The day when I have to sin games that I've already sinned is finally here. At least that game is Resident Evil 4, one of my favorite games of all time, but a game I can easily find things wrong with because the original wore them on its sleeve. Resident Evil 4 remake may have rolled those sleeves up a bit but the same issues are still there, plus a few new ones.

The original RE 4 actually explains why Leon was sent to Europe alone with a file regarding Ashley that you can check in your inventory, it says Ashley was kidnap as a result of confidential informations being stolen meaning only someone who works or used to work as a government's operative could have had access to those informations and know with precision Ashley's whereabouts to be able to kidnap her. That's how Leon immediately knew it was Krauser who kidnapped Ashley as soon as he sees him, since Krauser had been his partner when they were in the US Socoms and so he had access to confidential informations.
Before knowing that it was Krauser who kidnapped Ashley, the Secret services believed that there was a mole among them and without knowing who to trust they couldn't even be 100% sure of their intelligence's informations about Ashley having been seen in Spain. To avoid sending a whole team to rescue her only to fall into a trap, the president sent Leon, one of the very few agents he trusted completely and also the one who was going to be assigned as her bodyguard right before she was abducted. Leon had to make sure the president's daughter was really in Spain before sending reinforcement to him in case he actually found Ashley. In fact the moment Leon says he found Ashley Hunnigan sends a US helicopter to rescue them both but in the original RE 4 they say the first chopper got shot down before it could reach them. In the remake they just say they couldn't send it immediately cause of the bad weather.
Later Hunnigan sends another chopper when Leon is able to inform her on his new location by contacting his base through a radio antenna he finds on the island just so she can tell Mike where to go search for him when she sends a new chopper to help Leon (the scene of Leon contacting his base on the island is completely missing from the remake and Mike just finds Leon on his own somehow, even though he had no clue he was on the island since the last time Leon spoke with Hunnigan he was in the castle).

8:35 Fun fact, in the Japanese dialogue of RE8, Heisenberg calls Chris a gorilla rather than “boulder punching asshole”, which is a homage to the Japanese fans of the series giving Chris the nickname of Gorilla because of how buff he is in RE5. In the English script, this is replaced with the boulder line to align the dialogue with the English-speaking fans’ perception of Chris

    • @snowblind9551
      @snowblind9551 Рік тому +44

I don't think that's entirely accurate. Modern Resident Evil games are written by Westerners (Antony Johnston, in RE8's case). Yes they're stupid when it comes to keeping Ashley captured and letting Leon live (my theory is that Leon would be a valuable assassin under their control so they'd want him alive, as Luis states Saddler's plans are to turn enemies into powerful allies in a text in his lab) but they're smart when it comes to anticipating Leon's potential whereabouts (probably due to Saddler's hivemind connection) and are able to stall for time so much so that Leon barely made it until getting the parasite nuked. It's not unreasonable to suspect that the Verdugo would be sent to the sewers in the off chance that Leon survive the pit fall as that's the only way back to the surface.

10:04 - Pesetas were discontinued in Spain in 2002 and this game takes place in 2004, and in a remote, isolated part of Spain, no less. So it's not that unusual. It'd be like complaining someone wants to buy something from you using cash, instead of Bitcoin or Cash App. Even today, pesetas can still be exchanged for Euros at a bank; you just can't buy things with them. I think the most interesting change to the remake's narrative is how much the war on terrorism effected the original story but is removed here; even though both take place in 2004.
In the OG Saddler directly tells Leon his motivation is punishing the United States for trying to police the world. And the idea of Leon being an American action hero storming in to another country and shooting everyone.
Even Leon accusing Salazar of terrorism and his sarcastic response and a number of other exchanges show this. Or how the remake does more to humanize the villagers prior to the infection vs just a basic they're a dangerous foreign threat like the original.
It's not deep but it is an aspect of it. And the remake does have aspects of Leon being a cliche American action hero but it's not in its DNA nearly as much.
You also have Krauser kind of being an agent of American military power (or an American company) and destabilizing other places to find power while now it's a more personal vendetta against the American government.
Just interesting how much when something is made effects a story regardless of when it takes place.
Las Plagas and the story being (intentionally or unintentionally) a post 9/11 terrorism allegory to just being bent on world domination now for its own sake and just happens to target the American government.

