    I went straight razor crazy about 12 years ago. I spent countless hours watching UA-cam videos and money on whetstones. I just never got the hang of honing straight razors, but your videos renewed my interest in trying again.

    I use Duke Canons Best Damn Beard Oil redwood scent as a preserve, and sometimes a aftershave. I agree that angle and pressure is very important. I would not recommend a shaveete for beginners. You tend to hold a more aggressive angle with shavettes. Even hollowgrind straight razors can require a bit more of an aggressive angle. Full wedge and near wedge straight razors require far less angle as the edge is honed at between 5 - 8 degrees. So the slightest tilt will produce a smooth clean shave. Granted they don't Sing like a hollow grind, but I realize far less irritation. Applied pressure should be extremely light, about the same amount as when honing the edge. I do like the looks of that Thiers Issard Bison. But I've got my heart set on a 6/8 Dovo Bismark and a Boker King Cutter 6/8 for my set. I tried to get one of those YZ Extra Sharp stainless but thanks to Covid 😡 I can't get 1

      Right on Richard! ;) Yeah, Buddy both the 6/8 Dovo Bismark and 6/8 Boker King Cutter are fine straight razors! I haven't seen a YZ for sale in a quite while either, but I have been able to get some Gold Dollars.

    i''d suggest that DE shavettes are more bloodthirsty than straight razors and not the thing for a novice to use. Keeping the blade - any blade - at as shallow an angle as possible is the best advice because when you start open blade shaving you are uncertain of your strokes until you have built up that muscle memory. You tend to apply the blade to the skin with too much force as well as pressing too hard. i went from cartridges to a DE, to straights and then shavettes, and it really shocked me how hard i was grinding a cartridge into my face to get it to cut.
    When you make a shaving stroke, do not hesitate, start and stop or move the blade sideways and always lock your wrist. Your elbow ought to dictate the movement not your wrist flapping a blade about like a feather duster!
    My midweek pre-shave is put water on face and leave it there while i make a lather. The weekend one can be more elaborate as i have more time and with a Sunday shave i can lose an hour - hot towels, scuttle, favorite soap etc. One hour a week seems reasonable for flogging myself to death the rest of the time! My opinion is that caring for the skin after the shave with balms and tonics is more important than pre-shave so that's what i do.
    That's horrible weather up there - i have friends in New York and New Jersey that are unimpressed with it!
    Stay warm!
    T

    • @AdventuresInWetShaving
      @AdventuresInWetShaving  2 роки тому +3

      Great advice T! ;) Yeah, Buddy using a shallow angle with the proper form and using just a little pressure will make for a great straight razor shave! I believe we get our misguided need for pressure from using cartridge razors.
      Your weekend shave sounds so much better then your midweek shave! Every shave I will use post shave product to take care of my skin, but only once is a while will I use a pre-shave product.
      Turned out it was really too cold for a snow storm like they predicted... I'm so glad! Stay warm for sure.

      DE blades are synthetic edges that tend to be more toothy sharp blades than custom honed edges on a straight razor, more over the community typically recommend 30 degrees shaving angle that is way too much, below 20 is a lot better. regards dapper shaves

    • @trunkerdixon
      @trunkerdixon Рік тому

      Better late than never i suppose, replying to something i wrote almost a year ago, but you will see that my second sentence recommends using as shallow an angle as possible for any blade.
      As for DE blades which are machine made, i use those on my head but if one really wants to tame them i've always stropped them on the palm of my hand before use.
      What 'community' recommends a 30° shave angle? Maybe with a shavette you can get away with that, but not otherwise.
      regards

    I just re-watched this video the other day and it inspired me to pick up the straight razor again and give it another go. I had put it away for a long time due to too many uncomfortable shaves. But today I had a really good shave... I pretty much kept the spine against my skin with very minimal pressure and it felt heaps better. With a 3 pass shave felt very smooth with hardly any irritation. Thanks Eric for all your videos and how to's!

    This is what I also thought, if you sharpen the straight razor you also have this angle where the spine meets the surface!
    Why would you increase this angle, then you go through your skin with every bump.

    • @AdventuresInWetShaving
      @AdventuresInWetShaving  Рік тому +2

      Great question pf V! If you try shaving with your straight razor completely flat where the edge and the spine are both touching your skin the blade will try to stick to your skin. So we need to raise the spine a spine width or less to get a comfortable shaving angle.
