Four Years Later... Original Grail Watch Achieved

- I LOVE the Breitling Navitimer. It stood out to me the first time I went into a watch dealer, nervous and sweating. This is the watch I took a picture of and told myself I had to have it. Now, I do.

That is a beauty and love the older wing logo, much better than the current ones. Its a definite icon of a watch 👍
I agree!
I don't get this "watch collecting journey" trap/chimera/illusion, many content creators create. Is it the hunt for clicks, the need for fresh content, trying to be relevant... but ultimately it inspires people to fill an emotional void with a physical object. 1 year from now, the title will be "why I sold parted with the Navitimer".
I think people are interested in it. I myself watch many of those videos. It’s fun to see people’s excitement or enjoyment. Watches won’t fill a void, but they are fun charms along the way. Appreciate the thoughtful comment
Yep. 100%. It’s essentially a way to try and make an obsession with consumerism look like an obsession with watches. All about spending money rather than the love of the watches themselves - it simply can’t be about loving watches as none of these ‘collectors’ ever actually collect, they buy and sell buy and sell buy and sell - yeah so consumerism.
Nothing wrong with that btw if you have the money then go nuts. Just be honest about the addiction and free yourself.
@@drdesign6886I think certain watches are like beautiful art. So if it's ok to admire art, then why not watches?
@@tbprofile1295 agree on the art comparison. It’s why I often pop into a gallery to admire the works - same as popping into the jewellery store to admire the watches. What I don’t do is buy art then 6 months later sell it to buy a different painting in a recurring pattern over and over again and call it my art journey.
Good morning from Oregon. First time viewer/subscriber and baby “watch fella.” Anyway, I’ve got my first appointment with an AD in a couple of days, Tuesday, Sept 5, 2023. I’m 49 years old. And the way you described your first visit to an AD in the first couple of minutes in this video is oddly close to word for word the nervous conversations I’ve had in my head about my visit on Tuesday. I fearlessly climb frozen waterfalls in Alaska, Montana and Colorado and yet I’ve been CRAZY nervous about this appointment for WEEKS!! And I’ve had to talk myself out of canceling several times. Anyway, listening to you describe your own nervousness, for your own personal reasons, was quite encouraging. So, that’s a VERY long winded way for me to say THANK YOU! ❤️💪🏽😃🔥 ⏰ 🕰️
Haha it’s to be expected! It’s all about new environments, regardless of experiences and age. Just tell them what you like. Most the AD’s have some watch nerds there. If you find them, it’s all easy from there! Good luck!
hey frosty, how did your appointment go?
@@steelsteez6118 Steel! Thanks so much for being so thoughtful and asking. I was just as nervous as one might expect. Such a random thing, this having feelings. Anyhoo, the dealer was very kind and approachable and generous and thoughtful and down to earth and helpful. I honestly don't think I could have asked for a better experience. This "enjoying watches" is such a journey into my own personal thought process and I'm very grateful to navigate it with such thoughtful people as yourself! Thank you! I was quite a bit more comfortable being 2,000 feet off the ground and hanging by a 9mm rope on the side of Half Dome at Yosemite National Park last week. The human brain is a crazy thing!! lol :)
I think you got the perfect iteration of the Navitimer, with the best logo Breitling ever utilized. Also, two stitch straps are amazing-great company
I have the blue dial version of this watch in mint condition, and the dial is like a sunburst. It's gorgeous.
I was bewildered with your watch's lack of a quick set date. Apparently, they used the wrong case. In that regard, your Navitimer is unique! Enjoy your watch.
Congratulations on achieving the Grail 😊
Thank you!! 😊
Yeah I have this watch too. You have to turn it 8:45pm to just past 12 and so forth to scroll through the date wheel. So it’s not that bad
Harrison, thanks fo this excellent review. I have a few to many pieces and am chrono heavy and really like them but back many years ago I saw a Navitimer on a friends wrist and never forgot it. Like yourself I prefer non cluttered dials. Low and behold I saw your exact model on ebay recently and tried to convince myself that I don't need another piece. Couple days went by and every time I went to the site I was worried that it had sold. I pounced on it a couple days ago andit is on it's way to the authenticator. I have some decent chronos like a speedy, late 90s Monaco and Tudor reverse panda but nothing has ever excited me like my wait on my new old a23322 reverse panda. It just oozes old school and hopefully it all pans out.
