A thing about these mascot horror things and the... you know... the gate... is that it all stems to what is the most popular with kids nowadays. You can kill the gate, but it will always come back as long as something becomes really popular and trendy with the kids.
Fnaf genuinely scared me as a kid because it felt relatively real. Yes, it had some supernatural twists to it, but a man using a place where familys hangout to lure children away and kill them felt like it could happen. The same serial killer dying in the same suit he lured innocent children to their deaths in, and then coming back as an amalgamation of rotting flesh and metal, forced to live an agonizingly painful life to repay for his sins, was such a terrifying yet captivating story. And then Sister Location and the books came out, and I lost all interest in the fnaf universe.
Book just pretty bland and let just say, security breach is ruined by The media due the most of the viewer are children, I can't make my self lie about how things in it just don't make really kind of sense and lost all of the fnaf vibe on it
@@kyanartz Security breach had an interesting concept. But the execution was abysmal. The layout of the complex doesent make any sense to me, the main protagonist isnt really likeable to me, you can only really bond with one of the animatronics which completely destroys the point of giving the entire gang their own sentience and personalitys, Vanny barely made an appearance, and the story overall just makes no sense to me. The DLC was just as dissapointing.
@@EerieNone exactly, It does had cool theme but hell, the gameplay and the story was completely Out of context, and DLC just really dissapointing by adding the whole new Character that DOESNT even had anything to do with security breach itself
Honestly the issue is that it is hard to find something good unless it is popular, but the more popular something becomes, the more warped it becomes thanks to fans and content creators, so either you may never hear of something good, or you hear it so much that you want it gone, the only time a form of horror or general media is safe is when it finds the perfect middle ground of being known, but not consumed by the weight of communities
Then once you find something that’s rlly good and meaningful to you, you have no one to share it with because there’s so little chance they would’ve heard about it
That's the sad truth. I discovered the backrooms when it was relatively new, and for a short period of time I could enjoy it. Then it blew up and the Huggy Wuggy and Lightning Mcqueen videos started popping up and... I'm glad I could enjoy it while it lasted.
The overall rabbit hole of the UA-cam kids thing is something that I've experienced before in my time growing up, But generally speaking, As a 2010's kid I didn't grow up with these kinds of UA-cam kids stuff, (Well sort of) But All the UA-cam kids stuff with poppy playtime, security breach ect. Is sorta taking horror into a more child friendly approach which isn't too bad but a lot of the stuff they produce is weird and don't really accomplish anything.
Bro I completely agree with you horror when I was younger was scary but new horror is the same thing my 4 year old cousin plays and if she played the horror we played back then she would be absolutely spooked
the worst aspects of this genre is why i really love the games that either make fun of them, or deconstruct and reuse their tropes in better ways. Baldi’s Basics (a mockery of education and horror games, made to be intentionally not scary) and the recently releasing My Friendly Neighborhood (a mascot horror with a less fantasy-like horror angle, and with a more genuine, heartfelt story which uses the tropes better) come to mind first.
I also think that Baldi's Basics has a relatable appeal to children. I mean, who else hasn't had an overbearing teacher who'd scold or hit you for making a mistake?
Ah, Junji Ito, now that's a good horror pick. I always struggle to decide which one to use to introduce him to new people, it's too easy to scare them off completely, even with the more tame stuff such as Uzumaki (my own jumping on point). I tend more to Tomie, since it's also funny...ish... or, Remina. Pretty crazy, but short. It can hit people fully before they realize wth even happened.
I first got into his stuff after the FUNKe video. My personal favourite has been Black Paradox, everything from the themes to the horror and twists is just 👌
There's horror stories made by the Thomas the tank engine community(sad story of Henry is not the scariest episode of TTTE, that title belongs to Duncan gets spooked)
The same thing is starting to happen with TADC I don’t know why but I’m starting to see weird ass videos with the same genre as the videos you’ve shown and the videos are starting to sexualise pomni (my second favourite) which really hurts me. This is video is a definition of “suffering from success” and unfortunately, you are right! Guys we gotta slow it down with the masterpiece TADC before its too late!
Yeah,I agree with you. Despite my enjoyment for TADC. I'm not blinded by the fact that it's fandom is gonna turn to shit one day with all the r34 (Which I'm not surprised by it honestly)and controversies happening. It feels like it's just another popular thing that's gonna die in like 2 months. Let's just hope that content farms like lanky box won't milk the hell out of it.
Not gonna lie the manga image at 10:28 genuinely had me more unsettled and unnerved than all the games mentioned in the video, something about it is genuinely frightening to me. sick vid though
UA-cam kids should be more sensitive to videos and should not keep horror related charecter in the videos If that's a rule, It will save Internet horror and horror games
As a Early 90's Millennial who grew up on Hocus Pocus, Chucky's Child's Play, or ever the Aliens vs Predators Franchise as early as age 5, I feel bad for late Gen Z and Alpha, for their step into Horror. It just comes off as subpar in comparison to what me and my Family grew up on. And I don't believe that because of Nostalgia, that just how everything feels now.
We’re probably the oldest people in this comment section 😂 back when we were kids, there was effort put into things. Nowadays everything mainstream is so low effort, it’s all just mass produced garbage and everyone eats it up.
I'm part of that late Gen Z group but having boomer parents I too was brought up on those kind of movies and series. It was only when I got my own device that I was introduced to modern day "horror"... and yes, it is much more substandard and poorer quality than older horror.
Sorry I took a while to respond@@dysntgr8, but it's funny how you mentioned when you got your first device. Cause I never got my own PC or Mac until one of my Grandparents gave me their PowerBook G4 in 2013. And I never got my first Phone in General until 2016 with the Samsung Core Prime. Because of my instincts for these devices along with the use of Social Media is kinda Gen-X-ish as well, but at the same time I still think to myself if that too was for the best. That aside, I do sympathize with your backstory.
Idk, I'm too old to have experienced it as a kid, but I think mascot horror is a cool and interesting genre. Of course, I have the benefit of survivors bias and knowing which games are crap...
Finally someone mentions Ice Scream. I swear that game was a hallucination to me for the longest time. I feel like that game can have a whole video on how it basically disappeared
The fact is that I was literally Built to Be a family friendly horror game and says it is, I wish more horror games for kids get made so, we can seperate the shit, and UA-cam kids get like hypersensitive, blocking everything that features a horror charecter, a good way to end UA-cam kid's terror on horror

