    I *love* the build-up to Owen, where he staggers up to the witness stand in a kinda creepy way, and slowly lifts up his head... and then any notion of Owen being the killer goes out the window when we see that sad yet adorable face!

    It's been speculated that Uendo, Patches, and Kisegawa aren't actually that lightweight, rather that the taste of alcohol is a black-out trigger for them due to some kind of past trauma, as is common with people who have DID

  • @armadillorider

    I do like that the importance of Uendo's hair in determining which of the personalities is in control is still prominent in the transition to Owen. When the other three personalities got drunk, the fans holding together the ponytail fell out one by one as each of the other three personalities lost consciousness before becoming completely undone for Owen's position. It's been a great attention to detail.

    Uendo's DID is why I really like the case, nobody treats him or his headmates like an insane person or makes shitty jokes about it; and of course, twisting the old tired trope of "scary secret personality" into an innocent child who witnessed something scary is the best way to kill the rest of the "crazy person with multiple personalities is the killer" stories
    I don't have DID but a few of my friends do, and yeah some headmates can have perceived younger ages; it's really good how a lot of what's showcased here is more or less accurate, i wonder if one of the writers had a friend like that and wanted to showcase a more accurate portrayal

  • @TheRealChristopherB
    @TheRealChristopherB Місяць тому +172

    Who would’ve guessed that Ace Attorney, the franchise that thrives on eccentric characters and dramatic twists would genuinely have one of the most accurate depictions of Dissociative Identity Disorder in fiction?
    Child Alters (at least from what I’ve read), are one of the most common types of identities you may see in someone with DID. And Owen is a spot-on depiction of that. Way more accurate than an Hidden Evil Mastermind would be, at least.
    Kudos to the writers for ACTUALLY doing their research and writing Uendo with the true aspects of DID in mind, rather than embellishing it for the sake of the drama. Makes someone as wacky as Uendo feel pretty grounded.

    • @TheMaleLynn
      @TheMaleLynn Місяць тому +29

      I also read (just read), that the other alters tend to be very protective of an original child alter.
      And my theory assomeone uninformed in psychology is, that Owen developed DID as a child as some sort of self protection against... trauma or abuse. And that his biggest joy an hobby was rakugo, because the 3 developed alters all seem to be some sort of a rakugo character stereotype (the straight man, the happy pun-throwing jester and the tough no-nonsense girl).

    Owen being a child has to be a great twist.

      Uendo being a lightweight when it comes to alcohol is theorized to be because alcohol was involved in the trauma that caused the DID system to appear. This would explain why Owen isn't drunk himself despite him inhabiting the same alcohol consuming system as the other 3 alters we've seen. A theory that does diminish the funny factor by a bit.

    It's hilarious how Athena entered this sequence where she keeps digging up evidence that progressively makes Bucky look worse and worse.
    "Owen might have done it" uhhhh oops, Owen is just a child.
    "The killer had a cut on his head" big oops, Bucky has a cut on his head.
    "The killer used soba dough to asphyxiate the victim and then turned it into noodles" massive oops, only Bucky knows how to do that.

    3:35 Hell yeah, that is my favorite twist of this case! Mostly because of that masterful subversion of expectations.
    I guess most players at this part expected this 'Owen' to be some part of confrontational ruffian. Like Wocky Kitaki or Furio Tigre.
    For once because the other personalities wanted to hide him that much, making it seem like they thought he actually did it.
    But also, because it would be the usual trope of a 'hidden different personality' in stories: An evil ,dangerous counterpart (Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for example)
    And the writers play into it, in how he slowly rises up from the whitness stand (2:48), hands pinching into the wood, ready to angrily lash out against everyone (2:53).... just to slump down to this small harmless frame and revealing a cute, meek face (2:58). And that he is a 5year old boy! Catching everyone by surprise.
    Gotcha good!^^

    The moment where Simon grabs Athena and shakes her stood out to me in this case for more than just the immedieate problem of her losing her resolve. If you think about it, Simon spent YEARS in prison faced with the death penalty for a crime he didn't committ, with a lot of circumstantial evidence against him. Bucky is in the same situation right now, with no one in his court but Athena. Athena spent her childhood trying to overcome her trauma to come to Simon's defense as a defense attourney, I'd imagine Simon would take it a bit personal when Athena lets her faith waiver over a handful of convenient details.
    If she could defend him against all odds, she should not be so weak as to risk leaving Bucky to take the fall. Of course he has to be tsundere about it, but Simon knows that Athena can do better.