Great video as always! All the Navitimers I've seen have the blue AR coating, including my own. I do wish it was clear instead, as having a blue tint doesn't really fit that well into the Navitimer vintage aesthetics. But a minor gripe as the watch is undeniably an iconic beauty!
Stunning piece, looks great on you!
Nice watch update. I remember a Navitimer annual calendar that looked similar to this…dont remember the reference. Nice watch!
I have the 43mm Swiss air Navi and I keep it on a black nato with a red stripe. It’s my bae.
My Grail watch bought new in 2002 ref A13322 still on original bracelet with date at 3o’clock does have a date quick set capability by pulling out winder to first stop. So I guess you should have bought an earlier version if you wanted that capability
You're right. A grail watch is totally an emotional thing, and therefore there is no point in trying to come up with a logical expiation as to why, even if one knows that a simple Seiko 7-T-92 quartz movement chronograph that sells for a 150 bucks is a better watch.
Nice i have a vintage 65 navi, congrats
I sold mine. I could never gel with it. It felt less refined than some of my other chronograph watches (Speedy, IWC Spitfire)…I was disappointed because I had lusted after it for years. My Pelagos though..I don’t think will ever leave my collection!
😊 So if this is the original grail (and well done on achieving it), what’s the current grail watch objective? 😂
why sell the Pelagos!? You loved it the most
I’m digging the new intro, nice work man
Appreciate it! Trying new things!
The only watches for me that are a staple of a collection are the following: a Cartier santos, a omega speed master moonwatch and a Rolex submariner and at least 1 of the holy trinity sports watches, I would pick a vacheron overseas, that would be it for me. Breitling does nothing for me to be honest.
Ahhh well I love them. Great watches you mentioned though!
I've got respect for the Navitimer and it's truly iconic, but it's an old man watch, for me it only works if you're 60+
Don’t ever sell this watch. Trust me, I once made that mistake and nothing ever could replace it. Ended up buying it back. Dream watches like then navitimer shouldn’t be jettisoned especially since you got it preowned at a good value. This is a fantastic legend of a piece, especially this reference
you should get a 22mm strap! the gap is distracting.
I already bought one. I just couldn’t wear that leather strap in 98 degree humid Indy summer!
OCD detected😂..it is trending nowadays😀
I have this exact watch. You can change the date faster by winding the watch back past 9 o’clock then forward past midnight over and over. Still a pain… but waaaaay faster than what you were doing, going 24 hours per date change. 😊
Came in the comments section to post this. Still a bit of a pain in the ass, but much better than going through the entire calendar.
Is this safe for the movement?
You have to pull the winder into half position not out fully. Make sure the watch has some movement in it, check the seconds are ticking. You then need to do half turns of the winder 39 - 42 times before it will allow you to fast date set. Going back and forth between 9 and 12. Brilliant classic watch
As iconic as the Sub or Speedy in my opinion - fantastic watch (and definitely suits your personality)
Thanks!
@@HarrisonElmore Sorry, but a true gentleman would never wear a watch over 36mm
As a true gentleman, wear only period proper 34mm or less. I also only drink gin martinis and spoke a pipe.
Interested to see a video for the reasons for selling the pelagos. Seemed to be a good fit from the last ones, interesting to see how things change over time. Enjoy the new one!
change rapidly 🤣
I love Navitimer, you should have gone for the B01, mechanical and performance wise is better overall. However I do own a version with 7750 and like it too.
I’m a big Breitling fan, and the Navitimer is a legitimate icon. Enjoy!
I personally think I would buy the SINN 903 St it looks just like the navitimer but it has 100M WR. When Breitling needed cash they sold the rights to Sinn and parts as well.
I almost got a Sinn903, and I just happened to win this one on eBay. I’ll check out the 903 one day!
