The song is about a time when cars were outlawed and for him to even be driving it was a crime. He was seen by the police and a chase ensued and he lost them. The song is WAY deeper than it appears.

As far as I can tell listen to the song since I was a kid he's driving for no other reason than the fact that he's driving. Being chased by the authorities was the fun part that's why he's out there kind of a straight up middle finger.

I’ll tell you one thing about Rush. I saw them back in 1986. I travelled from rural Massachusetts, in the middle of a blizzard, to see them in Worcester. They showed up, the audience showed up, and a great show was experienced by everyone. They are, and were, total professionals.

I recommend (from the same album as Red Barchetta...next song) YYZ. The letters YYZ represent the Toronto airport identification code that you would see on your luggage tag. The opening of the song is Morse code for the letters YYZ. Listen to the studio version then once you "get it" (it is an instrumental), watch Rush in Rio live version and listen to 60,000 Brazilians singing to the instrumental. You will start to understand who these guys are and why their fans are so appreciative of the gift of their music.

Doing some Rush binging and came upon this video. Just in the mood for some Alex Lifeson guitar. I didn't even realize I was subscribed to you, sorry, lol. But we are RUSH friends, COOL!! :) If you'd let a 57 yr old Canadian Rush fan suggest a few Rush songs for you, I'd like to take you out of the 80's and time travel backwards to the 70's, the decade that made me a Rush fan. The decade they built their fanbase. Kids like me buying those 1st "albums" with our allowance. And in the beginning there was Rush......
When Rush was "Indicted" into the Rock & Roll Hall in 2013, it was by Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters. The album that Grohl said impacted him the most was the song and album, 2112, which came out in 1976. I suggest you watch the whole Induction and performance after. They also performed part one of 2112, "Overture" to open for Rush's performance after their speeches. I'm 57 and STILL say you have not truly experienced Rush until you have put on headphones, smoked a fatty, kicked back and listened to 2112. It is a 20+ minute "song", broken into 7 parts. Basically it is a "Concept album", rolled into one song. "We have assumed control" is narrated by Neil Peart (RIP) I HIGHLY suggest the Lyric Video as it is in comic book format and really explains the story well: ua-cam.com/video/w5jwxrTqoEA/v-deo.html
Before 2112 there was the album, Caress of Steel. It came out in 1975. It was the album that almost ended their record contract. It was misunderstood by some Rush fans and none of the songs were Radio friendly. But true fans know that this has some of their best work. And in the words of Neil Peart: “We’d never have made 2112 unless we’d made Caress Of Steel,” Neil Peart told Prog over lunch in Laurel Canyon as the band were mixing down their last studio album (and one that embraced their conceptual bent with glee), 2012’s Clockwork Angels. “You only have to listen to that and then go listen to 2112 to see what we were trying to do and then how we did it - that seems so obvious to me.”
"The Necromancer" exemplifies that perfectly. One of my top 5 Rush favorites. Another "concept song", just a little shorter than 2112. The voice doing the narration is Neil Peart (RIP) ua-cam.com/video/JphWi_GOIao/v-deo.html
The first album that featured Neil Peart was called Fly By Night. And man what a change in lyrics from their 1st album, self titled RUSH, with original drummer, John Rutsey (RIP). We went from being a "Working Man" , "Finding My Way, to being wizards fighting demons!! I was 13 in '75 and heard my 1st Rush. It was their original album. Then Fly By Night came out and I was WOW!!
Before Dungeons and Dragons there was Rush. and "By Tor and the Snow Dog". Neil Peart's and Rush's 1st "Concept Song": ua-cam.com/video/a1vlx2a_aDE/v-deo.html
And in 1974, the beginning, there was the self titled album, RUSH. Only it was John Rutsey (RIP) on drums. But he did not want to do long tours or to write lyrics. I personally think he became overwhelmed. He became introverted. He also had type II diabetes and was insulin dependent. By the time Rush did their North American tour in support of the album, it was actually Neil playing the drums. John is gone. But not forgotten. The biggest hit on the album is the original, 1974 version of " Working Man". Some real Alex Lifeson shredding skills at work. Though to be true, its also an album of deep cuts. I also like Finding My Way and What are You Doing. But anyway, I give you one of the most rockin Rush songs you will listen to: ua-cam.com/video/ndjCXG_c9kk/v-deo.html
And greetings from the North, New Brunswick, Canada.

    it means little boat

There are literally TONS of rock music about cars. Even old Robert Johnson did Terraplane Blues. I can't think of a band that hasn't done a song about a car or is car-adjacent, either driving, driving fast, driving drunk, driving stoned, or talking about a girl in car terms, loving and/or hating them.
