- Add fun puffy applique embellishments to your quilts with this easy faux trapunto technique. There's a companion post here where you can see it in use for other patterns as well - like googly monster eyes. www.shinyhappy...
I never even knew what trapunto was, this is just what I need for a rag quilt embellishment. Thanks for the easy to follow tutorial!
My God, as you explain well… I don't speak your language but I put the video in translation mode and I managed to do it… I had never watched something so well explained about the false transunto… 😍 Thank you very much
Thanks Wendi for your tutorial. This is what I was looking for. :)
What can I say another Great quilt block. Added to this new flower quilt. Thank You Wendi
I love your technic of fake Turpunto. Now I can do so much stuff on my quilts, pillows, etc. Thank you.
6 years later and I am happy you made this!! Thank you!
You make everything seem so doable. Can't wait to try some of the things I've learned from you.
Yeah!! I was working on a coneflower and envisioned a raised middle. Now I know how to do it. Your videos and patterns are great. Thanks for all the support.
Hello Ms. Wendy, I like that, that was really awesome 👏🏿. Thank you so much for your teaching and sharing.
Happy little cloud 🤗 It's so cute! Thank you for this tutorial!
This is exactly what I needed, thank you!
Thank you Wendi for showing us how to do this cute and fun technique.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I've been trying to figure out how to do this for a year. Your method solves all the problems. I can't wait to use it on my wall hanging.
Thank you so much! Just starting a dinosaur quilted play mat for my grandson. Can’t wait to use this method for the clouds and tree tops.
Love the whimsy of it. Thanks for the great tutorial.
Thank you so very much for sharing your amazing gift. It appears quite simple. In actuality it is your talent and love for what you create that makes this appear simple/easy. I have been soft sculpting with material for many years. Your demonstration is exacting. With practice, also achievable. Thank you, again. Looking forward to the joy this has inspired.
Wendy, this is such an excellent tutorial! As are all of yours. I am planning my next project and this is going to be incorporated.
Awesome technique 👍❤️
Thank you I have just discovered your tutorials, clear and easy to follow.
Brilliant- thank you- just doing North Pole quilt- love your designs
Thank you Wendi! Such a neat effect to add to the blocks!
Thank you! I can think of so many ways to enhance my projects with it.
Adorable work, Wendi. Sooo cute!
I was wondering how this was done! Thank you so much! ❤️
Brilliant and easy method .... thanks heaps Wendy ❤️
I have just found your tutorials today Wendy, I love them and love the style of you QAYG. I want to try this and will use your tutorials to make me brave. Thank you xx
This is a great and easy method. Thank you Wendy!
Beautiful pieces and fun! I also love your Bob Ross-ities hehe. Take care!
Awesome idea... thank you!
Great tutorial. I make lots of wonky style house appliques and they always feel like they're missing something. a balloon tree or cloud just brings it to life.
Thank you for such a detailed explanation-I’m going to try it. 🤞🏼
What a great way to emphasize a mini quilt top. Sandra B.
I'm. Gonna use this with my students.. Very easy and manageable
wow, how cute and easy
You are amazing, Wendi! Thank you!
Love this method of 'Trapunto'! I've been looking for something to do for a polar bear appliqué instead of using wool/rayon for a baby quilt I'm making. Thanks for this video!
Thank you Wendi lovely tutorial as usual, Norma ,England
Oh Wendi!!! I love this! And I know exactly where I'm going to be using it because I have your cat quilt pattern & have a number of blocks completed already but for the kitties with the separate noses (snouts?) I'm going to do them puffy!!!!
Thanks so much!!! I love all your videos & love your patterns as well!
Thanks u... This is very good tutorial 👍👍👍
Love this! Thank you for sharing.
I love this so much!!
Love this video !
This is great thanks❤❤
So cute, just love it!
Amazing thanks for sharing
Thanks so much for your detailed tutorial.
Thank u so much mam for sharing such a nice and helpful video 👍
Love the tip. TFS
Thank You for this video. I always wandered how to do this.
It's beautiful!
Very cool! Do you ever have trouble with the stuffing shifting around after the quilt is finished? Would it be beneficial to hand stitch the slit in the back of the applique closed?
No trouble with shifting - but I should have clarified that I'm using polyester fiberfill (this is a review of my favorite brand www.shinyhappyworld.com/2013/10/stuffing_review_giveaway.html) which is machine washable. There's no need to sew up the opening in the back because you stitch the shape in pace all the way around the edge. There's nowhere for any escaping stuffing to go. :-)
I bought a roll of butcher paper several years ago and still have half of it. It’s just ‘freezer paper’ in. Continuous roll.
PERFECT DEMO!!!!!
Nice tutorial, would it be possible to do the whole piece like this not just the tree part?
Gostei, ficou bem interessante. Parabéns pelo seu trabalho.
Great tutorial!
I have a question about applique quilts. What is the the right etiquette/traditional way of sewing applique on a quilt? Should you applique on just the quilt top first and then assemble the layers and then quilt it? (so that the back of the quilt won't have the reverse outline stitching of the applique) Or are you supposed to see the reverse stitching of the applique on the back of the quilt as part of the quilting design? Thank you!
very cool, thank you very much :)
Awesome tutorial!! Question, when you do this on a heart , it has a wider middle, when you wash it will the batting move?
It depends on the batting. I use Warm & Natural and it can be quilted as much as 10 inches apart.
Way too cute. I have a Bernina 830 and was wondering how you do the "hovering" that you mentioned
I have the 770 and to turn hover on you have to find your presser foot settings, if it has one. My machine and manual is packed up for travel tomorrow so I can't be specific. Try your manual or Google it, there are videos on where to find it.
Thank you soooo much!
great video, do you think its possible to do a trapunto quilting design on lightweight faux leather?
REPLY
I don't see why not.
I'm new to quilting and have been doing it by hand. Could I do this (somewhat) easily without a machine?
Absolutely!
Nice tutorial Wendi. It looks like you used a walking foot, is that correct?
Yes - I always have my walking foot engaged.
Could you use the zig zag stitch rather a straight stitch on the tree?
Sure!
super
What does the back of the quilt look like ?
I do this work before I add the backing, so you don't see it from the back. It just looks normal-flat.
Wendi, could you have 1 piece of fabric and 1 of fusible? So it stays in place until you sew it?
I don't think that would work. I think a fusible interfacing used as the back fabric would be too weak - and it would be awfully hard for the heat to penetrate enough to melt it through the layer of stuffing. Even using fusible adhesive on felt requires a significantly longer press time than what the package recommends. If you're worried about it shifting around, I'd just use a fabric glue stick instead. I've done that before when I position a bunch in one batch and then take the stack over to the machine for sewing in one batch and it holds great.
+Wendi Gratz thank you, that's really good to know. I love how it looks. I'm working on my monster quilt for my first grand baby who's coming in December. The class has been super helpful.
I just don’t understand why you wouldn’t sew most of the shape down first, leave a small opening- and then just sew the small opening after stuffing. This way seems like you are adding a huge amount of unnecessary labor. But I guess people do things differently, it really is a lovely effect.
Thanks for great idea!