@@HarrisonElmore Either way is an awesome grail. If you are into the world of pilot watches you should check out Hanhart and Alpina both good alternatives for Breguet Type XX and IWC big pilot.
Absolutely would love to see a video on why you let the Pelagos 39 go (and didn't bond with it?). I reckon I've watched your other vids on it like 5 times each!
Haha Wow! Bonding wasn’t the reason, but I will! Everything in the other videos still stands
What you might be able to do to more quickly set the date, is advance the hands through the COMPLETE date change, reverse the hands back before 8pmish (before where the date change mechanism would be engaged), and then advance forward through the date change again. Repeating until you get to the correct date. Still not "quickset" but if it works, might save you some time.
I've had some 7750 watches without quickset that were able to do this.
Yes, this!! I learned that way too late too :D
Woah! I feel as though I just learned Grand Theft Auto has cheat codes. Thank you!
Man - no quick set that’s annoying
Although no quick set in a true gmt either, but that is much faster
Agreed! I’ll manage I think!
This whole video was essentially you telling us all that you will be selling your brand new purchase within a few months. Fair do’s, enjoy it while you have it I guess.
The Navitimer is a legitimate grail watch. Several Breitlings has passed through me and my next one in future will definitely be this one. As for the free spinning oscillator I love that, besides the fact you can see it’s a mechanical movement you can feel it also.
Most beautiful watch ever 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Tip= AS I to wear and work. I would recommend taking off for impact activities. Such as hammering or using tools with aggressive vibrations.
To quick set it, go past midnight and let the date change. Then wind it backwards to past 8:00 then go forward again past 12 and date will change again. Ok so it’s not that quick, but faster than going all the way around.
I got one recently, same reference but silver dial with brown leather strap. It is stunning to me.
May it bring you many years of enjoyment.
Very nice! I own a 38mm Navitimer Montbrillant myself and they are cool looking watches.
Funny thing, mine has the B logo and that logo is actually the original one used in the 50s Chronomat that were the foundation of the Navitimer. I love the winged logo but from a "vintage" perspective, the B is more accurate haha. Cheers
I have the 12,9,6 Blue and white vintage. The anti reflective is stock on the watch on the outside of the crystal. Be careful as you can polish it off like I did with a crystal polishing kit (Polywatch)
Have u tried the 41 navitimer? I tried in in the metal today at a breitling store and fell
In love… I get the “busyness” you speak of.. it just gets you with this watch and draws you in.. I didn’t think I’d like it , but I was wrong.. it’s class.
Absolutely gorgeous watch. My all time favorite. I am going to buy one soon.
Is the background actually black, or a very dark blue?
Splendid.
Once you have made yourself familiar with using the logarithmic scales, you can unsubscribe from UA-cam, Netflix, Amazon Prime and spend all your free time computing your life away with the slide rule bezel.
There is another way to set the day, when you pass 12 and the day change you go back to 7:55 and then ahead to 12 again, the day will change again. You keep doing that until you reach the desire day. That way you don't have to wind 24 hours for each day , just from 12 to before 8.
Don't let the water resistance hold so much power over your decision. If the watch isn't specifically made to go in water ...just don't get it wet. Some collectors get obsessed w/water resistance rating. Unless you live or work around lots of water I think owning a watch that has a lower than 100m/50m shouldn't make or break the decision.
If you're the type of person that is conscious enough about your watch to film it while you're working, IMO it shouldn't be an issue to keep it dry. If you're worried about torrential rain showers or washing your hands just put it in your pocket while dealing w/such issues.
The Navitimer was made for the sky not the ocean
PS-yeah...I agree with w/another commenter...definitely get the wider strap. That gap looks horrendous
The 2022 navitimer refresh has a quick set date. Should have done your research and spent slightly more for a 'grail watch'
you can look in the sinn903 - they are just going to reissue the new model. you have 200m water resistance 1/3 of the price
Dont say never ever because anything can happen with watch hobby
Agreed!
I would absolutely want to see a video on why you sold your Pelagos 39! Great video.
just curious, it doesn't switch date, when you set it backwards to before 8pm and then forward over 1am again and repeat?
