A Kawasaki Versys 650 has been brought to my attention after having ridden its larger brother - a Kawasaki Versys 1000 which turned out to provide some surprisingly strong points. I also realized that there are quite a few riders who are interested in a Versys 650 as a fairly affordable option on the market. This turns out to be debatable, especially knowing about an all-new Honda XL750 Transalp that arrived on the markets in 2023. Kawasaki Versys 650 surprises but definitely not in a way that I would appreciate. Enjoy my lessons from this video and make conscious motorcycle purchases!
All views are my own and are based on my personal experiences with this brand new Kawasaki Versys 650 from 2023. Stay tuned and subscribe for next mid-size adventure bikes (from an upper segment compared to this Versys 650) and comparisons on the channel!

You always criticize japanese bikes and do favor for the european bikes ,as Japanese bikes are more affordable and reliable than Europeans, u asked about performance it's not moto gp race track, versys is a touring bike not performance oriented, if want speed consider h2 , h2r

It's not connected with Japanese bikes being Japanese. I've had a Japanese V-Strom 1000 for approx. 10 years and enjoyed it. It wasn't 100% trouble-free yet there weren't any major malfunctions either. But all machines eventually break down.
One of the first points in the video was to get the topic of performance out of the way as if this is what one is looking for, they'd be disappointed and it would simply be not right to expect shots of adrenaline from a Versys 650 in this area. Still, it also needs to be said clearly. Wait for a review of a Japanese Honda Transalp 750 coming next and perhaps it will prove the point. Not a speed demon either by the way. But well, costs the same as a Versys 650.

Wow. Brutal. But basically correct. However, as someone who has put 25000 kilometers on a Versys 650 through every imaginable condition, I would like to offer my observations. My Vrsys is a 2011 that I bought second hand. It doesnt even have ABS. It doesnt even have a gear indicator! Handling. I noticed the vagueness that you mentioned in the corners and lack of control. One of the good features tthat the Versys has is that you can adjust the front fork damping and preload. This changes dramatically how the bike handles twisty mountain roads. Add prelaod to the forks, not a lot, just some, and then increase the damping by a good amount and suddenly the bike goes where you point it. What happened to you in the roundabout also happened to me! I almost lost it with luggage and top case to boot. The problem is that the bike is short and tall with a relatively steep rake angle. As one journalist put it, the Versys is a Ninja 650 on stilts. If you are moving at slow speeds and dont use enough counter steer, the bike is going to plow. Also, because of this, the bike is exremely sensitve to tires. I use the Michelin Road 5's which work really well with this bike. Something else I would mention that I consider to be a positive is the ground clearance. 170 mm with a 17 inch front wheel. You can go off of curbs without any problem. I ride in Northern Spain, around the Picos de Europa. We were coming off of the summit of Piedras Longas and suddenly there was no asfault. Just rocks and dirt. For ten kilomters. No problem for the Versys. I had to stand on the pegs occasionaly but the bike handeled it just fine. Suspension didnt bottom out, didnt lose the front wheel, nothin. Power, top speed. Maybe the motor on your test bike has to run in? You would know more than I. On mine, the bike has two different personalities. From 0 to 6000 rpm the bike acts like any other parallel twin. Boring. However from 6000 to 8500 the engine really starts to show it's teeth. On occasion when passing multiple cars trucks etc. I have looked down at my speedomter and have been shocked to find that I was doing 150 kph. Had no idea. Bike perfectly stable, tucked in behind the little wind screen, no turbulence. Just wanted to give you this perspective. Thank you for your chanel. It's excellent. Honest.

Thanks a lot for sharing it from a long-term owner's perspective. I'm glad that you're happy with your '11 Versys 650. I picked up the point about the lack of ABs - it may be worth upgrading the bike because of this and traction control if yours doesn't have it either. I'm talking from personal experience here. Other than this, it's awesome when you've got a vehicle that does exactly what you want it to do. This is exactly the point I think! Thanks again and all the best!

