Workers say cell tower sites putting them at risk

- San Diego - The more we rely on smart phones, the more data we want and the more antennas we need.
Workers say they are getting injured working on these antennas. They say the constant push for more towers is putting them at risk.
Team10 talked to a San Diego company that came up with a solution to keep these people safe.
The Worker
Benjamin Rivas worked on cell phone towers for 14 years.
"I was dealing with them day in and day out--climbing the towers, on the rooftops," Rivas said.
He left the business after an antenna that should have been powered down was still live.
"It physically burned my hand. You'll get burned on the outside but internally it blisters."
The burn is a work injury you can see. Other problems he said caused by the towers are not as easy to spot.
"Depression, I get headaches, mood swings,” Rivas said. “Things I've never gotten before."
Rivas is one of the 250,000 workers that the insurance rating agency AM Best said gets too close to these antennas. They act as an open microwave and can cause eye damage, sterility and cognitive damages.
There are 600,000 cell towers in the United States with thousands more on the way. Sprint just announced installation of 20,000 more towers.
The Problem
Drew Fountain co-founded San Diego-based RF Check. The company tracks where every tower is located in the United States. Fountain showed the RF frequencies coming from several tower sites all over San Diego using a $20,000 meter.
"I'm going to show you the invisible footprints of these potentially hazardous areas that these workers don't see," Fountain said.
Fountain said an RF frequency over 20 percent is over the allowable limit by the FCC. He showed Team 10 RF frequency ratings from towers on a Del Mar rooftop that ranged from 20 percent to 150 percent.
Fountain said cell phone tower workers, roofers and painters could be put at risk if they don't know where those towers are located. Many tower sites have these signs telling workers to stay at least three feet away from the antennas.
"Signs are dismissed by workers,” Fountain said. “This doesn't even say anything,"
The law requires that the workers be made aware of these areas before they get near them. That's not being done today.
Since 1985, the FCC has required workers be made aware of these dangers, but the law doesn't specify how to alert them. The FCC gave notice of a proposed rule change two years ago for the cell companies and site owners to figure out the “how.” Fountain said the FCC tried to make things better for workers but the companies and owners have been slow to act.
"Cell phone providers are looking the other way and not protecting the little guy," Fountain said.
Rivas claims that if you tell a manager or company about safety concerns, you are let go.
"What we're told is to just go ahead and work. Get it done," Rivas said.
The Solution
Fountain helped develop the only database of every wireless antenna system in the nation, so workers could be made aware of the danger before they get to a site. RF Check is working with the FCC to get it used across the entire industry. Workers would check the tower sites before any job.
"If they need to work in those areas they can request a power down through our protocol," Fountain said.
Rivas believes it could have protected him.
"It would be a savior," Rivas said.

It doesn't work that way. We're allowed 200 percent of rf exposure over the general public. Power is irrelevant, it's the 30-300 range that is danger.

I am an engineer and certain networks push the power level (thus gain) way way way too high just to get more business. 5G does use microwave radiation (and LTE to a less extent).
Folks, All you have to do is follow the money. These mega corporate phone companies know damn good and well people are being exposed to the dangers of these microwave RF frequencies yet they will deny, deny, deny. The problem is that it's not just the antenna maintenance workers that are affected, it's also the roofers, painters, and other maintenance personnel that are affected and most likely not even knowing such danger. Let's hope the upcoming FCC meeting spurs some mandatory safety measures like what the company, RF Check has to offer.

Microwave radiation is dangerous. 5G towers are powerful like microwave ovens. Get a microwave meter to check. Microwave ovens have protective metal and screen enclosing to prevent danger to humans. Microwave towers do not. I lined my place with foil. Problem solved. I was getting over 1000 micro watts per meter squared to under 25 micro watts per meter square after lining my room in foil. I used 4 sheet thickness. Japan safety limit is between 100 to 200. Austria between 15 - 25. Cell phone companies don't really care about our health. Each individual should check his or her unique situation. Experiment using a good microwave meter (i own 2. One made in UK and the other in Germany) with microwave ovens, cell phones, wi fi, and cell towers. Experiment using aluminum foil. Let the meters be your guide.

A good friend and my ex brother in law both had heart attacks after being RF experiments.. My friend was given a $5 raise to recieve groceries at a brand new meijer grocery store in 2020.. They just covered it to tell you that only workers are at risk, how laughable, for one people live right next or under it and second people are exposed to it 24/7/365 just because you dont burn up right away means nothing. Cancer rates are at all time highs, maybe, just maybe it's also because of wireless tech.
This is fun to watch. I've been doing RF surveys for a few years with the same probe. It really is that expensive! Especially the part about sending it in for calibration every two years at $1500 a pop :-(

People who dismiss have not done their research. the FCC has not updated its policies since 1996 at 2G they only list tissue heating as the only marker and completely ignore any other possible health effects especially since there are communities that have already shown that they harm ppl in the proximity range. These towers damages DNA, along with damaging brain leading to neurodegenerative diseases, tumour, decline in memory capacity, affects thinking ability, affecting language portion of brain too. Prolong exposure can be fatal. Living in urban areas makes my skin itch and my skin feels like burning, my skin temperature rises, sometime I get head ache when nearby wifi router. Now I understand why people are getting dumb and aggressive.
And on January 5th it's only going to get worse as they begin using mid-band spectrum for their 5G.

I worked closely with 3G plus from Alcatel in South of Brazil. On a experiment of power measurements, I got sick 3 days and bleed on my urine.

This is another example of employers ignoring their safety responsibility to workers. Hazards of close up exposure has been known for a long time. Years ago, I did some work on the microwave level of the CN Tower in Toronto. On the doors leading out to where the antennas are, there are warning signs. The entire office was also enclosed in a Faraday cage, though that was more to avoid interference than injury. Risk is dependent on power level. While cell sites are nowhere near as powerful as radio & TV broadcast transmitters, they can still produce harmful levels, if proper precautions are not taken.
Please note, this has nothing to do with the nonsense people are claiming about cell sites, particularly 5G. Signal strength decreases with the square of distance, so those at ground level are exposed to much less of the signal than someone actually working on the equipment.

The concern, for the workers, is a great thing, considering they're exposed to it while at work. What about the people inside the buildings, being exposed 24/7 365?

I recently measured behind some new panel antennas that had been installed and even at 2' I wasn't sure they were transmitting because the power density was so low. Holding the probe out in front was a different story! They're very directional.

Careful of these shady Central & South American cell phone contractors not being trained properly on cell sites.
This is ridiculous. I work in the industry. RF is non-ionizing radiation, which means it is non-accumlative. Also, the power is irreverent, and also very weak by the way, you can touch a live wire and it will only give you a small shock. The frequency is what is dangerous. Antennas operate at a range from 600-2300 generally speaking, none of those ranges are dangerous to humans. Educated yourselves people.
I'm starting a job next week upgrading cellphone towers all over the gulf south. Cant wait.
