  • Artist Michael Markowsky investigates the death of Canada's greatest artist Tom Thomson (August 5, 1877 - July 8, 1917). This video, along with 34 small ink drawings, 3 large 10x18 foot ink drawings, and the reconstructed face of the man found in Tom Thomson's supposedly 'empty' grave in Mowat Cemetery in 1956, are all currently on view at the Tom Thomson Art Gallery in Ontario until May 14, 2017: tomthomson.org
Here's a great article in the National Post newspaper (January 27, 2017) about my exhibition: news.nationalpost.com/news/can...
Video shot and edited by Michael Markowsky between July 2016 and January 2017.

Hi Chris! Thank you for watching the video! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Knowing the story certainly makes Algonquin Park an even more interesting (if that's possible) place to be!

    My Name is Rob Spratt.
There is a story in my family that Mr Thomson was, on occasion, would be found passed out intoxicated in the larder on a neighbouring logging camp that my great great grandfather owned and ran. On the last occasion it is said that my great great grandfather told Mr Thomson while physically removing him from the larder that if he caught him drinking his booze again, he would sink him in Canoe lake .
Knowing and being one of the men in my family, it was not an idle threat. I would hate to think that but have to assume that indeed my great great grandfather killed Canada's most famous artist .
I think of Tom and my great great grandfather ( and sadly now Gord) every time we perform The Tragically Hip's - Three Pistols.
Peace Love & Rock n Roll

that's about as good a theory as the one i have about Tom Thomson never having died on Canoe lake or in Algonquin Park... proving these theories is where we fail to provide facts ... you have to understand the times in which the Group of Seven and their associates were living. They were mostly war artists with commercial art skills that guys like Lord Beaverbrook used to promote war propaganda when the British allies were trying to eliminate the Ottoman threat in the Palestinian limits. By the end of World War I the Ottoman Empire was dissolved after having survived nearly 800 years. Their last fight was as allies of the Germans who were a threat to the Russian, British and other western powers who signed stuff like the Sykes Picot Agreement and the Balfour Declaration as they moved towards taking control of the middle east which ironically enough was the goal of the crusaders in middle ages.
No.. i am suggesting that Tom Thomson was initiated into the warriors society from meetings in the park and that he was sent out on top level spy missions under the understanding that his name would never be heard again ( James Bond stuff... Jason Bourne stuff ... ) ... go figure ... Beaverbrook was the one who broke the news to A. Y. Jackson who was sitting in a London area hospital bed. Did anyone take pics of this meeting !!!! Harris was no starving artist. He was heir of the Harris ( Massey ) fortune which was based on farm machinery ( tools that could be implemented as wartime weapons )... you gots to dig deeper man to see the devil in the details..
Maybe your ancestor really did end his life or he may have been the guy who initiated him. I have a similar theory about one of my ancestors having shot the arrow or spear that fatally ended the life of King Richard in 1199. Don't make it so but still interesting 🤓🙈🙉🙊

My nephew is his reincarnation. He was definitely in a fight and fell and hot his head on a grate in the fireplace. My nephew is named Tomas Z jr. So he s literally Tom son of Tom, Tom Tom's son