I bought my 2020 Versys 650 (Touring Edition w. handguards and side cases) 2 years ago brand new for ~ € 8500,- and have done more than 40k kms so far.
It's definetely not the perfect bike or better in any discipline than other bikes on the market but it's doing everything relatively good.
However, I really needed to change some things to be happy with her:
Changing tires on the V650 might be the biggest improvement regarding the feel of the ride. With proper tires (like a Conti Trail Attack 3) you don't have problems to ride this thing precisely in corners for example and you can easily keep up with stronger / better / more expensive bikes on twisty roads. And sure..as soon as the street is straighten up, the lack of power will come into play and you can't keep up with more powerful bikes.
Changing the suspension settings also helps to improve the ride a lot (standard settings were not good).
The standard windscreen was annoying, bought another one and now it's quiet in my cockpit ;)
What also improved the ride massively (below ~ 4500 rpm) was the "installation" of an O2 dummy. It cost me around € 20, took 10 minutes and now i can ride this thing smoothly down to 2k rpm.
Unfortunately this is caused due the strict fuel emission laws (EURO norm) in Europe and interestingly some V650s run smoother than others..
What still annoys me sometimes is the on/off feel of the throttle. You're getting used to it and you learn how to ride her smooth around slow corners ( as you said, open throttle is recommended) but that's the only thing that I'm really not happy with.
You can also ride her on gravel or forestry roads with proper tires, what works fine as long as it's not too rough and rocky. Thank's to the upright position, it feels absolutely ok - my Versys has seen more dirt than most Adventure Bikes :D
My 2020 model does not have TC but with around ~ 60 hp, there's not really a need for it imho.
I'm riding the whole year, ignoring most weather conditions (except if there is snow, ice or too much salt on the streets

Thank you very much for those insights - they're super useful and I'm glad to see your recommendation on the topic of tires. I do hope that this can help this motorcycle a lot in terms of a safe and enjoyable ride.

Hahahaha I just swopped my ktm 1190 adv.2016 for the versys 650 2023 and I like the Versys better, especially on small roads and long trips, love the Versys

Well why unsual, oké the abs is rough just like in 2007, forget to refine, gabs are to big, traction control probabely the same, need better tyres than the standards, the suspension are good enough on the roads and for highway buy the givi windscreen but for warm weather leave the standard on.
On long trips the versys is very comfortabel, good upride position for hours driving, on small roads fast enough, so for me driving on small roads the versys is better because I can make easier more hours on the bike then on the ktm 1190, ktm is ofcourse better on wider roads or in the hills just because of more power but not better in steering, no the versys with good tyres give enough pleasure and just more work with your left hand and foot without hitting 150 m/h in a second which is not suitable on public roads.

I’ve done 50,000 km and I’ve ridden it hard, really hard and cornered it like a street fighter. You need to get the suspension adjustment right, put Road 5 or 6 on it and this thing behaves very differently.

I’m a future dental practitioner, I wouldn’t want the extra vibration aside from the rpm of my highspeed handpiece dental instrument (the one we use when drilling your tooth). Anyway I did not feel the vibration when I test rode the r1250gs for three days. Though I was adjusting from it’s hefty weight.

You just got a couple things wrong, the dash flashing is adjustable to whatever RPM you want to, traction control 2 is for rain, 1 is for dry, I have the same tyres and admit they are not great but I never had a slide like you, if you are taller get the touring windshield which is bigger (I dont feel the need, but I'm on the short side), the tools you need to ajust the suspension are bellow your seat and come standard, I have no clue what you are on about the suspension, but it's clearly badly ajusted, cause I can corner fine at high and low speeds

  • @carrlee22

Meh, a lot of comparison with bikes that cost much more than the Versys. I've previously owned the latest model SV650 and the DR650. Have never had the budget for the European exotics, plus I'm wary of their potential unreliability and high costs of maintenance.
I love my 2015 Versys, which was the first year of the current configuration. It is simple, solid, and lacks the needless complication of traction control, TFT display and other electronic wizardry. I've found that (properly adjusted) the suspension works great, even 2-up. I've never had the front end slip on tarmac, even with the factory tires. Nor have I experienced the lack of directional control you mention. Mine corners like its on rails. I also find the power just fine for a 650, especially once you get above 6000 RPM. At 5' 11" (180.34 cm.), I run with the windshield in the highest position and have no buffeting. I find the intake sound pleasant during hard acceleration.
I've looked at DL650s but saw no reason to switch.. Mine has the factory side cases and hand guards. I've toured with it, even 2-up and loaded. The only riding-related complaints I have are the jerky fueling at low speed and the slightly cramped foot position,. I've installed highway pegs on the bottom rails of my crash bars to mitigate the foot issue. The fueling I just live with. The air cleaner under the gas tank is the one maintenance annoyance.
Dollar for dollar, I see nothing better out there.

