I missed out a final preset before rendering the video, and the corrected version of this video file is STILL waiting to be reviewed by UA-cam (which is now three days overdue). I decided to post what I already had uploaded instead. 2. Just to share that I now have a Patreon set up. Feel free to take a look and support me if you’d like to but there’s no pressure. Any support will go towards better equipment and quality to my videos :) www.patreon.com/coffeehousecrime 3. Finally to share my schedule - I will always post a case on a Friday with the occasional short case on a Tuesday. I’ve already uploaded this coming Friday’s video, but now I have to hope that UA-cam approves it in time. Have a great week! ☕🏠🔍
Catch me signing up for your Patreon before I've even watched the video. (Okay, to be fair, I had to make coffee before watching the video so signing up while waiting for it to brew is just good time management.)

A single door was the difference between 19 people living or dying. Remember ladies and gentleman, if you work in a building with fire escapes, insure that they actually work.
Remember being taught this by a search and rescue guy/firefighter. Remember the exits near where you will be in the building (even windows, they can save your life). Have an escape plan. Know how to get to said exit. Always ensure the exits work, and aren't blocked by anything. Also practice how to open the door, even though that sounds stupid, your brain doesn't function well under stress and you might just fumble the door handle to your demise. This is why most emergency exits use crash bars.
@@candle_eatist Furthermore, make sure there are two sets of doors between the exit and the building, so the exits don't end up functioning like an air funnel for a raging fire. The main reason you don't open windows and doors during a fire, is because the fire will instantaneously become highly explosive, due to the vast amounts of oxygen suddenly available. Expand the emergency exits and make sure they work, yes. But do also make sure that they indeed are emergency exits and not flamethrower funnels
@Levi Ackerman they mean that the 19 ppl going up to the roof to avoid the fires, could’ve survived if the door worked. The other 25 were in different floors and no where near the door.
@Michael O Callaghan Yep. The Violet Evergarden series (which is on Netflix) has received two movies. One of them is a side story (that movie was finished literally a day before the arson), and the second one is a sequel. I definitely recommend watching Violet Evergarden, if you don't mind shedding some tears, though do bear in mind that the second movie has not been released online yet (Japanese Blu-ray comes out in August). Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid's 2nd season is the other post-arson series coming out soon (July 2021). Nice little slice-of-life comedy. Unfortunately, its director Yasuhiro Takemoto passed away from the arson attack, so a different director is taking over this season (Takemoto is still credited as one of the directors). A lot of other projects like the Tsurune and Free! movies are in the works right now.
While visiting Japan back in 2015 I stopped by the Kyoto Animation Studio 1 building just to have a look and take some pictures as a fan of their work. To my surprise one of the workers came out to greet me and told me how happy she was to see a foreign fan come by. I thanked her and she showed me the way to their gift shop up the street from the main building that sells merch from some of their anime’s . I really hope and pray she was one of the survivors, or perhaps didn’t work there anymore by the time of this horrific attack. It really scares me to think about…

@@danielaperezacosta1940 That solidifies it right there. Some humans can be pure evil but then there are some who are selfless, even in their darkest hour.
I was visiting Japan for the first time when this happened, literally everyone was heartbroken and confused as to why something this horrifying would happened. I'm just happy to see KyoAni pick back up and strive to make art once again.
i was in kyoto about a month or so after it happened. i remember being on the nara line, and just happening to look out of the window at the right time. there, i saw the burnt-out shell of studio 1.... absolutely horrifying.
The most disturbing thing about it is that he took the lives of 36 people because one of their anime had ONE scene that was similar to his story. He was truly fucked up in the mind.
Especially when it was just some super generic shite. At first I thought "Okay, let's see if it could be true", but then the narrator said how it was about the characters buying discounted meat in a store, I was "Wtf? That is a scene I have seen in anime and manga for like a dozen times already. It is nothing special at all." It is almost as stupid as saying "Oh, I wrote a scene where they all go to the beach and enjoy themselves during summer holidays. All of the anime studios stole this scene from me! I have to burn them to the ground now!"
When we finally learn what the scene was (buying meat at a super market), I couldn't believe it. I thought it was a full length episode worth of plagiarized material, not some mundane scene that anyone with a pen could come up with and write. Christ, how does anyone justify this in their own head?
Forgive me for giving a morbid comment, but your comment alone could be a good source material for plot-making in anime and improvise the story to make it even better
@@Sainaku: VERY True !!! This bum, luckily, had to suffer badly. .... And will likely be put to death for his atrocious crime. *Does anyone know if Japan uses a Firing Squad or if they do Hangings?..?
The fact that so many of the victims died in the stairwell, trying to get out, that really hurt. It's a small comfort that the doctors put him at the bottom of their priority list.

