My first job 50 years ago was transferring auto titles in Texas. Out-of-state vehicle purchases and people relocating to Texas were a constant headache, especially regarding taxes. Bottom line: don't trust the dealer, EVER! Talk to your state's DMV first and make sure you know what needs to happen to avoid unnecessary expense and frustration.
My husband said that you guys should look into claiming out of state taxes paid on your 2022 tax return. You may be able to recoup some of the money that way. Hope that helps!
I havent even watched the video yet, but GIRL, you are rocking that pixie hair and i love it on you. Honestly better than when it was long, your beauty just shines instead of being hidden.
Ugh - what a rough go! I love your transparency - you didn't have to tell us about this, but you did. Moreover, you did it with the heart to warn others by your experience. One of the many things I love about you two! In my life, I call things like this paying tuition at the school of life. Thanks for helping the rest of us!!
Wow that was a nasty move by that car dealership. An expensive lesson learned. Enjoy your RV you’ve earned it. Thanks for sharing that I’m sure most people would never know about this sneaky and seemingly unethical money grab.
I bought my 2022 Winnebago Travato KL online at NIRVC. I live in Dallas and the NIRVC here didn't have the van here, it was in Las Vegas. I flew there to buy it and the staff there were great. They handled everything with my Credit Union here in Texas and the paperwork went smoothly. When I registered the van here in Dallas I actually got over a $1200 refund from the State because the tax was overpaid. Needless to say, NIRVC did a great job dealing with this out of state customer.
I bought every one of my new motorhomes out of state. I never paid sales tax. 4 motorhomes 1999, 2004, 2007, 2020 all different Rv dealers. I took the paperwork back . Paid sales tax and title in my home state. The dealer misinformed you, you should go after that crooked dealer. La Mesa is crooked. I would get a lawyer after La Mesa. I also bought 7 brand new cars that same way. The dealers never screwed me. Every Rv dealer knows how to sell an RV to someone out of state.
Same thing happened to my husband and myself, but in Kentucky. We ended up paying the taxes in our state. Then we filed a case with the Better Business Bureau online. We submitted all of our documents from the sale and the documents for where we paid our taxes in our state. The Better Business Bureau contacted the dealership. Two weeks later we received a certified check for the amount that we had to pay for our taxes in our state from the dealership. The Better Business Bureau remove the report. It takes a little time but it’s worth it to file a report with a Better Business Bureau. It’s a faster process if you submit all your paperwork out front and your receipts. It shouldn’t take more than one month to complete your case. Just thought I’d share this information with you.
I am sorry that you went through all that. My husband bought me a Suburu Crosstreck 5 years ago. We went to the Dealership. Picked out the car we wanted. They took us to the finance office. Showed us what was what. We made an apt to come back the next day to get the car. We went to our bank and got a cashiers check to pay for vehicle. Got to the finance department and they proceeded to have us sign a bunch of paperwork. I looked at my husband and said, " do they know that we have a cachiers check right now to buy this? The finance guy wanted us to finance the car. We said no. We will NOT have any bills ever. We were getting up to leave at that point ( after an hour ) of dealing with them. Finally I said , either you want this cashier's check or you don't and will go to the other dealership? which is it? Well after awhile, they took the check. Yeah, I feel your pain. :(
So sorry about what happened! I have to say Alisa, I LOVE your short hair now that it’s coming in. Frankly I loved it when you first had to cut it but now, you look fantastic!
I knew you were in Oceanside! I recognized exactly where you were immediately! That's my beach! I walked that beach for years! I'm in Florida now but I was there for 28 years. Sorry, you went thru all that!
Wow I’m so sorry you had this issue. I bought mine in Ohio and paid Ohio tax but the dealership sent me a package that had a document from Ohio showing the amount of tax I paid. When I went to register in California, I gave them all my paperwork and I just paid the difference between the tax in Ohio and the tax in California. I didn’t have a trade in though. What a mess for you!
We had a similar experience and we found out we could get a PO Box in the state that we had purchased it in and became a state resident at that time so we did not have to pay the sales tax. We came back to our state because we had it registered to our other state home PO Box.