    • @VToldsMotoShow
      @VToldsMotoShow  11 місяців тому

Good idea about the foot pegs - some do that to older V-Stroms too and it seems to work nicely on long highway runs especially. Thanks for sharing all this and if a given bike suits you, then it means that it's just good enough for what you want from it. And that's totally fine. DL650 would be a very different animal in my opinion. More comfort-oriented.

I owned a 2018 versys 650 as my first big bike. It did everything I needed it to in comfort, but I agree with mostly what your saying. It’s very vibee bike, the engine isn’t the best relating to power delivery, the suspension is meh the throttle on off was terrible and the steering can feel off but I think that was the tyres on it. I can confirm that the stock tyres n them do not get better, I low sided twice on the versys after breaking them in 1500 km due to those tyres, wasn’t pushing it or being stupid literally just lost traction once in the wet on a roundabout and once in dry in the twisted. Shocking Tyres.
Best way I can describe the bike is that it was a great bike 2010, but since it remained relatively unchanged, it’s just not up to scratch anymore against the newer offerings.

    • @VToldsMotoShow
      @VToldsMotoShow  11 місяців тому +2

Thanks a lot for addressing some of those concerns. It's a pity but at least we know and should not hope that the tires will get better with time. Those determined to buy it need to count the cost of different tires right away then. I myself have ridden for many, many years and different motorcycles but these tires are something that should be banned.

Takes guts to post video like this since it will bring out some anger in the fans for sure. After watching I'm still thinking of buying this bike, since to me it just seems to offer the most for its price in its class. Do you have any suggestions for an alternative? I think tracer 7 will be to small for me (I'm 1.95m), transAlp or BMW are 1.5x the price, vstrom 650 seems like solid contender, but Tiger 660 is the one I am mostly thinking about besides the versys.

I had a Versys 650 first version with different front light and apart from the front end there's not much difference. I agree with this review on some parts but not all.
Footpegs feels high, yes agree I'm 186 so lowered the footpegs with a cheap mod. Anyone 180 under would be fine. Original dunlop tyres were crap and can see Kawasaki has not learned the lesson. I changed to Michelin and what a difference.
Agree with being a bit snatchy in 1st or second gear, I changed rear sprocket and that made it smoother.
For the handling ok I wont have the experience here of the reviewer but im ny experience the rubbish stock tyres were the reason. Once changed bike improved a lot.
So ok its bot perfect but a see it lime a little puppy, still has to grow up but still makes you smile. And I think this is/was the point of the Versys. At least when it came out originally.
When it came out the Versys pretty much had no competition. The only othe half similar bike was the BMW gs650.
I dont think its fare in this review comparing it to a Tiger 900 os Suzuki 800. They are different price points and category.
However where Im disappointed by Kawasaki is how little they've improved the Versys over time. They have been lazy with its success and now its been left behind the competition for sure. A shame end for what was a great bike.
However I think there's still a market for it at the right price. Its not a middle weight adventure bike. But it a great bike for learners as a first big bike.
Its a shame hearing these bad reviews of the Versys which was a great bike. But been left behind a bit

Thanks a lot for the tips on the foot pegs modification. As for the competition, there has been Suzuki V-Strom 650 that for most of the time was extremely popular due to its capabilities and affordability. Yeah, I wouldn't compare the Versys 650 to more powerful bikes in total - it was only to indicate how I'd perceive what sort of performance on these examples.
I'd love to see Kawasaki improving both Versys 1000 and 650 as with some tweaks here and there they could easily compete with the rest I think. Today with the new Transalp 800 for basically the same price, it may be even tougher for Versys 650 to compete.

The Versys 650 has a loyal following. As you carefully suggest the owners won't take honest criticism of their pride and joy without getting upset. Truth of the matter is the 650 ADVs are built to a price point and the cost taken out of the suspension components and other hardware affect the overall experience along with the modest power . Most of those owners have never owned or ridden a liter ADV bike and don't realize what they are missing but also a matter of what they can afford. The difference is analogous to the comparison between a high paid escort and street lizard. They may get you to the same end point but the experience getting there is quite different.😂

I've got a 2016 versys 650 in Vietnam, I am moving now to Thailand and will need to buy another bike which isn't that easy. I am 6'4 (193cm) tall and usually do go for longer rides 80% road 20% gravel/side roads and so need something comfortable that is capable of both. Most of the bikes in Asia are way more expensive than in Canada/US but cost in my case isn't a major issue. Most important is the reliability and serviceability, only a limited number of bikes here have a decent support here while others might have you waiting for parts months if something goes wrong. While it's not a perfect bike, overall it's good for the road and sideroads with gravel. While the tiger might be way better, the reliability is very questionable and so would be a big risk at my location. Still looking to see if I can find something better but so far no luck.