It is a generic scene where someone buy discounted meat ,a convenience store scene will eventually appear in most slice of life anime ,i dont know how some people think that is plagiarism
Everyone gets mad and feels ripped off sometimes, and writing a strongly worded email is an appropriate response to it. Nothing excuses his actions. Nothing. He deserves to face the consequences of such horribly violent actions.
Its crazy how all those people went to work that day without thinking any different, just another normal day at work, then they were burned alive, that couldve been any of us at work that never got to go home, its truly a terrifying thought. RIP.
like in flight in a passenger airplane and next thing you hear the announcer that "we're crashing in matter of seconds" like seeing the reactment of the crash + radio voice-overs its heartbreaking to how their demised came to be
For anyone wondering, I heard the anime in question was Tsurune. It’s a decent slice of life about a team of high school archers. The scene was one where two characters who don’t get along, discuss buying meat for a team bbq. They agree on the best cut of meat for the price and find some on sale, which is fine because they were going to cook it that day. That scene is where the two characters really start to understand each other and it’s a good scene, even if it’s pretty generic. It’s a great show about getting over loss and how it can affect people in the strangest ways. I enjoyed it, like I generally enjoy anything that comes out of Kyoani studios.
@janda5816 - They have more buildings, and as the video said, most of the survivors chose to continue to work there. They have since come out with the second season of Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid. It still credited Yasuhiro Takemoto as director, even though he was one of those killed.
"The thing that KyoAni copied is that the Main Character buy a discounted meat" such a simple and common scene can lead to a huge massacre is unbelievable...

@@McLovin25165 Kyoani didn't copy anything, he's mad because of a scene where the main character buys a discounted meat, which is a very common scene that i don't think it needs a copyright or anything. The saddest part was that they did not use any of Shinji's art, therefore owed him nothing. I think he owes his life for what he did to all those people needlessly. Just selfish and evil, in my opinion.
This reminds me hugely of the insane American animation stalker Truebones "Joe McPeek" who hasn't killed anyone yet but can be found making death threats and getting into verbal arguments with Epic Games Lawyers and many others delusionally claiming he owns their content. KyoAni will never be the same again... These types of fans need serious help, they killed families and basically destroyed any chances for KyoAni to ever go back and revisit their past masterpieces
The saddest thing is that for whatever reason the building had no sprinklers because they weren't required for whatever reason. The blocked fire door made the situation even worse, but had there been sprinklers it's likely everyone would have survived.
It was an old building from days where it wasn't required if I remember right about this incident. And to install some, they'd have to renovate the entire building.
Floors 1&2 were engulfed in 20 seconds, and the 3rd within 90 seconds later. Animation studios still use paper and the staircase acted as a chimney making a what amounted to a fire tornado. Horrific. Many buildings in Japan are not built to last more than 20 years because of earthquakes and lack systems and materials that make the buildings cost more than their predicted usefulness. Since Fukushima and the tsunami there has been a call to revise this practice, but has had little traction. Sometimes there is no way to protect life from the evil that is done. 😥
wait it had no sprinklers? then that makes sense why it seemed so bad and uncontrollable for such a huge building even tho the explosion was at the bottom floor. I cant think of any commercial building not having a sprinkler system here in the US.
It's not whatever reason, that's just how Japan works. I lived there for years and never had sprinklers in any of my buildings. They also use highly flammable materials for the walls.
>1% survival rate and he made it >was the first person in Japan to undergo artifical skin grafting. It's like this dude's luck decided to kick in at the worst possible time.