I own a newer version with the B01 movement. I love it. It does not have the wings logo and that is a negative but it is still a fantastic watch.
The Breitling Navitimer.. CLASSIC !!
Very nice watch. I would stick with preowned. The new chrono navitimers are way too pricey
Congratulations 👏👏👏 Honestly, it looks 10/10 on your wrist, especially with the Artem strap. Side note: the way you talked about the Pelagos, thought you’d keep it. Cheers
Thanks! Agreed. I’ve got a 22mm in the mail to fix the gap! I loved the pelagos and I probably will rebuy it or a version of it. I’ll make a video. Typically like anything it’s just about what you’d rather have with limited funds
@@HarrisonElmore I have a classic Artem strap and wear it at the last buckle hole (6.75 inch wrist). I thought the deployant would wear as long (100/97) with the clasp almost at the curve of the wrist, but you seem barely off-centre. Do you recommend it, considering the length? Thanks
@@watchound.bernardo9738 I've got the loopless strap that I'm wearing it on, so the buckle side is longer than the classic strap. I love it. The length is perfect. It feels centered on my wrist. I also have a classic one with a buckle and it's a bit small and means I'm usually one of the last holes, so I think I'd look at the loopless and the deployant clasp if I were you
Date set is a pain in the butt. Thats why I bought a Montbrilliant with no date. At my age I can't see the date window anyway. Ha.
Not my jam at all but i love following your journey. Congrats!
I appreciate that!
Love it, I had the same experience walking into the watch store for the first time, thought it was the coolest watch they had. Love the new models, plan to pick up the ice blue or reverse panda 43mm hopefully sooner than later.
The Navi is such a classic and a keeper for life.
Congrats, my man! The Navi is classy and classic. Looks great on you. Breitling is def on the rise these days; they’re doing great things over there.
This is the best Navi, you picked well. Last gen with the wings. I'm not a fan of the the new Navi, I can't get over the date window in a sub dial, even if they did it well. Love the channel, you got a sub.
Thanks! It’s my favorite version too.
Actually the Next Gen (the First with the B01) has wings too
The blue IS the colour coming from the AR coating! Omega and Breitling are well known for their high quality AR coating skills - but I like my modern Omega AT’s colourless AR coating than the blue AR coating sheen. No biggie though - a legendary watch from an awesome brand. Congratulations on the new journey! I still don’t have a sports chrono and craving hard for it and this video got my cogs rolling…
Haha I figured, but thanks for the confirmation. Good luck!
Like see and learn about 2nd hand watches with a good value proposition
Thats not a panda dial. A panda would be white dial with black sub dials.
Hey i have the same one with steel strap. a24322 or something
To each their own
Why not the model without date? I really prefer it :)
I think if you go to the 9 oclock an than to 12 you can chance the date
A grail watch indeed, that I would love to own. Thank you for sharing this with us all.
Any time!
Love the watch. Currently torn between the speedy and Navitimer. Your dial looks navy blue vs black to me. Regardless it’s beautiful.
Appreciate it! I’ll be doing a comparison between the speedy and navitimer this week. Might help
@@HarrisonElmore cool I will look forward to it dropping
Get the AB0120 ref instead! ... the BEST Navi there is IMO (I own it). Fixes your dislikes. Quickset date, colormatched date wheel, gold applied wings, BO1, 70 hours power (wing and anchor on seconds hand), sull slide rule, black galvanised silver dial, and batton indicies. Its an absolute gem and a keeper. Water resist is its only downfall ... but, I can let that slide (thats what a sub or a gshock is for). Also get the braclet for the extra bling when you feel like it.
Good watch but water rezistence sucks 😢
Can’t believe you sold the pelagos! This is a cool one tho. Don’t see these every day which is cool.
The rotor sounds like my sinn 140 lol
The strap is horrible being Not 22mm
I need a good 21mm strap for my Squale Tropic! My Squale makes the same sound. And I love the blue tent! That Breitling watch is my favorite model! Keep it 42mm is not big.. And I have a watch winder fixes all the problems just like you said
0:48 I'm still really curious why you sold the Pelagos 39. In the refinishing video in July you were still happy with the watch. What changed?
