Hey Nizzahon - wouldn't it be a sweet addition, if - before you do your research - you ask yourself what cards you expect on the list and add a small section on the start of the video where you go through your tips? I bet a lot of viewers naturally ask themselves this question too, at least I do. It enhances the thrill of the reveal ;)
Mutagenic Growth... Good enough for second place on this list, but only managed ninth place on the Phyrexian Mana list. That tells you how overpowered Phyrexian Mana is.
I would love to see a split card called "The Quick" and "The Dead". Red side gives haste and maybe a plus. Black side would either destroy or create a zombie at instant speed.
1R: The quick: Target creature you control gains +2/+0, haste and trample. Sacrifice it at the beginning of the next end step. 1B: The dead (aftermath): As an additional cost to cast this spell, exile a creature card from your graveyard. Create a token that's a copy of target creature in your graveyard, except it is a 2/2 black zombie in addition to its other types.
You actually forgot the big reason Giant Growth saw play back then, and why it stopped. See, 1999 was its last big year, because that year we got Sixth Edition, and Sixth Edition brought a massive change in the rules of the game, including completely eradicating Batch timing and stopping the manner in which creature death happened. To put it bluntly, things used to favor cards like Giant Growth, because you could cast it on your Birds Of Paradise, have your opponent then respond with a Bolt, and have the birds LIVE because technically when everything resolved it had 4 toughness. This made it much less risky as a card, as while you still lose to Terror and Swords, burn removal could essentially always be stopped if you had G, and it could be stopped preemptively.
Won quite a few games with Become Immense. It works really well if you delve cast it on Rakshasa Vizier, which essentially gives it +11/+11 for only one Mana.
That's not the only error. #2 has the PT, GP, and total score count of #1, in spite of the format scores only adding up to 32 points (instead of 48, like #1).
I doubt it actually. The main creature based green decks where BG/sultai contrictor and Temur energy. Both those decks either had value creatures that didn't really care if they died (like rogue refiner) so they were not worth protecting, creatures that protected themselves like Bristling Hydra or creatures with haste like glorybringer. Removal was just not as effective against these decks so you didn't need to pack a lot of cards against it. Sweepers and counterspell were more of an issue so cards like negate (and at one point even spell pierce I think) were the go to anti control cards.
I really didn't think of the number 1 card as a burn spell at all. Modal cards make that difficult, but I almost feel like we should rank them based on what mode is typically used on the card. For instance, you wouldn't really think of Azorious Charm as a combat trick because it can give your creatures life link. You would more likely think of it as a bounce or draw spell.
I wouldn't count just lifelink as a combat trick either. I think I should have more clearly stated in my combat trick definition that it has to be something that either results in more damage or can win you combat. Indestructible and double strike do that. Lifelink, not so much.
Giving an opposing creature -x/-x can also be a combat trick, especially -x/-0, though I don't think there are too many good cards that do that, without killing creatures outright.
I feel like you should have mentioned splinter twin when talking about vines of vastwood. It was one reason why green aggro decks were somewhat viable in modern during the twin era.