@@719Flowers (Heads up the comment now that I'm finished typing it is pretty long so I apologize) Yea when it did happen it was a pretty big topic. Its not like it was impossible to miss but with how much attention it gathered in the anime community it was hard to not miss. There were bound to be many post from social media accounts of anime streaming services like Funimation and Crunchyroll and of course some popular figures that may follow anime related things had shared, reshared, tweeted, and whatever else there is to spread the info. I remember hearing about it back then and at the time it was disheartening. The loss of many talented individuals surely made it a possible reality that the things we had taken for granted (the works the studio worked on) could have all just ended midway or never have been started/worked on again.
RIP to the 36 people who lost their lives in this tragic and horrible attack. And condolences to the victims’ friends, family and colleagues effected. Best wishes to Kyoto Animation from England.
And he had nothing to lose. People don't realize if a human has no property or people in this world then he has no skin in the game called society. Meaning he has free reign to tell society to fuck off.
it would have just made it burn even more. It was already a funnel if they opened the door it likely would have created a roaring inferno as the oxygen flow fueled the fire from every broken window (the new open door on the roof would create a huge draft due to the heat) It's lucky they didn't open it. Although still horrible and absolutely sad.
jumping from 3rd floor window would also saved most of the lives also. broken bones is better than death. also maximum heigth when correctly landing is around 6 meters without any injuries.
How ironic I go to do a rewatch of this case, decide to look up what Shinji had been sentenced to since it had been almost 2 years since you uploaded this. And he has been sentenced to death! Fitting for the cruel crime he committed.
@fukuanimepfpusing piecesofshits how is anime pure evil and will "corrupt society" exactly? it seems like you are already "corrupted" already. it was his own fault for killing multiple innocent lives just for a simple shopping scene, how is that the animes and Kyoto Animations fault? honestly, the second half of your username perfectly describes yourself and whatever your comments say.
The death of someone never hits you until you finally realize they're gone and won't come back. Took me years to realize my great grandma won't come back and now I regret everything. It took me a year to realise these people won't come back. Took me too long.
In terms of the elderly, I miss them far less because they lived a long life. Far beyond the national average in most cases. As a long time anime fan, I'll never forget the dread I felt on that day. Coming online in the morning and seeing the twitter trends: "KyoAni, KyotoAnimation, RIP, fire". And then spending the entire day refreshing the timeline in hope for good news, for confirmation of safety of staff members known to have been in the building. And instead the number of confirmed victims just kept rising by the hour. The world lost a lot of talented artists that day. The entire reason why he was able to get in was that there was an appointment for an interview shortly after. The reporters were set to arrive in the next hour or so, so the front door was unlocked to allow them into the lobby. They felt completely safe to do this. Also, there's a typo. The series that was his alleged motive is called Tsurune, based on a novel that was published in 2016. And I would have loved if you had also said something from the angle of how disrespectful news outlets were in the following days. Police asked the media several times to *not* publish the names of the deceased until their families had consented to the police officially releasing that information. They were also asked to not publish the name of the culprit so he doesn't get any type of fame for it. But they didn't care about that, they just wanted to get as many clicks as possible from grieving fans. Some broke into the culprit's appartment, others stalked families of victims until they managed to coerce them into giving interviews. It was a mess.
I know that exact feeling, when my brother was murdered, we had to fight off reporters with a stick... As we were instructed to do by the police, as it wasn't entirely solved yet... But they kept hounding us.
I never been a fan of KyoAni.. They anima's just aren't for me. BUT I knew of the company and as a general Anime fan I was shocked and horrified when I heard about it. And I rushed over to the Gofundme as soon as I heard about it and threw it what I could. Even as tragic as it was it was also heart warming to see how much people donated both on the offical site and through the gofundme.
A sad story. So many talented artists lost forever. I’m at least glad the surviving artists decided to perfect their craft in order to honor their fallen.
Well I mean imagine saying that to the person who created the lightbulb or the first plane? That’s a piece of your work that can make tons of money. Your property. Intellectual property. @Cody Ingram I mean mature people realize situations that they’ve created themselves. A mature person wouldve recognized their declining mental health and admitted that they need help. Instead of trying to improve himself, Shitji determined the most appropriate course of action would be to make others suffer just because he was unhappy with his own life. You can have mental health issues, but to willingly, consciously, plan and implement the harm to other people is where we need to draw the line between a person suffering from mental illness needing help or being removed from society. No matter the issue, it takes clarity and forethought to plan and execute an attack like this
@@yeahnahyeah3883 Well schizophrenics aren't exactly known for being in control of their own actions. This guy clearly KNEW what he was doing. I'm unsure if he fully thought out what his actions would entail, or if he just didn't care. This man was isolated with his own thoughts, and his lack of maturity is what prevented him from realizing that 1) he was being a dumbass 2) he could've easily remedied his situation if he used his fucking brain and got some help. So yes, I would say this incident is due in part to both a lack of maturity and poor mental health, however if even one of these issues had been remedied then he likely wouldn't have committed any crimes. It's easy to say what could've been done in hindsight but I think the best thing we can do now is use this guy as an example for how isolation can be devastating,.

