I can't thank you enough Noah, I swear sometimes I can get so stressed out but then I think to myself "oh, these are just thoughts in my head they don't mean anything about me,just thoughts, there is nothing to stress about." I feel like I have come so far in these past year , it's crazy, scratch that incredible,Thank you Noah your method has really helped me make it through tough times.

I found your videos in desperation over a breakup I'm going through. I wanted you to know that you seem to have something for my every problem. Also I seem to have every problem you have a video for. You are a wise and compassionate man. You're helping me in a difficult time and I thank you for it. You don't seem to address 'how to stop hurting when someone's broken up with you because you really did deserve it and nothing you can do will ever make it any better."

One of the noblest things a human can do is to work out their own issues, find joy, contentment, and fulfillment within and inside of THEMSELVES and then pass it on to others. :) Thank you for doing your part.

Noah? Are you still on UA-cam? I'd like to tell you that I struggle a lot with a mental illness that almost killed me a year ago. For the last 6 months I've been dealing with horrible nightmares and now I watch your videos before I go to sleep, and it really helps me calm down and feel safer during the night. Your very true words make things easier for me, not a whole lot, but a little bit, and that's enough. And I'm so grateful I found your UA-cam channel. You're so gifted and smart and I thank you a million times for sharing your thoughts with me. Hope you're still on UA-cam.

This is literally the greatest video I have ever seen in my entire life. I am even taking notes on it. Great perspective on the concept that we truly do not know what the future holds and if our decisions are good or bad in the bigger picture. All we can do is work hard and enjoy the journey! Thanks for this

I recently discovered your channel after being taken to the ER 2 days ago and having my heart rate stabilized with some sort of heart pill, and being given lorazepam aka ativan via IV. I had heart palpitations and felt as if i was going to pass out or feint at any second.. along with a racing heart. It was pretty scary and i thought something was seriously wrong with me. They kept me for 3 hours and after all their tests, they chalked it up to being sinus tachycardia most likely brought on from anxiety or stress. Which more or less is just a uncontrollably fast heart rate.. 150bpm in my case.
I have been constantly looking through the internet for help but found none as beneficial as your videos. This was so recent that i need immediate help, and im glad to have found a form of it here.
im only 20 years old, and have a feeling i have a bit of a journey ahead of myself to get over this. I suffer from anxiety, stress, anger and depression issues, but i was too blind to notice all of them until this "breakdown".
I am going to being doing my best to make a conscious decision in staying calm and generally being a more positive, less hateful person.
At this current moment im still getting anxiety attacks, and can feel my heart beat in my chest and neck.. sometimes between my shoulders.. Which always gets me thinking about anxiety and its a endless cycle, but hopefully ill get over this soon.
Somehow typing this all down has made me feel a little better.. or maybe its just me distracting myself aha. Either way, thanks for all the time you put into this channel. I know for a fact you are helping thousands of people.
    Thank you.

Hi , Noah, I have been watching your UA-cam videos, and bought your book (when it is not free by the way haha), they are very helpful, in helping me figure out the fact that sufferings are created by thoughts. Throughout my whole life, both in long term and short term, I had been always looking for things that might make me feel good, such as getting good grades, entering a good school, developing a hobby, or engaging in fantasies of having a dream girl or a dream job. Or in short term, I ate, watched TV or Played games, Chat a lot to make me happy. Of course they both brought me some pleasure, more or less, but I still felt a sense of lack, or a sense of discontent, like a hole that can't be filled. I know now that by themselves their effectiveness of bringing happiness is quite limited.
Logically speaking and by my own experiences, I can see how our attachment to things makes us suffer.
Thinking that some things will bring us happiness (now or in the future), and feel depressed when they don't is not fun at all. Especially for those addictive activities such as watching TV, porn or playing video games, going to movies, having sex..etc, they give pleasure in some sensational ways, but in no way fulfilling.
However, there are still constant urges for me to engage in them. For example, when I am trying to read some books for my entrance test to a school (I know getting into a good school itself cannot make me happy by the way) I still feel strong urges to reading posts on my Facebook, or reading e-mails, watching TV, Porn , and other stuff. Although I am almost always sure they only provide me with temporary distractions(As it always proves to be true later on).
I choose to keep doing them anyway, and in fact they even lose their power of distraction after a short while, it becomes like chewing gum of no flavor, but still I choose to chew it anyway.
I believe I am not the only person who is being stuck in similar patterns.
I watched your videos about stopping procrastinating for many times. You mentioned you makes the thing that doesn't motivate you "neutral". I can see what you are talking about, but when the activity itself doesn't make me interested, it can be hard to say it's neutral, it's a sense of discontent or lack.
I read some books of buddism, and they resonates with you to some degree. Maybe our lives are in its entity "discontent", we are always searching for things that makes us happy in all sorts of ways, then when we achieve them, we either are scared of losing them or just disappointed that they don't bring as much as a long-term happiness as we thought they may.
However, we are keeping doing this anyway. And it seems to be the only way that the world are telling us how to be happy, as in our education, tradition and other scenarios. When people are saying that some things are "right" to do, they are actually saying that doing that thing will make us or others happy in the long or short term, but its doesn't really work because nothing by itself can bring us long-term happiness.
When thinking of this, it makes me feel that every person on the planet is in some degree equal, ugly or pretty, rich or poor, whatever nationalities we are of, unknowingly we are just doing the same thing in different ways, and this strategy rarely works, if ever (as in bringing happiness) and when they work to some degree, we often are scared of losing the happiness they brought again.
Is the entity of life a sense of lack? As for me, "the sense of lack" doesn't seem to be "thoughts" It's more of a thing that's always hidden in the background and even when we are engaging in distractions, we are feeling them knowingly or unknowingly.
If that's the case I think I can try to get used to it little by little, instead of trying to look for happiness in ways that doesn't really work.

