  • Ukemi is the art of falling safely, and all Jūdo and Aikido trainees practice it first to avoid injuries. However, the Ukemi that we do in Asayama Ichiden Ryu is unique because you must fall safely with a katana on your waist.
    So today, Seki sensei, the 22nd headmaster of Kobudo Asayama Ichiden Ryu, which has 400 years of history, will explain how and why we perform the Ukemi in our Ryuha. This simple movement has incredible meanings, so please watch this video until the end. By the way, we have started a new online lesson on Sundays at 10:30 pm JST. Check out our Patreon page for more information!
    *The content of our videos is based on the teachings of Asayama Ichiden Ryu and personal studies/experience | There is no intention of denying other Ryuha styles, theories, and cultural aspects

    The Kobudo Asayama Ichiden Ryu, of which Seki Sensei is the 22nd headmaster, was one of the most popular Ryuha styles during the Edo period. In our golden age, we had over 7,000 students nationwide. Today, we only have 100 students. Our dream is to revive the golden age of Asayama Ichiden Ryu while Seki Sensei is still the headmaster. We want future generations to remember Seki Sensei as the legendary Sōké who brought back the glory of our Ryuha. Great video!
    There's a lot more to falling with a weapon and getting back up.
    So many civilians manage to impale themselves accidentally with pointy objects, when they fall.

    Excellent video! As a stick/staff fighter, the use of the hilt (kashira) as a fulcrum was a revelation to me. I could see how using the butt end of the staff as a fulcrum could surprise my opponent as I roll differently than expected. Many thanks for Seki-sensei's insights and tips.

    In Yanagi Hara Ryu (offshoot of Shidare Yanagi Ryu) we practiced ukemi by turning the katana perpendicular to our bodies. Picture rolling over the sword.

    I never thought I could learn so much from three minutes. Thank you. This was great. The roll is great. The stance down is great. Coming up is also great. But the best part was still when sensei showed what happens if you just try to roll far away from opponent without thinking much. My appreciation for this video is hard to put into words.

    Respectfully, your channel is one of the main reasons that I’m more motivated to pursue a good job and profession in life, so I can learn a martial art in classes. I’ve been massively unmotivated for the last three years, but each day that passes, I want to learn one of these martial arts moreso. I’m already working on procuring the funds for an iaito, and soon enough, a high end sword custom made for me. Much appreciation your way. A little motivation goes a long way.

    I think that your 'secret technique' can be instinctual.
    Once upon a time when I was young, with children, my baby was in my arms as I exited an office trailer. I tripped, fell/rolled down a half dozen stairs and rolled half way across the parking lot with the baby in my arms before coming to a rest. Baby never touched anything bu me and was completely unharmed. Observer said he never saw anything like that, before! ;)
    Oh, and I was uninjured also. All that rolling...
    The essence is the same with a baby or a sword.
    We are One with it, we protect it, make sure it is clean with no wants, feed it appropriately, take it out and play with it, learn together...
    After both, the similarities are striking.
    Oh, almost forgot, thanks for the teaching vids, sensei. Peace

    • @flamandbenoit7247
      @flamandbenoit7247 18 днів тому

      nope. good story, and i'm sorry to break this, but no.
      First, a baby fit between your arms. You can protect him, and there is no reason your limbs cannot cover his entire body.
      A sword is a meter long, at least.
      Second, a baby is not sharp enough to pierce your belly if you fall flat on the point he did'nt have.
      And that is also a big change ^ ^"

    Thank you for sharing so much. Much apriciated.
    May I ask if you think there can be a benefit in striking from just under the surface of water to make it harder for opponent to judge distance and position of the striking blade? Assume the ground below water is very stable and flat and assume the water does not move much,neither at surface or below. Choose depth freely. Both you and your oppents is in the same water. Assume the oppent is also skilled in fighting with the same kind of blade.

    • @ghanaboyz
      @ghanaboyz 8 днів тому

      i figured that the blade need to be close under the surface, just under it, so the hindering of the water is kept to a minimum. Also some movements appears worse and some better while having the blade under water at the start of the strike (probably stabbing?).
      It will probably be very hard for opponent to not look down in the water.

    • @ghanaboyz
      @ghanaboyz 7 днів тому

      I have been asked "why water?". I think it is possible that you cross water, like a smaller river, at the point where it is safest to cross. Meaning best ground and smallest force of the water. While crossing water you tend to be easily seen and can be attacked.
      With many river crossings, it seems feasible to understand fighting while standing in water.
      Also, perhaps less likely, if you go ashore on a beach from a small boat, a fight may start while in the water and before reaching land.
      If the opponent is unskilled, you probably can be very straightforward and simple, but meeting a trained and experience fighter, perhaps a special stance may help you? Judging and keeping the right distance is important is it not and it seems harder to judge if the blade is hidden at first.
