The fact that this nearly 20 year old game keeps getting official patches is proof that it is more than deserving of a sequel.
You could rebuild the game in a modern engine as is, and it would be a good game worth buying.
Well it's the only Petroglyph game that I know of that was a success.
Legends based sequel!
It’s a timeless game. I’d love if they made some official expansions for it or a full on remake/sequel. I’m sure it would be profitable. They could do all three main eras. I think it should still have legends stuff. They could have different modes or stories like a canon campaign, legends, and mixed. Idk there’s a lot they could do.
Why need a sequel when you could just tie up FoC's loose ends via other media like webcomics or sourcebooks?
Man, gotta appreciate Petroglyph for helping a game almost 20 years old thrive. Not a lot of other developers who would do that
They still update their 8-bit armies games too, I think they did some music overhaul this week.
I wish they had the source code for Dune 2000, over the years a few Devs from the Westwood days have tried helping fans get servers recognised as official so we don't have to use third party software to play multiplayer, or even just to play on Windows 10.
Unfortunately every time someone got close they seemingly disappeared, I'm guessing EA stepped in but there's no way to know for sure.
Update sure is timely with Valve and Half-Life 1 in mind.
@@SMthegamer1 OpenRA supports Dune 2000
@@michaelandreipalon359Half-Life 3 confirmed?
@@jukahri Eh, am already fine with Epistle 3 in case Alyx is followed up by a surprise disappointment of a sequel, whatever it may be.
you can really tell how much they care about the modders
Built in Mod support greatly extends the life expectancy of games
@@Ponyman-1997 indeed. In this case its also a lot of love for the game they made, its not like there is a reason for them to work on it, its just a few bucks (often under 5$) and there are no micro transactions like Battlefront & co. has, so they dont really earn anything by doing it, its just awesome that they invested the time.
They could probably be selling the game for 20-30€ today and people would be gladly paying that for nostalgia's sakes alone. Yet these giga chads decide to keep helping their modding community as well even though they dont have any direct monetary gain from it ❤️
The modders are keeping that game selling *long* after release, so it is a mutually beneficial relationship. I picked up Empire at War, oh, 4 or 5 years ago now, after seeing XPSGamers running the mods.
Orginal game?
Wow it's crazy to me that it's getting any updates at all, but porting to 64-bit I would never have expected.
I'm pretty sure some of the mod developers work at Petroglyph. At least 2 are active in the steam workshop.
I wish they would care about other users besides steam. This patch is only for the steam version.
EA refuses to update Sims 3 to 64-bit for PC users, but did it for Mac awhile back. ... Probably because they know people would drop Sims 4 instantly if they did. I'm happy Petroglyph did this.
@@BrainDamagedAutist Oh wow, I hadn't actually thought of that. I still play S3 and it'd be so much better to have a 64bit version.
@@haydentravis3348there is a mod that allows the Sims 3 with 64 bit! It also fixes the MASSIVE loading screen and laggy open world

So great they came in and dropped this update! Well done Petroglyph.
also looking forward to that new RTS they have in the works. Seems interesting.
Well done on the video Corey!

To access your older 32-bit save games, switch to the 32-bit version by selecting PROPERTIES -> BETAS -> 32-bit_version
@@blackburn1489I was going to say that I lost all of my saves after this update came out.

Whoah whoah whoah, whoah. Hold up. You mean the Avenger and Allecto dont have to do 100% of the work for the Imperial Navy anymore?
I hope that I’ll still get to see Allecto often. At first I was annoyed by how I saw it in every battle, but then it started growing on me and now I’m trying to figure out how to add in a custom Star Destroyer just named Allecto
now I’m actually going to miss the Allecto
I havent played EaW for what feels like a lifetime, but I still remember those names. Allecto truly is the 🐐
I love petro, even tho EaW is 15 plus years old at this point, they still set time and money for people to work on issues we find, it's why the game still feels alive, with people like you Corey here to help it!
Got me thinking, maybe they’re eyeing a sequel?
@@playboyj0hnny270They definitely are, it’s just that Disney hasn’t green lit it yet, or at least that’s what Petroglyph have been telling us.
More likely a small group that did it on some "personnal projects half day of the week". Some companies and studios have them so why not. Otherwise from a commercial point of view it makes no sense.
It seems like the most successful and lasting developers set aside time so their people can work on passion projects.