Welcome to California, again! I hope you have a great time here. As for your RV...so sorry to hear what you went through. I had heard many years ago to never buy a car out of state. Now I know why. Thank you for sharing your story.
Oh, wow! What a tough situation. Glad you were able to get everything resolved to a lesser rate even though you shouldn't have had to at all. Thanks for the heads up. Great information to know. Thanks for sharing.
I feel your pain. I live just outside New Orleans and bought my new vehicle at a New Orleans East dealership 10 days before Katrina. We evacuated to Tennessee, our house went underwater as well as the dealership. After a month in Tennessee, brought my car to dealership in Memphis for minor issues. They had it for several days and each time I called I was getting the run- around about when it would be ready. Finally the sales manager told me the company had no record of me buying the car!!
Long story short after many temp tags in Tennessee and Louisiana, I ended up paying another sales tax to register the car in Mississippi (don't ask) then finally a year and a half later once we were back in my house, my Louisiana license plate arrived in the mail!!
Thanks so much guys. So sorry you went through this. But SUPER GREAT of you WARNING ⚠️ Others!!! We know you bounced back even HIGHER for this!!!! BlessU
la Mesa rv did you dirty and they created the problem so they should of paid the taxes. I bought all three of my rvs in other states and no problem. people shouldn't buy from la Mesa rv because there not a honest business. sorry for your inconvenience and tanksvfir sharing info. to many rv dealers are scammers
Thank Y'all so much for sharing your story! We plan on trading ours in for a smaller rig when we retire. I will ABSOLUTLY remember your story!! Being from Louisiana and currently living in Texas, I know how different things can be when dealing with other states!
This happened to us…bought a car in Texas. Paid Texas sales tax. Live in a different state, so, I contacted Texas comptroller’s office and they were gracious. They explained what forms I needed to get the difference back. The dealership, high end and up their own flowery make and model, didn’t do squat for us.
I admire you for not slamming them, but it sounds like the dealership in Texas was outstanding and the one in Arizona....to put it bluntly......mucked up.
That is pretty bad what you guys went thru. We live in CA but bought our 5th wheel in Oregon. Everything worked out the way your 1st RV went, I dont understand why La Mesa would register in AZ knowing you live in Louisiana? We enjoy all your videos!
Glad you got it sorted out, van life is amazing but comes with so many unforeseen challenges in addition to the known ones. Definitely not an easy lifestyle or purchase but so worth it! Beautiful van!
Sorry for what you had been through for a RV. Thank you for sharing the experiences. I did buy a van out of state that agency was in Texas. It looked like the auto agents in Texas knew the procedure better than other states. I had bought the van by bidding on Ebay and I won it. It was 18 years ago. I did not know any procedure on it. We paid several hundred dollars to fly over to state Texas, tried a ride, was satisfied, paid with cashier check, then drove back to Ca. in two days. I paid state tax in CA then. Even now I did not know there was different laws until watched your video. Thank you for sharing 🙃
Tha k you so much for your information. We are going to purchase a Ram solis in 2023 and probably out of state. Thank you for helping and now I know…..no title execute state we live in. Forever grateful.
Sorry to hear! Thank you for the buyer beware disclosure! I’m glad that while you shouldn’t have to pay, you did pay less than the original nightmare of 5K. Take care folks 😊
Oh my goodness... What a mess. Thanks for the lesson... On a positive note, our son just became a US Marine there at Camp Pendleton yesterday. #louisianagirlinamissouriworld
Awesome place , was a kid and lived on Camp Penalton , USMC station for three years ! Half mile from the ocean , lol , it’s where I learned how to skip classes and - oops school (on bad days ) beautiful place !!
As a Military family, we had this problem. Florida was our home of record. In Florida if your vehicle was a yr old you didn’t have to pay taxes again. So if the dealership wouldn’t pay the Florida tax, we could wait a yr and then do the registration then. So you maybe could have used the Az registration for a yr and then do a Louisiana registration
I sort of ran into the same thing...not an RV. I found out the taxes are collected from that state. The $ is then transferred to your home state...but this was after 4mo of back and forth. That may be the way the dealership operates...but doesn't mean it's legal. Check with the vehicle state DMV and state consumer protection dept. They can get some serious uh stuff done or file charges etc on your behalf. The state business start answering and calling back quick when that dept gets involved.
