- In this video, we'll be talking about six different types of working dogs. These are terrier, herding dogs, guard dogs, bird dogs, scent hounds, and sight hounds.
Working dogs have been used for centuries for a variety of tasks, from herding livestock to finding people lost in the wilderness. If you're interested in owning or working with a working dog, this is the video for you! We'll discuss the different types of working dogs, their origins and some of the tasks they're best suited for. By the end of this video, you'll have a better understanding of the different types of working dogs and what they can do for you!

I noticed that the pit bull was shown for the terrier category. While there are folks that do classify them as terriers, according to the authorities on pit bulls--Mr. Richard Stratton and Ms. Diane Jessup respectively--seen in swell videos on this channel, the dogs seem to be bulldogs in pretty much every respect.
That was just what old school dog man called them not necessarily a actual bulldog breed just as a nick name
@@tito1lowHD I do know that dogmen have (still do) call them bulldog. However, it was more than simply a name for folks like Mr. Stratton and Ms. Jessup. In a fine video on this channel, Mr. Stratton when interviewed said that he believes that the pit bull is the original bulldog. Even when talking about dogmen, I would pose the question as to why they call them bulldogs. There has to be more to it than just because. Based on what Mr. Stratton has said, it seems there is more to it than a random label.
Anyone who would put a pit bull into a bulldog category is a whole fool and you probably shouldn't listen to anything they have to say

@@fullmetal1766 I can understand disagreeing, but I can't see calling someone an entire fool. That could just be me being biased since I can understand some folks believing they are more in the bulldog category. Terriers, at least to me, seem to differ more from pit bulls than other bulldogs in both form and function. For example, many terriers are used for going to ground for foxes and groundhogs. They also look more like the dog that played Wishbone who was a Jack Russell terrier. On the other hand, pit bulls are usually used for catching work for wild boar and look more like American bulldogs and other bulldog breeds.

Why was the sled dog (which also hunted Polar Bear and seals) left out? Spitz types were also used for whatever their owners consumed.
I can only assume it was out of simplification, or the fact that we really don't use them for anything other than "fun" anymore. Many of these other breeds are not phased out as of yet, and still provide a lot of essential services to people, excluding the sight hound category. No disrespect to sled dogs, it's just more humane to use snowmobiles and take it easier on the pups. So many sled dogs were culled, abandoned, and mistreated. When Inuits were breeding for the "ideal sled dog" they were ruthless in their efforts and really did cull anything that didn't meet their standards. Back then it can absolutely be excused, but now, with machines, there's less of an excuse for it. I still think it's great to do with dogs for fun, but not as an actual job that they can be injured or die for.

The western German shepherds are not good. Deutsche Schäferhund DDRLinie is good. It has a straight back. These dogs guarded the Iron Curtain.
Love the channel, keep up the good work! I don't know if you take requests for breeds, but I'd love to see an episode on komondors and spanish water dogs respectively. As an owner of both these breeds I can attest to their unique versatility for farms/homesteads. The spanish water dog can herd, guard and retrieve on both land and water, whilst the komondor makes for a uniquely intelligent LGD that is as useful guarding property as livestock. Also, the komondors ability to learn and respect property boundaries paired with a close guarding style and low barking tendancy make it a particularly suitable guardian for the smaller farm/homestead like my own.
Do you herd with your SWD? If so how effective do you find it and what is their herding style like?
@@brennonschwartz8504 My SWD is only 6months old currently so he is still very much in training. He hasn't shown much natural aptitude for herding yet to be honest, but is around livestock (sheep, goats, chickens) everyday. If he starts to show some herding instincts I will definitely work with him to bring it on. He is a great watchdog however and I often leave him with the chickens as they are free range and he will bark at the slightest disturbance. He also has a great retrieving instinct as well as being amazingly loyal to our family.
There are a few videos on youtube of SWDs herding although they tend to be in spanish and titled "perro de agua" rather than SWD. They really are fantastically versatile little dogs and I would defintitely recommend them, but best to get from working parents if you specifically require a herder. Hope that helps!

My boxer is an amazing guard dog, he can hear a pin drop on carpet and ready to pounce! He's also lovable and enjoys sun bathing 😆
A doberman was not bred for being a guard dog it's one of the only dogs bred for personal protection

I guess it was a Berger De Picard, not a Briard. And when we have the audio mention Deerhound, it shows a borzoi walking on the leash.
Hoping to see a video on Teckels! Basically it’s a working dachshund for hunting.
I would also add that I'm just as critical of breeds that I loved such as the working line German Shepherd.. the American Showline German Shepherd looks like a joke according to what show breeders have done. They've taken one of the best working dogs in the world and reduced it to a frog that cannot walk well.
Fortunately the working lines still have retained a nice stuck in the stomach, not over sized, longer back legs and less hind-leg angulation, and a very gentle slope in the croup, not a slanted or curved croup. This is important for orthopedics, function, agility, and endurance.

I know it seems that way, but he showed pit bulls at the end in the terrier category. I personally think having a bulldog section would have been nice, and the pit bull could have been placed there as a catch dog. Based on mighty fine videos done on this channel, folks like Mr. Richard Stratton say pit bulls are bulldogs.

That "Briard" was actually a Berger Picard or Picardy Shepherd. Also you started strong with the types of work and wavered into groups of dogs. "Sighthounds" are a group of dogs, not a type of work. I guess "sighthounds' was meant to imply the type of work they do, which you describe.

I remember you did a TOP 10 MOST POWERFUL DOGS couple of years and you ranked cane corso @ #10 and rottie @ #4.The next year you also did the same top 10 most powerful dogs but those rottie and corso were not included lol.Pls be consistent next time👍
Rottweilers aren't common herding dogs, nor are they categorized as such. They are a working dog, so it would be pointless to say rottweilers are a common herding dog when it's extremely seldom they herd (even though it was their original purpose, I know).

The "Briard" you showed was a Berger Picard.
The "Irish Setter" you showed was just a red, field-bred Golden Retriever.
The "Scottish Deerhound" you showed was another Borzoi.
The "Airedale Terrier" you showed was a Lakeland Terrier.
All of these breeds are wonderful breeds in their own right. Why not just use their actual names instead of trying to lie and/or deceive your audience (who are no doubt dog nerds like myself) into thinking they are another. Nobody would be angry if you just used their real names???