Hi Noah! Great video, I feel this has really helped overcome my stress. Something else that is really bothering me though is not stress, but simple discomfort or sadness. More specifically, I don't like going to school :/ Obviously school and my classes aren't causing my displeasure, but I can't quite figure out how to disbelieve the type of thoughts I'm having. My thoughts are basically: "this is boring. I rather be doing something else. This isn't fun. I'm wasting my time." How can I overcome these? It's sort of different than anxiety thoughts. Thank you!!

Although it's not as easy or straightforward as the whole feeling into and letting the energy grow method, it's certainly another tool to use to see what's real and what isn't.

I usually ask those questions, and when I'm at home with my surroundings they work.
But when I'm triggered, the asking of this question in a routine manner often does not work. It's like the words that used to mean so much in safe surroundings have lost all meaning.
Say I'm stressed about a date. I'm asking myself: What's the worst thing that could happen if I blush and everything goes all weird and awkward ?
I know rationally that it'S not much, and 3 weeks before the date that helps ease the tension. Still on the day before my emotions insist on the answer being apocalypse and freak out.

This is good advice. Getting stressful about getting along with people at work and them not liking me. How do I know I want to be their friend? maybe they are annoying. maybe they are bad friends. maybe they are liars or devious. maybe the friendship would lead to spending less time with people I like now. I need help with stress about going in public and being around people I don't know. What if they reject me and call me ugly? Maybe it would be good if they called me ugly? that doesn't really work. you have been great help.

I'm so glad to hear that . I'm always inspired by your speeches . Specially, when i had to deal with my depression . It was you who changed my thought toward myself and everything . Thanks so much !

Hi Noah, thank you so much for all your helpful videos. I wanted to ask you for you help. Everytime i like or find someone attractive, i do the oppsosite of want i wanted to do. Instead being nice or kind, or looking into their face and smile, i even tend to avoid but on the other side i want them to be close to me, its so weird, but i do it automatically, its like a mechanism, please let me know how i can train myself to stop doing it. thank you so much, hugs from Germany

I miss good advice like this. It is time for me to move on from my role at work, but wooo ooo...a former counselor said it best, "You are in a vortex of change..." Well, my efforts to leave have been troubled with no reponses from other organizations. Aaannddd, my current leaders continue to delegate my time and talents to other depts. with no regard to previous discussions of availability, work load, and expectation alignment. Very stressful to say the least, but I have a plan and it's underway. Just dealing with the waiting period toward my deadline has been welll painful. Hmmm didn't intend to say all that, but I do appreciate your more analytical approach for suggestions on dealing with stress. It's inevitable and right now, I've got a lot of it, but I am also persistent and know change of my present circumstances is near. Thanks and cheers!

Hello! I really enjoy watching your videos, and they help me a lot. I just wanted to know if even after all these years you still believe the same things, or have your methods/philosophies changed at all. Do you still stand by everything you've said? Anything new to add?

I might be wrong but like almost all of your videos can be summed up by one sentence: Dont believe your thoughts :D - or at least question them^^

    • @NoahElkrief
      @NoahElkrief  9 років тому +26

Engelberg Yea, I would take that. But, a little more accurately would be 1) discover that thoughts are causing your suffering. 2) identify exactly what thought is causing it. 3) disbelieve that thought. 4) question any reason to keep suffering.

Noah Elkrief Hello Noah. Whilst comforting to believe that we can 'control' thoughts that cause loneliness (or any other negative feeling), it is a little naive to believe that -
      (a) this is all we need to do
      (b) this will always be effective
      (c) this is always within our power
Issues surrounding Lonliness per se, may be so very complex.. for example, those feelings of loss, anger, guilt and despair at the passing of a much loved partner or loved one.
I do like your videos and your presentation is very soothing. Why have you not gifted us with a video recently? Best wishes.

its my mom.. idk why shes a really graet person but everytime she speaks shes always asking me to do something. might be small, might be big. but this has been going on for so long now that the last time i was home alone for a few days i started hearing a car pulling up when there was no car pulling up. before she left the tasks she wanted me to do i did. it was like really easy because she wasnt there. im usually like procrastinating alot but when she wasnt there first thing i did when i came home from school was start working.
i love my mom, and maybe some of the fault is on me or i should say some of it is. but like whenever we talk about this kinda stuff. i always come out as the bad person. lts like telling someone youre tired and they say were all tired. that doesnt change the fact that im tired. with my dad i do stuff i help when im asked to. when i hear her pulling up i get so fucking stressed sometimes. like i know shes gonna ask me something, and yes shes not asking to much of me its just that its been so much and when i think of my mom the first thing that pops up is negativity.

I'm a bit confused as to how one should communicate about things they like or dislike if the whole point is to be neutral. For instance, if I ate something that I really liked for lunch and a co-worker asks me "so did you like your lunch?" How do we communicate our opinions? Thanks!