You all should do a video on the pros and cons of the Gemini vs Winnebago. It would be interesting to hear how they compare and what you preferred about each one.
Timely video as I'm currently looking to upgrade my Roadtrek into something newer. Originally purchased from a dealer in Ohio back in 2014 and they did not charge me the state taxes as I was registering in MN where I paid the tax. Seemed to work out just fine but a good reminder to pay attention up front.
Also make sure if you buy used out of state that the title can be transferred to your state. We purchased our RV in Alabama and the title had the mileage exempt. Unfortunately Florida would not accept the title with mileage exempt. The seller helped us get Alabama to reissue the title without the exemption, but it took a couple of months.
mmmm, just wondering if you could have plates bought in Texas so you would not have to pay additional taxes. Any way, I have a 2023 Thor sequence, which is very similar to your van except have battery generator . looking forward so mods you might do.
IMHO - someone at the dealership organization knows about this and you probably NOT the first to get screwed. That is really bad customer service and IMHO it appears deliberate. Did you consider filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau or maybe small claims court?
We almost bought a new car over state lines about 100 miles from where we live. I will definitely be asking a lot of questions if we consider that in the future.
What an expensive lesson to learn!! Sorry you had to go through all that mess. Caveat Emptor (Let the Buyer Beware). I remember this saying in a high school business class
Welcome to California. You guys are at the right beach. Visit Carlsbad beaches too there beautiful. Sorry to hear about your fiasco. Glad it's all over. If you head to San Diego visit " old town " they have the best Mexican restaurants.
We bought an RV in Alabama over the border of Florida where we live. Our dealer did not charge us sales tax until we took it to Florida DMV to do the title work. So sorry this happened to you.
We had a similar experience, but an amazing employee at our local DMV went above and beyond, which is often unheard of at the DMV... hahaha... but she reached out via email to the DMV in the county where the initial taxes were paid to incorrectly by the dealership and petitioned that the taxes be transferred to the correct county where we live. Don't know if reaching out to the DMV in Arizona is an option or worth the time to you, but... 🤷♀️ Maybe you'll have the luck I did finding a DMV employee that goes above and beyond to help you out!?!?! 😃
That's terrible! I bought my motorhome in Montana, but we live in Oregon. I had no issues except for the out of state purchase fee that I had to pay Oregon. What?? Both Oregon and Montana have not sales tax. but sneaky Oregon got me with the stupid fee. 😭
Wow!! I’m so sorry that happened to you guys!!! BUT… thank you so much for the info! My hubby and I are looking for or first arc/van to start traveling in.
Wow!! So sorry about what you are going through, it is a really hard lesson for you guys and a lesson to learn from, why can't you go and have a professional tax legal consultant look at the situation and double-check perhaps one of the people in both offices is wrong and failed to interpret the tax laws of the state in questions correctly, have they show you the state statue of the requirement of that law? perhaps they goofed up thinking that was correct when it is not. it happens all the time with agencies working with the public.
I live in AZ and have been told by many RVers, never buy from La Mesa RV. If they were a reputable company they would have at least paid half the registration fee if not all.. They knew you were out of town people and the RV you traded in I assume was also registered in Louisiana. Best advise is NEVER TRUST A DEALER, NEVER!!!
I'm so sorry this happened to you guys, but thankfully with your dedication and hard legwork you were able to see it substantially reduced. This also something people need to watch with buying from dealers on sites like ebay. Thankfully, I had a dealer that explained the entire process to me and what I needed to do in order to have my new vehicle registered and titled in my states of WV before taking possession of it. It definitely varies from state to state. Many blessings and safe travels.
we were at the Albuquerque balloon festival and almost traded in our 2019 Thor Gemini for another RV. La Mesa was the dealer at the show. We will be checking that issue if we decide to trade for another RV.
Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I can only imagine how frustrating this was. Glad it went down to 1.2K from 5K..... Biiiig difference. I know, I know shoulda been zero to begin with! No La Mesa whatever for me ever.....!
