- In todays video we start our journey back home riding our Harley Davidsons across to the West Coast where we descend to the ominously named Gates Of Haast.
Despite the foreboding name, the Gates of Haast is actually a gorge in the Mount Aspiring National Park around 60km inland from the township of Haast. Spectacular terrain with sheer cliffs overlooked by the snowcapped Mount Brewster, the road drops sharply from the summit leading down to the gorge which is crossed by a one lane steel truss bridge.
Our group of HOG Auckland Chapter riders were joined by half a dozen riders from HOG Christchurch Chapter who were happy to accompany us and take the long way back to Christchurch. Once again our good friend Rex led this section of the ride so we could just settle in the bunch and enjoy the sights on this magnificent scenic route which has become one of my favourites.
Memories .... i want to go back.
hahaha, you and me both TJ. Might have to try and squeeze in a few medium range overnighters through the holidays 😎 Of course, ideally, it would need to stop raining.
Me too :)
Great video , didn't get to catchup at the roar, oh well next time.
Next time brother, looking forward to it 😊
That road is spectacularly awesome. On a fine day, magnificent, on a typical wet west coast, still so, if not a massive test of the waterproof gears.
Exactly right. We were prepared with the full wets in our bags but we didn't need them at all on the coast, a quite unexpected but welcome turn of events.
Holy hecka, that scenery looked breathtaking. Thanks for sharing Hugh.
cheers brother, it was the best ten days on a motorbike of my life without question. Looking forward to going back down there and finding more amazing roads.😊
@@HughBeRiding thinking of going down to the march hare next year if work and funds all line up.
@@dynaridingnz cool mate, that should be a lot of fun. Hope it all comes together for you. 👍
Awesome road that, the Haast Pass is one of my favorite rides and I still talk about it to this day. I rode it many moons ago and I definitely want to get back down there again. Thanks for sharing mate, cheers😎
It sure ticked a lot of boxes for me and November was a good time to ride through - still a dusting of snows on the tops but nothing untoward happening down on the roadway. Also there was a nice reward of a whitebait sandwich just up the road in Haast at the Hard Antler. 😋😎
Will be riding that after the burt Munro. On another note, I had to use that runway sand trap about 22yrs ago in an old bedford bus that got complete brake fade.
Hope you enjoy the ride after the Burt - should be great weather in February. The old Bedford bus tale sounds hair raising but at least there was the runaway vehicle ramp to ensure a happy ending. Ride safe 😎
