle. I am not paying for air!
@@danithaman4610 Hmmmm! You could say that I paid for the ability to pump air for myself without additional cost... Plus I have helped people out on the road who had flats.. I would say that's a win, win! Helping your neighbor feels good!
I'm even cheaper. I use one of those foot pumps, which is fine for car tires, but quite the workout with those big ones on the wife's SUV. Don't do it hungover in July.
My dad lives a couple miles from a gas station with free air pumps. But instead of driving in, he bought a BIKE tire to top off his tires. Granted, it was GREAT exercise, but that was rediculous! Last year at Christmas, we got him a plug in electric air pump, boy, he sures loves that!
I had a celica like scotty for 10 years with 130,000 miles on when sold and it never missed a beat it even had the origional battery still on it when sold! - was sad to see it go but I wanted the newer celica before they got too old and ive had my celica gt (UK equivalent to gts) for over 7 years now and has only needed a new battery. It's 12 years old now with 90,000 on the clock. I want a celica for my next car - but they don't make them anymore and mine is the latest and last produced!
Good info, am happy and proud to drive a 2008 Hyundai Accent old generation that has done 76k kms and it returns 16kmpl in city traffic and 21kmpl on highway, I never required any spare parts replacement except oil and and coolant change, the car runs smooth and recently I replaced the power window lever for the front door, it just cost me only $10 including Labour charges, the late 90s Korean cars were very well built specially the one with Mitsubishi engines.
I have my tires filled with nitrogen, but here's why: I purchased a 2017 Tacoma and I realized after about 6 months of owning it how annoying TPMS was during cold months. Spoke to the dealership and got the air replaced with nitrogen for free. I only use it to keep my TPMS light from turning on during the colder days, and not because it "leaks slower" as some believe. I just don't want my truck to alert that it's got low tire pressure until after they've warmed up a little.
LOL love the presentation! Nice tips for the layman! I'm a 20 year wrench and didn't know about voltage in the coolant system! In a factory dealership, they push flushes too! Total rip off unless outlined in the maintenance schedule! Fuel additives are necessary in the salt belt because of the ethanol content in our fuel, btw.
Scotty, wanted to make one point about nitrogen. I use it because it won't explode if you have a blowout or are in an accident. I pay $24.95 for the life of the tires with unlimited refills. I usually do that once a month and the tires I buy last at least three years. That's about .69 cents a month. Great show and yes my next car will be a Toyota.
Scotty- I had a car with after market rims on it that road heavy and hard until I put Nitro in the tires. The pressure didn’t fluctuate as much and the performance improved.
1-Never poop in the glove box 2-Check for recalls on the canoodler valve 6 times a week 3-Don't drive into volcanos 4-Don't buy reman johnson rods 5-Don't take a drink of coffee while you're going over a speed bump
I like to add a small amount of Marvel Mystery Oil to my gas for upper cylinder lubrication. Nitrogen in tires is absolutely ridiculous. The air we breathe is 78% nitrogen. an extra 21% isn't going to make any noticeable difference.
I bet it makes a huge difference in temperature changes using Nitrogen in those stupid cars that tell you that you have a tire low on air. Temperature changes make those TPMS go haywire all the time, so glad I no longer have a vehicle with that crap...yet another nonsense feature that cost you a fortune when it no longer works properly.
Before I got rid of it, my 05 Blazer seemed to like a bottle of Lucas to the fuel tank once in awhile, but i guess it was an illusion and i was wasting money.
i still think adding seafoam and some other additives help.also i never changed coolant in my 18 year old truck ever...i have added about a gallon during that time though...it is a florida truck with 105 k miles...only work or parts replaced is batteries 4 times and plugs one time... and brakes and tires...
ahhh i see, the reason you have not noticed anything wrong yet is because you have never had to use the heater. your in florida, it might be clogged up good. but i am betting you got the good old green stuff, way better then the orange dex cool.
i use heater a few times per year... if anything is clogged i have zero signs of it... truck has always run perfect... its a chevy siliverado 5.3 v 8... i change oil every 2 to 3k miles..

