Melissa did SUCH an amazing job in this scene. The raw emotion displayed here is just chilling. Also, kudos for the VFX department, they really killed it with the heat vision.
I am very much interested in Melissa's thought about doing this scene. Really there was just so much emotion here, it couldn't have been easy. (Plus if you actually watch any interviews with her it does seem like she's usually a chill, fun person IRL).
With the new information we have about her situation during season 1, it makes me wonder if Melissa was channeling any of her own real anger for this scene
this scene remains one of the most powerful/iconic scenes from Supergirl and, the entire Arrowverse, in my opinion. in this 1-minute and 29-second clip, we are made painfully aware of what Kara Zor-El has lost (her family, her way of life, her world) ... and we see how she harnesses that emotion to power her fight for good, protecting all the things she has gained (her new world, her purpose, her chosen family). I always get choked up every time i watch it.
I loveeeeeee this part and the back round music just makes UGH IIIIIII LOOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEE SUPERGIRLLLLL I WISH THEY CAN MAKE MORE SUPERGIRL EPISODES IM SOOOO SAD
This scene is incredible. The emotion displayed is so real, so palpable, that I literally cannot watch it without my eyes tearing up. The scenes of Krypton being destroyed just add to it. For me, it scores even higher because it's a CW show. This isn't where good drama is supposed to be found.
Love this scene. Must of seen it 80 times the least. Emotional if you know the background story. And can relate. The scene with the space ship has the same affect too
You know looking back at this scene now with what we know about her ex and everything it makes me wonder how much of that pure rage and anger everyone accredited to “good acting” was Melissa channeling her own real emotions about her situation
You have an excellent point. F that guy, by the way. Regardless, she’s a great actor, but I’m sure she was channeling real rage in this scene. I’m so glad she let that abuse.
If I remember correctly, just one of the first shows to do Superman's heat vision, right... The way her face heats up with prolonged use and the way the heat fades out after she stops.
Still one of my absolute favourite scenes in the series. The emotion! I felt the catharsis along with her of releasing her pent-up emotions. I really wish we'd get another moment like this.
Evryone's talking about heat vision and tremendous amount of emotion but no one is talking about the soundtrack!! Comon !!! It's the soundtrak making scene so much stronger!
That's why shes the best actor for this character bc she takes it all very real and her acting is very impressive idk how any other actor could've pulled a scene off like this
Whenever someone talks shit about Supergirl, saying “Oh the CGI sucks!” or “The writing is awful”, I just think of this scene and I can’t take them seriously. It just becomes obvious to me that they’ve never watched the show for what it is. This scene alone perfectly encapsulates the pain and agony that Kara felt every day while leading her double-life. The torment of not only losing her family but her entire planet. Sure, the show had plenty of flaws but so does every show in the CW(Arrow being the obvious exception) as well as every show in existence. Everyone had the “Twitter Mentality” when it came to this show. They only saw the flaws and gave it no credit for ANYTHING it did right because it was “too woke”. I wish more people just watched these types of media to ENJOY them, not to criticize. This scene alone was a prime example of why the whole CW-verse had SO MUCH POTENTIAL in the beginning. Obviously it’s been falling apart lately (i.e. Superman & Lois and the cancellation of Legend’s and Flash) but those early days were truly golden and were honestly on par with the MCU in my opinion. This scene still remains one of the greatest scenes in the Arrowverse and one of my top favorites in television altogether. Melissa Benoist truly shined in this and I wish she got the proper credit for the badass acting she could perform. The biggest regret I have for this show was the lack of completing the MOST OBVIOUS SHIP EVER!!!! Kara x Lena!! A perfect friends to enemies to lovers story arc ruined lol!! Beyond that, this show will truly stick with me forever. Not because it was the best series ever, but because it was so severely underrated and WAY too harshly criticized.