My sin is that some bosses' pre-introductions are neutered compared to the original. The El Gigante fight. In the original, you had the villagers that feared no death fighting Leon hustling and looking scared bringing the Gigante out. It comes bursting out and starts slaughtering the villagers while the scream in fear. They scream in fear. It took Leon knocking them off a bridge to make them show that kind of emotion and this thing was making the ganados wet themselves immediately. Then they're all dead and Leon does a slick cartwheel dodging the Gigante's grab. That's one hell of an introduction.
Second was the Verdugo. I'll say that the REmake did a good job expanding on its backstory and its previous life, but if you played the Remake only, he just came out of nowhere. Did you even know it was the red one?? The original had Salazar throw a tantrum and personally sent the Verdugo to hunt Leon after he survived another attempt to kill him and deafened his ear in the process. I definitely agree with the intro, but here are a couple minor gripes that are or could be explained away. Mendez injecting Leon isn't necessarily done with Luis having a clear vantage point, he could have just appeared to be making sure Leon stayed down before moving them both to the next area. After Del Lago fight when you park the boat, if you look back the boat sank, so you get a new boat at the next dock through the other end of the area you landed at. You've already found a stack of TNT prior to the 2 on 2 fight with Luis, so he easily could have backtracked or otherwise known of or seen another stack. Krauser had already left the US on unsteady ground before he joined Los Illuminados, so he couldn't have infected high ranking members any better than their Ashley plan.
Also QTE cutscene fights weren't irritating when they give you a super cool unique death scene and can skip the cutscenes to 2 seconds before the QTE. It was only a problem in like RE5 on Professional where they give you less than half a second to react. Anyways back to the counters.
Honestly the speedboat convo being audible is better for simplicity rather than going, 'crap I forgot to turn on subtitles' and not being able to hear them at all, as the volume balance indicates the motor is on, but the conversation is what is important.
Overall I liked both as games, but the OG is still better on average for the numerous comparisons you listed among others.

I don't know if you ever covered this but ever since door openings have stopped being cut scenes to load in the next room, all hinged room doors have been 'saloon' style doors that can be pushed from either side which is pretty rare and makes it not quite as effective at keeping a zombie from breaking through. The only doors that are 'pull to open' are cupboards and lockers.

He then ran back home to Spain and found work for a local lab on an island people oppressed for worship an insect (to make himself feel better) Those oppressed people used his discoveries to plot world domination to make “peace” He realized this, found a way to destroy the parasite and then turned to an organization of spies that wanted to stop them, but unbeknownst to him the leader of those people had plans entirely his own (wesker)to wipe out billions to create a new race of super humans. Leon's mission was to scout the parameter, find Ashley and protect her until said reinforcements arrive. The arrival was impossible based on weather conditions once Ashley was located and the location confirmed, when they got into the castle (looking for shelter, safety from the Ganados and help from Luis). In the castle they are under attack, not really safe enough to wait for reinforcements and they are waiting on Luis with the cure. Communication with roost fail because their frequencies get jammed. The frequencies used by the government. Not all of them. Therefore Ada, Luis and Wesker still have channels to communicate over, even more so when they aren't too far apart from another.

@@NatanCaetano I can argue despite the attempt, Remake feels somewhat less scary than the original. I can list everything.
      1. The Morose and foreboding cloudy weather is gone.
      2. Trees are still green.
      3. What made Dr. Salvador scary was that he was a clean person who does what he is told. He kills Leom quickly in the original but here he is just another Ganado who his OHK.
      4. In the room where a Ganado with an Axe ambushes Leon and Luis. In the original, he was anticipated and even Leon was fearing him. Here, he comes out of nowhere and his presence is forgotten.
      5. The Dogs have much more exaggerated features making them less scary.
      6. Del Lago jumpscare is infinitely worse than the original.
      7. For a supposed rainy night, the village is still well lit. In the original, the village turned very dark and grim. Here it just feels like a regular village.
      8. That foreboding storm SFX is gone.
      9. The Cutscene where the Villagers walked away was somewhat creepy as it showed there is still some humanity left in them. Now the cutscene is replaced by an over the top, almost comedic feeling cutscene in a supposed serious game.
      10. The Save Room Ambience also felt somewhat creepy. Like suggesting calm before a storm.
      11. The scene where the Giant kills every Ganado was also scary. TBF, the Zealot waking him up is also scary. I wish it was a combination of both.
      12. Mendez had transformation cutscene in the original. Now he comes out transformed.
      13. The scene where Ganado Ambush Leon and Ashley and cornering them into the castle made much more sense.
      14. The Garrador in the original was silent but you still anticipated something was wrong. Here he was active which made it less scary.
      15. I don't think this Almost Fantast feeling Castle Wall section was scary.
      16. That Novistador SFX of breaking a gate and then walking in the OG was scary.
      17. Haven't mentioned it yet, but the removal of Cutscene QTEs also was scary. Except the Krauser one, I am glad it is gone.
      18. In the OG, there was a scene where Ganados were performing a Ritual with You Are Dead Music playing in the background is removed.
      19. The "Advanced Darkness" in the OG was better than "Full Darkness" of the Remake.
      20. The Old Castle ruins was removed.
      21. JJ was the least scariest of the minibosses in the original but somehow they made him even less scary.
      22. The Whole set up of the Regenerators was perfect in the original. Here, it feels less scary. However, perfection can't be replicated.
      23. In scene where Leon rescues Ashley for the last time, that was much much scarier in the original but is less scarier in the remake. The way he shruggs off the Bullets, that creepy smile, the way he slowly follows Leon and Ashley. It was very creepy.
      24. And again, him opening his Mouth feels much more scary tha his speach about the Holy Body.
      25. And the fight with Ada is quite possibly the scariest moment in the original. Now he feels less generic.

