      They have been fixing them for the customer. However, I have read on the forums that some dealerships refuse to help. What Jeep/Stellantis needs to is twofold. first they need to warranty the issue more than the five years. I’ve read horror stories of blistering reoccurring a second time and usually by that time they are past the 5 year mark of Jeep covering it. Second and most importantly is that Jeep has to fix/resolve the underlying issue that causes this. It’s been happening since 2018 and here we are 6 model years later and the issue is still happening. I just wish potential customers were aware of the issue and no one would buy them until they fix the underlying issue. If sales tanked because of the stigma, maybe that would get their attention.

    How has this turned out for you, any updates? I paint custom cars and having similar issues with Jeeps only. I have read that the metal hinges on aluminum hoods causes a chemical reaction. Which I remember to be true with direct contact of the two metals, but don't remember it being an issue with paint in between. I also know that steel and aluminum flex differently, and direct to metal hinge contact can be an issue, and why most hinges on most cars are on the underside of the hood on much thicker metal that doesnt flex much, unlike the metal on top of a hood or door. A fix in the past as ive been painting since the early 80s, is to put a thin rubber gasket between the hood and hinges. Not sure if that would apply to the issues you have had. As I am wondering if it is a combination of issues? Anyways, I too am trying to learn more about these jeep issues and wonder what the fix was for your jeep? I have a feeling if it was just repair and paint alone, that in a few years when the warranty is up, the issue will come back.

    • @EverydayATV
      @EverydayATV  4 місяці тому

      It’s been a year and a half since the repaint. So far so good but I’m counting the days until it comes back. The 5 year paint and corrosion warranty expired in Jan 2024. Back in Jan 2023 when Jeep fixed it, the TSB only called for a repaint of the hood and doors. Not sure if new hinges were used or just repainted. The new TSB calls for replacement of the panels. They are now using shims under the hinges between the hinges and doors, however that will not take care of the blistering issue on the leading edges of the doors and hood as that is a different root cause.
      There is a forum on Facebook called “JL Corrosion Information” with now 18k members. It’s unreal how many people post per day with this issue.

    If you look at the hinge where it meets the door on a 2018 as opposed to a 2022 there is something separating the door from the hingeon the 22 that isnt on the 18. Cool observation. Thinking they are trying to separate the two dissimilar metals. Wondering if they are doing the same for the tailgate hinge. Unfortunately it still doesn’t solve the root cause for the blistering on the bottom of the door and on the front edge of the hood 😢. We’ll see how the repaint turns out when it goes in at the end of January and how long the fox will last. It’s a shame because the Wranglers have some of the nicest looking paint.

      @@jefftong3948 agreed. I could understand if there was an issue with some sort of painting process or aluminum contamination that they would have caught and corrected. They could have paid for fixing the ones that were affected just like they are doing now. However to ignore the root problem for 5 years of producing the JL and continue to roll them off the assembly line while turning their head the other way is just inexcusable. I did a long term review of my 8 year old all aluminum F-150 and the paint finish is still like new. On top of that, mine was built the first year they switched to aluminum and I’ve had no issues🤞

      I wasn’t aware of this issue when I bought my ‘22 gladiator but sure enough, very minor spots have formed on the hood around the hinges. As you mentioned with this issue being out there for at least 4 years this is crazy they haven’t changed the process, it’s not rocket science. I will say Ford has had their issues, maybe you are lucky with the f150 but several mustangs, explorers, and F150s have had problems.
      My opinion is stick with steel.; the weight savings of aluminum isn’t worth it if manufacturers can’t figure out how to prepare and paint it. I can live with the hood if that’s all it was, as fiberglass aftermarket replacements exist… the doors are another story.

    The early model JL’s seem to have corrosion and electrical issues. My son had so many issues with his 2019 he sold it and bought a Tundra.
    My JK required a thermostat replacement $40 and a gas cap replacement. Also $40. The JL’s have a lot more technology and a lot more problems too.
    I’m fortunate my JK is out of warranty because my local Jeep Dealership service department is a total joke. It took 18 months and a call to Jeep Corporate to get an air bag recall defect issue fixed. Every time I called the local dealer their service Dept. was supposedly booked up for months and therefore they were not accepting new appointments.
    When I contacted Jeep Corporate I somehow got an immediate appointment. Jeeps quality and service departments are a joke. Stellantis is ruining an American iconic vehicle.