scotty, I live in snow country, something i never do is turn on the defroster to clear the snow on the windshield. this just heats the bottom of the windshield with snow still on the upper portion, it will crack, usually clear across the bottom. I would turn on the heat, but just into the passenger compartment, this should heat the whole windshield at the same time. thanks Grover
Wow, thank you Scotty for answering and explaining more thoroughly to my exact question I had just asked about on your channels post from yesterday. Btw my Q was about using the recommended viscosity for your engines motor oil.
I’m so glad you mentioned the nitrogen. I was at Jiffy Lube and they tried to sell me it. I was hesitant and started to consider getting it. Thank you!
My car hasn’t had the coolant changed since 2012. But it tested this winter to be good down to -30. Should I keep running it? The coolant is clean and green.
Coolant comes from 'cool', you know? It's needed to cool your engine first of all. And to prevent radiator rust. You can put watered moonshine into your car if you only drive it in -30. You won't notice a difference. So yeah, you need to change it ASAP, it may cause your radiator to rust and your engine to overheat.
Not exactly. Most newer cars do not have colored cables. Both will be black with just the symbol on either cables and the battery. And not many people pay attention to detail.
Well, a red cover is pretty much the same thing as a red "wire". I meant having red on THAT cable as opposed to the other one, to designate the positive side. Pretty much every car Ive seen has *something* red on the positive side to mark it as positive.
Oil is a lubricant, not a wrench. Putting a heavier oil into an older engine to "tighten things up" is counter-productive! I can't believe people might do that.
The fact is that many manufacturers change their recommended weights over time on THE SAME engine only for increased fuel economy at the expense of engine longevity. Now, I wouldn't recommend putting a 15-45 diesel oil in your car to stop a leak, but running most 10 year old vehicles on 5w30 instead of their recommended 5w20 is not going to ruin anything.
Heavier oil will increase oil pressure and fill tolerances in a worn out engine. No point in doing it unless you've got a rod knocking or something. Of course with newer VVT engines scotty is right, but it can be done on older engines. Usually at that point the engine is pretty much toast anyway so it's not too much of a concern what else might be hurt.
Welp gezums me timbers...i had me a 1989 mazda with like 300k on it and used bar and chain oil.. The only oil that wouldn't leak and burn out in a day...and nope...me never walked bcs two birds in thw hand is better than one in the air....
I would recommend that you start running thinner oil as soon as possible. You're doing nothing but harm to the engine. Ford modular engines don't like thick oil. The factory recommended oil for those cars isn't 15w40 either. Ford recommended 10w30 until maybe the early 2000s, then switched it to 10w20 for fuel economy. I'd say run 10w30. 100k ain't that much for a modular, you shouldn't need to run anything besides the recommended weight.
Scotty!! I just discovered you and you are my new hero. Secondly, people should engage their emergency brakes before shifting a car into park! (or into gear in a manual trans) One should put all the weight of your car on your e-brake (aka *parking* brake) instead of your easily destroyable and expensive to replace transmission.
I have put 10w 30 in my hyundai i20 whereas the recommended oil is 5w30 . My car has done 145000 kms. Local mechanic said it would not make any difference. However, My car is more audible , a little bit running less smooth, and doesn't wanna go high revs also sometimes needs shifting a gear down doing uphills. Gentle driving is acceptable. It doesn't wanna be reved hard. However there is no change in fuel efficiency. So what I mean is I could feel the friction and the car slows down by itself without having to use the brakes..whereas before it was crazy smooth and I had to shift down to 2nd gear mostly to keep it I speed limits ..now it can manage itself at 4th gear..and many times in 5th..without having to use brakes...should I drain and put 5 w 30 grade . It's a naturally aspirated 1.4 petrol engine. Cheers Love your videos
