Bless you, I’ve had a similar experience learning skills on UA-cam when I was a wee lass and it’s been such a calming, fun constant in my life. Stay curious, you’re doing great.
is that so! me too ... can't hear well and I always need subtitle to understand. I also love to knit and crotchet and was looking for new patterns. let's be friend ☺
Watched your video & found the perfect stitch to make potholders. I will knit two squares and crochet them together. Thank you for making easy to understand tutorials
Yes - I always like to use the shortest needles possible, especially when I just have a few stitches, like the swatches I knit in these demonstrations. And DPNs are the shortest!
Lindsay Green - to work this in the round (I haven't test knit this, but I think it's pretty straight-forward): Round 1 (right side): *Knit 1, slip 1 with yarn in front*, repeat between the * across to end of round. Row 2: *slip 1 with yarn in front, Knit 1*, repeat between the * across to end of round
This is a great stitch for bow ties and long ties. Making several bow ties using this stitch for a milestone birthday boy. They are turning out great! Using DK weight and size 3 needles. No curling, and they're looking great!
Your videos are so helpful. They are by far the best explanation for the different stitches. I really like the way that you break everything down and give helpful hints and advice. I just subscribed! Thank you so much.
Hi Andrea - I'm not sure I understand your question, but is your question with alternating the two colors for stripes? It's really no different in-the-round or flat...just pick up the other color of yarn every two rows, no need to cut the yarn each time.
This pattern looks so neat, especially with the 2 alternating colors. I think I'll wait to try this until after I teach myself to knit continental style. All of that moving yarn around will go really slowly with the way I knit now (throwing).
Thankyou for this. I'm going to make a wide band across a triangle shawl in this in dk yarn using larger needles. I think it will make a nice border. Thanks again! (Love your videos, they really help!)
I am a newbie to knitting but i tried this and loved the thick weave look altho the colors didn't quite zigzag, but I still love the feel of this double/sided knit result. It is like I have two sides to the swatch I just made. I am sure I will figure out the interweave look soon. Thanks for teaching this :)
You can count stitches on the right side of the work - each V is a knit stitch, and each "dash" is a slipped stitch. So, working carefully across one row, you count Vs and dashes.
i am using your excellent instructions for a shoulder strap for a yoga bag. Wow I cannot believe how many times I have to rip out rows (luckily they are short) constantly finding errors on this simple stitch, and I am only doing one color. I cannot begin to imagine how to go down to make a correction, this is so hard to read what's required, simple as it is, I go unconscious and make mistakes. The written really helped me re-start and get back in rhythm. Hmmmm, very humbling.
This makes a very interesting fabric…yes, more like woven on the “right” side. I practiced using leftover acrylic yarn and size 9 needles. I added an edge and made a stack of quite useful coasters, more attractive in 2 colors, that lie perfectly flat. I think this fabric in a variegated “tweedy” wool yarn would make a handsome man’s vest. I wish I were talented enough to make or adapt a pattern.
Vortica - I have not experimented with shaping this stitch, but I believe there are patterns out there for adding increases and decreases, if you google it.
@thejfamtravels Increases and decreases could cause lumps and bumps, depending on what you're doing. But the linen stitch should still lie flat without curling, if that's what you mean.
The solid color swatch was knit with a yarn that is no longer available - but simple enough to find a substitution. It's 100% wool, worsted weight. Hope that helps!
Stockinette stitch is always going to curl. Depending on you gauge and the thickness of the fiber, adding an icord border may or may not help. You would have to test it out. :)
Hello! Thank you for posting these beautifully clear and explained videos! They've helped so much!! Do you have, somewhere, a video of the linen stitch done in the two colors where you switch back and forth between them? It's the 1:37 pattern in the video. I'm ready for more of a challenge (comfortable with knit/purl and would like to move on to more interesting 'stuff' ;) ) and after making place mats and coasters, I'd like to make a purse in this pattern. To learn, I have to go over and over and over the video of what I'm trying to learn as I'm not at all coordinated...... I know this is still in the super easy stage, but for me, right now, working with TWO colors is quite daunting! But it's just GORGEOUS, so I gotta figure it out! :) I'm going to look on your videos and find out how to make a cowl... if that's one that you've done... THANK YOU FOR HELPING ALL OF US LEARN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry - without seeing your work, I'm not able to guess what might have gone wrong. But I do know this - most people who make mistakes with this stitch aren't keeping careful track of their rows. Using a row counter (or tally marks on paper) might help. Good luck!
@thejfamtravels You could, but it would be easy to lose track of which stitch you were on, and end up slipping where you should knit, and vice versa. You'd have to work the increases/decreases in pairs, preferably right next to each other, to maintain the stitch.
You're welcome. There is some confusion with what is moss stitch and what is seed stitch, because Brits and Americans call them different things. In my understanding this video (Linen Stitch) is a different thing entirely. :)