Everytime I watch this scene I can feel what she going through the story line was on point and the flashbacks they used for you to understand her emotions excellent do great in TV but DC your movies suuuuuuck Great job Melissa no one can replace you as SuperGirl hands down you stole that role 👏
Go out there and do some good! The real heroes aren't the superpowered ones, they're the ordinary ones changing lives and touching someone's heart with tenderness and kindness! "Charity Never Faileth"
To me easily the best female superhero moment ever to date, the closest thing to it has been Wonder Woman in a major million-dollar production as opposed to a TV show, in a let it all out moment, don't hold anything back effort, everyone else should be aspiring to this level of commitment, you can believe that she's trying absolutely as hard as she can, no doubt, sound editing, effects (for her) and sparking the imagination of superpowers, A++
@@miochii He abused her. She went on, I believe, Jimmy Fallon & claimed her under eye injury came from falling on a flower pot, but really, her ex threw something at her face. He'd put bruises on her arm before, too, while filming season 1 of Supergirl, being that he was actively abusive during the early days of the show before meeting Christopher Woods.
@@xiamariansupreme72 omg that's horrible... she didn't deserve any of this, no woman deserves being treated like this by these sick men... I'm glad they broke up and she's probably better now!

Although this show has amazing visuals, I would like to point one thing out: I enjoyed the Pilot episode's heat vision effect a bit more. Specifically how her eyes depowered. The glow remained in her pupils for a second or two, which is a minor detail they removed / forgot, literally after the first episode. But man. Did it look pretty cool. It's the small things that matter! I mean, going from normal eyes to heat vision in less than half a second isn't bad, i'm just saying that the pupil powering up and depowering would really add more to the effect. Kinda like Superman did in the Injustice 2 Reveal / Official Videogame Trailer. For a moment, Superman's pupils glow in a dark hallway / building. Now that's freaking chilling - spine chilling. Wish they'd just bring back that tiny effect. Seriously... Go back and watch the pilot episode. After she destroys that guy's axe... Look at her pupils. They depower. Just amazing! Sure, you might say you can't see her pupils when they glow that bright and hot. You may even say yeah, they glow up and down as seen @ 1:08. But those aren't really her pupils... you can't see her pupils. That's just the entire eye. The pupil is where the energy beam is coming from. That should still glow even after she stops firing. Before too. But yeah. That effect can only be seen in the first episode. Every other episode is just all strsight to the glowy eyes. No transition from off to on. Just a light switch I guess. Now, I'm not hating on this. This is awesome. Just saying that should add that feature back. Because it would help sell the illusion better. Give Supergirl a more detail and sense of power. Dunno about you guys but actually seeing the pupil glow first would show me the power of a Kryponian God better than if the entire eye glowing. Sense of power and strength. A sense of fear. Something that would kill me in less than a second if I so happened to look at them the wrong way. Edit: Yeah, I get it. Not just the pupil glowing. I get it - if they're getting ready to fire, the entire eye will glow, but at least show the pupil glow first and then the entire eye. This way you can see the transition. Same with depowering. Pupils glow first then the entire eye. And vice versa when stopping.
Whenever I see scenes like this, I wonder what it would be like to back to the 1980's with the equipment necessary to show this show in movie theaters in full HD and sound.
Why didn't they save such am awesome and bone chilling heat vision scene for the defeat of a true end villain. It would have been a better use in my opinion but this was still epic as hell
Melissa Benoist captured Supergirl's character so perfectly, this scene is absolutely awesome. Too bad Season 4 didn't have impactful moments like this
A truly emotionally impactful scene. Such a shame that the show was rarely able to reach these heights again and that the antagonist she faced off against was a dime store Power Rangers villain. Melissa Benoist was a fantastic Supergirl, probably the best to date but was so horribly let down by poor scripts, ridiculous villains, a bloated cast, and drowning in unnecessary identity politics that just dragged the show down to the point that it became a joke. She truly deserved better.
If you think about it, she could only really do this amazing with Red Tornado as a bad guy. Because the show would definitely not have Supergirl use her full powered heat vision on an actually being. She had a rare opportunity to let her full anger come out and destroy something that wasn’t technically alive, this actually builds her character too as she sees that she cant use that power against humans or aliens for fear of killing them
For my supergirl have the most sad superhero history! They planet and all family was destroy when she was a child and she have to go another earth to save her life 😭💔
Even though Melissa is acting, it feels so real. Actual emotion, actual pain. I find this an amazing scene that I can just keep rewatching.