Yep daughter had the same problem in the air force, came back from Hawaii, bought a jeep in California in order to come visit us in Arkansas and then planned on getting registration in next duty station in Arizona! Boy was that a problem...same thing...what a headache! But it was the license/registration that was the problem, they weren't out any money. They just let the vehicle have registration/tags for California, next year they registered in Arizona where they live. I guess armed forces people are used to this problem.
That means we are not purchasing an RV in Arizona because they only know to register vehicle in their state. They need to learn how to register for other states too and if it’s an issue just inform customer straight up so there’s less problem for the customer.
Good to know but they should of told you guys that's the salesman fault but I'm glad you got it taken care of it love the RV we are looking to getting a toy hauler for our sxs so we will keep this in mind
That's crazy. I moved several times in my career and when I registered my car in a new state, they generally did not make me pay taxes if I could show I paid them in another state for that car when I bought it. I think once I may have paid the difference from a state that had a lower rate at purchase.
We are moving to Arizona in April and have been looking at RVs. We will avoid La Mesa RV like the plague.
Yes, I was just going to say, that, you may be entitled to a refund on out of state taxes.
Exactly hope this helps.
I smell a rat here , I won’t be buying from this dealer, you have helped a lot of others avoid this problem, THANK YOU
The rat is AZ has Hobbs D and Louisiana has a R. That's the difference
I havent even watched the video yet, but GIRL, you are rocking that pixie hair and i love it on you. Honestly better than when it was long, your beauty just shines instead of being hidden.
Awe thank you 😊
Yes I agree the pixie is so cute and it makes your eyes pop!!
Yes!, I love her short hair so much better! It suits her perfectly.

One of the many things I love about you two! In my life, I call things like this paying tuition at the school of life. Thanks for helping the rest of us!!
Thanks for this! It was a very frustrating and expensive situation.
How can the dealer register you RV without an address in that state
Something very fishy
Wow that was a nasty move by that car dealership. An expensive lesson learned. Enjoy your RV you’ve earned it. Thanks for sharing that I’m sure most people would never know about this sneaky and seemingly unethical money grab.
We sure didn’t know and wish we did!
I had heard La Mesa RV were a bunch of sheisters but now you confirmed it for me. Thanks!
Be very very very very careful dealing with La Mesa RV.

Oh you are in our state!! Come to Camarillo in Ventura county. We would love to take you out for lunch or dinner in our area !!!
So sorry about what happened! I have to say Alisa, I LOVE your short hair now that it’s coming in. Frankly I loved it when you first had to cut it but now, you look fantastic!
Sorry you all had to go through that, but I appreciate you all telling us as it's great information to know.

I've come across MANY reviews on LaMesa with similar issues. Apparently price & sale is smooth and easy, it's the after effect that they suck at.
Welcome to California, again! I hope you have a great time here. As for your RV...so sorry to hear what you went through. I had heard many years ago to never buy a car out of state. Now I know why. Thank you for sharing your story.
Wow! That really sucks! But thanks for the video. Hopefully, you help the few people avoid the same problem.
I am glad things worked out better for you. It’s a shame people are not more upfront in sales.
Oh, wow! What a tough situation. Glad you were able to get everything resolved to a lesser rate even though you shouldn't have had to at all. Thanks for the heads up. Great information to know. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much guys. So sorry you went through this. But SUPER GREAT of you WARNING ⚠️ Others!!! We know you bounced back even HIGHER for this!!!! BlessU
Thanks for the heads up. I’ve actually looked at RVs at La Mesa RV site. I’m from out of state; no RV from La Mesa for me.
La ‘Mess’ RV! Appreciate your honesty. We almost just made the same mistake
la Mesa rv did you dirty and they created the problem so they should of paid the taxes. I bought all three of my rvs in other states and no problem. people shouldn't buy from la Mesa rv because there not a honest business. sorry for your inconvenience and tanksvfir sharing info. to many rv dealers are scammers

REAL talk ... You have HELPED many !!
👍👍
We live in California, and bought in Utah, and had a very good experience. Nothing like your experience.
Enjoy the San Diego area.
Glad you got it sorted out, van life is amazing but comes with so many unforeseen challenges in addition to the known ones. Definitely not an easy lifestyle or purchase but so worth it! Beautiful van!
