Thank you both for a very informative video. I am in the final year of my Psychology degree and would like to progress to PWP training. I have recently started volunteering with the Samaritans. Do you think this voluntary type of experience is adequate for me to apply for a PWP training position?

At 16:40ish you suggest *not* mentioning using it as experience for applying to an AP role to become a clinical psychologist during the trainee interview May I ask if this is a common route for aspiring clinical psychologists, and why do they not stay on for the high-intensity roles in the IAPT instead? (Not to sound too blunt- but is it because of the better pay? or is the job wildly different/better?)
Hi, what I think you're talking about is when applying to the trainee pwp position - don't mention that you're end goal is to become a clinical psychologist (if that is your goal) and this is because they want to hire people who will stay within IAPT. So even if you don't plan to stay in iapt just make it sound like that is your plan! As people who stay are a better investment for them if they're going to pay you to train 😊 in terms of talking about trainee pwp experience for an AP or clin psych job - go ahead! I think there are so many skills that you learn from being a trainee pwp which are really valued in both of these roles 😊 I hope that helps. If I haven't clarified enough then just let me know
Hi Natalia Love the video its really helpful. I feel like this is the right career path for me, and i want to apply for the pwp trainee course. I have over 5 years experience working in mental health as support staff. Im just not sure if i will actually get on the course, i hear the competition is high of who they allow on the course? Because i dont have any educational background of psychology ect. (I have a degree in interior design) only first hand experience in mental health.
Hi! I'm not sure what the person specification says about whether you NEED a psychology degree or not. I'd recommend searching on the NHS website for a trainee PWP job and looking at the person specification to check 😊 if you do need it and it's really something you want to do then you could look into doing a BPS approved 'conversion course' masters, either part time or full time. But, with all your experience I'd imagine you'd get on easily! It is competitive but not too bad compared to many other roles as loads of unis recruit trainees (e.g. 30-50 at a time), and each uni normally has at least 2 cohorts per year 😊 so loads and loads of pwps are being recruited all the time!!!

The more i research the more i feel like i will definitely apply this year and see if i get called for an interview. As i mentioned i do have alot of experience working in different mental health settings, on the Acute wards, A&E liason and currently at a Place of Safety. I have met and worked closely with a range of patients over the years. I will surely put this on my application. Fingers cross I get through and if i don't, then i will defo look into a BPS conversion course 😊. Thank you