And, unfortunately, as it is with mass shooters and the like, by the time these people get noticed for whatever shit they have going on in their lives, they've already killed a bunch of innocent people. So, it's almost impossible to prevent stuff like this. If anyone is every feeling like this - get help. Don't make your personal problems someone else's death sentence.
My heart feels very heavy every time I hear about the KyoAni massacre. It hurts so much knowing that the people behind some of the most amazing series are no longer here to see their success.
Yes, I'd have to say I feel like that too. Sure there'll be some else who's also talented and who might make great things. But people just can't be replaced.
Let's remember how they lived! They left behind a long, and illustrious legacy of animations full of life and happiness. I'm sure that's how they would want us to continue living - by enjoying the products of their efforts.
I'm not an anime fan, but KyoAni's Violet Evergarden helped me work through some trauma. When I heard about the fire, I sobbed. So many dead, over a generic scene in a show
@fukuanimepfpusing piecesofshits You do know 36 people died. No matter what you believe in or dislike, murder is never the answer. 😑 If you’re pissed at someone just leave them alone. If someone does something to you, just leave them. Don’t stoop to their level. Then you just end up as bad as them.
I was trying to find any updates on the case, since we're in 2022 now, and the only thing I found was an article from October of last year saying that he's supposed to be undergoing more psychological evaluations before being prosecuted. I'm normally against the death penalty, but I think it's fitting in this case.
I was actually studying abroad IN Kyoto when this happened. I remember seeing the news while checking my phone during class and reading it over and over again to make sure what I was reading was real. The idea that a couple miles away from you dozens of people are losing their lives is just... an unbelievable and surreal feeling I never want to experience again.
I was in the Zeze prefecture when this happened; it was on the news everywhere and you could see the hurt on everyone's face; my host family couldn't believe something like this happened. There's a train that's decorated with Kyoto's anime characters that only runs throughout the Kyoto area. I didn't realize how loved that animation studio was until that incident happened. It was the heart of Kyoto. I still think about this, even now...
Zeze prefecture?? Are you talking about the town in Shiga? Also, I never would have thought of Fushimi as being the heart of Kyoto. It's a pretty large prefecture with many centers of interest.
@@sashizakura9124 you are one of those people that others don't like at parties, aren't you? They are referring to the fact that metaphorically it was the heart of kyoto because it was loved by many. This honestly made cry, why are people so evil. The fact that 19 people were that close to excaping really hit the nail on the head for me, just thinking of how sacred they must have been ;-;
The inability to open the roof door may not have made a difference. In a fast fire, opening a vent to the top of a building may result in a blast of heat, gasses and flame up through the opening, which would still have killed the people trying to escape.
Ive run up stairs in a burning building in Syria. I didn’t look back but the buildings were close to other buildings so it was easy to escape to the next roof. I guess i got lucky, I am no firefighter
"May not have, " It still most likely would have saved them Getting blasted by heat and fire sounds a lot more survivable than being trapped inside a burning people until you die.
@@lootratmark6016 No, opening a roof door would likely have caused a blast of fire to go upward through the opening. The only difference would be how quickly they died.

A single door was the difference between 19 people living or dying. Remember ladies and gentleman, if you work in a building with fire escapes, insure that they actually work.
That’s why fire drill 2x a year should be mandatory like in our country
Remember being taught this by a search and rescue guy/firefighter. Remember the exits near where you will be in the building (even windows, they can save your life). Have an escape plan. Know how to get to said exit. Always ensure the exits work, and aren't blocked by anything. Also practice how to open the door, even though that sounds stupid, your brain doesn't function well under stress and you might just fumble the door handle to your demise. This is why most emergency exits use crash bars.
@@candle_eatist good tips1👍
This is also why push open from inside became a big deal. And even those don’t always work during a panic suprisingly
Pretty devastating to know that 19 people could have survived if the door would have worked..
One of them was a well-known director.

They've released 2 movies and soon their first TV series since the arson; training and hiring new people. They are coming back, slowly but surely.
Still, we lost a lot of talented people.
@@vinoths1613 what typo

It is nothing special at all." They agree on the best cut of meat for the price and find some on sale, which is fine because they were going to cook it that day. That scene is where the two characters really start to understand each other and it’s a good scene, even if it’s pretty generic.