How do you count stitches for gauge in linen stitch? Do you count on the RS or WS? Do you count just the "frowns" on the purl side? Do you count the "V's" and dashes on the knit side? Help. Thank you for the amazing tutorials, you have helped me teach myself to knit!!!
@spunkydru I already have a video for that - UA-cam won't let me give you a link here in the comments, but you can go to my channel page and search for "Knitting Help - Flicking". I slowly show how I hold the yarn when I knit, which is called "flicking".
I do have a Fair Isle pattern and tutorial available, as well as another pattern that is not a tutorial. I can't give you a link here in the comments, but you can visit my website for my "Learn to Knit Fair Isle" hat tutorial, as well as my "Mad Men Mittens" pattern. Hope that helps!
@TheMamaPowell Yes - this stitch will work for dish towels and dish cloths. You can try knitting up a bit, then you may need to adjust your needle size to make sure the fabric isn't too thick and dense. The samples I show in the video are maybe a bit dense for dish cloths or dish towels.
What's the name of the pattern for your neck piece? Is lovely. Great explanation and tutorial. Thank you very much for starting on the first row. Almost every video on the linen stich has been after its been worked up many rows. I could never figure out or find how to begin. Very grateful.
Staci, I'm not sure why, but I found tinking my linen stitch to be very difficult. Do you have any tips on how to best make corrections when working with this beautiful stitch pattern? Thanks in advance (if you do respond). ;-)
Aloha Staci! I love this! I am making placemats in two colors alternating every other row in cotlin. I just realized that I made about five inches of mistake about an inch down. I gave to rip it out, don't I? I'm hoping you'll say there's a quick fix....
i have a question. i cast on an even number of stitches, and the last stitch in a repeat (and the row) is a slip stitch. how do i handle the slip stitch at the end of the row? when i start the next row, it just doesn't seem right for the slipped stitch to be sitting there alone, with the yarn not engaged in the slipped stitch. thank you. i go to you for all explanations.
So if I’d like to skip the first stitch to have a nice broader looking edge I would just add 1 to my cast on and skip the first stitch each time. Correct?
This will work for a scarf ? Is it flexible enough for a soft scarf ? It looks as though it might not be 'soft' enough or flexible enough. I have some very 'earthy' wool created by women in South America as a way to support their people. It is too earthy for a complicated or formal pattern. I am looking for more 'woven' and natural styles or the linen stitch. This looks kind of earthy and natural on the right side and a bit more formal on the wrong/pearl side giving it both looks. I am on the hunt for 'earthy' and natural looking stitches for this great wool made by women un Uraguay.
Does anyone have any tips on linen stitch with stranded knitting colorwork. Im not sure how to put the correct color on my current stitch if it is a slip stitch. (If that doesn't make sense, If the color I am supposed to knit next is red, but on the slip stitch, form the previous row the color is yellow, without messing up the stitch pattern, is it possible to make it red) [If not does anyone know any linen stitch line stitch patterns that is not reliant on slip stitches]
Hello! As always, very nice video, really clear. Have you ever done a tutorial on the anemone stitch?. If not, I think it will be awesome to do one :D Have a great day anyway!
Out of curiosity how would this stitch work for wash cloths. I like the standard wash cloth you have previously demonstrated but I am making a set of towels and wash cloths for a wedding gift. Would this work for towels/wash cloths? Thanks!
Hello, and thank you for all the knitting help! I'm trying to follow your instructions for the linen stitch bind off. If I do as the instructions say and '*Knit 1, slip 1, bind-off 1* repeat to last stitch,' that leaves stitches on the needle. I tried Knit 1, bind-off 1, sl 1, bind-off 1, but that didn't seem to work either. Any advice? Thank you.
Hello. I am new to knitting (only know the basics), but would like to know how to knit a specific knitting patter that I seen. I have a picture of that work and I believe it is quite easy to knit it. Would it be possible to send you a picture and get an advice how to do it?
Your bind off is *K1, Slip 1, BO 1*. This doesn't seem to add up. K1, Slip 1, BO 1 = 1 stitch on RH ndl. Then repeat K1, Slip 1, BO 1 = 2 sts on RH ndl. Please help.
Hi! I'm hoping to do the zig-zag pattern on a set of gloves that calls for the linen stitch (the Treads pattern on Ravelry), but I'm having trouble figuring out how to translate the "2 rows of color A, 2 rows of color B" into an in-the-round situation. Any ideas?
I'm 11 and your videos helped me learn to knit I've did your dish cloth and just finished the linen stich very simple
And you are now 20, and I hope you keep up with knitting.
Bless you, I’ve had a similar experience learning skills on UA-cam when I was a wee lass and it’s been such a calming, fun constant in my life.
Stay curious, you’re doing great.
You have no idea how many people you’ve enabled to discover their love of knitting. I’m one so thank you so much!
Thank you for English subtitles as I am Deaf. I love knitting and crochet. You are good at teaching the knitting. Keep your work up.
is that so! me too ... can't hear well and I always need subtitle to understand. I also love to knit and crotchet and was looking for new patterns. let's be friend ☺
Here it is, 19 years down the road and I'm using your post for my first linen stitch project in 50+ years! Keep up the good work!
You are the easiest teacher to follow and your tips/suggestions are so helpful. Thanks