17 years. Quite impressive it got a patch AT ALL! O.o
Imagine a dev team patching a 20year old game mainly to help dedicated modding communities to improve their content. All of this for free. Petroglyph is really an amazing studio
Find you a partner the same way Petroglyph loves EaW.
More like loves the people that loves EaW 👀
Petroglyph is the 🐐
Same with all the mod teams.
they are the Heir of Westwood
Fr
I literally clapped for joy when you mentioned the fix to the ship names thing... such a small thing but so thankful they finally changed that lol
The simple fact they are going back into EAW engine and code might be a sign that they might be gearing up to start working on EAW 2. Only speculation here but one can only hope
they say they want to
Considering what the remake mod managed to do, i can only salivate at the ptospects of a modern engine....
@@trazyntheinfinite9895 I just hope if they do it they don't put system requirements for a super computer
There been rumors of a sequel for a year now from devs themselves.
hints and teases and etc
One of the first steps to remaking Empire at War would be to update the engine for modern systems. They might have released this update to test reception. They know they can remake it, now they need to know if people want it.
Oh wow, I thought it was JUST the 64 bit change. This is pretty amazing for future changes!
Man, this gives me hopes for a EaW sequel.
However, seeing how sequels are being released that bastardize why we loved the original, do we really want to see a sequel?
I don't want to see EaW get Dawn of War 3'ed
Agreed. Heck, even Baldur's Gate 3, for all its quality, isn't a true sequel to the original BioWare duology in my opinion.
With the licensing... there are only iron fists holding onto the Star Wars IP. I doubt we'll see a sequel but that's alright if we get a boost to the modding with this Update. Shame I lost my large galaxy admiral Hapes Consortium save. That's the price of progress I guess.
@@bilbobaggins6251 You can revert back to 32 bit though.
@smol_pupper123 True, but even so, it should be deemed an alternate universe sequel spin-off, not unlike the apocryphal and fan-debasing Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO.
I love how this beloved 17 year old game is still getting official patches.
I instantly thought of How Corey would react to this update when I went on Steam.
same
First Half Life, now Empire at War; I love that older games are still getting updates
This exact situation also happened with Sins of a Solar Empire 2, which is also an old and iconic Strategy space game. People were confused why Sins was getting updates after 10 years and it turns out they were testing player engagement and eventually made a sequel (now early access). Devs don't usually update 10+ year old games just for the sake of being nice, and this is the 3rd year in a row that EAW has been updated.....so maybe something is actually happening? One can dream
They are not currently making a sequel or remaster, they've been very open about wanting to and the fact that they aren't. These patches have been going on since 2017/2018.
@@CoreyLoses Did they mention which obstacles prevent them of making a sequel?
@@AnimeFan-dl4qddisney I believe

RIP Alecto, you will no longer be every single ISD1 I build.
Also, with how the specific units presist between tactical and galactic level now, is there a chance of something akin to a veterancy mechanic reentering into the discussion of possibility?
The moment you said unit veterancy i heard the Command and Conquer Generals pilot sounds
Gotta love their ejection seat benefits... unless they got shot down above water or some inaccessible area.
i knew i remembered seeing a rancor eat someone, glad to know i'm not insane
6:20 UNIT VETERANCY, coming soon(tm) to EAW:X...
EDIT: 7:01 GET HYPE
I was about to ask if unit veterancy was now possible to some limited capacity and you answered it in the video, I look forward to seeing what you folks decide to do with that, veterancy tends to be a pretty cool mechanic in other RTS games, and I could even see it being used to represent a character's growth as a commander or warrior within a campaign, like for example Luke Skywalker in Imperial Reign developing further as a force hero, or Revan and their companions actually leveling up to an extent in Revan's Revenge, as if they really were characters in an RPG.
So excited for the new doors this opens for you and the team!
Round of applause for Petroglyph for sure.
I guess that explains why all my save files are now gone
You can revert to an older version on steam by going to the 32-bit branch under preferences
@@joelmcfly5172yeah I know just didn't except it is all but it is good to see that my favorite star wars game is still being worked
I'm sorry everyone, as my finger reached the like button I saw the number go from 668 straight to 670. The tragedy.
God bless efforts against crassness!
So crazy how these old games still get official love.
For those trying out the new patch. Previously under 32 bit mode many need to run compatibility mode, limiting the cpu and gpu. TURN Compatibility Off. Let your computer run normally, let the game run normally. If you are experiencing stuttering or lag issues this will likely help....alot. Pass on what you have learned. 😊
They also patched that unlimited jetpack glitch from boba Fett and the phase two dark Troopers.