i fr agree with everything you say here Especially Friday Night Funkin' As a person who came from the community of that game, I'm generally mad and traumatized at the same time to see those youtube kids videos popping up. I swear, I've been in there for 2 years. I just dislike the fact those companies can be greedy on these characters for marketing too, it's just really bad. And yeah the inappropriate content are bad too. I remember when I was like 5 or 6, I saw one of those videos of spider man + injection thing, it ruined my innocence, I didn't understand it until I looked back now
kids ruin anything they get their grubby little hands on. and unfortunately, kids want to see horror involving things they like because they want to feel 'mature'
I've long been of the opinion that the thing that makes horror so great is it allows the audience to be exposed to harmful themes and emotions we otherwise wouldn't deal with in a safe manner; hence why the Silent Hill franchise is seen as a comfort game by many, for example. Being able to provide experiences like that is super valuable for not only telling engaging stories, but being able to help audiences better understand harmful emotions/themes (ie PTSD, stress, death, etc). The damage that mascot horror has done to horror games means game devs and storytellers are more incentivized by profit margins than trying to provide meaningful, or even just engaging experiences without much deeper meaning (ie Puppet Combo games). I think both PT and FNaF in their own ways contributed to the state that horror games are in, with devs taking the wrong lessons from them.
I wouldn't blame it completely on the mascot horror games though. The genre is a brilliant idea on its own - taking normally harmless characters and giving them an eerie edge. The main issue is that since mascots are so easy to be portrayed in a child-friendly manner, it would obviously attract a larger child audience. And these children can't play the games because they'd shit themselves, so they never experience the actual horror, they only know the mascots through youtube videos etc. The bigger problem arises because devs have noticed this growth due to child audiences and are overusing this genre to make quick cash. They fail to realize that these mascot horror games will not last a month in the community and will be replaced almost immediately, however a truly spine tingling horror game will never be forgotten
I miss the days before fnaf was ruined for everyone and it was actually scary I wish I could go back to that time because fnaf is my childhood and even though fnaf considered cring I still will forever love fnaf because I have spent so much money on fnaf Merch and I still love the games no matter how bad the games are I actually likes security breach and I loved fnaf world so I miss those days
This is such an interesting view on mascot/kid horror from the 2010s from someone who was actually in the age range! When i was a kid, i just watched actual horror movies. Lots of 28 weeks/days later, dawn of the dead, that sort of thing. Moved on to foreign horror as soon as i learnt how on the internet. I love fnaf and what not but I could never get into the mascot/kid horror popular back then and now. I just grew up expecting and wanting something different in a horror experience. The closest thing i can think of is creepypastas lol. But i would more read those than watch videos about them.
dude you are like my favorite youtuber. your content and editing is so amazing to watch. as a person who has a baby brother who watches youtube kids this video is sadly relatable.
It’s just a shame how cool horror ideas like the Trevor Henderson creatures, the backrooms, SCP, and many more get ruined by pop culture. Or, even worse: They get overshadowed by crappy, souless games designed sell merchandise (Poppy Playtime, Gartan of Banban)
back then everything on youtube that was for kids (where youtube kids was not a thing), everything on there would acually try to teach kids about things in life such as Story Bots/Netflix (I mean not that they did a good job on it) but atleast it did not have people getting a shot in thier ass to get views and money
FnF getting consume by the rot of UA-cam kids really messed with me personally considering I loved the game and getting tats(A BF,GF and MM Tats) , but I can't really share that love I have for it or commit to it without people calling it that "kid game" or berating me for my interest, but I felt like it had that adult swim humor and even the newer comics and animation are finally starting to get in that groove
When there's actual "for kids" stuff, YTKids doesn't bat an eye When there's horror stuff that CLEARLY isn't made "for kids", YTKids milks it to oblivion What the flip is that all about?
10:41 One thing I also want to note is among us was probably also helped by the Henry Stickmin collection thanks to the many references and (ofcourse) Henry
Hey so, I know you don’t like mascot horror, but look into My Freindly Neighborhood, it’s honestly the best recent mascot horror, where the gameplay and voice acting is really good, and the story is actually interesting. (Also it’s a whole game)