I rode a 2022 Versys for a little over a year. You talk about vibrations - I never experienced. You talk about hp, what other 650 has that hp? (Might be some but I think you are comparing to bigger bikes) which would not be comparable. Yes the screen on that bike is fully, mine was different. As for the tire comments ANY tire should have 1000 km on them before ripping in turns. I live in a 3rd world country with terribly bumpy roads, so not sure why you cry about bumps as I had zero issues. I could also dive into corners, without issues. Twitchy throttle gives great response, some riders just cannot handle it. Basic riding knowledge... overall I found your video an opinionated video. You, you, you... not good information for everyone. Also, very hot on the feet in warm weather (how long did you drive it for?)... I come from the cruiser world, but found my year+ on the Versys very enjoyable. Great handling, high speed leans without issue, great on bumpy roads, gravel roads etc,. For a mid range multipurpose bike it is great. If you want performance of a larger bike, get a larger bike.., duh...

You hit a target audience that derves an honest comparo now. Even if this isn't your forte, a tiger 660 review is a must! That three cyclinder symphony overpowers all the positives of the Versys. Also an expert with bigger bikes is well qualified to assess a smaller bike better. Of course you will find a whole list of quality issues but it still is valuable.

@@VToldsMotoShow it's not similar to the Versys at all, the Tiger 660 is a Trident in a more touring body, you'd love it. The issue with it is the random lack of things like the passing button (no flashing of high beams) and minor things
but it's a real weapon, it also has 80hp.

I think there is a lot of skewing of performance when comparing bikes... slow bikes are still fairly fast. A 4 second 0-60 might be slow by bike standards but that is most mid to high-end hatch-back territory that cost 3-5 times as much... it is comparable to most mid-range BMWs and it's quarter mile time is is comparable to many performance vehicles. 12.9 second quarter mile beats an M1 and verging on M3 territory... The original Audi R8 ran a 12.4 second quarter mile... so yeah.

I just realized that the 650 that you've mentioned is at almost 50% of the price of a Versys 650. I understand where the request is coming from then and it would make sense to try it if considering a Versys 650. Till now I was focused more on the 800 MT but still not fully convinced to give it a go.

I bought my 2021 Versys in July 22. I use Shinko E 705 tires and have ridden some serious gravel, some sand, and various non paved places. Not my preference but the bike handles it all very well. It has dropped five times at extreme low speeds and shows some scars. One day I rode it for 750 km with no problems. Last summer in one session I spent 18 hours with the bike. I had to get away from forest fires in BC. I like my bike. It also looks great in its dark grey, red and silver livery. I have added a windshield extension, Givi crash bars, wider foot pegs, heated grips and plugs ins for USB and cigarette lighter. I am just short of 24,000 km on the odometer and ready for its next complete warranty check over before that expires in August. Fastest speed I reached was 180 km/hr. An American rider clocked me at 110 miles per hour last summer on Hwy 93, the Banff/Jasper Parkway. I am 73. If your life is boring, get a motorcycle. It is Never 2 Late.

Interesting review since we had this bike for many years (now riding Ducati ❤). Have you checked the tire pressure? We never had anything like what happened to you. Additionally the chain looks really tight. Maybe this explains the strange behavior? Anyway, Kawasaki has a big problem today because their bikes in the lower middle class are simply outdated, especially when compared to new V-Strom 800 or Transalp.

    • @VToldsMotoShow
      @VToldsMotoShow  Рік тому +1

Thanks for the input. I haven't checked the tire pressure but it's a brand new bike pretty much just checked and registered, so I believe that it should give a fairly good indication for the whole population. The new Transalp 750 feels quite different but it also is more of an enduro-style bike while a Versys could be that fully street-oriented bike with certain benefits of that. But then again, it's sort of segment below the Honda despite being priced the same (this on the other hand doesn't do it many favors in such a comparison). So in the end as a fully street-oriented ones we've got a Yamaha Tracer 9 that reminds me of this Versys a lot in terms of general style. It may be a tough time for this small Versys.

Slippery tyres? Man…wobbling suspensions? Definitely would improve the overall experience if Kawasaki could insert a cornering or leaning abs control device…The bike tends to straight itself immediately on corners if you ad some breaking? It really needs some electronic adjustments to be a safer bike. We need grip on that front tyre. If I fear to lose front grip on a roundabout, that bike for me, would be history very fast.