phyrexian mana was only a mistake because it was done poorly. they printed a lot of free cards, and they printed it in way to make the cards castable in any color. if phyrexian mana was used for cards like moltensteel hellkite more, (4 mana despite phyrexian mana for an on rate card with a decent effect) or cards that used phyrexian mana symbols as well as normal mana symbols it could be done better. so don't say phyrexian mana was a mistake, wizards utilization of it was wrong, not the actual effect itself. and just about every effect can be used wrong. for instance, imagine if they used kicker to make a bunch of 0 mana 0/0 creatures that kicked to add counters to them, but the creatures all had bonkers effects, flash when this enters the battlefield counter target spell kick 1UU put 2 +1/+1 counters on this creature when it enters the battlefield. that is essentially how phyrexian mana got utilized. it was used backwards and it broke the game because of it.
Just started the video and seeing titan strength is giving me flash backs to when I played standard and died to things like swiftspear, street denizen, titan strength, and hammerhand... ugh.
I have just started to watch your content and I'm really enjoying it. I was wondering why you didn't add cranial plating to the list for the combat tricks and if you have thought about this card did it just not place in the top 10?
You forget something really important when talking about giant growth. The reason it was so successfull in it's early years was a deadly combo with berserk. Berserk costs 1 green mana, doubles the power of a creature and gives it trample (and you have to bury it at the end of turn). So if you let a 1/1 through, and it gets giant growth + berserk we are already talking 8 damage (and this could be done in round 2), and you could use 2 giant growth's or 2 berserk's and pretty much wreck them (first example would be 14 damage and last 16 damage if you do it with a 1/1 creature). Once berserk was no longer around giant growth lost it's combo partner, and with it a lot of effectiveness. Also how the hell did berserk not make this list ? One of the greatest combat tricks of all time
I know a better card for number 6 giant growth, I think it has 2 green mana cost and has 3 +3/+3 and trample. When I get to my cards I'll look after the exact name. Edit: the name is Predator's Strike. Link: scryfall.com/card/mrd/128/de/angriff-des-raubtiers
can we get a history video explaining why RnD fucked up the rack and black vise when they erratad it to "choose a player" whilst every other card worded the same as black vise and the rack get changed to "each player" (kismet, paupers cage, etc)
Yeah it has a ton. I didn't count it for this list because I mostly think of it as a removal spell, and that is usually how it is used -- but it can also produce nasty 2-for-1s where you use the +1/+1 counter part as a combat trick. However, I did include Boros Charm which is also only rarely used as a combat trick, so I should probably have included the command.
I didn't consider either because they aren't really "tricks" since they are permanents that are on the battlefield, thus your opponent knows you have them. Not much of a "trick" there, you know?
You need to start checking/editing and rerecording sections of your videos. Small error of saying +5/+5 for Become Immense even though it's +6, but you make these mistakes so frequently, I must urge you to rush the videos less in order to increase quality and accuracy.
I just skip the opening ad, skip to the card and read it, skip to next card and read it.. Turns a 10 minuet video into 45 seconds and I get all the same information. Also DEATHS SHADOW DEATHS SHADOW DEATHS SHADOW btw did you know that DEATHS SHADOW uses combat tricks?
Woops, sorry for the mistake at the end. You don't get to see the #1 card's information as long as you should!
Also Become Immense is +6/+6 not +5/+5
Indeed.
AN UNFORGIVABLE TRAVESTY
Nah I’m kidding, it’s there long enough for people to pause
Do you have an upload limit or something? :S
Aww no blazing shoal mention ☹️. That cards by fair the best combat trick and would top the list if it wasn't banned.
I demand an extra 40 seconds of soundless video at the end of the next video to make up for this visual transgression!
That's only fair.
I'll see what I can do.
Perfectly balanced, as all things should be