when you talked about the horror mascots and that i saw the ddlc girls sitting in the theater with the other, i was fucking scared, youtube kids videos are disturbing and prolly kink hidden in plain sight and seeing the characters of one of my favorite games in it would've make me vomit my organs
4:30 not at all! Deltarune proves you can do this successfully and improve the story's pacing. Each chapter is one big comprehensible story. Even games like Paper Mario did this and it was to it's benefit. It's just the Mascot horror games that abuse it for the sake of budget constraints. Whereas Deltarunes chapters take YEARS to produce.
"Wanna watch" I'm afraid that's quite the overstatement. It's more like accidentally clicked on then sat for 5 hours as auto play cycles through the dumpster fire these channels call content as the kids brain makes not a thought nor sound except for the dial up noise. I don't think anyone thinks the kids are actually watching the content. They're hypnotized into a stupor by the familiar characters, bright colors, and loud sounds. I seriously hope studies are made comparing the intelligence of kids allowed to mindlessly watch this content and those who didn't. It would be fascinating.
When BATIM first released chapter 1, it was genuinely terrifying, there was a yellowish atmosphere, it was like smth could pop out at any corner I wanna go back to those days
Y'know, I wouldn't be surprised if your inspiration for this editing style was EmpLemon. I can just feel the similar energy oozing from the way you present the topic.
to me, videogame horror was the Goosebumps carnival game collection (PS2/Wii) and Grabbed by the Ghoulies (XBOX). the latter had controller vibration which sent me running out of the room out of shock.
Glad you talked about this, I know this is not horror related but I still like to play FNF and Among us, but it's weird having to say it without sounding out of age, because so much UA-cam kids content has made those games "cringe", I play the game because I like it, not because everybody else is playing and stupid kids content wont make me "cringe" just because I enjoy it. Anyway, great video
It's must feel horrible when you're someone like Trevor and your best creations like sirenhead and stuff get turned into complete and utter nonsensical garbage. Don't care about stuff like poppyplaytime characters being destroyed though because it was already a bad cashgrab to begin with.

