    These song lyrics reference Joni Mitchell's "Furry Sings the Blues," Tori Amos being done wrong by the justice system in a sexual assault case, Marilyn Monroe overdosing, and Nina Simone's musical career suffering because of her civil rights activism. This is an incredible, sympathetic, and reverent ode to the women who paved the way for trailblazers like Annie to conquer the world, and it's gorgeous. ♡

    To me, this song is about how St. Vincent views her idols as much stronger than herself, and having to put up with far greater obstacles. She’s not honest. She’s not a survivor. She’s just a “benzo beauty queen.” Of course, I don’t share the same view (I ❤️ St. Vincent,) but she’s being typically sardonic and self-effacing. She’s saying even the fact that she’s a role model is a sign that the world is ending. But as the song closes, the voices of these great, female figures are encouraging her not to sink into despondency. So what if the world is ending? It’s just the melting of the sun.

      I agree with a lot of this, but I’m not sure she’s talking about the literal end of the world. It’s obvious she’s aware of the cult that’s built up around her, that she’s some sort of “sun” idol. The melting is another metamorphosis she’s going through, a new persona she’s adopted for this phase of her career. She gets just as much pleasure from the varied reactions of her adherents to these transformations as she gets from creating them in the first place. I admit I wasn’t a huge fan of her last record; I know folks who hated the self-titled album and wished she’d go back to being the cute and cloying performer who’d interact with her audiences directly. I don’t know; this comment might be some self-delusional bullshit, but I like it, and no who matters in my life will ever read it.

    • @scottbassis4420
      @scottbassis4420 3 роки тому +14

      @@andrewraymond3657 I like your interpretation. After a few days thinking the song over, I agree that St. Vincent may be the sun herself, as implied in the video. It’s “melting” is about her own self-destruction, rather than the actual end of the world. I think the pandemic was influencing my perspective. It also explains why the apparent suicide of “Jane” in Malibu opens the song. It’s a warning sign that she doesn’t heed. Celebrity is destructive. I think you picked up on the fact that she’s not watching the sun herself, she’s watching us watch it, which would suggest it is herself as well. I’ve been a fan of St. Vincent since Marry Me and found each album better than the last. I love that we can analyze her lyrics endlessly. Can’t wait for the new one.

      This is a good read, but I take the line "melting of the sun" somewhat differently. I think "the melting of the sun" here represents the imminent end to a long era of oppressive patriarchy that unjustly weighed upon all the women in this song. St. Vincent, to a certain degree, "missed that party." She "heard the gun" but was "slow to run." To remark that "St. Joni ain't no phony," implies that St. Vincent see herself as something of a phony, someone who "never cried" but instead "lied" to spare herself that same suffering. The sun is what humanity's understanding of our existence literally revolves around. That heliocentrism is analogous to our own patriarchal society where men have long been at the centre of everything. Thus, the melting of the sun represents not the literal end of the world, but the end of a particular societal worldview. St. Vincent wants to experience the catharsis of being able to watch her idols witness that age come to an end, because she believes they are the ones who have truly earned that honour, not some "benzo beauty queen."

    In response to something someone else posted but needs a fuller airing outside that thread; I’m not sure she’s talking about the literal end of the world. It’s obvious she’s aware of the cult that’s built up around her, that she’s some sort of “sun” idol. The melting is another metamorphosis she’s going through, a new persona she’s adopted for this phase of her career. She gets just as much pleasure to the varied reactions of her adherents to these transformations as she gets from creating them in the first place.

The vibe, the rebellion the taste of Hendrix in your playing and your almost Prince feel to your sound.
