- The history making trio of Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and Mark O'Connor perform O'Connor's composition 'Poem for Carlita" at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City. The three virtuoso string players performed this new American Classical music with such depth, passion and detail that the New York City audience erupted in an ovation after Yo-Yo Ma's final - nearly silent harmonic note. Notice the look of admiration on O'Connor's face as he looks at Ma at the conclusion of the piece, impressed by the cellist's interpretive skills of his music. It is evident that this performance went to a new place for the trio and a new level for American Classical string playing.
REVIEW: Chicago Tribune
Based on the two most extended pieces the trio played Monday, "Vistas" and "Poem for Carlita," it seems that O'Connor's composing has broken through to a new, and deeper, level.
"Poem for Carlita" was even more affecting. Though completely tonal, the harmonic profile of the yearning main theme brought to mind Shostakovich's mid-to-late string quartets, in that the beauty was laced with moments of uneasy tension. The work has the potential to become a classic, especially if arranged for a more typical ensemble, such as a string quartet." -by David Royko, Chicago Tribune
Composer's notes on 'Poem for Carlita.'
"In contemporary vocal music, there is a form called a story song. It is an odd form in that it does not contain any departure from the central idea; therefore there is no "return." The story has a beginning and ending but uses subtle variation to push the idea along its way...much the way loving relationships evolve.
The equivalent of the story song in classical music is a Poem, and this is what I have called this piece. An inspiration I used for my musical poem was the ocean and it's repetition of waves as they fall in to the shoreline. I grew up near the ocean and remember how the sounds of the relentless waves used to calm me. While it was the repetitive sound of the sea that moved me as a child, today, I observed that each wave was not the same but in fact slightly different. I was amazed that it seemed that no two waves looked or sounded the same to me. Each day was just something a tiny bit different. It was very natural to make these kinds of life experience connections. Bridges that joined nature, love and art.
The poem begins slowly and inquisitively and builds through in intensity with loud and mightily passionate moments of emotion before the music comes down peacefully and reflectively, until the last statement played by the violin signifies that the sea is calm once again." -Mark O'Connor
Original chamber music composed by Mark O'Connor presents his own musical journey and explores new ways for musicians to communicate to each other and to audiences. O'Connor has always described his highly personalized style of playing and composing in terms of "crossing bridges."
As a child, O'Connor's musical training included many styles (classical, folk and jazz) and this blending of styles and influences is evident throughout his career and in his acclaimed compositions.
O'Connor's chamber music, featuring string instruments, intricately and delightfully paints colorful musical canvasses that reveal his unique, personal artistic journey. It's a journey one critic acclaimed
"one of the most spectacular in American music."

I've loved this beautiful piece of music ever since the album came out, and I still treasure every listening moment.
Played with such care, emotion, and exquisite technique by every musician involved.
It hasn't lost one note of appreciation from me over time, and every listen still reduces me to (joyous) tears.
I have it up there with Aaron Copland's Clarinet Concerto, and Luiza by Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Yo-Yo Ma is one of those rare musicians who absorbs the music he plays so completely that he becomes one with the music. It is phenomenal
And incredibly generous towards his colleagues--that look of joy he gets when he watches them take centre stage...
When I wrote Poem for Carlita for Yo-Yo Ma, I hoped he would play this exactly the way he plays it. The experience was riveting. It was one of my most dramatic and romantic instrumental journeys and he was the one to expose every nuance of passion in the music. He saved his best for this performance...tremendous. I thank you.
Yo-Yo Ma never played it better than this. "Poem for Carlita" by Mark O'Connor
Were you influenced at all by Niel Gow's laments or Judith Weir's Bagpiper's String Trio (particularly pt.3, Lament Over the Sea)? I heard a lot of both in this piece, but maybe that's just because it brings violin and cello together!
I bought the sheet music for Poem for Carlita as the solo arrangement and I enjoyed learning that piece immensely. Thank you so much for writing pieces that waken spirit
Yo yo ma is and forever, will be a true inspiration for my love for music
I first saw this video 10 years ago. I was 14 years old and had been playing violin for 6 months. It influenced me as a young musician. I am now 24 years old and still love violin and classical music deeply
The wonderful composition is expertly performed by three of the greatest instrumentalists in the world today. Well done to Mark, Yo Yo and Edgar three of my all time favourites.
For me this is Mark's best composition next to Appalachia Waltz, performed here by three of the world's finest living musicians on any instrument. The closing section after the peak with all those rushing lines is stunningly beautiful.
This could arguably be one of the finest trios ever assembled and each has since followed their own paths for example Mark doing the family thing with the Mark O' Connor band. I wish though that he would once again present us with another of this type of striking performances.
Truly shattering in it's beauty. Thank you so much for this work.
one of those pieces you wish would never end.
Yo yo ma is freaking genius ❤
A trio was an inspired mix. Each instrument performed its own solo and mixed brilliantly with the other instruments
Best best of the best..Mark's work with Yo Yo Ma and Edgar was priceless!! Wonderful is such a small word for such a masterpiece!!

