- James May’s had his Tesla Model S for more than a year, so he’s had plenty of time to fall in love with it. But it’s not perfect - so join May in his bunker for a rundown of his dislikes in proper UA-camr style. He’ll probably be asking what colour to wrap it next…

Hey James. I work for Tesla and I can help!
2: The door handles will come out automatically if you have Walk Away Door Lock on. When you walk away the door locks. When you walk back in range it will unlocks and door handles will present themselves.
3: when you get out of the car you could leave your door open and the car stays on. But when you sit down, push the brake pedal the car turns on and you can put the car in drive. It’s very quick.
4: you don’t have to push the trunk close button if that sound will wake up your neighbors. You can just manually pull the trunk down and close it. Then it will not make that audible Beep sound.
Kit F I guessed those and I’ve never been in a Tesla, it’s just old man moaning I’m afraid 🤣 comes to us all.
Yeah, It seems more like he has no clue how the car works. It´s like looking at my parents and their computers.
What about the clunky sounds Mr. Tesla ?
On point 3: In the UK it rains a lot; he may want to shut the door to keep the water from getting in if it is going to take him half a minute to open/close a gate.

So the reason why car going asleep - turn off “energy saving” option and turn on always connected, about the key and clicking twice turn on “passive entry” also because of that your door handles will present :)
You could put in READ ME JAMES at the top, so that he May see it...
Same for the ‘auto present doorhandles’ option.

Unfortunately, the price reflects the current prototype state, and implies that ones with a lower carbon footprint may be coming later. I just hope they start making efficient electric cars soon.

I’ve reported the exact same “clunking” from the suspension to Tesla. If you drive with windows down it’s very noticeable over uneven surfaces. They road tested my Model X And several others which all did it. They narrowed it down to the “brake pad heat shields”, they removed and retested and noise was gone. I pulled them up on this as asked if they meant brake disc heat shield but they said brake pad shields? Do your thing Mr May and investigate further and put me out my misery.
Take the wheel off and have a look yourself?

It’s a Tesla, their not known for build quality
There's usually a thin plate between the pad and the caliper. Often rubber painted to reduce the risk of brake squeal. Doubt they do much against heat though.
If you are hearing a 'clunk' in your rear drive-shaft, make a service appointment with Tesla.. It is more than an annoyance, it is a sign of imminent motor failure. They should offer to replace your unit under warranty.

The more you have from a list of single pane windows, thin stone walls, wooden gates, creaking old floors, fireplace, plumbing that makes haunting sounds and lead shingles, the higher you are in the society.

Solution for the rear “clunk”: Halfshafts - Lubricate at Hubs LH/RH. Easy fix and for those who are out of warranty it will cost you around £100 at a Tesla service center. Had mine fixed last week here in the Netherlands.

The suspension is a known failure point on the model S. You can google it. It's known in the Tesla community as 'whompy wheels'

My 2016 Passat estate makes the noise when I close/open it remotely from the key, considering one might nlt always be in visible range when I do so. But when I manually open it by pushing the VW mark or the button close it, it doesn't make the noise.
Totally agree with the choice of the font at the back. It really has this western comedy book style vibe to it.

Newer Model S doesn't have that badging anymore, just Dual Motor or Dual Motor with the underline for performance. For car turning off - don't fully close your door when you go about to open the gate, the car won't turn off.

I've got the MS90D (2017) and I also have a noise from the suspension, exactly as James states it sounds like a worn bush or a non-tight bolt in the suspension. Just last week I've also started to get a noise from the front suspension/wheels. When turning right around e.g. around a roundabout, there's a whoosh, whoosh type noise when the tyre rotates, as if something is rubbing on the tyre / suspension / calipers. It's going into the service centre next week to be looked at.

Yeah. Make cars heavier with useless stuff but complain about fuel consumption and emissions.
Add lightness instead - that brings fun and saves fuel. Also ban (S)uper (U)seless (V)ehicles.
I usually like James May, but if his criticism is "my car doesn't stay on long enough when I'm not driving it", that's user error.
Calling it now: James Mode to control the boot beep volume ... similar to Joe Mode that lowers the volume of alerts & prompts inside the car :)

The lettering? For easy identification in the case of an emergency. It's the same on almost any vehicle.
The door handles? So that they don't pop in and out all the time when walking around the car and not wanting to get in it.
Why it turns off? Every bit it saves on energy helps the environment.
The boot sound? Because you can press that button by a mistake, when you have your head in the boot.
And so, Mr. May, most of your criticisms have a perfectly valid answer.

What I really don’t like about Tesla is the lack of buttons. Most annoying being that there isn’t a stick to determine the speed of the windscreen wipers. I get it, Tesla wants you to use the automatic mode for the windscreen wipers. But sometimes the automatic mode just doesn’t work for me. For instance when it turns on when it doesn’t rain or when the rain sensor is to aggresive when it doesn’t rain that hard. I just want to be able to adjust it very quickly without having to do that on the touchscreen.
Why did I fully expect James to pronounce it as “Tesler” and why am I disappointed that he didn’t?

Another problem with the doors is that if something goes wrong with the battery, you can't get out, and that goes from annoying to lethal if the "something wrong" is the battery catching fire. Powered doors do have a place in terms of accessibility, but they should always be able to be open manually as well.
The "Model" S and "100D" are actually in new times Roman which is a bit odd how they couldn't keep their cool Tesla logo font on the whole car.

A professional stylist attempting to make James May look genuinely fashionable would leave the dressing room in tears within 30 minutes. It'd be like telling a hairdresser to style a bald man.
If you think the alarm noise on the boot is annoying, try out some of the new electric cars especially by Kia and Hyundai, they have very load alarms when reversing! Something needs to be done about all these loud fake reversing alarms as I can see them being a huge problem in communities in the future. Also becoming a problem on commercial vehicles especially supermarket and online retailers vehicles.
Might as well just title it “James May is a grumpy old man”. Fair enough; so am I.
Is the trim OK then? I've seen several other channels mention the quality of the fit and finish in the car interior is lacking considering the price they charge you for one.
Apparently that was pervasive with the Model 3 during initial production. Model S, after initial production teething problems, hasn't shown similar issues.
Every model they come out with have problems initially but his is a Model S so all that fit and finish stuff was ironed out years ago. Right now its the Model Y, since it just came out, that has problems.
