I've been looking for this song for years. My dad had Micha Maisky's recording on CD and I would listen to it all the time. After I moved out I forgot what it was called and would every now and then try to remember it to no avail. I'm so glad I finally came across it!
This is my utmost favorite piece. I listen to it whenever I study or do anything. I can play it on the cello but not well. I really want to play like YoYoMa in this recording. Thank u for this.
I read so often to words of people who hold this work in incredibly high regard. For me, the opening is beautiful, that elegant theme, but it gets trivial at the 1:30 mark (in this video), after which it is just a series of sequencing phrasing and cliched cadences. I love Schubert's music so much, the piano sonatas, the string quartets, the quintets, the lieder, but I just find this piece so shallow compared to the rest of his output.
Superb performance. Ma is in his greatest period here. The piano part is so vestigial in this piece though that it really cannot stand alongside Schubert's great masterpieces.
Came here because of The Soloist. So glad I discovered this piece and to have it performed by Yo-Yo Ma is even more perfect (who is, of course, referenced in the book as a contemorary at Juiliiard with Nathaniel Ayers)
Cgilbert my comment on #175 Yo-Yo ma his skills on the Cello is very strong and soothes to my soul and body and mind I love him and looks very comfortable.A may peace be unto him . love peace and blessings to Mr man

Actually, the old-time country singer Roy Clark said it best: "It's your talent that carries you through." RC was playing a concert in Japan, and was socked-in by fog at the airport. He barely made it to the Tokyo concert hall, at breakneck speed, about 5 minutes before curtain-time. He was *RUSHED ONSTAGE* after barely changing into his costume. He did the entire concert effortlessly, as if he had "hours to spare". I guess that it's the same with all of the "GREATS",including Yo-Yo Ma... *WOW!*

+MinWoong Park First , I recorded the orchestra to the video tape . After that , I recorded performance of Yo-Yo Ma in the same video tape . The sound of the orchestra is what remained that was first recorded.
do not want moaning...I like most of YoYoMa performances but...no one so far played Arpeggione (all 3 movs) like Lynn Harrell - already some yrs ago but - besides of the beauty of sound - and technically perfect - WHAT A PHRASING! try to find it ...I have a recording....is together with Mendelssohn Sonata in go minor ...what a delight!
I agree. i love Yo-Yo so much, I’m going to see him for the first time he has ever come to Australia this November. But I would give all I have to see and heart the beauty of Jacqueline Du Pré. I think Yo-Yo expresses amazingly, serine, powerful playing. But what Jacqueline had was like a fire erupting inside her and she was able to put that into her playing so well. And yet she had to stop performing before she turned 30 years old, tragic...

amem!
Listen to the viola version, too, especially Yura Lee's interpretation.
What a treat to enjoy masters' performance, gorgeous and stunning... Bravo!
The adagio was sublime, it reached a pinnacle of emotion, sorrow, and beauty.
Elegance, refinement, inspiration, fulness, grace ..... a state of Art
Thank you cello644
Arpeggione sonata - most beautiful sonata ever composed. Period

Are you serious ? This is easily in Schubert's top 5. "Vestigial" hahaha
It lets the cello shine more this way
Such fluidity and flow
Great rendition. As a side note, the page turner deserved her bit of recognition.
"Honorable Mention"...?
Wunderschön!!!

I have enjoyed this one, too. ua-cam.com/video/NNcQuY1isEI/v-deo.html
Sublime
Beautiful tune.
The sound of the piano is very clear. I think the sound technicians had to give a little more volume for the cello. Thank You.

Very subtle and sensitive interpretation - Yo-Yo Ma at his best! But on my earphones the piano is too loud ..
What is the sound of orchestra before start(0:29)?
+MinWoong Park First , I recorded the orchestra to the video tape . After that , I recorded performance of Yo-Yo Ma in the same video tape . The sound of the orchestra is what remained that was first recorded.
Aha.. That's interesting..:)
+MinWoong Park Schubert's 8th symphony :) look it up
Right the 1st movement.
Phaha, two Schubert compositions in this video. In silent parts you can hear Schubert symphonie no°8. Maybe some orchestra had probe? Who knows...
+Pavle Mirkovic Did you hear that too?

Sara Grant the speed here takes away something,,sounds a little spastic.
Unfortunately we lost Lynn earlier this year. He was an incredible cellist.

It seems that Firkušný is totally sight reading. What a talented sight reader!
He’s a little unprepared I think.
The genius at work second only to Jacqueline Dupree
+Emily Schwellenbach People haven't heard of Emmanuel Feuermann who hasn't probably been second to nobody in the musical world.
Don Schwellenbach 唉
Yes,,the older “greats” are not mentioned as frequently,, Casals, Dupre, Tortelier, etc.
