I've been married for almost 40 years and till this day , if I'm baking something for company . I can still make it flop. I use my mother's excuse. She would always say it must be the whether. Don't feel bad. It will get better. Sending my love as always. ❤

Hi Valerie, this is my FAVORITE format of video! I love watching others bake while im in the kitchen and i love voice overs. Please do more like this! Also, a note about confidence in the kitchen, it took about 7 yrs of being in my own kitchen, making mistakes and learning, before i became confident. Im married and in my own kitchen for 10 yrs now and the kitchen is one of my favorite places to be, which is good with 4 growing hungry kids and my husband 😅 you grow into it. One day you will look around and realize that you have become the mom and cook that you aspire to be. The main thing to remember is to not compare yourself to others, your kitchen and food are unique and will become core memories for your family. And learn to laugh at yourself and be thankful for a supportive husband 💕 😊

Dont give up on your baking and cooking skills, Valerie. I was HORRIFIC at both when I first got married as I did not grow up in a household with anyone who enjoyed doing either. It was a WHOLE struggle bus for me for about the first whole decade of marriage until I actually TRULY started enjoying being in the kitchen and knocking out great meals consistently. It is my favorite place to be now.
And yes about Gilmore Girls. I was so disappointed the UpTv did not run the Gilmore the Merrier marathon over Thanksgiving week this year. I do have the DVD set and can stream the series elsewhere online, but it had become a tradition for my family to have the series running in the background for the whole week while we took care of chores and getting ready for the holiday, and sitting down to fully focus on scenes or full episodes when we could.

I think we need more videos like this, showing it's okay to make mistakes.... Some of my favorite stories growing up we're of my aunt's starting to cook in the first years of marriage. One aunt added a cup of coffee grounds to a cake that called for a cup of coffee, not realizing they meant brewed coffee. I set the fire alarm off regularly because I left the water boil away... Julie burns water became the joke.❤

I totally understand feeling that way… I’m new in the sourdough world and I’m the same way when my stuff messes up. I tried to make a a sourdough pumpkin shaped loaf and it was awful… I think I over proofed mine bc it was so dense and funky. But as a baker/ cook too I know how much work it takes to make something and ya do feel bad. My advice is it takes time and grace. If people say they don’t have flops they are fibbing.

I laughed out loud when you said that your whole world comes crashing down from a failure in the kitchen. That is so me! I’ve been cooking and baking since I was old enough to hold a spoon and everything comes out really good most of the time, but that one percent of the time that something is a total failure I question my whole ability to bake, and I wonder why my family puts up with my cooking at all.😂

Do you have the Hope's Table cookbook, Valerie? If you do, I recommend trying her cinnamon roll recipe (it's not sourdough, though). I will warn you that it does make a LOT more cinnamon rolls than the recipe says--if I remember right for a half a recipe it makes a 9x13 plus an 8x8. They always turn out perfectly for me--soft and delicious. But the recipe doesn't say to use bread flour, and that's what I use and recommend.
Another cinnamon roll tip is to whip the filling till it's light and fluffy before spreading it on (you want to spread it fairly thin). It keeps the filling from melting down to the bottom of the cinnamon roll so much.
The caramel frosting that I use is to boil 1/4 c. butter and 1/2 c of brown sugar till sugar is dissolved (it's a little hard to tell). Add maple flavoring (optional), milk, dash of salt and powdered sugar. The milk and powdered sugar I just add until it's the right consistency and a very light tan color. Whisk it together!
I also use regular sewing thread to cut my cinnamon rolls. Slide the thread under the roll of dough, cross the ends together and pull them tight. It slices right through and you have a perfect roll without it being smashed by a knife.
I hope at least one of these tips is helpful to you. I started off having almost no cooking or baking experience before I was married and now I enjoy it and cinnamon rolls just might be my favorite thing to make!

@@ValerieKeim I should say, it's not always fun for me either. Especially in the summer when I'd WAY rather be outside, but there's something so satisfying about turning out a good meal. But I've had more than my fair share of flops in the kitchen!! Especially with cookies....your cookies turned out beautiful and mine always turn out either too flat or they don't flatten at all or something. Its so frustrating!

@@ValerieKeim I forgot another tip (I hope I don't sound like a know-it-all--I don't feel that way at all, I just have picked up some tips that have really helped me feel more confident in my cinnamon rolls and I like to pass them on because to me a good cinnamon roll is basically love in the form of a pastry!). An instant read thermometer is a must have for cinnamon rolls or bread in general. If it reads 190* your bread should be done! It takes so much of the impossible guess work out deciding if your cinnamon rolls, bread or dinner rolls are done!

The cinnamon rolls looked fine, but I understand. We all make mistakes, but the recipe WAS at fault. I use my bread maker to make the dough, and then I fill, roll, and bake. You might think about a bread maker if you feel more comfortable baking that way. Pizza dough is easy in a bread maker, too. I enjoy your videos, and I appreciate that everything is not perfect. You find a way to be positive and laugh a bit. Good for Chip, having a good attitude about it all. I hope you enjoy your week!

I totally agree! I tried watching Gilmore Girls one time, and I was so convicted, I had to turn it off. To be honest, I was so shocked that such a filthy show was so highly praised and promoted on a Mennonite channel. I always thought Mennonites lived so close to the Lord and were so careful about not allowing worldly influences to infiltrate their homes. That is one of the things I have most respected about them and their way of life. If we don't do certain things because of Godly convictions, why would we allow them to be done by others or shown in our homes? Our kids hear and see what is being said and done and insinuated on TV shows, just as much as they would hear and see it if it were being said and done and insinuated in person. There is truly not much of a difference. I mean, where is the distinction between us and the world if we watch and recommend things that the world embraces and the Bible clearly condemns? I have to say, I am pretty disappointed right now.