The incredible amount of emotion and energy behind this composition is astounding
Mark, Edgar and yo-yo is the best trio god have us
@YoYoMa is this really THE YOYO MA?!
@YoYoMa I have loved you and followed your works since Sesame Street. I knew one day I would be able to see you perform, and I saved every penny. I could get for front row seat at the Houston Jones hall, but they did me so wrong, and set me right in front of this huge pillar where I wasn’t able to see any of the stage wasn’t even able to see you walk on or leave. Despite that my soul was still happy just to be under the same roof lol.
Music belongs in a movie (maybe has been)... so much emotion and expression as music progresses ... great journey of audio pleasure.
I adore this. I enjoyed myself. I'm a huge fan of all of you. Thank you for sharing.
i appreciate all of these men so much
yes!
Awesome! Music from contemporary heaven.
Brilliant performance,
great composition...

“Wonderful performance of a stunning piece...” -David Truran
“Wow. So Great. This performance will make you weep.” -Spencer Shannon
It made me smile big time. Thank you! :-)
As I look for the sheet music for this piece, I find it is scored for violin, viola, and cello. The talented Edgar Meyer is playing the largest viola I have ever seen.
Oh my....
lol
Actually, I think it's Yo-Yo who's playing the largest viola!
Wait until you see Edgar playing the massive violin!
Thank you beautiful performance 👏👏👏🇪🇨🌎
Breathtaking ♥♥
Breathtaking ......
Yo Yo getting the love here. And he deserves it. But Mark O’Connor is a multi-instrumentalist, virtuosic, tour de force with perhaps more range across genres than any other string player.
I love this so much
Commenting on my comment 6 years later. Still love this
Two great, great musicians -- YoYo Ma and Mark O'Connor. Both are so versatile. Mark O'Connor plays jazz and Blue Grass, as well as classical music and his own compositions. Such talent1
So beautiful
Wow that's perfect
Sublime.
This song sounds like America, reconnecting to its global roots. Extraordinary. It moves me.
Technically fucking brilliant. I'm on my fourth listen in a row. I can't believe I haven't heard this version before.

굉장히 멋진 곡이네요... 젊은 시절의 요요마 같은데, 이제야 이곡을 들어보게됬습니다
°O° exelente ¡¡¡
Bellisimo
tellement bien joué que l'on dirait une improvisation...
Where's the love for Edgar Meyer?!
S2 here!
Its an east meets west folk fusion. Mournful and eloquent.
Mr. O'Connor, do you have folk music arranged with chords, melody and a bass line? I play in a group various songs (Red Haired Boy, The Dark Island, etc.) and are used to orch. music, with everything written out. Suggestions? Working on improvisational skills. Tips for developing this skill? Thanks!
Intense
Like listening to Vivaldi, Mozart live!
🌈❤️❤️❤️🌈
Yo ma-ma played the flute never better than this
ye!
He is writing a poem.
"Hey, where's yo yo ma?"
"She's in the back yard."
🕉👵🙂🙏
The camera seems focus more on the violinist than Yo Yo Ma, use Yo Yo Ma name to promote the violinist?
Mark O'Connor (the violinist) composed this piece "Poem."

The music in Heaven will be better than this.
Ugochukwu Nnadi I'm looking forward to it in heaven
Violinist totall minus....
Big no no.. A lot of cough all along. Big American disgrace. Sorry, why are you like this. It is a rock concert made by liberal Americans. Why Yo yo ma did you do this.
