I love your videos! They are so soothing to watch when don't quite have enough time/energy to paint anything, I put it playing in the background when I study for exams :D

Thanks for sharing as always. You answered one of my main questions, what to draw first!!! See how brilliant you are, a answering questions before they are asked.

I forgot to mention: ...if I'm at the sketch point at the 0:47 mark in the video and at that point decide to draw people on the sidewalk...it just seems difficult to do because I don't know where the eye level is? Isn't the eye-level different from vanishing point of buildings vs. eye-level of people?? Sorry for so many questions.

+Sylvia Catalano Several things to note about the eye level.
      1. The eye level is from your eye.
      2. If you're standing and looking forward, the eye level is the horizon level
      3. If you're standing and looking upwards, your eye level is in the sky
      4. From point 2, the eye level will cut through the same body part of every person in the scene. E.g. If all the people are as tall as you, their eyes will be level with your eyes. Let's say you're now sitting down and your eye level is lower and now intersects at people's waist. Then in your sketch, all the waist will be at the same level.
Here's an exercise. Go to a place outdoors where there are a lot of people. Do this few things.
      1. Stand and spot the body part that intersects with your eye level. It will be people's eyes.
      2. Squat down so that your eye is now at people's waist and note that all the waists are now on the same level.
      3. If you can go even lower, put your eye level at people's knee and note that every knee is at the same level.

Oh!! I understand now!!! lol Wow, that is a really good explanation. I will try and do this today! Thanks a million, Teoh. :) :)

p.s. Would really love to see a future video of this. I guess the problem for me is after the buildings are drawn in...it's hard to draw a person's body into the foreground because the buildings (or background stuff is in the way of the person that you are inserting into the picture. (Does that make sense?) Anyways...I will try and do those exercises you suggested. thanks!! :)

+Sylvia Catalano Then you should draw the people in front of the building first.

May I ask what kind of ink you use in your nib pens. It seems like it dries right away. It looks like you start painting as soon as you finish the drawing.

I've seen several videos (including yours) regarding drawing people at eye-level and proportionality. However, after I've finished a city-type sketch...and decide to add people to it....I seem to have a hard time drawing in the people on the sidewalks. For some reason I can't draw them in the MIDDLE of a sidewalk...whether they are standing or walking. It seems like my people can only be NEAR the wall of a building. Hope that makes sense?

+Sylvia Catalano First you have to know where your eye level intersects on other people, specifically which body part. Take a look at this example:
      c2.staticflickr.com/2/1461/25011896319_8ca0aa552d_b.jpg
My eye level intersects at people's chest area.
So every person in the sketch will have the chest level intersecting at the same height (assuming they are equally tall). There are actually two people circled in red in the sketch. I've added three more red people standing around. Their chest level all intersect at the same height, which also happens to be my eye level (I was sitting down).
Now that you have the chest level, you can draw the feet. It doesn't matter how high or low you draw the feet beneath the chest level. In this particular example, let's say from the head to chest level, that's about 1/3 height of the person. From chest level down, that's 2/3 height of the person.
Red person left: The feet is drawn far below the chest. Because you already know the chest and feet level, and that's 2/3, you should draw the 1/3 of the person to make the whole person.
Red person right: Feet is now closer to the chest, hence the head is also closer
Maybe I'll make a video of this in the future.