I just love this stitch. Both right and wrong side. Thank you.

Your videos are very informative and come with the written instructions. THANK YOU
Love the scarf you have on ....I have bought couple of your patterns....love your teachings too.....thanks
Wow, I really like this! I heard linen stitch is really tedious but it doesn’t look too bad!
I make this pattern small and they make fantastic make up remover/face cloth. You have the super soft side and the rough scrubby side.
I made attractive and useful coasters, using up leftover yarn.
This pattern looks so neat, especially with the 2 alternating colors. I think I'll wait to try this until after I teach myself to knit continental style. All of that moving yarn around will go really slowly with the way I knit now (throwing).

i absolutely looove the one with the alternating colors and am working on some fall placemats now :D

Great video! I can see a lot of possibilities with this stitch. Thanks for sharing it with us!

Thank you☺

That is a bigger question than I can answer here in the comments. I would actually need to write out a pattern for that.
I Love this! Thank you! :)
I really like this
Nice technique. I will try it. Thanks!
Five inches of mistake? Yes, that sounds significant enough to warrant ripping out, and trying again!
Do you knit/purl the purls/knits or knit/purl the slip stitches? Lovely tutorial! Long time watcher, first-time commenter. :)
How do you count stitches for gauge in linen stitch? Do you count on the RS or WS? Do you count just the "frowns" on the purl side? Do you count the "V's" and dashes on the knit side? Help.
Thank you for the amazing tutorials, you have helped me teach myself to knit!!!
Thank you, love the use of two colours. Now I want to do that instead of my original idea!
Love the "zig-zaggy" stitch!

Yes - creating custom patterns is a service I can offer. Please message me privately if you'd like to learn more about pricing and timeline.
I finally made it
Lovely work! Thank you so much!
I like your hair!
Thank you!
love this stich can't. whait. to. try
Thank you...

