- The most common question I get in the comments is about the top speed of the 125. In this video we explore the ultimate pros and cons of this bike. Where does the top speed falls into?
Never been on a motorcycle before and during lockdown I decided to learn how to ride. This is my journey and my thoughts.

Excellent video and review. Thank you!
Thank you so much!
In the first-test in France I read this (yes is Google traduction and the last Line is important) : The wet-sump, liquid-cooled Bajaj engine here delivers a maximum torque of 12 Nm, relatively high for a 125, which the engine delivers at 7,500 rpm. Chain-driven double overhead camshafts actuate all four valves while a single counterweight is present on each gear to eliminate unnecessary vibration. The block is also effective in this area since even at the limit of 11,000 rev / min we do not feel excessive vibrations. The Bosch ECU, made in India by a subsidiary of the German company, controls injection with a simple top injector that feeds the 33mm Dell'Orto throttle body. The ECU limits the top speed on our model to 100 km/h, but the engine is capable of exceeding 120 km/h without this limitation.
Oh wow! So basically it is limited to 62mph (100kmh) because of EU emission laws? Am I reading this correctly? This is bullshit if that’s the case. Thank you so much for this mate!
For the first 1000km, or 621mi, the revs are limited to 7000rpm. This limit is lifted automatically after 1000km (at least on the Spanish version), but this is also when you should get it's first bedding in service if you are following the manuals maintenance times. That's why you are seeing the red limiter light. The ability to set a rev limiter is on the dash after this..
You’re right! The red light indicator after the 1st service can be set by you. In the end, I think it’s just an indicator and nothing more. I mean, it doesn’t really limit anything, it reminds you to change gear by being a nuisance 😅 BTW, at the moment of this recording I had more than a 1000miles and already done the 1st service.
The highway code for motorbikes is very old in Italy. But this bike is perfect for going around Italy including the islands, without going on the highway, enjoying the panorama of the journey and also making stops prohibited for those on a diet ;) :) Thanks for the video...Un Abbraccio da Roma
Isn’t this bike allowed on highways in Italy? I thought 125 was the minimum? In any case, it is perfect for the islands and maybe mountains? Forse Toscana o lago Trasimeno? Ora che ci pensò un po’ di più, Urbino è perfetto per lei ;)
@@vanyer401 125cc motorcycles on the highway are not allowed. and also in many provincial roads... unfortunately. the contradiction lies in the fact that even slower 150 scooters can go anywhere. however la Toscana is perfect if you are on a diet 🤭
@@giannisossai7312 oh wow! I lived in Italy (Rome) for 8 years but never realised that… it is rather antiquated indeed. Hahaha yeah Toscana… on a diet… ;)
I’ve had 76mph out of mine but I was down hill and no wind but she now needs oil an filter change after 1369 miles
Couldn’t dream of that top speed. My results were consistent so maybe it was my revving as another viewer suggested.
Your not riding it how it needs to be ridden. After 1st service you need to nearly hit the rev limiter in every gear from 4th. I have a Vitpilen 125 slightly different engine to yours and I can do 57mph in 4th but if I shift early it will struggle to do 55mph in 6th.
bike will get quicker as the engine beds in should do at least 80mph with a few extras like a nice exhaust currently looking at my first road legal 125cc don't know which one to go for so far the Yamaha 125 legacy is winning this bike is nice also and slightly cheaper
Never rode the Yamaha. I did my license on a brand new MT but I was not very impressed tbh. The rear brake was excellent though. Good luck mate on your first buy.
That’s weird.. I can easily do 71-72 mph on mine with 4300km on the odometer. My max speed was 125kmh but that was a bit downhill with wind to the back hehe.. Anyway, you should look into that issue. Also, the ergo seat is a looot more comfortable (and will fit one day to the 401) and get yourself some plugs for the factory mirror holes (just to save the threads). The sixth gear is rather to save energy than pushing it to the limit. I did 10h journeys on my bike already and I can say it’s perfect in the city but once you get stuck behind a truck you dream about the 401 or even 701… and a full driving license.. Best wishes from Berlin!
So much info in one comment :) Thanks for the input! Honestly, I cannot get her to run faster whatever I do. Maybe it is an issue as you say? Since I got my full license a new world has opened to me hence me testing the 401! It is a shame though that we can’t really enjoy the 125 outside the city. So much potential wasted if you ask me. I guess it makes the 401 a more desirable bike but with the price of the 125 it’s a no brainier given the choice? Definitely need the plugs.
@@vanyer401 I have the same issue with the speed. You have to drive it to the limit in every gear. The 6th gear is useless in my opinion. You can use it downhill but not for more.
You could not describe the 125 Svartpilen better mate. Great bike anyways
@Anon Two yes, exactly the same bike.
I topped 77mph you have to go all in 4th-5th gear and when 6th.. also you can adjust the flashing red light by yourself( see manual ) next time when you’re going 60 in 6 drop it down to 5 the speed will increase
Alas, I no longer have the 125 :( I knew about the red light but I have no idea what is the optimum range tbh
Does it have dual channel or single channel ABS?
