You know you’re good and you know your shit when Stewart Copeland sitting there all wide-eyed with a smile on his face Way to go Sheila you are the matriarch of drumming!!!!!
I love this explanation of drumming‼️ Control and knowing when to show out and when to let the rhythm breathe really separates good drummers from great drummers👏🏾👏🏾‼️‼️
@@watsonira7 Shelia E is..like words cannot express .. I call her the QUEEN OF PERCUSSION and I stand to my words when I said it... we're talking about a woman who is a true PRODIGY... playing drums at 5 years old? That is like whoa......and to come from a family of legendary musicians.. I believe that Shelia E should of gotten her flowers a loonnnng time ago... I appreciate the Latin Grammys given a lifetime achieved award... but she shouldn't had to wait that long... to play for George Duke, Michael Jackson, Confushun, i know the list is longer than that plus to play and create music with Prince.. I honestly respect Prince soo much though because.. Shelia E voice and music was heard through her albums.
@@melissaleoncreolenola you could also say to work with Sheila E was pure gold for Prince. Before Prince she worked with Herbie Hankook, The Jacksons, George Duke and Stevie Wonder, so Prince was just one more, but a more intense and longer lasting collaboration and relation, of course. Prince was not that goid thanks to talent, he was veey good because he worked harder than most other musicians. That is the secret that actually is no secret
Y'know... I never really gave her a chance. I remember seeing her videos on MTV (a television channel that played music videos back in the 80s) and since I was into Rush and Slayer, not only did I dismiss almost all the music on MTV, I just saw her as a singer standing behind some drums and stuff. Much like the way a singer at the time would use a guitar to have something to dance with. Not to play. Basically, part of their wardrobe. But then I heard her name recently and discovered that she was indeed, a talented musician. I wrote Prince off the same way. I had no idea that he was such a great man and a great musician until after he died. Its mind blowing discovering all the talent I basically ignored or avoided by refusing to listen to pop music.
Thanks for this great footage of Sheila E. The notes she plays near the end, right before going into "Kiss" reminded me of the beginning of Wishing Well.
Sheila: “… in a way less is more. it's when not to play so even if we have all of this here doesn't mean that I have to play it all…“ Stewart: Oh, shit.
Playing true *Funk*.. those ghost-notes are paramount for the *feel* of the music. Aka "playing with swag." Done right--- and listeners cannot control themselves when they're moving bodies.. head and feet. They're under the control of the music. Sheila's example of James Brown's drummer hit the nail on the head.
I think of drummers like John Blackwell, Maurice Bland, Bobby Z. But GOOD LORD you have no choice but to acknowledge Sheile E , Hannah Welton as also standout drummers for Prince.
The term "ghost note" came from drum corps when heavy lines like Boston Crusaders would play flam patterns but not hit the tap or accent and only play the grace notes as a psych to the drum judge. The correct term should be GRACE notes because that is what they are.
It's disappointing hearing her say "James Brown" and not Clyde Stubblefield-James Brown's drummer, who has been sampled by everybody from Sinead O'Connor to NWA and none of those pricks even mentioned him on their albums. I wonder what it's like to be one of the world's most underappreciated drummers.
You know you’re good and you know your shit when Stewart Copeland sitting there all wide-eyed with a smile on his face Way to go Sheila you are the matriarch of drumming!!!!!
Discipline is when not to play. Wow !
Great concept, many drummers showboat or simply play over the music.
Thank you Sheila E

Two of my favorites, two of my angels/heros/inspirations in one room....pretty epic. God bless. 🙏❤🙏
Sheila E one of the greatest women in music business
Yesssssss
One of the greatest means you can name some that are close or better.

Sheila E was the shit and she still is to me. I love her. She has that untouchable soul.
Perhaps the greatest female percussionist ever hands down. But then again her dad?? Hello!!!
2 of my favorite drummers. As much as I love some Stewart, seeing Sheila E get down is super cool
Watch her video playing timbales along with Tito Puente "El Rey del Timbal" .. it is genius..
in my opinion Sheila is a little bit superior, but Stewart is good too
I think Sheila E is the perfect example (like Carlos Santana) of one who adds soul to the sounds, simple but yet delightful.
I been a fan of her since i was a kid in the 90s great video