MNWildRose will
Aloha Staci! I love this! I am making placemats in two colors alternating every other row in cotlin. I just realized that I made about five inches of mistake about an inch down. I gave to rip it out, don't I? I'm hoping you'll say there's a quick fix....
I have a bajillion ideas, now!! :D
Haha - thank you! :)
can you give me some guidance on "tinking" the linen stitch? thank you.
WAIT !!!! When one slips a stitch at the end of the "purl " row how does one start the next row??? I AM SO CONFUSED!!!
This is all explained in the free pattern. Just follow the link in the video description to get your copy.
Fantastic. Thank you!
If done in the round, would I just purl/sl each row?
@verypinkknits
Thank you for replying so quickly! :) One more question: Do you think the piece would still lie flat with the increases and decreases?
What does it mean to start on the wrong side
i have a question. i cast on an even number of stitches, and the last stitch in a repeat (and the row) is a slip stitch. how do i handle the slip stitch at the end of the row? when i start the next row, it just doesn't seem right for the slipped stitch to be sitting there alone, with the yarn not engaged in the slipped stitch.

It is not a very flexible fabric. It would make a nice garment, such as a vest, if you can adapt or create a pattern.
Excellent
Would this make for a nice scarf? What do you think?
Great tutorial. What is the pattern for the scarf you are wearing please?
Can you make a video with this stitch in double stranded??
Does anyone have any tips on linen stitch with stranded knitting colorwork. Im not sure how to put the correct color on my current stitch if it is a slip stitch.

Hello! As always, very nice video, really clear. Have you ever done a tutorial on the anemone stitch?. If not, I think it will be awesome to do one :D Have a great day anyway!
How could I do an increase and a decrease with this stitch? Is it possible? :)
So on the rows you're knitting you're slipping every other stitch purlwise and vice versa?
I've tried the written bind of, doesn't work for me, can you please show us in a video PLEASE ?
Out of curiosity how would this stitch work for wash cloths. I like the standard wash cloth you have previously demonstrated but I am making a set of towels and wash cloths for a wedding gift. Would this work for towels/wash cloths? Thanks!
Is there a video on how to fix a mistake in linen stitch?
Hello, and thank you for all the knitting help! I'm trying to follow your instructions for the linen stitch bind off. If I do as the instructions say and '*Knit 1, slip 1, bind-off 1* repeat to last stitch,' that leaves stitches on the needle. I tried Knit 1, bind-off 1, sl 1, bind-off 1, but that didn't seem to work either. Any advice? Thank you.
After working a K1 and a Slip 1, BO...alternate K1, BO and Slip 1, BO.
Does this stitch work well with increases and decreases? ....Say... for a sweater or something?
WHAT is the name of the pattern for the sweater on the mannequin???? LOVE the neckline.....I missed the entire intro due to this sweater....😊

How do you do a half linen stitch in the round
Hello. I am new to knitting (only know the basics), but would like to know how to knit a specific knitting patter that I seen. I have a picture of that work and I believe it is quite easy to knit it. Would it be possible to send you a picture and get an advice how to do it?
I castes on 10. When I did the "2nd row" and I turned, the stitch before it had the working yarn through the loop is it supposed to be this
Your bind off is *K1, Slip 1, BO 1*. This doesn't seem to add up. K1, Slip 1, BO 1 = 1 stitch on RH ndl. Then repeat K1, Slip 1, BO 1 = 2 sts on RH ndl. Please help.
Every time you get two stitches on the RH needle, bind-off one over the other. So, K1, SL1, BO1; K1, BO1, SL1, BO1, K1, BO1, SL1, BO1, etc.
What yarn did you use for the first solid color swatch? I think I would in fact like to knit placemats that look just like that!
My LTC always looks terrible! Can I use a different cast on? Thanks, Stacey.
Now if I could only see this in continental 😩
The technique is the same, regardless of which hand you use to hold the working yarn.
can i use a cable cast on on this
oh I forgot to mention I am working in 2" stripes of many different colors. Thanx
Hi! I'm hoping to do the zig-zag pattern on a set of gloves that calls for the linen stitch (the Treads pattern on Ravelry), but I'm having trouble figuring out how to translate the "2 rows of color A, 2 rows of color B" into an in-the-round situation. Any ideas?
