Are Vintage Straight Razors Better Than New Ones?

The one thing about vintage razors is that you have to know how to get them shave ready & possibly deal with defects (cracks). As an experienced shave it's not a problem for me, but a newbie? Go the cheap Gold Dollar & see if it works for you, learn to strop & hone, THEN go looking for vintage razors. The exception would be if you buy the vintage from a reputable dealer who has full restored it, but that won't be cheap.
I don't believe the steel in the olden days was special and I believe material science improves with time. I therefore believe I'm going to get a better quality modern blade, just without the character. I'll add the character myself and will be able to pass it onto my son. :D

Thank you Eric, brilliant video, I have 4 vintage straight razors and am currently looking at buying a TI, £257, after watching your video, I think that I'm going to stick with vintage as I love the idea that they are old and with proper honing will give a great shave. Thank you once again. Martin UK (London)

Great video Eric! I started with a Dovo shavette before I bought my first straight razor. It was a brand new Dovo honed by Lynn Abrams. You are right that newbies should start with inexpensive straight razors. I have vintage and new straights and I enjoy each and every one. Have a blessed weekend.

In the words of Aka Stallion/Anthony Esposito: "It's all about the edge". I agree! If the heat treatment is good and it's honeable then it doesn't matter..

I think the modern razors are quite good, but do tend to irritate the skin due to the angle they are held at to cut efficiently. A quality vintage wedge, near wedge or frame back does not require such extreme angles, giving a much smoother and comfortable shave. But it still comes down to honing and edge bevel setting. Practice with a cheap throw away that you won't mind ruining, before working on a vintage or modern.

Carbon steel and damascus steel will rust if you dont oil it and keep it dry. Stainless steel is easier to look after. I like a good hollow grind and well made

Right on @lan-bq7gp ! You are so right, I use a mixture of oil and wax on my straight razors to protect the steel.

What did you catch your finger? I cut a chunk of my thumbnail off about three days ago. 🤕🙄😬😑I just got done honing a razor and I was doing the hanging hair test with one of my Girlfriends loose brush hairs and I got too confident and went real quick and took a little chunk out my left thumb nail!!! 😳I went right to the sink because it started bleeding like crazy👍🏻 🩸 Three days later it’s healing up very well and I don’t even need a Band-Aid 🩹 anymore haha. Lesson learned…. 📚 I’m not gonna get too cocky 🐓 anymore and RESPECT THE BLADE 🙏🏻😌

short answer: No of course not. Nothing older is better. Go get in a $100k car from 1980 and get in a 10k car from today. The modern car is better in every imaginable way. As are most things, almost everything. Obviously, a sharpened slab of metal isn't a complex system like a car, but even still with a simple tool like a razor, seemingly simple, we have vastly improved metallugry, vast improved industrial processes in general, improved heat treatments, improved grinding, just every step of the industrial processes used to make a "simple" item like this, from the raw materials, down to the tolerances in production are better today and for cheaper.

Jeff sorry for the late reply you got trapped in my "Held for Review" section and I just saw your comment.
I completely agree, technology and processes including manufacturing and metallurgy along with quality control are far superior today on a modern straight razor!
