Thank you! This helped us in 4H class!

This is very helpful because while I’m riding classical dressage, it’s on a small built downhill stock horse and much of the classical approach hasn’t been working for us.

Sir, you explain things better than anyone I have seen. Some of us ride a lot but we don't ride hundreds of horses so it's hard to understand certain concepts if you have nothing to compare things to. Thank you for not assuming all your audience knows every phrase that every horseman throws around. Even you explaining why you don't post in the trot gave me a better understanding about some things. Thank you.

Thanks for your kind comment. Learning how to explain things is a work in progress that is ongoing. If you don't understand something, reach out, and we'll do better. Thanks again! (Herm)

Some dressage riders train at home for the extended trot while posting. This is due (sometimes ) that the horse is not yet strong or steady enough to sit. Also if the rider is still learning to sit, it is better for the horse not have his back bounced on. The strong horse will let you sit and carry you easier. A very logical video, thank you.

Andrea, thanks for your comment. I completely agree. I would post on the green ones, too, if I wasn't a bit of a cripple. Keep watching, and keep me honest! - Herm

The main thing is to do 3 or 4 strides at a a time. Once you do 3, you go for 4 etc.. We always do a "fake post" (unnoticeable) particularly at the beginning. But if your knee hurts don't do it. Just try to establish very clear and Different instructions for Extend and come back. But you're doing great. You are a great western rider. I do Grand Prix dressage. What a piece of heaven property you have there! Good .uck my friend.

I came across your video while trying to figure out if it’s a trait my quarter horse possesses, because he came from a large ranch it’s something common. I enjoyed your video thoroughly but maybe you can help me with this. He likes to walk minimal even when I’m calm walking he starts picking up the pace into a trot and if you let him go he goes into a bigger trot almost like anxiety built up to go go go.
Someone mention that a large ranches they trot a lot to get from point a to point B so it may be something that stuck with him not sure love to hear what you think thank you.

Sounds like your horse is high energy and maybe a little tense. I doubt it is just from long trotting on the ranch. These horses tend to dream of NOT trotting. You might try gently tipping his nose and bending to a stop each time he starts to speed up, if safety and tension permit. Good luck! (Herm)

I'm having a hard time extending my horses trot and have watched this video several times. Unfortunately I don't think I understand what to do, would you mind explaining it to me again ? I think I need to find a trainer to better my riding .

I’ve been thinking about your question. Problem is, it’s kind of hard and a little irresponsible to try to give advice on a problem like this without actually seeing the horse. There are just too many unknown variables. I like your plan to consult a trainer who can give you some real hands on help. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

Dressage now depends on rolkur which is an abomination. Can’t even watch what passes for dressage let alone train in it.