Perfect navitimer, I recently acquired a Chronomat Blackbird in 39mm with the old logo...for me the most classy period of Breitling with a pure aviation universe. Congrats for your navitimer.
3 watches isn't a collection. All these videos, "the perfect 3 watch collection". If you are "collecting" things, it is ongoing, always happening and you keep acquiring new editions to the collection. Nice looking Navitimer BTW.
The WR is a deal breaker for me. That's basically nothing, not even rainproof. :(. Wish they'd just beef these up to 100m. Perfect.
Looks very fitting on you because you look happy in it. Enjoy it in good health
I have this watch and I love it! And I hate the lack of the quick set date! 😡
There is a way around this problem, by screwing back and forth and forth between 9PM and 1AM. That is what I do!
I own the same Navi but blue. You dont need to rotate the hands 24 hours at a time. Move the min hand 10 mins past midnight, then go back to about 11:40 PM. You will actually hear the watch click. Then back to 12:10 the date will advance. Then repeat going back to 11:40 etc. Much much faster, but yeah I have it on a watch winder then its grab and go. Its my favorite watch in my collection, I have the same wrist size and its so damn comfortable.
I have the exact same watch with both black leather strap and Breitling bracelet - the nest sized and best looking Navitimer ever made. Also, the best and most iconic chronograph IMO.
The date adjustment would annoy me too. Sell it and save for the new B01. It’s an absolute gem. Date at 6 too. It disappears when you’re not looking for it. I have the 43mm on steel and it’s a favorite. Sure it’s a busy dial, but it has a purpose. It’s more of an instrument to me than a watch.
I didn't like the navitimer until I tried one on. I think it's cool that you wear your watches. I have 3 collection groups 1. Work 2. Home 3. Casio!
As a former vintage guy I can't tell you the way to quickly change the date is to cycle the watch back and forth between 9ish and wherever the new day pops in. (1-1:30ish) .
It's pretty quick once you get the hang of it. 👍
There is a faster way to set the date. Go to midnight wine, hands backwards till 9 o’clock and then forwards to midnight and it changes the date. Nice watch I have the same one.
A friend of mine inherited a vintage navitimer ( pre Watwr Resistance) , another friend has a Sinn 903 . No one I know has a modern brietling navitimer which is telling
Nice comprehensive video. I like the navitimer a lot. Good review. The no quickset date is annoying. My grandpa’s seiko is the same. I thought about getting a navitimer but I have a speedy that I am not getting rid of. Glad you can enjoy it for a time
Great video!! With all due respect, I think you underestimate the damage that water or steam can cause to a dial and movement of a watch. If you ever see water or steam inside of a watch it would require an immediate service 👍🏻
How can i know if it is original
Have one also, on a rubber strap. But 43 mm B01. The olo is much better than the actually B.
Congrats man 👌🏼 can’t believe you departed from the P39 though 😅
I have seen many navitimers on UA-cam and all of them have blue AR coating.
You made a great choice. The Navi is a wonderful timepiece and the 42mm size is perfect in my opinion. Breitling is staring to listen to their customers and downsizing their Navi's collection and I think they offer the modern edition in 41mm, 43mm, and 46mm. One thing to keep an eye on with the 7750 is the auto winding work and reverser gears. If you go to wind the watch at the crown and it is difficult to wind or the rotor spins as you wind the crown, get the auto winding mechanism reverser gears cleaned and serviced. Oh that 7750 wobble. Workhorse movement. I have the Sinn 903 which is essentially a Navittimer and they have figured out how to offer a quick set date.
Good move getting rid of the Tudor. Not a fan of Tudor. Enjoy the Breitling for now !
Thank you for this detailed review. Did not know about how inconvenient it is to set the date. Subscribed !
I love the watch, the Navitimer is a classic for a reason, totally agree about the wings logo, congrats on getting your grail !
Navitimer is horrible
Looking sharp.
Thanks!
I have several Rolexs and I absolutely want a Breitling almost exactly like this. Except I want the Blue leather watch band. I’m a huge fane of Breitling watches