"Give shape to the air between the beats..." So well put and so well played. What an amazing teacher/musician/person, etc, etc. 😊
..thank u so much .. it was like sugar and honey and chocolate .. joyful ... ..peace ..! .. rip Prince.
still one of the most talented and sexiest musicians of all time.
Amazing drum sound, and, of course, amazing woman...! I love her ...! (and Stewart too...)
Stewart and Shiela E, a drumming dream team for bassists 🤘🏻
¿Stewart Copeland?
OMG, LOVE ME SOME SHEILA E, SHE A WORLD CLASS MASTER DRUMMER
Such a cute and sweet person and an amazing artist !!!!!
Two of my favourites. Fantastic. 😎
I love them!!!💖💖two musicians stars!!!
Yes. 2 of my 3 personal favorite drummers 👍
Is Neil Peart the other one?
Absolutely love her!
Never knew about her until i saw this doc. 🙆♂️ Yes, out of my world. Every video is amazing, that solo in the Sign of the times video 🤯
Sheila: “… in a way less is more. it's when not to play so even if we
have all of this here doesn't mean that I have to play it all…“
Stewart: Oh, shit.
She was one of the most charismatic people around on 80s music videos.
Lobe love love her💖this one is great. Loved learning about the silent beats
Ghost beats
I could listen to her all day!
love the vids with her dad and with Tito Puente as well
The QUEEN OF THE TIMBALES &THEN SOME!!
When she started playing prince's song, I was like noooooo don't end yet!!!!!! 😃😯😟😒☹😩😭😭😭😭
Oh great full and absolute drumer is Sheila. Hai fine 🙏❤️🙏👍
yeah I used to love playing the ghost notes
Beautiful masterclass from the master Shelia E!
Ah ha ! Ghost notes were in all the Prince 🎵 🎵 songs.

Dang. That woman is aging verrrry well. 🤩
just got a drum kit, learning from THE GOAT
I love this lady
It was halfway through when I realized that was Stewart Copeland.
A national treasure!!! Sheila!
That woman is still an incredible drummer
....AND overall percussionist, don't forget
Her 2 and 4 is nonetheless unmistakably HER 2 and 4. This is what is meant by the pocket!
Long live Clyde Stubblefield!
DJ portorro in the mix. Amen god bless. My wife Elisa Cruz Gonzalez. Emisora Nuevo Amenancer. 👍
Love !!!!!!!
Awesome madam.
I think of drummers like John Blackwell, Maurice Bland, Bobby Z.
But GOOD LORD

These 2 should've done a drum duet
She is and will ever be smoking hot untill she is 100
I thought you passed.
OMG Much love.
Basically solid...Thanks
Still smokin hot!
James Brown called the the 'Fatback' groove.
DRUM GODS STEWART COPELAND AND MISS SHEILA FUCKIN E!!!!! : )
Stuart Coppeland y Sheila E faltó Juanita Parra de los jaivas
Spettacolare Funk woman🤗
She nailed the brief...👍
I love the fact the sound is so bad, but the message so loud, it almost adds to it :-)
Love for her ❤️
I LOVE SHEILA E
Some of the loudest ghost notes ive ever heard
Hubba hubba
Great advice
Ha that was fun!
LOVE HER!!!
I assume she is talking about Clyde Stubblefield.
yup
@@CraigMansfield Cool 😎
James had other drummers. Clyde played on some of James' most memorable hits and was his most sampled drummer.

So. I guess I'm an extremely undisciplined drummer then... ;-)

What song is she drumming in the first part?
Josh Nicholson that’s James Brown’s cold sweat! Great song!! 😎🎷

She's got a great pocket/groove. Not a huge fan of her singing - LOVE her drumming!!!

Ghost notes serve a rhythmic function; they are played to add spice to a groove. Grace notes serve a melodic function; they add spice to a melody.

How a view football.
correct overpaying is annoyingly for the ear...
She's as drummer and doesn't even credit the actual drummer, "James Brown". FOH
her right hand is boring
She is good but because of prince to did teach her stuff on the drums
Watch Pete escovedo her dad. I don't think Prince can take all the credit
No. She taught Prince. Prince wasn't as good on the drums as Sheila and she had been a musical force out of the Bay area before he even got started.
Why does everything a woman does well has to be attributed to some man? Sheila E. is talented all by her damn self!
Basics drum skill. Listen to Neil peart if you want to hear a real drummer
Clyde Stubblefield has never been basic.
They are both mediocre drummers.
Says the man who never had a hit😏...