Thank you for giving this information.
I like your video because you show us almost everything. Nothing hidden is very important for me
🌺THANK YOU
FOR THIS IMPORTANT

That was terrible! I am so sorry that happened, thank you for sharing, you may very well have saved someone else thousands of dollars!
Yep, that’s why we decided to make this video so it doesn’t happen to someone else!
@@EECCTravels Alissa, you and Jason are the real deal….we appreciate your content and happy to see all your adventures!
Sorry for what you had been through for a RV. Thank you for sharing the experiences. I did buy a van out of state that agency was in Texas. Thanks for sharing, great info. For the company that sold you the Van, was just a sale to them. They knew what was going to happen.
There is a rv channel vancaskeys that had trouble with la Mesa too.
Tha k you so much for your information. We are going to purchase a Ram solis in 2023 and probably out of state. Thank you for helping and now I know…..no title execute state we live in. Forever grateful.
This is why we made this video! Glad to help!!
Did you talk to the Attorney General's Office in either LA or AZ? They should have a consumer protection department.
In Ga. It's an Ad Valorem tax on registering out of state vehicles. We call it the Georgia FU tax.
Wow!! Thank you for the information!! Very helpful!!! I’m thinking of trading my 5th wheel for your same van. TAXES are insane!!
very good information. Thank you
Sorry to hear! Thank you for the buyer beware disclosure! I’m glad that while you shouldn’t have to pay, you did pay less than the original nightmare of 5K. Take care folks 😊
Ugh! We bought our RV in LA and live in TX and they just sent us a check because we paid too much in taxes!
Thank you for the heads up. Sorry that happy to you!
Oh my goodness... What a mess. Thanks for the lesson... On a positive note, our son just became a US Marine there at Camp Pendleton yesterday. #louisianagirlinamissouriworld
Sorry that you had to have this hassle plus paying sales tax again. Welcome back to California and San Diego County.
Same thing happened to us on a Range Rover from AZ back to Texas! They just flat don’t know what to do! $3500 boo boo
I’m watching. I live in Alexandria also. My Honda is registered in Texas. They want $1500 in taxes to change over to Louisiana. I feel your pain.
Now that I’ve finished watching there is a problem if DMV are not giving consistent information across the board. Alexandria dmv needs to be reported

Sad you had to spend but Thankyou with sharing and reminding all of us! 👍👍
I love living here in the UK. None of that rubbish here. Come on over and stay 😊
So sorry. Love your help and educating. My favorite thing watching you all is your variety ❤️
Very very important lessons learned video. Awesome!

Thank you
I like the energy
What an expensive lesson to learn!! Sorry you had to go through all that mess. Caveat Emptor (Let the Buyer Beware). I remember this saying in a high school business class

Sorry to hear that. Thanks for sharing.
Wow!! So sorry about what you are going through, it is a really hard lesson for you guys and a lesson to learn from, why can't you go and have a professional tax legal consultant look at the situation and double-check perhaps one of the people in both offices is wrong and failed to interpret the tax laws of the state in questions correctly,
have they show you the state statue of the requirement of that law? perhaps they goofed up thinking that was correct when it is not. it happens all the time with agencies working with the public.
We live in Harahan, LA, it was great viewing your video
Sorry to hear that you two had to deal with that headache.
we were at the Albuquerque balloon festival and almost traded in our 2019 Thor Gemini for another RV. La Mesa was the dealer at the show. We will be checking that issue if we decide to trade for another RV.
The dealership was fine in the sales side. Ut were no help with this issue. Definitely ask if they will title it in that state.
Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I can only imagine how frustrating this was. Glad it went down to 1.2K from 5K..... Biiiig difference. I know, I know shoulda been zero to begin with! No La Mesa whatever for me ever.....!
OmG thats awful. Can imagine your shock at the price tag on those Taxes 🤦♀️😱
What a Beautiful view you have just Now ❤
Thanks for the info!🙏👏👏👏
Not only you guys but all the Nomads who go to Quartzite and Lake Havasu for the winter who buy RVs in AZ that live elsewhere wow!
Great information. I'll just keep buying vehicles in the state I live in.