The story of Krauser is kind of sad when you think about it. In the first fight, he would not shut up about the failure of Operation Javier and how all his men except for Leon died. Then in the second fight he says that he is just doing this for power and how it is the only thing that matters in the world, but when fighting his mutated form he will still talk like the loss of his men was his main focus.
His want for power came from the feeling of being helpless and powerless to save his team in the jungle, coupled with his own PTSD. Saddler promised him that power he seeked in exchange for servatude. The parasite gave him the strength and power that he wanted, but it cost him his mind. So, by the time the last fight against Krauser happened the parasite started to turn his motivation to a more basic "I want power" motive.

Here's a major sin I have with this remake, specifically in regards to aiming.
Because they removed the laser sight from most guns, Leon now has to rely on the same reticle aiming mechanics from RE2, the one where the longer you stood still when aiming, the tighter the focus on your reticle gets, but if you move you lose focus. It's takes the same amount of time as well.
This made sense in RE2 because your primary enemies in RE2 were the slow moving zombies (Also combat wasn't really the main focus in that game unlike in RE4), so the game rewarded your patience by making focused reticle shots more accurate and either do more damage or increased the chance of a critical headshot. This doesn't work in RE4 though because your primary enemies aren't slow moving zombies, but parasitic villagers and cultists who can move fast and attack you from all angles, which leaves little opportunity to line up your accuracy and shots.
This also creates two issues with the Ludonarrative Harmony of this remake, that being 1. That in between the events of RE2 and RE4 when Leon was undergoing government training (As well as going on missions as he mentions in the intro), his skills with firearms accuracy never improved from his rookie cop days, and 2. Leon Scott Kennedy, a guy who started out as a rookie cop then graduated into a highly trained government agent, has worse firearm skills than Ethan Winters, a systems engineer from Los Angeles.
In both RE7 and Village, whenever you aimed, especially with the handgun, the target reticle would immediately focus into a single dot on the screen with no delay. Ethan never had training in RE7 though, only in Village, as he was just a normal guy then, so the fact that Ethan's skills with firearms when he was just a normal guy is somehow much better than Leon's after he became a government agent is incredibly polarizing. What was he doing the past two years, you ask Krauser? Obviously not polishing up his firearm skills.
This goes to show just how bland and uninteresting REmake 4 Leon is compared to OG RE4 Leon, you'd think that someone who undergoes government training and also had trouble aiming his gun during his first day as a rookie cop surviving against the walking dead would be a lot more confident and prepared for this kind of mission, which OG RE4 Leon is. You can almost headcannon that the reason Leon got a laser sight for his gun in OG RE4 is because during the events of RE2, he realized how bad his aiming skills were.

@@vincentnugent9888 I’d agree with you there (as an older fan). I keep saying they should add it to the merchant’s upgrade shop or add another laser pointer that is compatible with more guns.

13:05 I know the purpose of the video is being nitpicky, but Leon uses another boat to navigate the Lake after (the one the two Ganados used to dump the policeman body), yours can be seen sunken on the boathouse when you regain control of Leon after the cutscene.

The plaga suppressant made sense to me. It seems Saddler hired Sera to develop medication against the plaga infection so he could selectively bred a more resistant strain to their "weakness". Sera probably helped because after all the Umbrella shit he felt as though the least he could do is to find out what killed his grandfather and develop medication for it, not knowing Saddler was using him from the get go. So the "suppressant" could be the original cure to the plaga which is now less effective by Saddler's newest subordinate strain. Makes sense because Saddler would know full well modern medicine could easily find a cure to the parasite. Unlike the 1500's where they could have achieved world domination if not for the Salazar family. (which is why they have blue lanterns around the castle).

One disappointment I have is that the game doesn’t capitalize on the fact that Mendez looks a lot like Mr X, with his outfit, size and skin complexion making him a damn near dead ringer for the Tyrant. If they really wanted to explore the PTSD angle, have Leon get flashbacks to the Tyrant attacking him, like he’s thinking “No way, I killed you!”

DC Douglas broke an NDA by sharing the concept art of Wesker from this game on his stream, and he may or may not be involved with pedophilia. So he more than likely won't be coming back for 5.

People got upset about Ada's VA getting backlash over her performance and I admit some took it a little too far but when you deliver your lines sounding more dead on the inside than lobotomized zombie villagers I think it is fair to consider the "mean people" might be onto something. I hope she gets to keep working as a VA and improves upon her craft but there's no denying Capcom should have considered someone else for the role.

Or at least bring back the one from RE2 Remake. Was the VA in this from the Netflix show and they just brought her on to promote it? That's not the actress's fault if so.

Remove a sun for radio jamming. You can 100% target frequencies. You can righty assume Ada and Krauser are on different frequencies than Leon. Hell, they may be on encrypted sat links given Umbrella’s technology.
