I was about to ask if unit veterancy was now possible to some limited capacity and you answered it in the video, I look forward to seeing what you folks decide to do with that, veterancy tends to be a pretty cool mechanic in other RTS games, and I could even see it being used to represent a character's growth as a commander or warrior within a campaign, like for example Luke Skywalker in Imperial Reign developing further as a force hero, or Revan and their companions actually leveling up to an extent in Revan's Revenge, as if they really were characters in an RPG.

*Unit veterancy* and *'leveling' a named unit into higher unit tiers* - e.g. promoting a hero unit, or corvette commander into a frigate or cruiser command, or a named company into a higher tier of infantry or vehicles - would shift game-play toward a higher degree of immersion and strategy due to another incentive to preserve forces in battles...
Truly amazing that Petroglyph has been supporting this game for the past 20 years. Not only is the this a testament to the greatness of the company but of the game they created as well.