It is a Bosh dual channel system. Excellent brakes except they squeak sometimes on mine (I don’t mind it).
@@vanyer401 got it. thanks for replying
you’re gonna be so pleased with the 401
Stay tuned ;)
Considering its the same engine, and essentially the same bike as the RC and Duke I don't understand why it's so much slower...............was going to get one until I saw this.
Well, many commented that I’m doing it wrong and I should’ve changed gears way later… another one said is due to emissions etc. I don’t know honestly. I am a slow rider though…
What did you expect? It’s not a bike for the highway. It’s a street bike and very nice at that. It should do about 75mph on a level road, though.
Probably yes, I just couldn’t achieve it as you can see. Many reasons for that though :)
It’s a good 125 engine, the bike however weighs 150kg+ wet. That’s top end for the engine capacity.
I always thought of the Svartpilen as a very light bike but I never thought of comparing it with other bikes tbh. It makes sense if you think of the weight of some scooters with the same engine size.
You have to rev it higher before shifting. You really have to stay in gear until you are almost in the limiter at around 11k rpm. Otherwise you’ll lose top speed. 4th gear up to 55-56mph, 5th gear up to ~65mph. I also found that the 6th gear is rather useless. I usually lose speed in 6th gear unless the conditions are perfect.
Ab yes and the bikes power is highest at 10k rpm. You have to use the full range with this bike
I thought that revving higher would’ve achieved top speed faster? I mean given a long stretch you’d arrived at the same top speed regardless of acceleration. I’ll give it a go and post the results. Thanks for the suggestion mate.
@@vanyer401 I got the feeling if I shift from 4th to 5th gear it’s lacking a bit of power and won’t accelerate to top speed for some reason. Im looking forward to hearing about your result. You should definitely get faster than in the video.
@@vanyer401 no, you really have to push the bike and rev it to even get to top speed. If you do not rev it enough, it could just stay at a speed that is not the top speed, regardless how long of a stretch you have.
@@oddarntnes7079 maybe you got something there. I’ll test it!
Can you tell me what is the mileage of it
At that point it was around 900.
Thought it would be faster, isn’t the ktm duke 125 much faster
I thought the duke had exactly the same engine minus some tweaks so it shouldn’t be much faster? Please note two things. First, I did not accelerated properly according to many viewers. Second, it might be further limited in the EU due to low emission regulations. I’m at a loss at this stage.
This is wrong. I got exactly the same bike. It gets easy to 110km/h, no downhill
Apparently, many viewers are saying the same thing and others that I should’ve upped gears at a a higher rev range. I wish I still had the 125 so that I could test the suggestions :(
It's a shame they're taking so long with the 501/Duke 490 platform as it would probably be an ideal size for a lot of new riders and a twin cylinder.
Interested to see the next part and what you think of the 401.
Didn’t even know they working on a twin cylinder…. And I was so pleased with my decisions lately ;(
Looks like there is a limiter
Probably yes. Other viewers suggested the same. I’m wondering if it can be tampered with? I mean bypassed somehow? That’s a project to look forward too. Is it even legal in the UK?
Go for a 250.It has plenty of hp and torque.i am able achieve 145km.
Is the 250 available in Europe? Where are you based mate?
@@vanyer401From Turkey.Sorry i didnt know it isnt available in Europe😐
@@84necronlord I know it is not available in the UK, not sure about the rest of Europe tbh. It seems unlikely to me.
Maybe because you are an older/larger guy?
I am 178cm - 72kgr so I think I’m pretty average? The older might be a thing because I don’t like revving high :)
@@vanyer401 i weight 100kg and i've done 100 kph with a 72kg passenger
@@oscardominguez1680 Oh wow… apparently, I was definitely doing something wrong…
I also have the Svartpilen 125. Nice to drive, but slow as f**k. Imagine two people would sit on it. In example two 16 years old teenager with together 130kg, then they could almost walk😂 I drove a SMC before and it made 75mph with me on it and I am tall and not skinny. My son has 65 kg and he is not faster than me. You need to revv it up to 10k plus to get speed. The 6th gear is totally useless. The parts on the bike are way too good / heavy for the speed it can get. When you drive through pitches/ hills, you will be an obstacle all the time and even trucks will pass by. I think Euro5 is a problem, too. Maybe they should have built it less heavy weighted, but of course it looks great. According to the papers the topspeed is 72mph, but this we never reached. It drives pretty normal without any issues. Is this maybe a Software issue? Or does anyone know If there are any useful tunings to get a bit more out of it?
That’s exactly my experience too. At high speed you’re an obstacle. Maybe the larger bike parts are an answer?
The seat sucks but who cares- Couldn’t have said it better. Complain all you want, but you didn’t buy a sofa and you knew it.
I know, right? In all honesty though I haven’t used the bike in any trip longer than 2 hours so maybe I’m downgrading the issue a little bit. I think you should have breaks in longer trips anyway so maybe there’s no issue after all. Definitely knew about it though and I don’t think it’s a deal breaker. I’m gonna use the “it’s not a sofa” line from now on :)
@@vanyer401 Haha yeah, i feel like some motorcycles are just sofas on to wheels