    So now we finally get to meet Owen, after all this buildup of him being the potential true culprit…and he’s only 5 years old. I don’t think anyone saw that coming. Having to get testimony from such a young witness who saw something so horrible is delicate business, but going back again to the question of what Uendo went through to develop DID, if Owen is only 5, then hoo boy…
    And things aren’t looking better for Bucky, either, with the new information that Taifu’s killer was bleeding from a cut on their head. Good timing, and rather surprising in how suddenly it came, on Simon’s part giving Athena a ‘pull yourself together’ speech. Simon may be brusque in his demeanor, but he cares about the people who matter most to him, and doesn’t want Athena to lose faith in Bucky.

    8:00 - This is just like what religious folks IRL say when new scientific theories are raised: "Oh, look how quick your story changes when new evidence comes out!" Yeah, that's the point. A new theory that fits the evidence is far more reasonable than sticking to the same theory that makes no sense with the new evidence presented.

    • @MSCDonkeyKong
      @MSCDonkeyKong 21 день тому

      Depends in what scenario they're saying it in. If they're saying it whenever literally any new scientific theory is raised, then yeah that's dumb.
      I think it's valid when it's brought up in an argument about faith, considering that I see a lot of people act like believing in science means that they aren't living lives based on faith. Which isn't what science is. Unless these people are actually doing every scientific discovery themselves without taking anybody else's word for it, don't put credence to anything theoretical, and literally all of the conclusions they realize don't end up being overturned in a few years, then maybe I'll believe that. But that's not how anybody realistic actually treats science, because that's not a realistic way to live, since a lot of science is theory and not every idea is accepted by all scientists.
      Both of them are putting faith in their own answers to the unknown, just from different places. And science changes its understanding more, but it also derives meaning from finding your own answers on interpreting things we can't know. Religion just happens to be one of those answers.
      Some people would argue that science makes religion obselete, but that's more like putting faith in the idea that science will someday do that.
      It's had a pretty hard time at it currently when the objective observation of our surroundings has to include things like "deathbed phenomena" (look it up on wikipedia), or archeological discoveries that line up with the Bible's timeline of events. Stuff like Tel Dan Stele proving King David existed, or modern archeology's entire understanding around the Hittites being predated by the Bible and later supported with findings of evidence.
      If one day science actually did just hard deconfirm all religion and erase all unanswered questions from life, I think that'd take away free will, since I think the fact that we choose what to make of our environments is what gives us that kind of choice.
      I think the fact we have that room to change our story allows life to have meaning. Religion nor science as they are now really take away from that meaning since they're just different answers.

      UN Owen Was Her? is the name of the theme for one of Touhou's bosses, Flandre Scarlet. Even for someone who's never played a Touhou game, I've come to recognize the song's' iconic status for it's widespread use in covers (like those from RichaadEB and The8BitDrummer) and in YTPMV/MADS (Like Ronald McDonald Insanity, and Muscular Wonders - Terry Crews' Greatest Hits).
      It's a pretty good track imo, highly recommend you check it, or any of the covers, out for a listen.

    As cute as Owen is, I’m wondering what the heck kind of trauma this guy went through to end up with 3 other personalities. I’m assuming that Owen is the base personality and not Uendo, but someone correct me if I’m wrong

That the system was beforehand, but there's n-not really a "base" personality for a lot of systems. There's u-uh, a host alter, which may b-be the "main fronter", but it's s-sorta more seen that um, aspects that didn't fuse together i-in childhood grew into their o-own parts. 16:10 Honestly? Children usually ARE honest when there's no obvious reason that lying would be beneficial to them. The problem is children's *perceptions of reality* can be different than adult's and so it can be hard to interpret things they say. A lot of children say they're scared of a monster under their bed or in their closet, but even though we as adults know monsters aren't real, that doesn't mean their *fear* isn't real

    You can take the game out of Japan, but you can't take Japan out of the game, and in this franchise, there's always that one trial that makes me wonder how the localization team managed to pull it off. I do not envy the translators who worked on this trial one bit.