      Unfortunately it’s all years of JL’s that are having the corrosion issue. It’s just a matter of time until it shows its ugly face. This is our first and last Jeep. Either going back to a Lexus GX or possibly a Ranger Raptor if and when the paint issue comes back.
      I wish everyone would wise up and boycott Jeep purchases. You would see then how fast Stellantis would solve the underlying issues. Unfortunately there are loyal Jeep owners that will never sway away from the brand.

    • @EverydayATV
      @EverydayATV  Рік тому +1

      I think the choice to repaint or replace is up to what the dealership and Jeep corporate decide on together. The process is that when you go to the dealer, they will take photos and contact corporate to authorize the repairs. I’ve heard some people say that they’ve had the affected panels replaced but most of what I’ve heard is that the existing panels are stripped and then repainted. If the dealership does not have their own body shop, then yes, they will work with a local body shop. My dealership actually ended up purchasing one of the local body shops for themselves. Not sure if that was done to handle are the JL paint repairs, but we did have a 4 month wait for our appointment. It would love to know how many vehicles have been affected so far.
      I have read from some people that the blistering eventually came back after the repaint. Time will tell for ours. My wife and I have agreed that if the issue comes back, we are getting rid of it. Keep in mind that if you do manage to get new panels, a body shop will still have to paint them. Our has been at the body shop for a week now. 2-3 more weeks to go. We’re just happy they gave us a Grand Cherokee loaner for the duration. Fingers crossed for you.

In early June of 2023 the body shop did the estimate. My appointment was today, September 11th. I got there this morning and was told the rear doors are on back order with no ETA. I'm supposed to check with the body shop in November to see 👀 if parts are available. 😢

    • @EverydayATV
      @EverydayATV  Рік тому +1

      Wow that is just crazy. So it sounds like they are replacing the door/door skins and just not repainting. Sounds like it may be the better of the two options, even if you have to wait longer. The backorder does not surprise me with the number of JL’s affected. I just can’t believe that Stellantis still doesn’t address the root cause. Oh how I would love to have the news media blow the lid off this issue.
      Look at the bright side….I know it’s frustrating but with the fact that they finally acknowledged your claim and with the parts being out of stock, by the time they fix it you will be well past the 5 year paint/warranty period and hopefully this will extend the amount of ownership time without any future issues. Just make sure you get it in writing that with having to wait for the parts, that they will still cover the cost of the repairs with it being past the 5 year mark.

A little over a year ago the dealership actually purchased a local body shop and made it theirs. Amazing how many Wranglers I see there. Glad yours went smooth, though! Black PX8 is probably the easiest paint to match but as you know not all shops are equal. The shop that did the bolt did a 1:1 match and with the bolt being so small, if it was off, it would've really stood out so that shop is doing the top part of my tailgate this spring (its rubbing against seal wearing down to the primer) and I'm hoping that they'll do the hinge. My 2019 Jeep Wrangler JL had corrosion on the door the hood the back door all the hinges I've been dealing with this since July of 2023 and my Jeep just got into the shop and be careful guys because they will try to fix the corrosion instead of putting new parts on your Jeeps and I found out that they were going to try and fix my hood and realized they couldn't because the corrosion was so bad that they actually had to order a hood and now the hood is on order but it may take another month or longer for me to get my Jeep back they did Supply me with a rental car but I'm fed up I'm sick of this I just want my Jeep back this has been a total mess and I cannot believe that jeep doesn't even send out an apology letter or nothing

      It’s disgusting how Jeep/Stellantis just pretends like this isn’t an issue.
      With how tight knit and strong the Jeep community is, it’s too bad that everyone can’t get together and say we will boycott all Jeep products until they get their act together and do something about this. The sad part is so many new Jeep owners have no clue about this issue and continue to become first time buyers.

