    The guitar player was Terry Kath (1946 - 1978). He was truly an amazing guitar player and his death was tragic. He accidently shot himself in the head with what he truly believed was an unloaded gun. I have always said that the most dangerous weapon in the world is "the unloaded gun" but that's another discussion altogether, right? You might enjoy "Free Form Guitar" from the same "CTA" record. "Free Form Guitar" is just Terry with his Fender Stratocaster plugged directly into a Marshall stack and he goes wild. Again, one of the most under appreciated guitarists in all of rock & roll.

    This (and I'm a Man) are from the debut album. A tour de force. Two other "album" tracks you might listen to are "Introduction" which serves to introduce the sounds you will hear on the rest of the double album. Then, if you feel like an extensive guitar jam, put on "Liberation".
    The to hear what got played on the radio, take in "Does Anyone Know What Time It Is".

    Just one guitar there, the legendary Terry Alan Kath (r.i.p.) also on backup vocal. Peter Cetera on bass & backup vocal, Danny Seraphine on drums, Robert Lamm on keyboards & lead vocal. James Pankow on trombone, Lee Loughnane on trumpet, Walter Parazaider on sax. Seven dudes with insane talent.
    Now you know why when Jimi Hendrix saw them at the Whisky A Go-Go he told Walt, "You've got a horn section that sounds like one set of lungs, and a guitar player that's better than me. Wanna go out on tour together?". THAT is definitely the song to hear to experience the origins of Chicago. On the same album is "Introduction, written by and sung by Terry Kath, the first track of the album. Each performer gets a chance to shine individually on that track, fittingly introducing the world to Chicago.
    Thanks for the great reaction video to this track.

    Incidentally, I think the background singers are singing this over and over: "I...do...now...you". I could be wrong, but "I do" would likely mean the marital vow, and if the other bit truly says "now you" means he wants to marry her right then and there.

    Jay, that stank face at 8:54 says it all. This is the Chicago I know and love. Not the sappy love songs of the 80's and 90's. Granted they were successful with the sappy stuff, but Terry was the spiritual funky ass leader of the band, and his loss was evident.

    3:33 this song kills the tube vs transistor argument for me. The way he dials in is bad ass. Makes it feel live. There’s a version of machine gun by band of gypsies that also shows why vacuum tube amps are the best. That saturation.

    Bro, i think it might be time to take a dive into Jack White's music. You probably know a few of his songs from The White Stripes, like Seven Nation Army, but he has a ton of great stuff, and is one of the most underappreciated guitar gods. Check out the live version of Death Letter at Blackpool. Its a cover of a Son House blues song. You've seen slide guitar in rock songs before, but you will rarely see a slide guitar rock THIS hard.

    • @julianortiz4151
      @julianortiz4151 3 роки тому +2

      A lot of their 80s output was forgettable Pop drivel but there are quite a few gems on XIV, 16, and 17. After Cetera left the band they really weren’t going in the right direction until they got Keith Howland on guitar to bring back that Hard Rock edge that Terry Kath brought in the early days. They got better after they got rid of Bill Champlin. The current lineup is easily the best since the mid 70s. Even though they’re not producing much original content these days they are still worth checking out live. Caught them on the last two tours they did and was very impressed in spite of all the jaded “Boomer” reviews that were nothing less than insulting. I’ve been a fan of Chicago since the 70s. I grew up listening to them and am a musician myself. The reviews were trash from trash people. The bottom line is most people need to check stuff out for themself instead of relying on two word comments like “not good.”