64 bit EAW. I peed a little.
Yes!! Unit vet status is gonna be killer if it doesn't kill the engine!
I hope this helps with Remake's stability
Hey Corey I had an idea for how to get the Starhawk to be able to damage ships using its tractor beam, not sure if you’ve tried it already but an ability like the SPAT beam from the ship ‘The Liberation’ from the mod ‘Awakening of the rebellion’ but with shield piercing effect. Not sure if that would actually work but had that thought today and thought I should share it.
That's just the superlaser ability or the proton beam, which isn't really something we want to use for it.
holy shit. Mods are gonna get even bigger.
Now that a lot of these galatic conquest issues have been fixed, is there any possibility that itll become supported with fotr or TR
Aside from the potential desync improvements for MP generally, nothing has changed with multiplayer GC.
@@CoreyLoses damn 😔
We need Empire at War 2!
A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.
ANOTHER EaW update? Aw yeeeeah! Thank you to the Petroglyph dev teams!
And here I thought the question about 64 bit by the devs in the stream chat a while ago was a joke
Will this mean that Thrawns Revenge MP GC might be more possible?
Stability may be slightly better, but the other underlying difficulties are still there.
@@CoreyLoses we shall wait another 5 years for the next Update then
A shame saves aren't compatible. Its a good thing i only just started aotr. Although i did lose my last stand against the empire on myrkr. Literally only had a tauntaun and a speeder left.
You can revert to the 32 bit version: ua-cam.com/video/DIp-2E28yoQ/v-deo.htmlsi=J_pi36UJNHC_JM_p
64-bit can't access "more memory," it can access "near unlimited memory."
this sounds really fuckin good!!
I wonder if the new Awakening of the Rebellion update will be delayed in order to integrate some of these changes.
Hi Corey, I love your work. Can I ask you to try unit veterancy? This is something I really wanted to see in SWEAW.
This update is fantastic! However, I think I missed something because...where is the updated map editor? The editor I had is broken and I can't find a download to a new 64bit version anywhere...
I'm not sure if it's been updated on the site yet, but it should be on PG's mod tools page soon
Same here. In the PG mod tools it does show in the top " 11/20/2023".
Oh, I'm def gonna check this one out. Can anyone recommend a favorite campaign mod for my first run in a long time?
Petroglyph pulling another epic move.
Darn, I liked ghost blasters.
Finally!
We can load a full size death star in the game 😂
petroglyph is wild for supporting such an old game just because. That's dedication right there.
RIP ISD Allecto and it's 89 siblings 2006 - 2023
How do I get it to where only 1 small ship is there to start a space battle? I want to be able to jump my big ships closer instead of watching them slowly traverse across the map. Anyone who can help will save me
Zoom in on your fleet and draw the small ship into the small square on the top left. Requires forces of corruption though
As the other person said you just need to move a single unit in to the square in to top left corner of the fleet viewer screen when zoomed in to the planet. It's basically just picking one specific ship or ground unit that will go in first, allowing you to pick which order the rest of your forces arrive in.
To add to what other people have said. I don't know how this works out for Vanilla, but put corvettes in your pathfinder slot and not a larger ship even if you'd want to. Ships over corvette size do not open up full map visibility.
Honestly getting an upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit is *huge*, it’s not flipping a switch but a lot of work!
Hard to not see this as a labour of love and I’m very happy that Petroglyph supported it!
I hope I can try out their next RTS game when it comes out
even gods seem to lose interest in their religions and stop pushing out updates, but this company keeps a eye on its creations 🙂
does that mean that MP GC can be played with mods and without synchronization errors?
as long as the sequel is not apart of Disney canon. I am all for it
Most mods dont even work anymore 32bit ftw
I have a self-centered, arrogant feeling that this is because of me. Had a conversation in the steam forums about a 64 bit update, where a user named Petroglyph Gaming responded saying 'we hear you' and I expressed doubt about it, calling them out as 'not the actual dev team because they didn't have the tag.'
Now you can try saying "I still don't believe you, make game support multiple CPU cores and then I will believe"
Question for you! After I updated I can no longer launch the game from steam. I can launch it from my files, but if I do that I can not access fall of the republic, it just crashes instead. Any idea why I can’t launch with this new update?
Will the game run on a Core I5 laptop with an integrated graphics card?
will the mods needs some kind of update to take advantage of the 64bit upgrade?
