build engine is a little broken but blood, duke 3d and shadow warrior are just so full of character like the designers really gave a shit. i wish that was still a thing
John Carmack once said that he thought Duke Nukem 3D looked like it was held together with chewed gum, and he couldn't really see why people liked it. He's completely right in that DN3D is held together with chewed gum, but the game is so fun, and the presentation so great, it kind of excuses it.
@@0neDoomedSpaceMarine He also complimented the guy that wrote the Build Engine on his own, Ken Silverman. "If I had to pick who I think is just the most talented, it would probably be Ken Silverman, the guy that did the BUILD engine. He does engines and tools. He's great as an editor. He writes all the code for everything, and he's just extremely talented."
Michael Persico Duke Nukem had different strengths though. If you look at Quake, it's real 3D graphics with real 3D levels, but as said, this was taxing on computers at the time, so detailing would have to be rained in a little. The result is that in some ways, the game's locales can come off as oddly empty, however, Quake is a game with abstract level design, and with a little bit of an odd horror theme, so that it sometimes feels barren is actually quite suitable, considering the otherworldly monsters that inhabit these places. Looking at Duke, it's a sector based 2.5D game, not unlike (yet still different), from Doom, except years later, where people would have more than powerful enough computers for a game like Doom. So the graphics and rendering is simpler, and what do they do? They detail the everloving fuck out of the levels; there's garbage cans, coffee cups on desks and counters, chairs, lamps, bottles and jars, grafitti and posters on walls, barrels, trees, fire hydrants, fire extinguishers, fire itself, water fountains, toilets, mirrors... I could go on and on. There's all this detailing used to make locations look more livable and authentic, many of them can be interacted with or destroyed, and a lot of them will have an effect on gameplay when you do that. It does a lot for immersion.

You were lucky around 8:25 that any hornet didnt flew into path of your nuke missile
I need to remember to keep hitting ur like button. Love ur sense of humor dude.
I love learning about these tasteless gems from Civvie
Are you implying that Lo Wang was not a pioneer for equality in gaming?
Tasteless? Ooh boy
Being honest, not knowing about Shadow Warrior beforehand puts you just above smegma on the scale of human waste products.
@@The_Crimson_Fucker i wouldnt approach towards people that didnt know the game like that, some people didnt get to be raised around dos games like you and i might have been

I wasn't raised around them either, but if you engage in video games you're going to come across mention of it. It's not as famous as Doom but it's still common knowledge - they even made a couple of really nice(albeit completely different style) remakes.
this is literally the first time i found Civvie! Lol I love how silly he is here too with his wit and humor vibes like the game he's playing too :D
Anyone watching this and thinking of getting Shadow Warrior, buy the Classic Redux version. Trust me, $10 well spent, plays SO much better;)
I have really fond memories of this game, I won a copy on a local TV show. You had to send a letter to win a Nintendo 64, and the runner ups get to pick a PC game. I remember I wanted a N64 to play GoldenEye, I didn't get the first prize but the 3rd tho. I got a call asking what game I chose, I picked Shadow Warrior because the TV presenter always said the name in this really racist accent... oh god it was so funny.
I played Shadow Warrior a lot of course, I got Duke Nukem and Blood because of it, remember reading on a magazine about the "holy trinity" of the build engine.
7:59 me any time a bee comes near me.
I'm sure it looks just as goofy.
I love how UA-cam seems to think every retro-game is Doom (1993)