My dad had a 1969 GMC 2 TON Truck with a 366 Big bock and still had original anti freeze, I was scared too change it couse i thought it might couse more problems,
I relate to the oil viscosity topic. My 2010 Prius cap said use 0W-20 but the Toyota dealers said it was fine to use their bulk purchased 5W-20. The manual specifically said you could use 5W-20 for one oil change but go back to 0W-20 on the next. I stopped using that Toyota dealer for any further service.
Hey, Scotty. The Federal Aviation Administration requires shops to service aircraft tires with nitrogen. This is not because nitrogen is a nerve gas, it is actually because nitrogen does not fuel fire like oxygen does. The whole idea is that aircraft blow tires all the time, and if by chance a tire blows by a brake disc that's glowing, that can have bad results. Great vids!
Old antifreeze becomes acidic ... ate a head gasket in an old Civic of mine. Color was fine, specific gravity was fine ... so I didn't change it, not even after several years.
VD or Voltage drop will happen at any point on the car. I'm old school, so I don't know a lot about these modern engines. :But putting one end of the probe and another ground part of the car is going to show something. Also To my knowledge the radiators still rarely directly touch the car, only the in and output transmission tubes, which are grounded with metal straps to the chassis.
TLDR: 1.Never Jump start your car backwards. 2. Never add fuel additives. 3. Never put heavier weight oil into an older engine. 4. Don't waste money filling tires with nitrogen. 5. Change your coolant once every three years.
I just got a 2018 Ford Ecosport 1.0L 3 cylinder engine. Car exhaust smells like ammonia. Dealer says it's new car smell. Is this true? Ammonia is a strong smell.
I flush coolant yearly. Put your coolant through a coffee filter through a Funnel into a buck and you will be shocked at what is in their. Change it!!! Your radiator will last forever
Nitrogen makes a lot of sense for cars in Canada who have separate wheels with winter tires on them. Some people stick with all-season tires all year. And in certain places where the temperatures range from 30 Celsius in the Summer to - 30 Celsius in the Winter, it can make a difference with Nitrogen.
Hey Scotty , couple of counter points please 1- some GDI/DFI engine designs allow for the fuel to be sprayed from the injector to the back of the air intake v/v thus fuel additives such as Liqui moly can help between professional cleaning .. On the nitrogen in tires actually I’m cold weather of -20 and colder for example , the little moister content in normal air freezes and make the TPMS go crazy and through lots of false errors , so please add these exceptions in the future , I like your channel and I am a big fan , best wishes for many many many more years to come
Idk if you have done one yet but can you do a video on pressurized coolant systems. Maybe a method for getting trapped air bubbles out when you flush and change your coolant?
@@tobias5944 I can get the air out of lines just fine, its the engine block/cylinder head I'm worried about. I've heard these newer cars can get large amounts of air trapped and cause hot spots in the engine and cause overheating. I know my car you can squeeze the coolant hose and hear coolant sloshing in the head. and I'm pretty sure if there were no air in there you wouldn't hear anything. My car runs around 200° f even at highway speeds in 32° weather. To exacerbate things I hit a raccoon last week and have to replace the radiator and fans this weekend and I wanna make sure it get it properly filled.
i disagree with the additive i have 98 toyota 4runner with 242.000 miles on it when i got the idle was around 5 to 600 rpm i have been using berrymans b 12 additive for 2 years since i started using it my rpms are up to 900 pulled the spark plugs and the looked brand new i get better gas mileage better throttle response the engine runs much smoother i swear by it i put it in every outer fill up its only 3 dollars a can. i just got it smogged at my trusted mechanic he said whatever you are doing keep it up it scored lower numbers than a new car.