I’m so glad that Little Nightmares didn’t fall victim to this same trend of UA-cam kids ruining horror, I mean they did try to ruin it but fortunately kids didn’t seem to really care about Six
I personally really love the characters and the world that MOB entertainment has built around the Poppy Playtime series and I also enjoy playing the games too! But i am pretty sure that my opinion would be a lot different if playthroughs and theory videos weren't the first impression, but instead it'd be whatever the heck the kids' content is. I am very sad that the characters got into that kind of content because now, no one really takes the franchise as anything else than a souless game for kids and I am often quite embarassed to tell other people how much I am into the games. I'm scared that they'll automatically think that this weird second coming of elsa gate is the content i'm into, and I must be a 6 year old kid without a life. The kids' content using these characters not only ruined the reputation of the game and its developers but also the reputation of anyone who really enjoys the original media, where the characters were brutally taken from.
After seeing some recent images posted by them and looking at the remasters of chapters 1&2, I’d say they have beaten most of the “for kids” allegations.
I think that Keplerians are the only Game devs from the bunch that actually care about their games. A great comparison would be between the Granny and Evil Nun's Pc ports. While the Granny one is basically the same game with a flashlight mechanic slapped on top, the Evil Nun one is actually pretty good, with the devs going above and beyond players expectations by remastering the entire game to be suited for the creepier atmosphere PC horror games tend to have. The other ones are pretty much just cashgrabs with the same low detail and colorful mascots as Poppy Playtime. Also a quick correction on the paid chapter release part, while yes, Bendy and Hello Neighbor were indeed one of the first games with a chapter base release, you never had to pay for them. You just got them for free when the devs finished working on it. The first 'mascot horror' game to somewhat make you pay for every chapter was Dark Deception. The reason of why I said 'somewhat' is because you can actually buy the full game for 17 bucks, or each chapter for 5, in case the demo didn't show you enough. I think that's all I have to say. As always, a great video. ΦωΦ Keep it up lad!
Good examples of kids' horror would be stuff like The Nightmare Before Christmas or Laika's films like Coraline and Paranorman. They have a lot of spooky elements and still provide enough scares, they are also PG enough for children to enjoy.

A thing about these mascot horror things and the... you know... the gate... is that it all stems to what is the most popular with kids nowadays. You can kill the gate, but it will always come back as long as something becomes really popular and trendy with the kids.
Just like William Afton!
And then Sister Location and the books came out, and I lost all interest in the fnaf universe.
if you describe it like that, yea it does sound scary, however i kinda lost interest in fnaf after pizzeria simulator
@@uuuh_ok1 completely understandable. For a lot of people it was the ending to Fnaf, atleast it was meant to be.
The overall rabbit hole of the UA-cam kids thing is something that I've experienced before in my time growing up, But generally speaking, As a 2010's kid I didn't grow up with these kinds of UA-cam kids stuff, (Well sort of) But All the UA-cam kids stuff with poppy playtime, security breach ect. the worst aspects of this genre is why i really love the games that either make fun of them, or deconstruct and reuse their tropes in better ways.
My personal favourite has been Black Paradox, everything from the themes to the horror and twists is just 👌
You could try to introduce them through World of Horror, a videogame inspired by Itos work.

It was only when I got my own device that I was introduced to modern day "horror"... and yes, it is much more substandard and poorer quality than older horror.

and then there's the mobile ripoffs of FNF
kids ruin anything they get their grubby little hands on. and unfortunately, kids want to see horror involving things they like because they want to feel 'mature'
True
I’m at just the right age where I remember genuine horror content as a kid to watch a lot of it blow up on the internet and see the general downfall

It’s just a shame how cool horror ideas like the Trevor Henderson creatures, the backrooms, SCP, and many more get ruined by pop culture.
Or, even worse:
They get overshadowed by crappy, souless games designed sell merchandise (Poppy Playtime, Gartan of Banban)
Courage the cowardly dog, Goosebumps, and Aliens were my intro to horror
back then everything on youtube that was for kids (where youtube kids was not a thing), everything on there would acually try to teach kids about things in life such as Story Bots/Netflix (I mean not that they did a good job on it) but atleast it did not have people getting a shot in thier ass to get views and money

4:30 not at all! Deltarune proves you can do this successfully and improve the story's pacing. Each chapter is one big comprehensible story.

ΦωΦ
Keep it up lad!
Good examples of kids' horror would be stuff like The Nightmare Before Christmas or Laika's films like Coraline and Paranorman.
They have a lot of spooky elements and still provide enough scares, they are also PG enough for children to enjoy.
Instead of making the horror scary in the correct way UA-cam Kids made their horror go the complete opposite direction.
