Now I'm not into valheim as a player cause well I don't own it.
However it does impress me. This mod especially.
Anyways is the valheim team not considered indie? If so I also imagine since valheim kinda dies in popularity they may be running off income and revenue to stay afloat, meaning they may not have the resources to hire anyone new.
They could however at the least reach out to this guy and his team and collaborate or partner with them for a deal or something.

The thing about Valheim, which is the game I'm playing most right now, is that it's unplayable multiplayer. The netcode is so garbage it simply can't be played with friends reliably or be enjoyable. Apparently the reason no one can fix the lag is because you would have to recode the entire game from the ground up to fix it.

The Devs dont respect the modding community of Valheim at all. No mod tools, regularly putting own the tiniest little updates (to bugs) that constantly break mods (rather than bundling several bug fixes together), and any mod-discussion is relegated to the very bottom of the Valheim discord, like the red-headed stepchild Irongate sees them as. One of my buddies is a modder and he came up with a netcode fix that allows up to 100 people to play on his server. His main job is programming for a fortune 500 company.
He tried to share his code with Irongate and they flatout ignored / refused to give him the time of day. Their "vision" is a game for 10 or less players and they refuse to expand their vision to accommodate what players have been clamoring for from this game.

I used to set up Dungeons on Minecraft MP Servers which only used the script blocks and other functionality available in vanilla MC. I had a Temple for a sun god which you could enter by two ways. Either in the middle of the day when the sun was highest and the hidden door in the shrine was open where you could then beat the temple and get a bunch of loot at the end. Other way was in the middle of the night when the hidden door was closed but you could give up an item in prayer at the shrine to pray for day and the game would detect the needed item, clear it and force day. Then the secret door would open to the temple but the temple would be way harder. When you finished the temple this way you got a tripled enchanted bow. Thought it would be cool to have a bow that conditionally deals more damage when the sun is up.
I made sure players couldn't destroy the temple by forcing adventure mode near one of the structures. That way players even could find the hidden dungeons or hidden locations in the open world. It was fun. Had shoes hidden in a mountain range that were enchanted to have the wearer not take fall damage up to ~100 blocks. And some cursed items too that said they were enchanted but the enchantment was negative so you would take damage from falling two blocks. I had the time of my life with making up stuff like this.

Hey Asmon, keep in mind that when you said moders are better than the dev team for diablo, you gotta keep in mind that these diablo devs be making the game from scratch. Meaning, somewhat fresh animations, ui/hud, mechanics, level design, story and much more. These moders are expanding on a game that’s been already created, they have their base. All of the work has been done already for them, so all they have to do is just expand the game with already made everything. Re-using assets already made by the devs does not mean they are better than the actual devs themselves. Anyway, still agree on how these moders are talented! 👍

    • @lilbeartv9039
      @lilbeartv9039 6 місяців тому +1

That literally doesn’t matter, it’s the sheer fact that in games like Diablo you can tell there isn’t much passion effort put into the game. Now that can be due to a multitude of reasons, some outside most of the devs control but it doesn’t excuse the fact that some title that either should have been great from the start or started off great but lost its dev teams passion ends up falling on non paid molders to come in and fix/polish a product .

  • @-average
    @-average 5 місяців тому

The lag he's referring to is related to the level of detail and base complexity - as you grow your base/town, so do the elements your CPU and GPU have to render, this causes the FPS drop as the workload is increased. But depending on your monitor, if you have gsync/freesync enabled, this could smoothen out the image when you're moving, even with lower FPS than usual.

just a bit of context on why games take longer and are more expensive than this mode.
    1) this mod is just built on top of existing code, they did not have to develop new game systems to make this work. They did not have to go through extensive testing, and all of that.
    2) the team was small, so there would have been minimal back and fourth getting things approved etc.(ie it takes more time to steer a larger ship than a small boat.)
    3) If this team were to take on a from scratch game, even if it were more or less an exact copy of this, for example, in Unreal Engine, it would take them several years to get to this point.
Games like Diablo have hundreds of team members because the game systems are more complex, and a purpose built to what they were designed to do. Diablo is a linear, non-sandbox game, where Valheim is a sandbox, and a bit more flexible by design. You could make the argument that maybe all games need to have a core sandbox design, but that is generally a waste of time if you never intend to use it.

I think a huge shout out to the valheim devs is in order. Just hoping there is something they can do to optimize the code for less lag on big builds. Maybe a “commit” option so the world has all the stuff built into it committed to it, and isn’t processing both at the same time.
. Even if this thing never gets great, it really is an example of what could be done. Imagine if a studio leased the engine to do a fully funded project. Akin to all the amazing games that came from ID software’s doom and quake engines.

This is amplified by the custom large builds. as you know the more instances in the area, the worse the game runs. Unfortunately the network config is baked into Valheim, so unless the devs of the game improve or change it for dedicated servers, not much will fix it. I am still hopeful and excited to try out the final build stuff thou.