This is why I have subscribed to Scotty's Channel. Great info.
Many cars have a main battery fuse and secondary fuses....In case you do jump it backwards the fuse will pop . Preventing you from shorting anything out.
Doesnt change the FACT that you SHOULDNT do it in reverse.
So don't reverse polarity.
then give it a try and see what happens. the fuse only blows out after it got to hot and allowed power to go the wrong direction into places it never should have with to much voltage.
yeah and most battery fuse is 60 amps. while things like computer fuse is 7.5 amps, so all the little fuse might blow, and the circuits in the computer.
i love how i drive a celica so everytime scotty does a vid i can learn about my car
Thank you for all the time you´re putting into this! You´re awesome!

Right you are scotty! No nitro in the tires... I just check my tire pressure every week.. And I have a portable 12v air compressor in my vehicle. I am not paying for air!

I have my tires filled with nitrogen, but here's why:
I purchased a 2017 Tacoma and I realized after about 6 months of owning it how annoying TPMS was during cold months. Spoke to the dealership and got the air replaced with nitrogen for free. I only use it to keep my TPMS light from turning on during the colder days, and not because it "leaks slower" as some believe. I just don't want my truck to alert that it's got low tire pressure until after they've warmed up a little.
Thank you Scotty Kilmer!!! I very much appreciate your vids.
I'm gonna do all of those things to my car this week to see if it's all true

Green coolant in a Toyota? Wtf were you thinking Scotty?
Hey Scotty, you've been 51 years experienced for a long time now 😎
You ever stop and think, he was a mechanic for 51 years and retired and just working his own and makes videos ? !.
I used to work at a BMW dealership in southern California. They would charge $85 to fill a customer's tires with nitrogen.
At high speeds the nitrogen reduces heat build up, and the migrating rate of escape from the tires is greatly diminished.

If I used that kind of logic, wouldn't 21 percent water in the gas be just fine as well?

Never Rev up your engines.

"They're not all this simple"?? Nearly all other cars have a RED positive battery terminal - much more simple than that Toyota!
Not that I've seen, just a red cover.
Hi BaltimoreAndOhioRR
@@soulless_slayer2396 hi!
(or into gear in a manual trans)
One should put all the weight of your car on your e-brake (aka *parking* brake) instead of your easily destroyable and expensive to replace transmission.
My emergency brake doesn't even work
I have put 10w 30 in my hyundai i20 whereas the recommended oil is 5w30 .
Cheers
Love your videos
Never heard of nitrogen air in tires before. That must of flew over my head. 😁
I always changed the coolest when my radiators need to be replaced.
My dad had a 1969 GMC 2 TON Truck with a 366 Big bock and still had original anti freeze, I was scared too change it couse i thought it might couse more problems,
Only if you flush it . It might pop something but you could always drain it then add new stuff. Then you have to get the air out.
Great vids!
I think it's time to watch your rad flush video scotty
Old antifreeze becomes acidic ... ate a head gasket in an old Civic of mine. Color was fine, specific gravity was fine ... so I didn't change it, not even after several years.

you forget to mention the brake and clutch fluids that need to be changed too
great work Scotty and thanks for all the hard work
VD or Voltage drop will happen at any point on the car. I'm old school, so I don't know a lot about these modern engines. :But putting one end of the probe and another ground part of the car is going to show something. Also To my knowledge the radiators still rarely directly touch the car, only the in and output transmission tubes, which are grounded with metal straps to the chassis.
TLDR:
1.Never Jump start your car backwards.
2. Never add fuel additives.
3. Never put heavier weight oil into an older engine.
4. Don't waste money filling tires with nitrogen.
5. Change your coolant once every three years.

Hey Scotty , couple of counter points please
1- some GDI/DFI engine designs allow for the fuel to be sprayed from the injector to the back of the air intake v/v
thus fuel additives such as Liqui moly can help between professional cleaning ..
On the nitrogen in tires actually I’m cold weather of -20 and colder for example , the little moister content in normal air freezes and make the TPMS go crazy and through lots of false errors ,
so please add these exceptions in the future ,
I like your channel and I am a big fan , best wishes for many many many more years to come

@@tobias5944 I can get the air out of lines just fine, its the engine block/cylinder head I'm worried about.