As glad as I am for this- they coulda waited like one more week. I was 85% done with a Republic at War play through man 😭 And all my save files just got wiped
We owe petroglyph a really nice Christmas gift for doing this. Twenty years later and they're helping the community out. Much appreciated.
WHAT EMPIRE AT WAR GOT AN UPDATE???!!?!
Petroglyph really are MVPs!
Colossal w for everyone all around
Do this update mean you will make more Factions available in Fall of the Republic? Do you think this will bring an uptick in Factions across the entire modbase? With the game going into 64 bit will this make modeling assets harder? With the increase in textures will lower or less capable computers be able to still run the game reasonable fast? Some questions that popped up while watching this amazing video.
This has to be one of the oldest games that is still getting patched, especially considering that it wasn't an open source game
I honestly thought that some mod got updated, thanks for breaking down the patch! Can't wait for the modders to start making some more crazy stuff.
Ooh, what about maintaining a damage profile for capital ships and SSDs, ships over a certain size, to represent repairs on larger vessels taking longer, perhaps repairing faster for fleets at shipyards. Impractical for all ships/units but maintaining it for larger ships makes lore and game sense. If you ravaged the hardpoints on an SSD, only to lose the battle, then face it again at full HP the next fight? Doesn't seem right to me.
They already have it in game for Executors/Executor heroes at the least for Thrawn's Revenge.
Ah been a long time, didn't know!@@Meravokas
Now the game won’t suicide itself when I run mods?!??
This game deserves a sequel
5:10 Those look like zombie units, but I may just be high... but what if?
oh I've been waiting for the name thing for a long time, its so nice to have some variety there
Wish other Star Wars/LucasArts games still got updated like this. So many great games slowly becoming unplayable.
I'm stunned this got an update. Now I want to play the game again. I suppose mods are what allow folks to play missions with prequel ships? Or was that added to the game and I'm just unaware?
Amazing that Empire at War still gets support from the Developers while most AAA companies can barely care to push out updates after the first month these days.
If you’re looking for performance improvement, DXVK is usually the best go for DX9 games
Thanks, Petroglyph! I'll definitely pick up 9-bit Armies!
Amazing! They still don't give up on this game. I just wish they made a new one with all the technology available these days. Just imagine the graphics, the mechanics etc.
Thank you Petroglyph for keeping not only one of my favourite games but part of my childhood alive.
Thank you Corey for letting the community know but also thank you to the community, both modders and players.
i hope one day, Petroglyph can get the rights to make a sequel
Such a treat, seeing Petroglyph giving us another patch. This is always such a nice change to see, a good example of developers carrying about their community and it's mods. I wish more would take this route instead of all the scandals lately in this industry.
Amazing news. Great to see, they are still caring.
if you do a community match 3x player, could u do Revans Revenge :)
Gonna buy their new game just to show them appreciation for upkeeping this beauty.
YESSSS Let's go
Where are the official patch notes. We all want a sequel but do we really want Disney doing it? I still want another galactic battle grounds as well
Wow, this sounds great
Regarding the map editor being patched to 64 bit for Steam users, how do you currently extract the map previews? I know there was a map preview extractor provided by Petroglyph, but it seems to be 32 bit and I can’t find an update for it anywhere. Because of this, the extractor doesn’t recognize the map previews, even after I select the “generate map preview” in the editor. Any tips for this?
Edit: I managed to find a temporary fix, but it involves taking a screenshot, and converting it to a .dds image. This; however, leaves the yellow border line around the map visible (a small detail, but a distracting one).
I can’t fathom why they wouldn’t make another, it would sell like hotcakes!
They do want to. But they have to get the greenlight from Disney, and Disney just now is allowing different major game studios outside of EA to work with the IP.
I would like to fight you on Empire At War Corley Loses
man petroglyph are awesome, so much passion! I hope they can get the go ahead for a sequal some day.
That 20 year old games even compile today is amazing. Much more impressive is that they even compile for different architectures! Well done Engineering...
half life anniversary update and now EaW? what a great thanksgiving present!
YOOOO ITS THE DUDE FROM THAT MAP I LOVE. (Love your work man, keep it up and we love you and all the work you and your team does for the game)
Wow!! I used to play EaW & FoC, but something happened! The SWAP file somehow became "corrupted"!? & I'm not a modder (if that's how you spell it)!
I'd just love to be able to play it again!!
PLEASE, Empire at War 2, bigger battles, bigger campaign, more Star Wars, my son, I, he needs this, I need this.
