    Do any of you "bag it" guys stop to think that 30 minutes after he's gone there is another carpet of leaves there, from the trees as well as his neighbors' lawns where they blow in. So a few fragments aren't even noticeable. And the customer may prefer more cash in his pocket than a pristine lawn. A final pass with a bagger or mulching deck would be preferable, but he's the one with the $10,000 mower. He's doing something right.

    Try the Eliminator blades from Scag. Better metal, twin cut and one pass with a chute blocker plate. Tall grass or leaves it changed my world.

    Mulching Kit, with Special Mulching Blades would make the difference, discharge is not a good solution for leaves.

    2nd best option if you don't have a full mulch kit, and this is only possible with dry leaves

    What kind of blades?

  • @brucec43

    I use this same technique on some lawns. However, for a better finishing touch, consider getting them to the center then tossing a bagger on for the final passes It's so reduced by then the volume will be manageable. Otherwise, use a true mulching deck, which will shoot those leaves down to turf level, making them nearly invisible. Having to make so many passes over the center of the lawn to get them small enough not to show you risk really beating the turf down.

      +Bruno TaTa Could you or anyone answer this question. I have a 60" Exmark Pioneer. I have blocked the chute off with plywood. I mowed some leaves, and noticed them coming out from under the mower. Will mulching blades make a difference? The Exmark mulching kit is expensive, at $330. I've already taken care of the chute. Do I really want the baffles on the mower? Next year I plan to mow some yards. I would hate to install mulching baffles and then regret it as a waste of money and have to take them off. And since I hope to mow in rural area's, I don't want to get into bagging acres of leaves. I have plenty of experience with city lots and 20 inch mulching mowers. Thanks

      +Mark Mullen did you get your answer?

    • @JesusIsaFlatEarther
      @JesusIsaFlatEarther 8 років тому

      Thomas Santana Not from anyone on UA-cam. I bought an Advanced Chute System from Bad Boy mowers. I had to modify my deck and spindle cover for it to sit flush on the deck, where it needed to be. They include spacers, but that just moves the chute up in the air, and it then was not flush with the bottom of the deck. I should have went with the Exmark model specific chute system.
      But I love my Advanced Chute. And even more since I bought my little John Deere Z335e. It's a 42 inch, with a mulching kit that has a built in chute blocker, operated with a handle on the deck. Basically a mulch on demand want-a-be. It works great when the grass is dry and at the right height. But when it's wet, the mulching kit, even tho the flap is open to side discharge, the opening gets clogged. I was so excited when I first got this mower, because I liked to mulch when I was in Texas. But the disadvantage of it clogging up isn't worth having it, since I now live in the north east, where the grass always seems to be wet before noon.
      I now I know ,that having a wind row isn't a big deal at all, since I just have the one big mower. The only way I would ever put a mulching kit on a mower now, is if it could be a dedicated mulching mower. And if conditions didn't warrant using it, I wouldn't.
      The little Deere really gives a good cut. And since it has a mulching kit on it. I will maybe use it to clean up the wind rows the Exmark makes with just a chute blocker in the fall.

    Running a 1,000 lbs mower back and forth just to grind up leaves? Ruts, soil compaction, etc.
    Use a bagger!

    to many leaves to mulch. bad for the lawn. causes thatch & drainage problems. it can cause fungus and insect issues. a small amount is ok but that's to much. even if you have gator blades its to much. i always trailer the leaves away for my customers. i always bag grass clippings in the spring and fall as well. cant believe you are still in business.

    This is terrible for the health of the lawn. Oak leaves acidify the pH of the soil, which causes yellow grass. Real landscapers always bag leaves

    • @daflea66
      @daflea66 10 років тому +1

      He is not incorrect. The pH is affected by adding that much acidic leaf to your soil food web. Shredding some in is great, but you really should be removing mass quantities. Also, driving over the lawn on a 1300lb machine that much each visit is compacting the living hell out of the soil and tree roots. The finished lawn looks great though, I am not knocking anything except the "this is the best way" belief.
      Remove 80% of heavy drop, shred in the rest, lime it to compensate for the oak leaves, and save all those passes worth of compaction. I could have blown those to the curb and vac'd them up in less time than all that shredding.

    • @daflea66
      @daflea66 10 років тому

      Mowing once a week is different from mowing the same spots 5 or more times on the same visit, especially in the fall when the soil is damp.
      I'm familiar with the studies. All of them, not just the ones that say it's fine to shred limitless leaves into the same plot of turf.
      Collect heavy coverage, shred light to moderate coverage, and disperse it every. This windrow and shred practice builds up too much over an entire autumn drop. Limited air penetrates a half inch of leaf shred, leaf mold over winter develops, and it doesn't break down nearly fast enough once temperatures drop.

    • @brucec43
      @brucec43 9 років тому +1

      Get real, Pete. You don't even know what the soil ph is there to begin with. Some areas of the nation it's naturally alkaline. And acid soil is nothing a $4 bag of lime can't fix. He can have that lawn done at half the labor cost vs bagging them all. Plus he doesn't have to haul them, or spend thousands on vac systems. If your customers knew how much extra they were paying you they'd flip out. This "fake landscaper" has PLCAA certification and 22 years in the biz.
