Here’s a plug for becoming familiar with botanical Latin. Laura planted Mahonia repens today. The second word in a botanical name is always a descriptor, so by looking at the name, you know that it’s a creeping plant, because “repens” = creeping. Acer rubrum? “Rubrum” = red, so that’s a red maple. It’s super interesting, and much less intimidating than people think.

That’s interesting, thanks! Have you seen Dr. Allan Armitage’s latest garden tour on Jim Putnam’s channel (HortTube)? He wrote a new book called, ‘Of Naked Ladies and Forget-Me-Nots’. It’s about the stories behind how plants get their common names. I’ve always wondered how that happens, so I’m looking forward to finding out.

Southern gardeners, check with your local AG extension before planting mahonia. It’s illegal in a lot of southern states. It grows wild in a lot of forest here, but if you come across one, don’t transplant it as you can get fined. If it’s on your property you’re supposed to kill it or you can give it to your AG extension to kill.

If you want something with a really gorgeous red color in the fall...how about a firebush or burning bush shrub? We have many in our area and they are the first to turn color and the red color is brilliant. I don't know if they are invasive in your area, I live in the northeast. They like full sun to partial sun, zone 3 through 8, get pretty big...4' to 8'. The fiery red color is stunning.

It's hard to know which I love more, Pedro & crew's stonework or your planting BIG trees! Each fully & immediately change the landscape to create the canvas/backdrop to your plantings. Each couldn't be done without. As I watched Laura choose which plant for which spot, she too, felt like an artist choosing from her palette. Gardening (as any good gardener knows) is a collaborative art form, & like any art form worked in tandem with the Creator.
BTW, as a longtime antique rose grower, I've been winnowing my collection down to thornless varieties, rather than wading into a thicket of thorns. 10 feet of thorns is not my idea of fun, no matter how pretty the blooms.

You are going to absolutely LOVE your 'Darlow's Enigma' rose. It's one of the most beautiful, scented, pollinator magnet, bird magnet, no care large shrubs you could ever wish for. Just plant it where it can get big, and let it go. No pruning necessary at all! You'll find yourself going out of your way to visit it when it's in bloom, which is almost all season. For your 'Polka" rose, I would suggest planting it on the arched pergola/arbor you have in the South garden. It is a large rose that needs room to spread out, and be trained. You efforts will be rewarded with the biggest, fluffiest, most beautiful apricot colored roses you've ever seen! It's a show stopper of a rose, and deserves a special spot where it can be admired. I look forward to seeing both of these roses thrive in your garden!

Laura, while you were at the pond, I saw a little flock of birds, and I thought they sounded like Cedar Waxwings. They do live year round in your area. I heard them again while you were planting out along the drive. They LOVE berries and are such beautiful birds! Are you noticing more birds around the new ecosystem pond (I also have a beautiful Aquascape pond), and do you find yourselves getting more interested in learning about the new birds attracted by the water? Learning the songs is so fun! Also, have you named your koi??? I think it's time!!! ❤❤❤❤

Everything looks beautiful. I just wanted to mention since it was not said in the video that it is important to remember that choke berries sucker and spread (similar to blackberries)

It says a lot about you when you appreciate the hard work and give time to credit the workers. It’s so refreshing, thank you for being so kind and thoughtful. I hope you install those qualities into your children because we need more of that in this world.

So sad about Aaron's tree and big shrub area....very disappointing to see the rose bush added...I have been married 50 years this year and when I look back at when I did things like that it's with great regret.

Stunning use of shrubbery. I have a shrub border--70'x4' running across the back of our townhome property. It is backed by a deciduously woodland. I would love to have it more than 4' deep but the HOA says no. Oh well...
I have an amazing selection of both evergreens, conifers, and deciduous plants with a maximum height of 6' to 8'. They are mostly narrow upright varieties. I love the red barberries that have upright branches reaching 4-5 feet. They are fabulous and really pop. The three of them are unevenly spaced across the border.
In the front mounded landscaped area in front of the porch i have waves of golden dwarf boxwood, To-Do burgundy barberry, and deep green soft touch holly. The colors are wonderful and being on a slope they really show off. Barberries and smaller abelias are my favorite new additions over the past two years. Easy to care for, tough and great colors. The corner of the bed has a beautiful deciduous winterberry holly which i have up-limbed. It is covered with brilliant berries all winter here in NC. If you can grow them in your area i recommend them for a bold punch of color (you will need a male and female!).
The pond is looking quite amazing. Enjoyed your video very much today. Thank you.

More boulders🙌🏻! We have chokeberries that grow naturally on the edge of the wooded area behind our house, but they get huge and unruly. Love this smaller variety 😊. Are you sure Russell is a cat lol-he follows you like a dog. 😊
