This works! You definitely have to pick just the right shape. Those images with multiple colors have multiple pieces.
I'm so profoundly grateful you made this tutorial. I was going crazy trying to figure out how to customize a frame to make it the exact size I needed. I never thought it was possible to make a frame! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I watch this vid everytime I need a custom frame, it is by far the easiest method I have come across. I did just have a panic when the element I was using actually split into 2 parts when I used Word. I tried it again with just PowerPoint and it solved my issue. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this! I tried to create a PDF from my design program skipping the WORD process and it didn't work. After following your steps exactly, it then worked. I searched for days on how to do this so I truly appreciate this tutorial.
Thank you very much! I was looking for something like this for a long time. Simple and fast.
Thank you so much for sharing this and doing it in a way that's so simple to understand!
Super loving this DIY Frame tutorial you did, you are awesome! Thank you!~
Exactly what I was looking for! Thank you!
Can’t wait to give this a try!
Thank you so much for uploading this tutorial, it is very helpful, I was driving me crazy thinking in how to customize my elements, I really really thank you!
So helpful! Exactly what I needed using tools I have access to. Thanks so much
This is what I've been looking for. Thank you!!
Loving this sweet hack!
Very cool technique here. Thanks for sharing that with us.
Oh my goodness. This tutorial has been invaluable. Really easy to follow along and I've now created a frame of my logo that I will be using probably forever. I can't thank you enough. I've tried other tutorials I've found and they have NOTHING on this one.
Im so confused. You 1) Dont show what format to save the file in, but in your file manager it looks like an ADOBE PDF? But then you cannot bring adobe PDF into Word... can you clarify please
This is crazy... very useful and valuable tutorial!
This is freaking amazing, thank you
Great tutorial! Thank you.
Thank you!!!! That was really helpful!
Wow!!!! Thanks for the pro tip!!!
This is a wonderful video, thank you so much!

Thank you so much for your tutorial! I just knew about this after years of using canva 😭
you saved my life! Love you
Brilliant. Thank you
Thank you so much. This really helped me :)
OH MY GOSH THANK YOU! You saved my sanity today!
very beautiful instruction
Wonderful Thank you. !
Thank you for your amazing Canva tutorials! Is there a way to make a custom shape frame for only part of the image? I would like to make a frame to showcase envelope liners while keeping the rest of the envelope as is. I would love to see a video on this if you have one or make one!
Great job! 👍🙏🙏
Oh my god. Thank you so much.!! It is useful to me
Thank you very much!
Thank for sharing 😍
beautifull work
Ahhh, thank you so much, this is exactly what I needed. I love, love, love using canva, but I don't really understand some of the restrictions it has. Like why can I resize a grid all I want, but not a frame. The frame can only be dragged by the corner. Thank you!!
Awesome video!!
Hi, wonderfull tutorial, but I still have a question. I surely hope you can give some advice. But what if you want to make a "frame", not consisting of a special shape, but with gradients and transparency. As you can find them in the library, but I would like to make my own. Kind regards
It is amazing tutorial. Thank you!!!!!!!
Thank you🤗
Txcellent! Thank you!
great tutorial
Thank you so much
Magic!
thank you for sharing this
Wow awesome . Best channel.
Awesome 👍👍❤️
Thank you. May I know name of sound effect in between scenes (like a swoosh)?
Thank you so much very helpful my question is if I want to make different pictures in one frame how can I do that
Great video! Is there a way to save and share frames we've created?
this is great! my PDF import is saying picture format not shape format thought an I don't have the same options in word- has anyone seen this and know of a fix?
This is the easiest so far without using too many apps except for CANVA and MS applications. Now I have to figure out how to do frame over frame if you can imagine what I mean 😂
Thank you
Cool, toda raba. Also, I did it via Figma
Thank youu
Thank you! Does anyone know if there is a way to do this in Chrome documents? Or do you have to have Microsoft word? Thank you!!
Will the same work if i use a custom shape (not a canva image) uploaded in png?
Please can this b done on pages? i don't have Microsoft word
Very helpful but I can enable editing on word document it says I have to buy subscription is there anyway to get around this
do you know of a way to do this with an existing logo or image that wasn't created in canva originally?