    I took my Jeep in (same year as yours) because it’s blistering everywhere - hinges, hood, bottom of doors. My warranty was out by a few months and they wouldn’t cover it. So I guess I’m out of luck as far as they’re concerned. I feel like it’s unfair as it’s a known issue. Should be a recall issue.

    • @EverydayATV
      @EverydayATV  11 місяців тому +2

      Wow, that is absolute bullshit on their part if you ask me. Try contacting corporate and see what they say. Maybe they will honor it versus the dealership since you’re only a few months out. Also, take a look at the “Jeep JL Corrosion” group on Facebook. I just read a story there last night of some guy that had doors, hinges and hood repainted on his JL only they have the issue come back again. Over the summer, they gave him brand new doors and hood and painted those and a few months later, those are blistering now too. This issue is just unbelievable. While ours hasn’t come back yet I’m really going to take a look into any class action lawsuits that may have started. Another UA-camr just did a review on his new 2024 Rubicon and he says he still doesn’t know if the issue has been resolved with the new models. He got rid of his 2018 that also had corrosion issues. Unbelievable. Fingers crossed for you 🤞

      @@EverydayATV thanks for the info! I’ll def look into it and try contacting Chrysler. Knowing their track record though I won’t get my hopes up lol
      Yea I have seen other Jeep owners say the same thing - they get the problem fixed, only to have it happen again and again. One guy said he had it fixed twice, happened a third time but at that point the warranty had expired. So it seems like for a lot of us there’s no permanent solution aside from trading it in.
      I saw someone else say that the bubbling paint won’t break/crack open because it’s sealed beneath the paint? I don’t know but the blistering on my hinges is already starting the crack the paint apart in a few spots. I hope it all doesn’t start to crack open because that will be such a bummer!

      @@shannonbloebaum4164 yeah I agree totally. I have a love hate relationship with Jeep lol. I’ve owned Jeeps for over 10 years. Love so much about them from the look to the great capabilities in bad weather. But the manufacturing issues are ridiculous.
      My last Jeep had a manufacturing issue where they left casting sand in the mold of the heater core which is responsible for the car’s heater. I lost heat on the passenger side and had to have my mechanic blow the casting sand out of the lines just to have it refill with sand again causing me to lose heat. I live in Massachusetts where the winters are super cold - having no heat in your car is awful lol.
      He said the only way to fix the issue would be to completely replace the whole unit which would have cost 4-5k. Looked online to see this was yet again, another known issue that Chrysler wouldn’t admit to and recall leaving thousands of owners screwed. I traded that Jeep in for the one I have now just to have another manufacturing issue, at least this time it’s just the body and not anything with the engine. But it’s still very frustrating. The paint issue has been going on so long I can’t believe they haven’t fixed it yet or recalled it. It’s shady business.

      @@FarmhouseFelts unfortunately the blistering on one of the hinges had cracked open and chipped off, leaving the corroded surface exposed 🙁. The door and hood edges never ended up cracking but they may have had we left them long enough. I just don’t understand how they can’t get this right after all these years. The paint on my all-aluminum F-150 is still perfect after 9 years of Midwest winters.

      Hey Steve, mine came back very near the original spot. It’s like it’s creeping under the paint, oxidizing and lifting the paint. They replaced the hinges and they haven’t corroded again. They should have replaced the doors like I heard they have done for others. It seems like some panels aren’t being prepared correctly at the factory or are contaminated metal or something and the only solution is for the parts to be replaced with properly prepped metal. It makes me sick to the stomach when I see the continuing corrosion. They aren’t going to repair it properly as FCA says I’m out of warranty now in Canada. 😣

      From everything I’ve heard from the dealer, this issue should be covered for 5 years. If you have a 2019 or newer you should have no issue. If it’s a 2018, you might still be under the 5 year mark. Best bet is to get to your dealer asap so that they can take pictures, document it and send it to corporate for approval. Once it’s approved, your appointment to bring it in may be a few months out. Our appt isn’t until the end of January and they are giving us a loaner for the duration, which can be anywhere from one to several weeks. Let’s us know if they end up covering it under warranty.
