  • Rare radio interview from 1974. I edited out the music and commercials so it ended up being pretty short.

    Gene is humble and Ace is Sober. Wow, Gene gave Ace credit for the logo!

      Yeah nowadays they claim Ace purposely used a Not-Z SS bolt to offend Paul and Gene. They were more humbler and honest back then

      Gene and Paul have always said Ace created the logo. I've heard interviews from the 1990s/2000s where they've both admitted it. What they didn't bring up (and I've never heard them asked) is how the double S/lightning bolts resembled the logo of the Nazi Schutzstaffel organization. I'm sure back then the entire band figured it would be racy and dangerous and it might bring them some kind of publicity. If it was done today they'd be canceled given the current hysterical climate we live in.
      BTW, I remember Paul saying (maybe in his book) that early on Ace played every concert sober, but afterwards he'd get completely tore up. Once the band achieved major success, Paul said Ace and Peter let their partying became more important than the band. It's almost like success allowed Ace and Peter to afford better drugs and in greater quantities. Ace was constantly getting into car crashes and police chases around this time. Around the time of Dynasty, even Peter had his own car wreck and his injuries left him hooked on pain meds.

    Something that you just don't get anymore...when the radio stations were our live connection with what was going down in the Rock world, many,many late nights were spent listening to these special shows,this was WAAAAYYYYYYY before the internet...there were shows like the King Biscuit Flour Hour that broadcast live concerts and that was an event such as ZZ TOP, THE WHO, FLEETWOOD MAC the list goes on....but understand this is just not a KISS thing but a look into the music scene of the 70s, no cell phones no computers just television and radio, you couldn't wait for the weekend to catch the Midnight Special with Wolfman Jack or Don Kirshners Rock Concert....these were the best, showing your favorite groups performing on television....these were great days

      I used to listen to Metal Shop for new up and coming stuff. The show came on Sunday evenings and I would record the show in hopes of hearing new music and I would take it too school on Monday if any new music was previewed, KISS, Iron Maiden, etc..

    She comments on their good singing voices. And I've always thought that Gene had the best singing voice. I love his version of "When I Wish Upon A Star". This early Kiss stuff is coming out now. It's interesting as heck.

    • @YouTube.Algorithmic.Nonsense
      @YouTube.Algorithmic.Nonsense Рік тому

      Oh God no!! First, it's "When You Wish Upon a Star," which was on Gene's 1978 solo album. Not sure what you mean that early Kiss is just coming out now. It's always been out. Secondly, there's something antithetical about a song in Walt Disney's Pinocchio and Kiss that doesn't work. I remember Gene saying Kiss was supposed to be about attitude, aggressiveness, and "from the street." In many ways, the solo albums are around the time when Kiss started losing it's way. Only Ace's album sounded like Kiss. The band was over merchandising (pajamas and lunch boxes) and their shows started to be filled with little kids.

      From 1974 to 2021is 46 years. Interviews and concert clips from their early years of Kiss are starting to pop up on the internet. Soundboard recordings of decent quality, live videos have not always been so available. I like Gene Simmons solo album from 1978. Especially when "I" wish upon a star. Eye, eye, eye. Not you. Me.

      Of the two, Simmons is far more eloquent. Frehley hadn't yet come out of his shell. Perhaps that's why Simmons spoke more. He had yet to become the eglomanic he is now. LOL

    Interesting to hear Gene in the early days, before he became a tiresome bloviator, repeating the same 15 talking points ad infinitum. At this point Kiss were still traveling to gigs in a station wagon, sharing hotel rooms, living on a minuscule per diem, while Bill Aucoin's American Express card was being constantly maxed out. I'd say Kiss's big mistake was trying to follow the zeitgeist of the times, going disco, fragmenting into solo albums, and going Super Kiss Las Vegas with the absurdly flamboyant costumes. They should have stuck to a strictly hard rocking formula & stayed with the black and silver outfits. Ac/Dc and Motorhead, for example, stuck to their own unwavering formula and went on for decades as other bands appeared and vanished. Imagine a rock band putting out an album every 6 months, as Kiss did back then. Go ahead and try, I dare you! That's one reason a lot of the lyrics were so bad, there just wasn't any time for reflection, touring, writing, & recording two albums a year. Them's was the days.

      Bill Aucoin came up with Gene's outgoing Rock Star personality, because he said Gene sounded too much like someone's parent's or a businessman, he didn't like Gene doing interviews because it didn't match his character. Today it's no secret, Gene is a quiet mama's boy when the camera's aren't rolling.