I appreciate your informative video, it was very instructive. I've viewed this and several other guides on the topic. In response, I've submitted a feature request to Canva as I believe the process could be considerably streamlined. Here are the improvements I proposed:
- Canva should implement an automatic file export and import function, eliminating the need for users to manually transfer files over the internet.
- Canva should offer an automatic conversion feature for black colors into custom frame shapes.
There's a wealth of information on tasks such as creating custom frame shapes. Ideally, such common functions should be incorporated directly into Canva's features. It's inefficient for users to have to download and then immediately upload files just for the sake of using Canva for subsequent steps.
I wanted to add a comment...I tried uploading the pdf and it did not work for me, but I uploaded a .docx and it worked like a charm! Thanks again.
I tried word even doesnot work
great!
Is there another program you can use other than word? I have a Mac and don’t have Word.
very helpful tutorial, the only thing that goes so fast that i cannot make out what you are doing is when you save the 1st image of the cherry to a file, you say pdf but it looks like you save it as a word document, when i go back and try to bring mine into canva, after i select create a design the option it gives me is upload file, not upload PDF, then it will not delete just the inside of each piece, it deletes the whole section? any suggestions
היי הדס, תודה על ההדרכה הנפלאה! האם ניתן גם למתוח צורה ? למשל למתוח טרפז לפרופורציות אחרות שמשנות את זויות הטרפז בפינות?
Hello! what do i do to use in svg for cricut? i want to use it in layers, i try saving it in svg but in the program i get all black :( i hope you can help me, thank you!
I have been trying to make frames for weeks and most of the "silhouette" black images I choose, once I put them in word they are more than one piece and I cannot figure out how to make the pieces all one.
Hi. I have tried to do this several times and I always pic elements that are all one color or all black, but after I put in word and then back in Canva they have different sections to them. How can I find elements without different sections? I thought if they all lblack then they would all be one section.
It doesn't work. Something is missing from the process. The "picture fill" simply fills the background, not the main part of the icon/design/cherry.
I had the same issue. Ensure the background is white and the image has colors.
I don't have Word. (Too expensive.) Is there any other software we can use to do this step? (I have Affinity Designer, not sure if that would work.)
Thanks for creating such a simple tutorial.
I am trying to create a frame from word - essentially so that I can drop in a single image & have it appear through all of the letters. When I upload the PDF (created in ppt) it brings in each letter as a separate frame and I then have to place my image in each letter. Do you know if there is a way around this?
I had the same question
This is a good tutorial but may i ask what version of Word you are using? I was not able to do this in my version.
Same! My version & also tried the online version and neither will work
Is there another software I can use instead of Word? It was asked a few times but never answered.
Here's a little tip you want to make an interesting Canva video. Why don't you do canva app for desktop vs regular web login. I'm seeing a huge difference when it comes to video lag which can be a big problem on canvas...but I will have to finally do it myself
When I get to the part of the shape fill by inserting a picture in Word, it adds the picture to the background. It doesn’t fill the image
Same, hopefully she can address this.
Mine did this before if I was using something tbat was just an outline. Didn’t have a filled in center. You need to have one solid image I believe
Thank you for sharing! A couple of questions: First, can this be done in Google Docs if you don't have Word? Second, how would you do this if you want a border? For instance, if I wanted to create the type of frame like you did, where you drag and drop an image into the shape, but I want to do it with a file of a wooden frame and a blank inside? Can I just make that blank inside the area where the dragged and dropped image goes?
I would like to know if it can be done with Google Docs too! I don't have access to any version of word and so far I've not been able to get it to work with Docs.
Thank you this is a great hack. I was looking for how I could make my own frames. Are you able to download it as a frame and then re upload it to Canva as frame, to reuse as and when you need that frame or do you need to do this each time? If you can what format would you save it as? An SVG file? Thanks 😊
Unfortunately you can't upload it to the elements tab but you can save them individually to the Likes tab or open a new folder for this. It's a bit time consuming , but do it once and it's there forever. Hope that helps 🙏
Thank you. Great work.
I used a solid shape but it still split into 2 pieces once filled in word
For the butterfly example, would you be able to somehow make multiple frames within that butterfly or is there no way to do that except manually try to fit frames inside of the image?
I would suggest using Procreate if possible!
