    Thanks for the video. Gonna be doing this for the first time soon. Hit my prop yesterday so figure I might as well do this and perhaps the impeller while I’m at it.

    I'm sure you are fine at that level. I usually have a little leak back out too... but you have to be the judge. You could replace the washers... but I change my oil fairly often (since it's cheap) and don't notice an water leaking into the oil. And since my boat is trailered, I would also notice if any oil were leaking out.

    Is it possible to replace the plugs with (of course) with the same sized threaded type only a type that s removed and replaced using a socket wrench? I had a Evinrude 175 back in '88 and changed the gear lube with a big flat blade screw-driver and it tightened down fine. Six months of heavy fishing later, I went to loosen the screws and I could not. I want to say impossible. I suppose the vibration from the running motor tightened it into oblivia! LOL! A socket would have done it! Thanks for the good vid! JEE.

    The handheld impact driver is a great idea, until it's not. Using it to install the screw risks cracking the casing. I've seen the results and there is only the option of replacement at that point.

  • @favritcuz1
    @favritcuz1 9 років тому

    I'm having a hard time loosening the drain and fill screws--I used the impact screwdriver and the flat head tip bent--can you please advise me with suggestions to help in this matter.

    • @DanielScheerHowTo
      @DanielScheerHowTo  9 років тому

      Debbie Ngai You might try soaking it with some penetrating fluid and let it sit a few hours. The impact driver has to be turned in the correct direction before striking to ensure proper functioning otherwise you may be tightening it. The drain screw can be replaced, just be careful no to damage the lower unit. It might be time for some professional help. Good Luck.

    • @DanielScheerHowTo
      @DanielScheerHowTo  9 років тому

      +Tyler Brunson I would wait a few months of use and change it again. If it looks like oil, you should be ok. If it's milky again, you might have some bad seals allowing water to mix with the oil usually at the prop shaft.

    • @tylerbrunson1443

      @vassilyknigge850 Рік тому

      @@benlewis1959 that's what I have heard but maybe if you filled it slow and spun the prop it would be fine. In the end I anyways found a pump to fill it from the bottom.

  • @Smokercraft427
    @Smokercraft427 9 років тому

    Shouldn't use the impact driver, outs not necessary and could cause damage. If you tilt the motor up before taking out the oil fill line, a little less will drain out while you reinstall the lower plug.

    Now I have very very minimal knowledge about this and assuming this is the way you’re doing that it’s correct.. now how come you can’t fill it from the top part so when you remove the pump, no oil spills out from the bottom.. ? Seems like more logical way to do it lol

    Just my opinion but, the impact driver is a bad idea. Totally overkill. You're just gonna damage the screws and wind up with PITA or expensive repair. The impact driver is a last resort in the tool box.

    • @thunderdtt
      @thunderdtt 10 років тому +5

      you obviously dont understand how an impact driver works to remove a tight screw that has a slot that is oversized to any large flat head you can buy, for my trim tilt screw i had to cut a piece of stainless bar stock and use a wrench to spin it.. flat head screws are just a bad bad idea on any engine application period.

    • @kreigdernier9553
      @kreigdernier9553 6 років тому

      Ryan Pearce has to do with the inner workings trapping air top down traps more air. I was shown a bigger Yam that actually burnt out its lower unit due to a top down fill. It may work if you know exactly the amount required for oil but is the air is trapped and won’t allow the oil in then you just have more headaches.

    • @adenovirus.
      @adenovirus. 6 років тому +1

      he mentioned filling from the bottom forces the air out of the oil system
