Justin Herbert Would Have Won A Super Bowl If He Was The QB Of Philip River's 2006 Chargers Team

  • The Chargers should have went all the way in 2006 with arguably the most talented team in franchise history, but they had an epic collapse against the Patriots. Philip Rivers was in his first year starting and it wasn't his fault they lost the game, but Justin Herbert with that supporting cast could have won a Super Bowl. Dan and David play Buy or Sell with the biggest Chargers storylines and overreactions including if the team has interest in star receiver Tee Higgins. The disgruntled Bengals receiver might be a great fit, but there's very little chance the Chargers trade for him and pay him what he wants. The guys also discuss Brenden Rice expectations in year one, and how many UDFA's could make the initial 53-man roster. New LB Coach NaVorro Bowman spoke to the media and had interesting comments, including letting out that one starting spot is Daiyan Henley's to lose.

I've stated this before on the bolt crew podcast show. I predict this new Greg Roman offense will be a run n gun type offense where the chargers will run the ball down the opponents throats, and take plenty of deep shots down the field. I predict Herbert will lead the league in average yards per pass attempt, and will have the most deep pass completions (30+ yards). My final prediction is the 8th best passing offense in the league.

  • @aaronshoup

Dan Fouts was better than Philip Rivers. Fouts threw for more yards than Rivers, and at a time when the defensive backs could play more physical than when Rivers was playing. Rivers was also in his 3rd year with the team in 2006, so it's not correct that Rivers was a rookie. But they didn't lose because of Rivers. But if they had won it wouldn't have been because of Rivers either. The funny thing was that they lost to the Patriots when everyone at the time was saying, "Who are they gonna throw to? The have no receivers?" Reche Caldwell was drafted, and was a bust for the Chargers, caught the game tying touchdown in the 4th quarter. The shame of it was that they fired Schottenheimer and went to the throw first, who cares about defense or offensive line strategy that has never worked in the NFL. I like Justin Herbert, he may have been able to win that game. I think Fouts would have too. I think Rivers would have lost that game at any time in his career.

One, the possessive of "Rivers" is not "River's." Two, no, Justin Herbert wouldn't have gotten that team any further because Marty Schottenheimer's game plan would have been the same. Lastly, while Justin Herbert has a losing record (which he currently does) none of these arguments are great. Let's check back in once he actually manages to do what Rivers did that year, which was go 14-2 and secure a #1 seed?

Does no make sense and its not fair to try to compare and disrespect Rivers in such way. How good was the offense line, 25 rank or worse. Herbert would of got hurt with 3 seconds or less to get rid of the ball as compared to Rivers never miss game. Rivers was more aware in the pocket, could read defense better and had a quicker release. Rivers was great on anticipating before play developed because poor offensive line and poor coaching and special teams. It would be to much to overcome for Herbert as well, i mean he could not overcome Jaguars in the playoffs and I believe Rivers with the offensive line would off won the game. Rivers had 25th ranked offensive line and worse most of his career. Rivers pass for 4,000 yards for 10 straight seasons I don’t think Herbert, Bree’s, Brady and Manning would of survived. Herbert is more mobile than Rivers but with this current offense line wish Rivers mostly never had. Rivers was a beast and should be recognized for that.

The answer is no. The Chargers were hanging in there until the Pats went to a 2TE formation and started running wide. They had worn the gallent Chargers out by then. Unless Justin played OLB he wouldn't have helped.
Let's not forget Capt. Rivers was not the reason for the playoff losses in the games he played. He threw a few bad ints against the Jets but Nate missed 3 chippies.
Had the Chargers hired Ron Rivera instead of keeping Norv a SB might have come. RR's teams always started off excellent.

I feel you, but that was not due to Herbert's bad play. That was due to the lack of a running game or much of a defense. An average running game would have put that game away. That's what happens when a team prioritizes receivers over OL and DL. Skill players make the highlights reel, but it's the guys in the trenches that actually make all of that possible.