That's a top tier idea.
Agreed!
Nice!

Still amazed at how consistent and original you are with your content!
Thanks, too bad this inconsistently has like a minute of no video at the end! haha
Damn man, your production values have massively improved. Good work.
Ya know, aside from the last 40 seconds.
The video cuts out for the last 10% or so.
had no idea the boon cycle existed. thanks for teaching me!
Vines of Vastwood gives me nightmares from those infect matchups especially back when New Phyrexia was Standard playable.
I run it in my rafiq edh deck. So good
Oh! The visuals cut out at 10:10 ish

@@raynmanshorts9275 he also said become immense gave +5 +5 and not +6 +6
he did that intentionally
the visual cut i mean
How many points did Blossoming Defense get? I figured it would have racked up a ton of points in Standard.
Came here to say this. Surprised it didn’t make number 10!
I doubt it actually. The main creature based green decks where BG/sultai contrictor and Temur energy. Kit Sovereign It also sees occasional play in Modern and Legacy sideboards.
More from modern infect I would've thought :s
Same question with Dive Down
I was very surprised that berserk wasn't on this list. One green to double a creatures power and give it trample is a nasty combat trick

"Temur Battle Rage"
Looks very calm
Hahaha
I was scared that the top three would all be modal cards that technically could function as a combat trick. Happy to see that's not the case
Combat tricks aren't worth the risk. Hello, my name is infect nice to meet you!
Hello, my name is standard
Ah, but if only a fool runs combat tricks, then no one will expect them
Well i missed "Might of the Masses"
Its awesome in my Elves Deck :D
You should do a video over off color counters.
Theres like 4 of them
@@ApexZer0 if you look up on Gatherer not blue "counter target" apparently there is 49. So...
@@MrPringleson yeah that covers all cards that just happen to have those 2 words in a row. And that might cover dual color stuff like absorb

Boros Charm?
I cast 'CONSIGN TO THE PIT'

Don't forget Ash Zealot, Akron Crusader, Dragon's Mantle, and Madcap Skills!
My favorite combat trick is Ride Down, it's always useful!
I am surprised that Might of Old Krosa was not on this list.
No bloodlust? Loved that card.
You say +5/+5 when you're talking about become immense, when become immense says +6/+6
Sure do.
Clearly Needsahome doesn't know Magic
I have just started to watch your content and I'm really enjoying it. I was wondering why you didn't add cranial plating to the list for the combat tricks and if you have thought about this card did it just not place in the top 10?
Because it isn't a trick at all. Sure, you can movie it at instant speed for BB. But it is in play. People (should) know it is coming.
@@NizzahonMagic that's absolutely fair was interested in your opinion thanks for the reply

Berserk has 5 points.
Titan's Strength is the best one mana trick in red though, right? It's a mainstay of my red modern burn/aggro budget deck.
I mean, it is on this list, so that's a safe assumption. I think Brute Strength probably has a place there too, even though it didn't make the list.
Temur Battle Rage feels like pocket Embercleave 💞
Vines on opponent's creature was quite relevant while twin was legal.
hah!
I'm pretty sure I've played Boros charm in all the formats I have been active.

@@NizzahonMagic for 1 green mana more you get trample^^, sry just saw that card again, I mistook it for a +2/+2 card
I've seen like all your videos, but I constantly rewatch them for background noise cause I like your voice
Are you excited giant growth is going to get reprinted?
Yeah should be interesting to see what happens.
Does berserker count as a combat trick? Its tecnically an instant, but at the same time its not.
how many points did Invigorate and Berserk have?
Calling Temur Battle Rage.
Dang was wrong
At 10:10 the video screen goes black but the sound still plays
Surprised Brave the elements didn't make top 10
No blossoming defense?
i'm surprised that atarka and/or dromoka command didn't make the list, Or you didn't count them for some reason?
I did count Atarka's command. But surprisingly it has only 11 points. Did not count Dromoka, because that is more removal spell than combat trick.
can we get a history video explaining why RnD fucked up the rack and black vise when they erratad it to "choose a player" whilst every other card worded the same as black vise and the rack get changed to "each player" (kismet, paupers cage, etc)
How good did blazing shoal do?
That is really weird it just cuts out
Good thing I have a Boros Charm cuz that went away really fast
Lately GDS has been giving way to WBx DS.
How did avacyn not make the list?

I think you are looking at her from behind.
YOUR VIDEO GOES DARK TWARDS THE END
Dromoka's command? putting a counter on a guy to me is close enough to a combat trick
Yeah maybe I should have included it. It is removal 90% of the time, so I didn't consider it, but Boros Charm is burn 90% of the time, so yeah.
Y u no kessig wolfrun or spellskite? Both activated abilities are used often as combat tricks?
I didn't consider either because they aren't really "tricks" since they are permanents that are on the battlefield, thus your opponent knows you have them. Not much of a "trick" there, you know?
I wonder where on this list embercleave would fall today
It isn't really a combat trick because the boost is permanent, but yeah, it is a weird card to classify.
Well, Infect shine here
Goes black at ten minutes but the end card is there at the end
End card is added later. This was probably a glitch during rendering.
I think that Snapcaster Maze is a combat trick
The rest of the video was destroyed by boros charm
I want my money back!

Don't we all?
Deflecting Palm?
not a combat trick