If you have access to Procreate or a similar app,
- insert/paste your image (in this case, the butterfly)
- make a new layer above the image
- use a brush like “monoline” to outline the shape where you want the smaller images (so for you, the sections of the butterfly)
- use color-fill to fill the outline to make a solid shape
- insert the image you want to be in that shape and turn the image into a “clipping mask”. that way you can still move the image around and adjust/center then image.
OR
if you can find an SVG file (used for Cricut cut files) of a butterfly,
- insert/paste your image (in this case, the butterfly)
- turn the SVG file layer into a “reference” layer.
- make a new layer above the image
- then use the color-fill to fill the shapes
I hope this helps! I have been using Procreate for about 3 years now but I just started using Canva this past month. so I’ve been using these apps together to assist the other:)
If you’ve never used procreate, this is a helpful link for using “reference” layer!

Hello! Thank you for the great information. Question... I created a design by welding two shapes together then followed your process. It worked perfectly until I brought it into Canva. After I added elements, etc. Then I wanted to Edit the image and apply a shadow to it. When I did, it only worked on one piece of the two I welded together. What am I doing wrong? Thank you!
To add a shadow I suggest once you have the frame design done, download it as a png with transparent background, upload back to Canva and apply the shadow. Hope that helps.
Can this be done with ANYTHING besides Word?
Hello! I'm doing the steps, but 1:40 (Shape Format) does not appeat. Why is that? THANKS!
Are you on a Windows computer? On my Mac i had to add it to the ribbon
Hello, thank you for this brilliant tutorial. I am struggling with a picture that I imported into Canva, saved as pdf, neither word or Power point gives me the option to Fil shape. once it has opened the pdf. I have tried everything. What could the problem be please.
Hi there. I just watched a video after having the same issue. What I did was:
1. Saved it as an SVG from canva onto my files (I suggest saving it with a transparent background too to make step 5 a bit easier).
2. Opened a blank page in PowerPoint and deleted the default text boxes.
3. Inserted the picture from my files I had just saved.
4. Selected the photo and clicked on ‘convert to shape’ on the top left hand side of my screen.
5. When I first exported my picture out of canva I made sure to tick the ‘transparent’ box before exporting it as an SVG because I got a bit stuck here.
So if you export the picture with a transparent background then you can skip this. If not, the picture (on PowerPoint) should be separated into the main background and the actual image. You need to delete the background to essentially make it a png image. I was unable to do this at first hence why I went back into canva and saved it with a transparent background so I didn’t need to do this.
6. Clicked on the image and under ‘shape format’, clicked ‘shape fill’ and filled the image with a downloaded picture (any picture will do).
7. Then I exported the PowerPoint (On Mac: File, Save as) and I saved it as a PDF in the ‘file format’ selection. Then saved to my files.
8. Then I went back on canva and clicked ‘create a design’, then imported the PowerPoint PDF I just saved.
9. Opened the document, clicked on the image and clicked on ‘delete image’/delete button and the frame was created.
I hope this makes sense. I’ll link the video I learned this from in this comment.

Thank you so much! I was absolutely losing my mind over not having simple vertical rectangle frame _without_ rounded corners (in free Canva). I'm super super happy!🙏🏻❤
Btw, I use the Windows Desktop app and it doesn't have "import PDF" option. I did this in browser and then just copy-pasted the ready frame on my project on the Canva app😊
Oooooh all the custom frames I can design on PPT or Illustrator from now on! Yay!
hi! What do you mean by "did this in browser"? I m wrecking my brain trying too do this. In Word it does not open.
@@ioanadodanFAB Hi! I think my first reply was flagged as spam so here's trying again xD
By "in browser" I meant logging on to Canva from their website (w w w), and not using an app :) What are you struggling with spesificly?
Same
Same. I also just want some rectangle frames with square corners.
Don't have shape format in my Word
I tried clicking the upload pdf but nothing seems to be happening...
I don't have a "shape format" button at the top of my Word document.
It keeps splitting my image in half when I open the pdf in Canva. So it gives me 2 frames in one shape....
I see you downloaded the cherry as a .pdf, not a .png. I have Adobe Reader but still can't open the .pdf file in a word doc. Just get code. So frustrating! Wish I could get this to work.
This is a brilliant solution. Thanks