The death of someone never hits you until you finally realize they're gone and won't come back. Took me years to realize my great grandma won't come back and now I regret everything. It took me a year to realise these people won't come back. Took me too long.
The true about iseka is not really, you never go to other world
This was true in the case of my father. I regretfully didn't say a lot, maybe sometimes said to much. Life's crazy so love your family.
In terms of the elderly, I miss them far less because they lived a long life. Far beyond the national average in most cases. But when my step dad died before he was even 50 years old it hit me far harder than grand parents passing. It sucks not being able to text him to show him stupid funny internet stuff. Or new songs from bands he liked.
For years after my friends suicide I thought I saw him in crowds.

It’s most likely that it didn’t work because of the air pressure caused by the fire itself and not because of it wasn’t working in the first place ..

Rest In Peace, Yasuhiro Takemoto.
Confirmed as one of the Deceased during the attack.
You are sorely missed.
one of the greatest directors in all of anime, RIP.
As a long time anime fan, I'll never forget the dread I felt on that day. Coming online in the morning and seeing the twitter trends:
"KyoAni, KyotoAnimation, RIP, fire".
The way that media treats families is so gross. thanks for adding more information for us who hadn't heard of it!
I don't think such details are easy to find, and it says more about the media than the crime.
it was the most devastating news for me and still is to this day

It started with Japan producing anime, it became massively popular with a small minority who began to neglect other parts of their lives. Immature people do things without thinking about consequences, or what their actions REALLY represent. So yes, definitely poor mental health but he was immature.
@@KingSlimeProductions yeah no... schizophrenics for example a lot of the time don’t know they’re sick, does that mean they’re immature? Of course not, a lot of mental health issues cause a person to have no self awareness.
@@yeahnahyeah3883 is the schizophrenic person murdering people? I think that's the key point to take away here. You can have mental health issues, but to willingly, consciously, plan and implement the harm to other people is where we need to draw the line between a person suffering from mental illness needing help or being removed from society. No matter the issue, it takes clarity and forethought to plan and execute an attack like this
@Jo don't try to troll here
@@yeahnahyeah3883 Well schizophrenics aren't exactly known for being in control of their own actions. This guy clearly KNEW what he was doing. Regardless of his mental health, the interviews all show that he is aware and consciously made these decisions. He knew what he was doing, and he realized his actions would cause harm.

Not the example that should have been, but a reminder to all that for either better or worse, one person can have a tremendous impact upon the world.
This part. I feel like these types of people spend WAY too much time in their own heads. They need friends and loved ones to focus on and to talk them down, not just strangers on the internet who might actually encourage bad behavior or existing delusions. This is a generalized statement, of course, but I wonder if this guy would have acted so violently had he spent his life less alone. Some people spend so much time convincing themselves that they're being slighted by the world, when it's actually their own brain tricking them. Sure, Shinji would have needed to put in the work to make his own life better, but sometimes all that rejection and shit is just bad luck. But, instead, of taking a possibly temporary L, this asshole convinced himself he was amazing and killed a bunch of people over a delusion.
And, unfortunately, as it is with mass shooters and the like, by the time these people get noticed for whatever shit they have going on in their lives, they've already killed a bunch of innocent people. So, it's almost impossible to prevent stuff like this.

Ive run up stairs in a burning building in Syria. I didn’t look back but the buildings were close to other buildings so it was easy to escape to the next roof. I guess i got lucky, I am no firefighter
Added oxygen to fuel the fire. At least they would be where they could be rescued.
"May not have, "
It still most likely would have saved them
Getting blasted by heat and fire sounds a lot more survivable than being trapped inside a burning people until you die.
@@lootratmark6016 No, opening a roof door would likely have caused a blast of fire to go upward through the opening. The only difference would be how quickly they died.
I feel sad everytime I think about this massacre...I remember hearing about it and being devastated.
I cried so hard when I heard about it. KyoAni is one of my favourite studios! Luckily here in AU we got both Violet Evergarden movies and I saw them as soon as I possibly could. I even donated money cause this was such a huge blow to the anime community. Still hurts thinking about it >:
@@rayne4224 i couldn't donate at the time because i didn't have any money to donate.. but if i could've i defenitely would have.. i rarely cry but this was one case in wich i did cry
