How Google And Gmail Dominated Consumer Email

- When Gmail was released to the public on April 1, 2004, many people thought it was a prank. Gmail offered one gigabyte of storage and robust email search. These features, among others, have helped to make Gmail the most used email service in the world with 1.5 billion users.
Gmail has come a long way since its inception. It stands as the most dominant online email service with more than 1.5 billion global active users. It has gone from a small experiment to an important piece of Google's G Suite lineup. But the road to the top hasn't been without a few bumps, including a rocky start.
By the time Google started working on the service in 1999, Yahoo Mail already had 12 million active users and Microsoft's Hotmail had about 30 million.
Paul Buchheit, who was employee No. 23 at Google, fought for the online email service, but executives didn't understand how a search company could benefit from online email. Some executives pushed back at the time, according to multiple reports. Buchheit created the service as a "20%" project, which is an informal program Google has sometimes offered employees to work on projects of their choosing.
When Gmail actually launched, people thought it was a joke -- literally. Becaase it was announced on April Fool's Day 2004, people wondered whether the company was pulling one over them. But once users realized it was real, it became one of a number of free email services alongside Microsoft's Hotmail and Yahoo Mail, which were some of the first to introduce web-based email in the 1990s.
Monetizing Gmail has been a point of contention within the company. Some people argued that in order for Gmail to have the most reach, it needed to be supported by advertising, rather than user subscription fees. The ad model won out but, even before it launched to the general public in 2007, Google got heat for scanning Gmail emails and using the contents for targeted advertising.
The company drew scrutiny again in 2018 after Google admitted to allowing app developers scan Gmail accounts for ad targeting. It would come up again through 2019 as Congress grilled Google alongside other tech companies over privacy. Over the summer, the company admitted to keeping a list of items users purchase using Gmail.
Even though the email service didn't start doing exceedingly well compared to competition until 2012, it continues to innovate. The company still aggressively targets both consumer and enterprise users. It also continues to add innovative new features such as Smart Compose, which uses artificial intelligence to predict responses.

How Google And Gmail Dominated Consumer Email
Google is just really good at removing spam.
Exactly
Because its them lol
They are so good that even my youtube notifications go into my spam
I agree. Outlook is absolutely terrible 😠
@@maxinef6654 Before I switched my personal email to Outlook years ago, I used to get about 5,000 spams a day. now I get like 1,000.
Google made it mandatory to have a Gmail account to sign into UA-cam. Game changer...
When was this? I don't have a Gmail account . . .
L'aviateur de TRPG, most likely the time Google tried to be Facebook with their G+ social media system, but they've failed miserably. Before and after that (I came to Gmail as soon as it was widely available and I don't think Google even owned YT back then) Gmail wasn't required on a YT account.
Wrong. You don't need a Gmail account for YT, you just need a Google Account.
I have a MS account using my Gmail, but I don't have a Hotmail account.
You need a Google account, not a Gmail account. You can use any email.
Locutus I just saw your comment
Im addicted to these videos. Informative, not too long, not too serious, no discussion panels and interviews. Good for y'all CNBC.
Gmail organized my email from important to ads and social media.
Yeah, that's great. Now if I could only get it to auto-organize other emails.

We all must admit Google made our life easier and comfortable.
Yes, but at what cost down the road? Freedom of Speech is under attack at UA-cam, and the PC police are draconian in their judgements of what is proper etiquette for peoples channels.
Look up Big Brother for reference material.

Exactly, google microsoft computer support and those damn Indian scammers websites pop up first... they've infiltrated google and somehow make it to the top of the search.

I'm proud to say I created my gmail account 1 week after it was launched :-) feels good to be able to say I was an early adopter :-)
I have been using Gmail since it released. One thing I like this is that Google has always improving it and it is the most easy web mail to send email.
I think what made gmail so popular is just the integration with other google services. I remember I had a hotmail email and started using google docs to edit documents in realtime with other users. I ended up having 2 emails but slowly merged over to gmail because I was using it for all these services + email and hotmail was just an email.
Tbf, Outlook is better for work. And those hundred millions of users are probably employees from corporations.
But outside work, I use Gmail..
And college!
I use both
You need to have a gmail account to use the playstore and other services on android... that's why it has so many users...
No. You need a Google Account, which can be created using a phone number (which is a bad idea) and an existing email address.
Google account can be tied with yahoo or hotmail. Not neccessarily gmail
No need of that in iPhone tho
Just getting addicted to these kinda videos from CNBC.. just too good .. keep it up CNBC.

Remember when push notifications for emails wasn't a thing and you actively had to check your inbox regularly?
The first thing I do is turn off email push and all notifications.
I like to check my email manually not get dinged every five seconds by Spam.
CNBC don't have the balls to change the roles of Gmail and Hotmail.....wait oh yes they don't have them....😂😂
@paula I am pretty sure you got what I wanted to convey.
I was a sophomore in high school in March 2005 when a friend of mine whose dad worked at Google sent me an invitation for Gmail. Only like 3 of us in school had it but our teachers would email us homework. And we would email each other. I still use this gmail today and it fun to look up at the photos and other things we would share back in high school.
Google "Alphabet" is an advertising company. I am not quite sure why anyone would trust their important information with them.
Microsoft on the other hand is a business company, protecting privacy is their business.
I was one of the guys who brought a Gmail invite in the very early days, great $10 spend. But not being able to delete at the start was a real problem, as I get a lot of newsletters.
I've been using Gmail/Google Drive/Google Business Suite for ages and I can't imagine replacing it for anything since there isn't anything that comes even close to its quality and functionality.
The new videos you guys are making are grrr great, keep it up.
0:31 she doesnt even have a watch dammit
She does actually, but it's under her shirt sleeve! (if you look closely). You can also see it at 0:36.
It's all thanks to the Android platform. If Android wasn’t my operating system than I might not have a Google Account. Android operating system gives Google the monopoly over search and other Google account based business. Btw I am not at all complaining about Google’s monopoly. Google has done a fantastic job of making information easier to collect and share.
I remember you needed an invite to open up a gmail. Good times.
My company has just migrated to Gsuite and it's awesome. It feels like I can access my work desktop whenever and wherever I want through my android device. Very convenient especially at those times you're out of office.

Wow, Gmail and Hotmail personified! Seriously, Gmail made it easy for us to send and keep track of our e-mails every time.
"It wasn't quite clear how Google can benefit from an online email-service, when it was a search company."
Isn't that pretty much the case for EVERYTHING that google does?
To this day, pretty much the only thing they make actual money off is their search-service ads.
They money maker is User Data that they sell to Advertisers (Google Ads, etc)
The only reason I have Gmail is that Google forced me to get a Google account. End of story.
So what Email service would you have otherwise?
@@lopezlion3164 you will be surprised to find out how many of them out there and some of them older than Google itself.
@@maxant4285 Can you give us some good examples for people, whose use-case is registering at important websites with that e-mail (and not a secret encrypted communication)? That is, the password recovery has to be safe from attacks, it doesn't get deleted if you never log in via web interface, and doesn't force a spam filter on you, you are guaranteed never to lose the e-mail if the freemail company goes bankrupt (otherwise you won't ever recover your accounts), has a proper security... And other conditions that noone talks about.
I don't know, it's true that a financial incentive should make it more likely they'll take care of you, but the company doesn't seem that large or old, they "make no guarantees about the continual availability of all services", and as usually, if they decide to accuse you of breaking ANY arbitrary rules, which includes German laws, whatever would they be tomorrow, "the account can be blocked by Posteo without notice". There's also the implicit risk of forgetting to pay, e.g. if your circumstances of life change, and for whatever reason you won't manage to keep track of this invoice. Anyway, there are many other paid providers that are at least just as good in my opinion, but noone prioritizes what I mentioned above.
@@scscyou protonmail.
Fun fact: If you actually were one of the first thousand or so Gmail users, you actually got extra gigabytes, which is still carried on today with the current amount of space.
This proves what many people already know. Vast majority of people don’t care about their data privacy as long as they can get a good “free” product. In other words, they happily buy the product with their data.
I have a Gmail and Outlook account. Best of both worlds.
I was in the Gmail Beta invite, and I never Looked back! Anyone remember Google 🌊?.. pepperidge Farm remembers!

My fellow forumers invited me. I liked it a lot. I use mine as a secondary email.
I have multiple Gmail accounts myself.
I remember avoiding Gmail until it got past the invite stage. I didn't see the need to work at it like I would to get a scarce product.
I'm using Gmail for many years, but I still login sometimes to my 1999 hotmail account, just out of nostalgia.

@tommy aronson - No it's not.
@tommy aronson I have no idea what I did to deserve that! Very uncalled for.
You're not aware about the leakage of Yahoo's mail passwords?
One thing to realize is that Bill Gates suggested to start charging for emails, about 1 cent per email, due to dominance of Hotmail - even though they offered pesky storage options by default, like 5-10MB vs Gmail's outstanding 1GB Option which was being offered FOR FREE. Google saved email communication to remain free.
At first i thought gmail was the only email...... and i never knew gmail and email was different as there can be no other email services that time....
So many ppl have it because Google requires that u have it, lool
I basically have all the google apps on my iPhone I love them all- they make everything so simple and I feel like I can trust them with personal info. I even feel like switching to the Pixel phone that’s how much I like Google...

I remember when I was using yahoo mail back in the early 2000s. I have to be mindful of the file size that I sent via email as it will quickly hit the storage limit and force me to pay the premium. Then gmail came along changes everything.
Hotmail FTW. Screw Gmail
Kinda overlook my google account as it is part of my daily life.
I started with yahoo mail in 2004 then switched to gmail in 2008 due to the fact that I had excessive spam in my yahoo inbox
I've had GMail since early 2005. I got my invite from an online friend I met through a Symbian OS enthusiast forum.
I love Google.
I love GMail.
Gmail is hot
I would check her inbox
Remember the time when CNBC & Business Insider had the same amount of subscribers.
I use AOL but I use the Outlook desktop program to read my mail and manage my tasks and calendar.
Gmail has the best SPAMfilter. For me that is the winning feature
Who cares where you hoard your spam?
Gmail makes the first choice for setting up your personal Email account, but when it comes to work Email Outlook should be a better solution.
One thing I find Outlook better is the speed. Gmail as it’s running on browsers requires internet connection to open and can load quite slow when there’s connection issue or no loading at all when network’s down. Outlook on the other hand can run on its own app in Window which opens and loads faster. You can re-open received Emails even when you’re offline. Corporate clients love them
Hotmail became outlook, i didn't knew that.
0:50 Gmail is goodlooking🤪
it is.
